View Full Version : U-Chart? Product is a temperature sensor

I would like to ease into SPC at my company and may have found a good candidate for this purpose. The product is a temperature sensor that is made in batches of 100 and 200 depending on customer needs. Various critical characteristics (i.e. lengths, diameters, insulation resistance, continuity, etc) are sample inspected at final inspection. I would like to see if the current process is in control. I have prepared a u-chart spreadsheet for the inspectors to enter results as the parts are inspected. Is the u-chart a good place to start or are there better SPC tools for this type of inspection?

The u-chart can provide a good overview of how many measurements fail. But control of any individual measurement is much better done by plotting the measurement itself. I'd be happy to look at the data if you could post it here or send it to my home email prevette@owt.com.

Steve,

Thanks for the reply. I don't really have any data yet as all of the inspections thus far are just pass/fail. I can however send documentation is you wish. My initial intent is to capture the amount of nonconformities per unit and then get behind those numbers. I could then follow up with additional SPC tools for specific criteria. This product is a candidate for our self-inspection program but I must first decide if it is a robust process. In addition, the introduction of the u-chart would expose manufacturing associates to SPC methodology.

By the way my company will be supplying safety-related temperature sensors through Bechtel for the Hanford project. Are you involved with this?

Happy Thanksgiving

I assume those sensors are for the vitrification plant that Bechtel National is building. I don't have any direct ties to that project, I do work at Fluor Hanford which operates much of the remainder of the site. But I do have a work order to Bechtel Hanford (another subisdiary of Bechtel) where they are buying a few hours a month of SPC support. I also do outside work for a subcontractor to CH2MHILL here at Hanford. So if I do end up impacting something for Bechtel National I will have a finger somewhere in each of the major projects here! :tg:
