Read 8.2.2 of ISO 9001:2000 or ISO/TS16949 2nd edition. The clause only requires that they do not audit their own work.

This is as I understand and is the reason that it is in the audit section of the standard.
I would say that the product audit must be performed by some one who is qualified as an auditor.

Final inspection, dock audit, layout etc are parts of the normal flow and appear in the control plan, the product audit is different and should be part of the audit schedule.

I have 8.2.2 here in front of me and it makes no mention of product audits. Probably because the "process approach" to auditing qualifies a quality system. 8.2.4 Monitoring and measurement of product, is what is the requirement. I believe ISO/TC 176 was very careful not specifically use the words product audit.

We have been registered since Feb 1st of 1994. Holding a title of Corporate Auditor, neither I or the registrar have ever done an audit on a product to see if it met requirements.

Product audits are part of our control system falling within 8.2.4 not 8.2.2.

Maybe I am way off as this a further requirement of the AIAG or the customer? I really don't know what ISO 9001 registered MFG facility that doesn't test it's product to customer requirements. I think we can really get into micromanaging quality philosophy. The only one I have "macro" respect for is TPS (Toyota Production System), whose results speak for themselves.

You are quite correct. However, TS adds Product audit under 8.2.2.3. I was under the impression that is where the question originally came from.
