Ford recalls nearly 800,000 pickups, SUVs

Ford Motor Co. is recalling nearly 800,000 pickups and sport utility vehicles because the cruise control switch could short circuit and cause a fire under the hood, the nation's second biggest automaker said Thursday.

The recall affects approximately 792,000 Ford F-150 pickups, Ford Expeditions and Lincoln Navigators from the 2000 model year. Also affected are 2001 F-Series Supercrew trucks that were made at the same time.

Ford will notify owners of the recall in February, and dealers will deactivate the cruise control switch for free. Once the company has an adequate supply of replacement switches, it will send another letter notifying owners that they can get their switches replaced.

Ford said cruise control will be disabled once the switch is deactivated.

Great...never mind the inconvience of having to make two trips to the dealership. Its crap like this that keeps me buying Japanese. It's funny, because my in-laws, or should that be outlaws, are staunchly Pro-Ford. I'm thinking Ford's latest All-Wheel Drive offering is another disaster waiting to happen.

I'm waiting for 2007 when Nissan is supposed to introduce the "Skyline" to the the American Market. I'm just hoping they keep it authentic with the twin turbos, but that's not likely. As for Ford, it isn't the least bit surprising.

I agree. I posted the article but Ford isn't the only car company which has extensive recalls.

Agreed. Not a Ford fan, more Chrysler. But here I go, taking my Durango in for a front-end recall, one that Chrysler tried to get out of. All of the auto companies see recall issues over bad quality problems.

And very often the Japanese companies use "hidden recalls". The dealer fixes the problem when the vehicle comes in for regular service events. That way there is no publicity. and the Japanese companies can and do fight against a public recall as hard as the US ones...at least Ford went public with it relatively quickly.
