This is an excellent example of how a paradigm shift can take place and revolutionize an industry. The Toyota Production System or "Lean Manufacturing" has changed the auto industry in a major paradigm shift. Actually, this "revolutionary approach" was

Ford’s Rouge Complex was the forerunner of integration when it turned raw material into vehicles on the same site in a matter of days.

Deming taught us that quality was built into the system and not inspected in, and that leadership and support of the people were the keys to success.

Sloan’s concept was to first get the consumer into an entry level vehicle, and then move the customer up into higher scale products within the product line.

The "supermarket" concept moves material based on consumption (replenishing only what is used), which is the beginning of the "pull" system.
