View Full Version : Did Ken throw away his game?
Govind 30th November 2004, 11:27 PM Iam very surprised watching Ken’s game today. Usually he builds up a lead of $5000 before double jeopardy and at least $10000 lead before final jeopardy . Final jeopardy use to be ceremonial to increase his earnings. He lost many questions today, maintained thin lead and lost final jeopardy. This is very unlike Ken. He is extremely smart and knows answers from every possible subject. May be he is too tired playing too long (74th game), did he decide to give some one else the opportunity and throw off the game?

Randy 1st December 2004, 12:54 AM Hard to say, he may have burnt out. I can tell you from my experience that doing just one show will wear you down because of the tension and pace. I think I read that he wanted to try for 100 wins.
gpainter 1st December 2004, 08:09 AM Never know, maybe he went over-budget.
little__cee 1st December 2004, 10:21 AM I tried out for the show - didn't make the cut - but just the try-out was exhausting. More so than I would have imagined. So I can only imagine what this guy had to go through with all of those tapings.
Randy 1st December 2004, 10:58 AM How'd you like the test?
I had to go up against 2 people that had PhD's in everything.... In the end I got a Jeopardy game and to meet Alex.
The final Jeopardy question is "What Verdi opera opened in Cairo, Egypt?" How the devil would I know, I'm a helicopter mechanic that was a former Arkansas cop and a Marine Grunt?
Answer: Ieda (I had it on the tip of my tongue...yeah right!)

Randy,
I know the Jeopardy rules do not require correct spelling but the answer is What is Aida? You must not do many crossword puzzles either since it appears in them quite often.
As far as your lack of knowledge, can we attribute it to the failures of the education system in not recognizing that our future mechanics, cops and Marine Grunts will need to know operas to earn $2.5 million on Jeopardy? :biglaugh:
By the way, I think the producers went back through the various shows and tried to find topics that Ken may not know. I just wonder how big of a Seinfeld fan a Mormon from Utah is. Also the double Jeopardy questions were not very easy which is how he normally got way in front. That said, it is surprising that he got the final question wrong since he has shown a real aptitude for using logic to come up with the correct response.

Randy 1st December 2004, 01:06 PM Ieda, Aida...poe-tay-toe, poe-tah-to. OK, who cares as long as the fat lady sang in the end?
I still lost!
RCBeyette 1st December 2004, 01:46 PM I don't know if he threw it away, but I do know this....if I'm ever on "Who Wants to be a Millionaire", I want Ken Jennings to be my phone-a-friend lifeline! :D

What is the four letter word for Bacchanalian war cry?
There must be other crossword players out there.

Sorry....couldn't resist!
Yeah ? The woman (Nancy Zerg) who beat 74 game champion Ken did not survive her 2nd game today.. What do you say?
Couldn't resist as well..
Govind.
Laura M 1st December 2004, 11:49 PM What do I say....ummm...someday we may win a trivial pursuit question for knowing either one of their names!
Bill Pflanz 2nd December 2004, 11:45 AM o-r-g-y!
Cari,
Nice try for the response to my question but it is not correct. I should have clarified that the four letter word is suitable for the family hour. Want to try again?
What is the four letter word for Bacchanalian war cry?
Hint: it begins with the letter e.
Bill
Cari Spears 2nd December 2004, 12:01 PM Darn - I'll never get on Jeopardy! :lmao:
Mike S. 2nd December 2004, 12:08 PM Darn - I'll never get on Jeopardy! :lmao:
No, but with answers like that maybe Howard Stern would want you to come on his program! j/k :truce:

EVOE
Not totally sure, but this is the only thing I can think of
Cari Spears 2nd December 2004, 12:13 PM LOL - what can I say, I hear the word Bacchanalian, I think orgy. Howard Stern scares me! :lmao:
little__cee 2nd December 2004, 12:31 PM At my liberal arts college I had to take a class called Introduction to Visual Arts. You'd be shocked at how many Jeopardy answers I can guess from that class.

:applause: We have a winner. I have not been sure how to use it in daily conversation so it has to rate as useless trivia.
Maybe Cari can pretend to be related to the other Spears and get on Howard Stern. She at least deserves an honorable mention for thinking outside the box.
When I was in Milan Italy and not knowing Italian, I was tired of watching BBC news and found a German version of Jeopardy. I actually remembered enough of my high school German to play along. I am not sure it was anymore difficult than some of the questions that I would not have been able to answer if competing with Mr. Jennings.

Jeopardy! champion Ken Jennings' $2.5 million winning streak
came to an ironic end this week when he failed to answer his
final question, but a quick marketing opportunity surfaced for
tax preparation firm H&R Block.
howste 3rd December 2004, 01:12 AM I personally think he threw the match.I just wonder how big of a Seinfeld fan a Mormon from Utah is...Well, I for one like Seinfeld. :D
Bill Pflanz 3rd December 2004, 09:30 AM I personally think he threw the match.Well, I for one like Seinfeld. :D
I am from the Midwest and also like Seinfeld. When I made the comment I was also thinking about something else I just saw. A high percentage of the television shows are set in New York or California. Can't remember the exact percentage but I think it was over 75%.
Since most of the writers are from those locations, they have a tendency to write about things they are familiar with. Sometimes I have no interest in certain television shows since I cannot relate to them at all. Seinfeld's humor may have been universal enough that he appealed to lots of people.
It also brings up the issue of whether television gives a distorted view of life in America since they only show stories from those locations. Columbus Ohio isn't the most exciting place to live but the show Family Ties was supposed to be about a family from here or near here and it did okay for years.

little__cee 7th December 2004, 11:01 AM :topic: Three of the shows that my husband enjoys watching, curiously enough, are set in Chicago or else deal heavily WITH Chicago: According to Jim, E.R. (which I enjoy), and Still Standing all have Chicago themes.
Maybe the trend is shifting???
Back on topic, has anyone read the plans that H&R Block plans to reveal an ad campaign to the effect that "You can be a genius and still not know where to get your taxes done?" As the Guinness guys say in their commercials, "Brilliant!"
