Evening all
I am shortly about to embark on a new metrology job in the automotive sector. I have a good understanding of ISO9001:2000/AS9100:B/TS157/ISO17025:1999 from the aerospace and calibration sectors. Could you give me a short introduction of the key differences please. What should I look out for, i.e. traps for the unwary, points to look out for.

I don't know how much you've looked into it yet, so I'm not trying to be cute when I say that TS 16949 IS ISO 9000:2000, but with some additional clauses specific to the automotive industry. If you take a copy of the TS 16949 standard, you'll see that the old ISO 9000 stuff is in there word for word, within boxes and then the stuff outside the boxes is the TS supplements.

I'm a little shaky with the metrology aspect, but I'm sure someone else here will be able to help you better. One thing I will point out is that TS 16949 has certain requirements for in-house laboratories, and one way (but not the required way) to fulfill this is to be ISO17025 accredited.
Likewise, for external labs, ISO17025 or must be "acceptable to the customer" - customer, of course, being the customer of the company hiring the lab.

Can anyone point me in the direction of a (free?) downloadable copy of TS16949?

At any price, this document should answer most questions you have about TS16949. If your organization is not AIAG, perhaps your customer will download a copy for you.

Although it describes and excerpts many paragraphs of the Standard, itself, it does not contain a true, unedited copy of the Standard. Appendix F merely describes how to get copies of the actual Standard.

There used to be "pirate" copies of "Implementation" available free all over the internet, but AIAG has been systematically shutting those down (they can Google, too, you know.)
