View Full Version : Movies and TV shows we like (or not...)
Hershal 30th March 2005, 02:03 AM I didn't see one of this thread so I thought I would start one.
Movies I like:
Any John Wayne movie
Almost any Eastwood movie
Any Bruce Lee movie
Almost every Mel Brooks movie
All the Star Trek movies
All the Star Wars movies
Remember the Titans (best football movie ever made IMO)
Shrek and Shrek 2 (BRILLIANT satire!)
Toy Story
Any Disney animated film I have seen
The Buena Vista films
Various war and western
That's all I can think of for now, but I'm sure I'll remember more.
Movies I don't like:
Any movie that originated as a 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, or 1980s cartoon or TV show
Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon (Plausible impossible is one thing, but C'MON)
Again, all I can think of for now, but I will likely remember more.
TV shows I like:
The list could go a long ways, depending on the decade! :D
Star Trek of course (all 6 series)
Most of the pre-PC Saturday morn cartoons
JAG, Navy NCIS, CSI, Law and Order
I'll stop there for now
TV shows I don't like:
Buffy and Angel
I'll think of others too, I'm sure
Hershal
D.Scott 30th March 2005, 08:25 AM That's quite a list Hershal. I have to agree with a lot of them although I'm not all that big on Wayne, Eastwood and Lee. I do like the Brooks movies and in the same vein the National Lampoon flicks.
I am a big Disney fan and always have been. I certainly liked Shrek but I think one of the best animated shows lately was "Finding Nemo".
I am a very big Mel Gibson fan and I rate "Braveheart" and "The Patriot" with my favorite shows.
At one time I would have said I never saw a movie I didn't like - even "Crouching Tiger" but in recent years more and more movies are adding gratuitous "adult" language that I personally believe is creating some very poor shows.
My taste in TV shows has changed over the years wit it deteriorating to enjoying the animated shows more than most of the garbage they put on. I still enjoy "Monk" and for some reason think it is one of the best shows of all time.
I could list pages of TV I don't like but why bother? I can say it all by saying I prefer to watch a rerun of "Barney" to watching any reality show.
This looks like a fun topic. I hope we can do some reviews of new shows and discussion of what we like and don't like.
Dave
ISOPete 30th March 2005, 11:30 AM I am Catholic and my wife and I homeschool our children. Thus we try to keep trash off our TV. I enjoy the Visual Bible series and their newest release the Gospel of John. the kids like the animated Legends of the Bible series.
Craig H. 30th March 2005, 12:00 PM Did anyone catch "The Office" last night? Awful, IMHO. It sure didn't live up to the reputation of it's British namesake.
I don't watch many movies, but my favorites include "Monty Python and the Holy Grail", "Blazing Saddles", "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?" and "The Blues Brothers" to name a few.
It took 4 or 5 viewings of Holy Grail until I was satisfied that I had heard all of the dialogue. It is hard to laugh and listen at the same time.
WALLACE 30th March 2005, 12:09 PM Yeah,
Some shows just don't translate across the pond.
Hey look out for "Dr Who", I believe it has its North American premier next week some time. I just loved the original as, it was my TV diet of choice while growing up in Scotland.
Wallace.
nomisd 30th March 2005, 12:15 PM Yeah,

Wallace.
Its good but as one review of it I read said - "Dr Who for the attention deficiet generation". Having seen the first episode last saturday evening I have to agree; whereas Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker saved the world over 3 or 4 episodes, Christopher Ecclestone will do it in 1. Oh and the special effects, just too slick! :D
Simon
Mike S. 30th March 2005, 12:17 PM Agree, Craig, "The Office" was awful -- 15 minutes was all I could take.
WALLACE 30th March 2005, 12:18 PM Yeah,
John Pertwee and Tom Baker, those were the days.
Wallace.
Hershal 30th March 2005, 12:53 PM I am a very big Mel Gibson fan and I rate "Braveheart" and "The Patriot" with my favorite shows.

Thanks Dave, I forgot Mel Brooks, who I also like. Add everything he has done to my favorite list.....well, I haven't seen Passion yet, but I will if I ever get to the vid store.....
I agree with putting any reality show on the NOT favorite list.
New shows? Works for me!
Hershal

We Were Soldiers is one heck of a movie. Intensity on the level of Apocolypse Now, but it actually happened.
Hershal, The Office has been a hit in England. Instead of bringing the BBC version here for us to see, as PBS did with the wonderful Dr. Who, Fox decided to treat us to their version, which debuted last night. Lets just say it stank. Badly. Like a dirty skunk in a landfill.

Randy Stewart 30th March 2005, 05:09 PM Craig I fully agree about the Holy Grail. It is still my favorite of all time, followed closely by Space Balls.
Some of the moview I like: Crimson Tide, Hunt for Red October, U571, We were once soldiers, Master and Commander, A vs. P, etc.
Some of the TV shows: Twilight Zone, Outer Limits, Night Galery, Mythbusters, Undersea Detectives, Battlefield Detectives, MXC, Whose Line Is It?, CSI, Monk, etc.
I do like Deadwood and Carnival on HBO.
Enough for now, I still have a bit of a sunburn to take care of!!!!!!:agree1:
SteelWoman 30th March 2005, 05:14 PM Glad to see someone else mentioned "House" on Fox - I think it's just terrific. Intelligent TV, whooda' thunk? For what it's worth, I'm also a fan of:
* Medium
* Monk
* Nearly anything on HGTV
Guilty Pleasure I'm Ashamed to Admit :
* Survivor
* Everwood
Craig H. 30th March 2005, 05:43 PM Because we were talking about "We Were Soldiers" I thought I would mention a lesser known movie that I liked that you might have missed: :"Enemy at the Gate". Its about snipers in Stalingrad during WWII, and is also based on fact. The opening scenes are a little gory, though not on the scale of "Private Ryan".
ralphsulser 30th March 2005, 05:47 PM Yes, I saw that one. Was good, and interesting to see how intense the snipers were on being the best. Of course that also ment staying alive.
Greg B 30th March 2005, 08:43 PM Has anyone seen the movie 'SAHARA' yet? It stars Mathew McConehy (sp?) and Penelope Cruze (sp?)
IEGeek 31st March 2005, 10:13 AM Because we were talking about "We Were Soldiers" I thought I would mention a lesser known movie that I liked that you might have missed: :"Barbarians at the Gate". Its about snipers in Stalingrad during WWII, and is also based on fact. The opening scenes are a little gory, though not on the scale of "Private Ryan".
I think it was actually called Enemy at the Gates. Barbarians at the Gates was a biopic about the RJ Reynolds and American Express during the heydey of corporate mergers and hostile takeovers. Both are excellent movies. The book Enemy at the Gates is excellent. It goes into a lot more historical data regarding the trials and tribulations at Stalingrad.
Just some thoughts....

Jerry :D
Hershal 31st March 2005, 12:52 PM Jerry.....Aqua Teen Hunger Force.......hmmmmmmmm.....what do you think of KND (my favorite from Cartoon Network)? In particular I like the new episodes.....Number 5 might be like Captain Janeway when she grows up!

JerryStem 5th April 2005, 11:51 AM Hershal:
Never really watch Kids Next Door. My wife's a big Cartoon Network fan so we watch alot of Grim Adventures, Ed Edd and Eddy, Fairly Odd Parents, and I can't think of the name of the one with the boy genius scientist and his annoying sister..... (bugs me too.....)
I'm trying Space Ghost and Sea Lab 2021 on Netflix since I can't stay up that late!
Wolfnature:
That's about the ONLY one I would watch! I love Spanky Ham.....
Jerry :)
Hershal 5th April 2005, 05:12 PM Jerry,
I quit watching SeaLab.....I do like Grim though. I know what you mean about staying up late, so I usually miss Adult Swim. I also enjoy Teen Titans.
Hershal
BadgerMan 6th April 2005, 12:56 PM Oh, this looks like a fun thread!
TV shows? Only a few worth watching:
1. Re-runs of Seinfeld
2. $ex in the City
3. Most things on OLN except for rodeo coverage
Movies?
1. Raising Arizona – funniest movie ever made!
2. The Outlaw Josey Wales – best western ever made
3. True Grit – second best western ever made
4. On Any Sunday – best documentary ever made, at least IMHO! LOL!
5. Lord of the Rings Trilogy – wow……what an accomplishment.
Hershal 7th April 2005, 11:18 AM OLN? Not familiar with that one.......
Randy Stewart 7th April 2005, 02:13 PM OLN - Outdoor Living Network.
Shows you all the hunting and fishing places that most of us mortals will never get to. But, those guys on the show don't seem to be allowed to have a beer while they fish. I just don't see how you can separate them!!!! I fish therefore I drink, or I drink therefore I fish.
ralphsulser 7th April 2005, 05:27 PM TV
Re-runs of Law and Order with Lenny Briscoe( He was the best)
CSI
History Channel
Discovery Channel
Movies
Bourne Identity, and the sequel-lots of actions, whew
Blazing Saddles
History of the World part 1 and part 2
Star Wars-the first one
Ron Rompen 7th April 2005, 10:35 PM My tastes are pretty varied:
Shows I Like:
CSI Miami or CSI Vegas
Reruns of M*A*S*H
KINK
Mail Call
Iron Chef
My Dad is a Rock Star (oh YEAH!)
Monster Machines
Family Guy
Shows I Hate:
CSI New York
Young & the Breastless, As the Stomach Turns, and the rest of the daytime soaps
Spongebob Squarepants (although my daughter still loves it, I have hope that she will outgrow it someday)
Dogs with Jobs (don't ask)
Animal Cops (don't ask about that one either)
MTV (gone waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay downhill)
Jennifer Kirley 7th April 2005, 10:44 PM I wish I could catch the John Wayne movie The Three Godfathers, made many years ago. It seems that's the original take on Three Men and a Baby, set in the old west.
I don't know what I'll do when there's no more Star Trek series to watch. Waaahhhh!

I would say "you fish therefore you drink" only because I also drink but do not fish......but now, if you want to drink and talk about measurement uncertainty......(hint: several beers later, MU identification and calculation actually begins to make sense).
I suppose one could consider that an "away mission."

I agree with that.....great movie.....one of the funny ones, or as funny as JW got at least.......
I also thoroughly agree that once Enterprise is off, we are stuck with reruns and DVDs until a new series. Have you been to ST:TE in Vegas?
Ron, do you like the dog and the baby in family guy? My two favorite characters.

What's so sad is that they have a really awesome library that likely will never again see the light of day. I once, in the mid 80's saw a video of a concert with Eric Clapton playing Layla (the long version) with lots of other big rock and roll names on stage with him. Just that one song, in their "jukebox" format. It was > 10 minutes long and was one of those times that the art truly lived up to its potential. I saw it once, and I'm sure it will be the last time.
I want MY MTV.
Cari Spears 11th April 2005, 04:27 PM ...and I can't think of the name of the one with the boy genius scientist and his annoying sister..... (bugs me too.....)
Dexter's Laboratory (love that one!)
I could go on and on - but for now...
I just caught a few minutes of an old "Golden Girls" - I still sit through a lot of the re-runs when I come across one while surfing and here's an example of why:
Blanche is describing one of her suitors very large ears and says "The size of a man's ears is directly proportionate to the size of his other parts - if you know what I mean."
Rose: "No, Blanche, what do you mean?"
Dorothy: "She means he had a big, floppy pancreas, Rose!"
As I've said before - I am easily amused
Hershal 24th April 2005, 01:34 AM My son is beginning to date a girl who claims to have no idea of SATIRE!!!!!!

Wish us luck......

IEGeek 25th April 2005, 09:49 AM I apparently had a kung-fu weekend. I saw Hero. Wow! It was awesome. Truly awesome. I also saw House of Flying Daggers. That too was amazing, the visuals were outstanding, the story was well thought out and the action.... AWESOME. I highly recommend both of these. They would even be appropriate for high school aged kids, they are not seeped in nudity, nor language. And the violence is more like a well choreographed ballet.
We use Netflix religiously, so if you are not a member, I highly suggest this wonderful resource. Let me know if you would like a free trial and I can help.

tarheels4 25th April 2005, 10:04 AM I searched for and found "The Party" with Peter Sellers. This is a very funny movie but I have not been able to find it in local video stores. No one has heard of it. Thanks Mr. Geek.

I second your recommendation of "The Party." It's essentially plotless, and what plot there is is very dated (late sixties) but it's great showcase for Peter Sellers' comedic talents and one of the most neglected and underrated movies of all time. If you can watch this movie without laughing your :ca: off, you need to see an embalmer.
Ron Rompen 25th April 2005, 06:46 PM Ahhhh...the old 'kung fu movie weekends'. Gone through a few of those myself. In fact, the wife has (finally) discovered her addiction to them as well; we have just purchased (at the outstanding price of $3.99 ea) the following titles for my viewing pleasure:
The Silver Spear: No credits on the box, but I watched this one in the 70's, and thought it was schlocky then!
Young Tiger: Has a 3 minute total appearance by Jackie Chan....boy, was he ever YOUNG once.
Fire Dragon: Jackie Chan again...haven't watched it yet, but I'm prepared for the worst.
Kung Fu Zombies: The title says it all....how bad CAN IT BE??????
For other assorted fare, I just watched 'Oceans 11' for the first time, and was satisfied with my investment (ok, so it was on TV.....but I had to invest my TIME, right?)
Seemed to be a complete 'Mission:Impossible' takeoff, but since I always enjoyed that show...............................................
Randy Stewart 26th April 2005, 09:16 AM I got stuck watching the Spongebob movie - 3 times!!! (my punishment for the mother comment in an other thread - I really didn't mean that it was all moms honest) The only way of getting out of the torture was going to see a High School version of Disney on Ice and taking my daughter shopping! I did fine a good deal on a Hybrid #3 golf club though. And I got to watch a couple episodes of MXC on Spike. You know, they actually have "professional" dodgeball on that channel?
sourdingue 26th April 2005, 10:39 AM Hi all, :bigwave:
I have just registered this morning (I live in France) and I spent pretty much all day looking for stuff for work (I'm working in the continous improvement field, just started) and I'm glad i found a nice topic.
One thing for sure is that we can feel the age difference! Not that I don't like the movie quoted but because nobody talked about the TV show "Friends" (someone mentionned "Joey" but compared to friends its tasteless).
I don't know how you don't know it (some of you must have kids the right age). Anyway if you're looking for a good laugh try it !!
Some of you talked about Walt disney and stuff I suggest you try to watch some anime :
- Cowboy bebop
- Samourai champloo
- Trigun (it's kind of dumb but funny)
(if you liked one of this ask me I can show you a lot more).
About the movies there's one I'd like to add (well one reference) Charly Chaplin (you can't say it's not great art).
Take care,
Rohy :bigwave:
Laura M 26th April 2005, 10:54 AM I got stuck watching the Spongebob movie - 3 times!!! (my punishment for the mother comment in an other thread - I really didn't mean that it was all moms honest)

Stop already. We knew you were just "stereotyping", and that us quality goddesses were not included!
Mike S. 26th April 2005, 11:22 AM My TV watching lately...
HGTV -- the wife loves it -- gives her ideas for torturing me with new projects
Everybody Loves Raymond & 2 1/2 Men
Survivor
History Channel
Misc. Classic TV on Nick TV Land
Joan of Arcadia (one of the better TV series, IMO, and you can watch it with your older kids with no fear)
DVD's...
Season 1 of Hogan's Heroes
Shrek 2
Hershal 26th April 2005, 02:05 PM Sourdingue, my son loves Bebop.....I kind of like that the main character plays an idiot while everyone around him (1) does not know he is the they are looking for, and (2) they are all afraid of him.
For anime though, I will likely stick with Robotech (Macross saga)
Hershal
Hershal 26th April 2005, 02:07 PM Oops, forgot the other anime I like.....forget the name.....bounty hunters, computer chip in the dog (he's a wizz at chess), laid back main character.....

Randy Stewart 27th April 2005, 08:30 AM MST3K...any Mysties out there?
I found MST3K about 10 years ago. The Thanksgiving marathon on Comedy Central replaced the Macy Parade and more than a few Lions games.
I think my favorite was the Gameron movie. It started to fall off after Joel Hodges left, but I still watched it on SCIFI.
I have 4 seasons worth on VHS and you can still find episodes on eBay.
Rock climbing Joel, Rock climbing.
tazng00se 27th April 2005, 02:56 PM I happed upon an episode about 10 years ago too. It was a Godzilla flick. I love Gozilla movies and didn't even notice the three shadows at the bottom of the screen until they started talking. I did an actual spit take in my own living room.
All time favorite right now is The Usual Suspects
Other favorite movies include:
Horror - Texas Chainsaw Massacree (old & new versions)
- Motel ****
- Don't Look in the Basement!
- Phantasm
- From Dusk Till Dawn
Any Kevin Smith movie
Really bad "B" monster movies - that's why I really love Mystery Science Theater 3000 (MST3K)
All Disney, Spongebob, South Park and other new animations to include anime.
I guess I'm just warped...it all started when my cousin took me to see the original Friday the 13th (opening night) when I was 15.
Craig H. 27th April 2005, 02:59 PM Really bad "B" monster movies
Ah, yes. The Blob, Godzilla, and whatever happened to Gamera, the flying turtle?

Ah yes, MST3K.... Filled many a boring day when I was living in New Orleans back in mid 1992. Fresh out of the Navy (8/91), lost my job, my apartment and my grandfather in one week. Yes, quite a dark time for me.
I consoled myself in my friend's apartment watching MST3K for a looooong time until I hadn't been able to find a new job and was rapidly depleting my leftover savings from the Navy and Desert Storm. Had to move back home..ugh.
Joel was definitely better but I watched both. I think I even saw the movie they made, don't remember...
Jerry
tazng00se 27th April 2005, 06:05 PM Rock climbing Joel, Rock climbing.
I always thought there were more out there than myself. "Deep hurting". I think the invention exchange was a great opening.
Now, for my dislikes:
ALL REALITY TV SHOWS!!! In reality they're more scripted than talk shows like Jerry Springer and the like.
Randy Stewart 28th April 2005, 04:12 PM The Blob, Godzilla, and whatever happened to Gamera, the flying turtle?
"Gamera is really neat, Gamera is turtle meat, we love you Gamera"
One of my favorite MST3K episodes!

Hershal 14th May 2005, 03:53 AM I heard that at least some of the character voices have been signed for Shrek 3.......anyone care to guess what they will spoof in the next one?
Wes Bucey 14th May 2005, 09:30 AM If you ever enjoyed an episode of Monty Python's Flying Circus, you absolutely must see Hitchhiker's Guide. My wife and I went on a weekday evening - only old codgers like us in the audience - and absolutely roared at some of the setups and sendups. The movie is definitely a lot better than the old TV stuff. I was very impressed with the full-size muppets versus using computer-generated stuff for the alien characters. I think this was a very good presentation for folks who knew Hitchhiker from radio and TV and for "newbies" (my wife.) As good as it was, it still kind of pales compared to the novels - it must have something to do with "the mind's eye" compared to looking at someone else's vision.
sourdingue 16th May 2005, 06:26 AM Hi Hershal,
When you talked about anime I think you mistook between cowboy bebop (which are the bounty hunters with the dog playing chess) and Trigun which is the show about a dumb looking guy who's most of the people are afraid of.
If you liked this one I'm sure you'll like "last exile" and "samourai champloo"
Take care,
Rohy
wmarhel 16th May 2005, 09:23 AM How about:
The Highlander Series
La Femme Nikita
X-Files
Monty Python
Kids in the Hall

Coronation Street (I'm a die-hard!)
Friends repeats ("they're not coming on, man, and the lotion and powder have formed a paste!")
The Office (BBC version - not the new American crap!) - the boss just makes you cringe - he's so awful.
Simpsons (enough said)
Much More Music - FAR better than the standard MuchMusic station. MM caters to the kids; MMM is a little more adult - plays mainstream stuff as well as older stuff - and their "Listed's Top 20" shows are great. Watched "Listed's Top 20 Heavy Metal Bands" last week - was *excellent*. (Def Leppard made #12 - I shed a tear of pride.)
On the big screen...
Office Space
the John Hughes 80s trio (Pretty in Pink, The Breakfast Club, and Sixteen Candles - whatever *did* happen to Molly Ringwald?!)
Life as a House - man, I cried my way through that whole movie...
Bridget Jones 1 and 2 - although the first was better, but man - hilarious.
can't think of a lot of movies now...I'm not as big of a movie buff as most of the people I know.
Shows I will never understand...
Trailer Park Boys - just immature humour, really. Maybe I would have liked it three years ago - but I seem to have grown out of that stuff.
Seinfeld - never found it funny, and still don't.
Will & Grace - such stereotypical crap...I have no words.

You couldn't pay me enough to watch that garbage. If I'm going to watch the news at all, it's normally CBC - or BBC. I tend to avoid the news, though. I have enough issues with anxiety as it is...in all seriousness, there are days when I can't stomach the news.

Bad news? Yeah, or badly reported, such as the newsweek story about flushing a copy of the Koran that they later stated that they could not back up. The networks picked up the original story and reported it as "news" without bothering to independantly check sources. Personally, because of all of the misery they created, this warrants the death penalty for Newsweak, and long jail terms for the reporter(s) and editors involved, along with the jailing of some of the news folks from a couple of networks. Inexcusable.

I hope you are right. Another ultra liberal rag down the tubes.
Rachel 16th May 2005, 11:20 AM I agree with you that mostly everthing reported these days is bad news.
*Bad* isn't the word that I'd use - more like *scary* or *disturbing*. The first time I heard about the Terri Schiavo case, I had nightmares.....partly for personal reasons (brought back some tough memories of my dad toward the end) and partly because of all of the people that made the case their business when it really had nothing to do with them, and when they really had no understanding of what was going on. That kind of thing makes me sad.
And then, this weekend, hearing about the Amber Alert in Toronto...and hearing last week (or the week before?) about those two eight- or nine-year-old girls in the States that were killed...awful. I can't separate myself enough from the news to listen to it without it shaking me...

That's most days for me anymore. To me, "news" and "reporting" implies an accurate accounting of what happened. How much "news" do you encounter these days? Frankly, I can form my own opinions on the subject there after. I don't need some clown with an agenda telling me what I should think about what happened!
The only way to change it or make it go away is to turn it off. When their ratings tell them it's time to change, they will.

Take care,
Rohy
What little I know of anime - aside from Robotech Macross - is from my son, who got me into bebop.....and vash from trigun.
Yes, I bought some bebop.....

Yup - it's a pretty stupid show...sort of along the same lines as MTV's "Jackass" in the States. Although there was a time when I found that sort of thing amusing, I think I'm just growing up...some may even be so bold as to say, "maturing" (though I think that may be a stretch...).
On a related note - watched the series finale of "Everybody Loves Raymond" lastnight. Was never a huge fan of the show - didn't really like it at first (too much yelling!). As I matured (again, arguably) - and now, with a wedding on the way - I am able to relate a little bit more...still not a show that I couldn't miss, but one that I would watch if it was on. Watching the recaps lastnight, I really started to appreciate the writing of that show. It was a good one.
Laura M 17th May 2005, 09:42 AM I never watched Raymond on prime time. The re-runs are on from 7-8 and for some reason I find myself the past few months watching as I clean up dinner, check email, etc and I found it very funny. The father is hysterical as is the brother. It's all writing and delivery, but so many things reminded me of my family - at times. Missed the finale however - I was at a school board meeting, and my teenagers were supposed to tape it for me and forgot. I'm sure it'll be on again.
Laura

The finale itself wasn't the strongest episode - but it was still good. I liked the recap show, which preceded the finale. I'm not a fan of the brother - I enjoy the parents the most. They're hysterical.
Marie: "We've been married 46 years - we've seen the highs and the lows."
Frank: "What day was the high?"
A real-life version - a few years back (six or seven, maybe?) my fiancé's sister and her family bought a house across the street from his parents. I mean it quite literally - they are across the street and one house over. It was a good move for them - free and convenient babysitting, and always someone around to borrow a cup of sugar :) - but wow. I mean, I love my family, but if I lived across the street from my mother, I'd go insane! They seem to be quite good at leading separate lives, though - and my fiancé's mother is nothing like Marie, so it all works out fine. :lmao:

I saw an interesting interview with Martin Sheen, he said that people actually come up to him and ask for JED BARTLETT'S autograph and ask him how he deals with the Iranians and Iraqis. They think he is the real president.

So explain WHY "Number 1" was persuaded to go over the holographic record of the first Starship Enterprise in the first place. I admit it was an "interesting" way of tying the different series together.
STNG was an excellent series.
DS9 had the best characters.
"Q" is the best of all the ST characters
ST Voyager stunk up the place
Original Trek was only OK because it was "original"
Never saw the animated series.
ST Enterprise never recovered from a disastrous first season.
I loved the plots on Babylon 5. Characters were terrific. Acting was fair. Toughest part for me to understand was that the creator shut it down because he said what he wanted to say, not because audience lost interest.
See my other post about Star Wars Ep. 3.

Star Trek the next generation was awesome.
Deep Space Nine and Babalon 5 had outrageuos battle scenes excellent plots
Voyager was to inconsistant but you had to love 7 of 9 and numerous run ins with the Borg

Do you think this is because Voyager and Enterprise were both conceived and executed after Gene Roddenberry's death? It was really his galaxy-view that made ST such a great series.
It's like "West Wing" after Aaron Sorkind stopped writing it. It just lacked the wit and repartee that it had in the first 5 seasons.

SteelWoman 26th May 2005, 04:06 PM I don't think he got "ripped off" in that he clearly has a record deal coming. I'm a big fan of Bo (he's one of US here in 'Bama) but I really didn't think in the last show that he wow-ed 'em like he had in previous shows - I don't think any of the songs were his best performance. It coulda/shoulda' been different - I think if he'd just owned the stage that night like he had in previous shows he would have turned the tide.
Craig H. 26th May 2005, 04:11 PM Steel, I'm going to have to disagree. Of course I admit to being a rocker, and Vehicle is, and has been, one of my favorite songs. That said, to me, Bo's version of "Vehicle" Tuesday night was the highlight of the whole competition. Ms. Underwood certainly looks good, but when she did anything other than country she was like a catfish who had jumped out of the lake. IMHO, of course.

Yes, and I would think that old Ides of March cover will be one of the songs on the first album. It's been a while since a southern rock band has made the big time, so maybe that is the direction he will go. Hope so.
I usually have a strong dislike for "reality" shows, so this was the first season I gave Idol a chance. I'm glad I did.
SteelWoman 26th May 2005, 04:37 PM Actually I mostly watched it during commercials on the Speed Channel - can't miss Two Wheel Tuesdays on the Speed Channel! :D I'm not a fan of reality shows either, which I refer to as "LCD TV" (Lowest Common Denominator TV). Though I will admit one such guilty pleasure - Survivor. Though even that one has been a disappointment of late. MY idea of "Survivor" - strand 'em on the island with nothing, set up cameras in fixed positions and GO AWAY for 6 months - whomever is still standing when the boat shows up in 6 months wins.

No, its not, but still I think she did not dive heads first into things like Bo did. I am not saying that she was bad, by any means. She is quite talented. But, IMHO, she lacked the stage presence of Bo, and a lot of that comes from confidence.
Again, Bo has been around the game (music) a while. He even fronted a band didn't he? I have been on stage a few times myself, and the only way to be successful is to approach it with almost wreckless abandon, and hope that practice, rehersal, and talent gets you through.
Of course she is beautiful. Maybe that's why I didn't pay as close attention to her singing as I did Bo's?
Does Carrie have the chops to be great? Absolutely.

You make a very good point. :tg: After Gene's death the franchise lost its way. Without a doubt his vision of the future and his ability to use social problems and bring that drama to life made the ST, STNG & DS9 great.

CONGRATS! You are one of the few who remember the animated series! I have an on-going debate with the barkeeps at ST:TE about whether it really is a series.....
As for ST:ENT I originally thought things went bad but then realized they went into a different trunk timeline.....I was OK then.
As I said, I love all 6 series and all 10 movies.....and willing to discuss warp theory at a moment's notice!
Oh, for those who wonder about the six series: TOS (the original series), TAS (animated), TNG (Next Gen), DS9 (Deep Space Nine), VOY (Voyager), ENT (Enterprise).
