View Full Version : Quick Test - Are You 98% or 2%? You just thought about....

Al Rosen
25th January 2005, 02:55 PM
At the end of this message, you are asked a question. Answer it immediately, don’t stop and think about it. Just say the first thing that pops into your mind.

This is a fun “test”… and kind of spooky at the same time! Give it a try.

Now just follow the instructions as quickly as possible. Do not go to the next calculation before you have finished the previous one. You do not ever need to write or remember the answers, just do it using your mind.

You’ll be surprised.

How much is:

15 + 6

3 + 56

89 + 2

12 + 53

75 + 26

25 + 52

63 + 32

I know! Calculations are hard work, but it’s nearly over.

Come on, one more…

123 + 5

Now quickly think about a color and a tool!

A bit more…

You just thought about a red hammer, didn’t you?

If this is not your answer, you are among 2% of people who have a different, if not abnormal, mind.

98% of the folks would answer a red hammer while doing this exercise.

Participate in the poll and we’ll see.

I thought "red screwdriver" - but I think I was swayed because (and I'm serious) I just came in from the floor about 10 minutes ago and used the small screwdriver I keep in my desk drawer for picking chips and bearing balls from the bottom of my boots.

BUT I had just received an email from my friend who works for Channellock - I know they primarily make pliers with blue handles but this may have swayed my thoughts.

Gosh, with such scientifical prove that I'm not normal, should I ask my boss a pay rise? :lol:Hmmm.... Good question. Since we quality geeks normally seem to be abnormal (compared to what?), perhaps you'd better ask him to perform this test first. If he ends up in the 2% bracket too, you may have a chance.

Me too.

Why would doing calculations in your head make 98% think of a red hammer?

It has nothing to do with the calculations. If you ask folks to pick a color, they will typically pick red or blue. If you ask folks to pick a tool, they thend to pick a hammer. Put both of them together, and they will usually pick a red hammer.

Purple Screwdriver.
1) Purple is my favorite color. I always say "purple" if someone says "color" on one of those free association things. But then again, I've been trained NOT to give standard answers. Screwdriver, flat blade, a.k.a, pry bar, chisel, rectangular hole punch (when combined with red hammer), scoring tool, scraper, hinge pin removal device (also in combination w/ red hammer), paint can opener, universal car repair tool (reverse grip, whack offending car part with what common folk refer to as the "handle"), etc.

2) Vodka and Grape Juice.

I remember a "beverage" from the 60's - a Black Velvet (Blackberry Brandy and Vodka in the same ratio as Vermouth and Gin in a 1:4 martini) - went down like soda pop!

Is the ---primary--- reason for this poll?

---------------------------------------
21 = 3 Prime x 7 Prime

59 = Prime

81 = 9x9 = (3x3)x(3x3) are Primes

101 = Prime

77 = 7x11 are Primes

95 = 5x19 are Primes

127 = 9x13 = (3x3) x 13 are Primes
---------------------------------------------

Entries = 7 Prime
Prime Entries = 2 Prime
Derivitives of Prime = 5 Prime
---------------------------------------------

21 --- 2 Prime + 1 Prime = 3 Prime
59 --- 5 Prime + 9 = 14 = 2 Prime x 7 Prime
59 --- 5 Prime + (3 Prime x 3 Prime)
59 --- 5 Prime x 9 = 45 --- 45 = 3 Prime x 3 Prime x 5 Prime
65 --- 6 + 5 Prime = 11 Prime
65 --- (3 Prime + 3 Prime) + 5 Prime = 11 Prime

I think we get the picture and I think I need to get a real job or some serious therapy (again)!!!!:biglaugh:

This is a fun “test”… and kind of spooky at the same time! Give it a try.

Now just follow the instructions as quickly as possible. Do not go to the next calculation before you have finished the previous one. You do not ever need to write or remember the answers, just do it using your mind.

You’ll be surprised.

I know! Calculations are hard work, but it’s nearly over.

Green electric drill.

I guess it goes to show that either the test is hooey or most quality people are abnormal.:bonk:

OK, so I've seen this little quick test probably a dozen times throughout the years, so I had to cheat :lol: I already knew that the 98% was a red hammer, but for the life of me I couldn't think of anything else...probably because I already knew that that was at the end. But the first couple times I seen this I didn't think of a red hammer, so I've always been apart of the 2%.

Looks like I am part of the majority here, I though of a blue screwdriver. :bonk: Is this good or bad. Aww so what it was fun.

To tell the truth, I am one of the 98%, but the poll result is not as what you said.

There are so many people who are thinking otherwise. Now the question is if so many of them can be 2 %? :cool:

Ha, I've done this before and ansered Orange Hammer, so I'm just about conventional

Funny thing is I was 2/3 the way through this and started to remember it, but still could not stop the orange hammer coming into my mind

I'm amazed at the number of people who have responded to this poll. But - What does this tell us?

2%
I went Blue Hammer. Close but,,,,,
I've been a quality professional since 83' and I've always felt it takes a different kind of individual and approach to succeed in this field.
The results of this test seem to attest to that.

Thanks for the reply.
This has been very interesting. I'd like to know how it works. I can understand Red Mic. being "in the business" my self, but I sent it to a few here at work - The responses; Blue hammer (2) Brown Hammer (2) Purple hammer, Red hammer, Black hammer and Red Trowel.
We do computer chips - not a hammer in sight!

I used to do computer tech support... The hammer may be wishful thinking! :D

The number of responses may be indicative of either: we are in need of all the distraction we can get, or we are "sucked in" by the provocative title.

(Read The Freakin' Manual!)
Since they were cursing up a blue streak, where would they have fit on the spectrum?;)

:lol:Ok, now I understand the spooky part. I thought of a blue wrench and I see sevral others did as well. Al, can you elaborate on the meanings of the results? Thanks for the fun.

It was from an e-mail that I received. Maybe the most common tool people think about is a hammer and the most common color they think about is red. Maybe there is a dilettante shrink lurking in the cove that can shed some light.
