View Full Version : Your top 10 picks for greatest Rock n' Roll songs

RosieA

In his latest book, "Broken Prey" John Sanford's character, Lucas Davenport, is given an iPod and a gift certificate for 100 songs by his wife for his birthday. As the murder mystery unfolds, Davenport obsesses over what songs to include in his list of 100. At the end of the book, Sanford unveils the list. It contains, oddly, no Beatles songs.

My husband and I immediately started our list, and it wasn't hard to do at all. 100 would be too many for the Cove, but how about your top 10 picks? Here's mine:
1. Stairway to Heaven.......Led Zeppelin
2. Hey Jude.....................Beatles
3. Sympathy for the Devil...Rolling Stones
4. Bohemian Rhapsody.......Queen
5. Losing My Religion.........REM
6. Chop Suey...................System of a Down
7. Soul Man.....................Blues Brothers
8. Baba O'Reilly.................Who
9. Politik..........................Cold Play
10. Do Wa Ditty................Manfred Mann

Rosie, I don't know how you can say this isn't hard - it's killing me!

Narrowing it down to 10 is near impossible. I don't even know if I could narrow it down to 10 *albums*. I know I'm going to look back at this list and think "crap, I forgot [insert title here]".

I can't say that all of these would be classified as "rock 'n' roll" - but still, my top 10.

1) Animal - Def Leppard (Hysteria) - ooh, that's a tough call, actually - that whole album is incredible.
2) Nautical Disaster - The Tragically Hip (Day for Night)
3) Just - Radiohead (The Bends)
4) Grey Street - Dave Matthews Band (Busted Stuff)
5) Rose-Coloured Glasses - Blue Rodeo (Outskirts)
6) Solsbury Hill - Peter Gabriel (Car)
7) Possession - Sarah McLachlan (Fumbling Towards Ecstasy)
8) Where the Streets Have No Name - U2 (The Joshua Tree)
9) Better Together - Jack Johnson (In Between Dreams - a recent release, but that is an incredible song! I highly recommend that album - it's good for mellowing out...)
10) Bohemian Like You - The Dandy Warhols (Thirteen Tales from Urban Bohemia)
...but seriously - ask me tomorrow and it might change.

My fiancé is much more into some of the earlier classics - Zeppelin, Dylan, Neil Young, etc. etc. I never used to be a fan, but I'm getting more into Zeppelin lately...don't know their stuff well enough to add a song, though. (This should cause some controversy - I honestly think that Stairway is one of the most over-rated songs of all time...)

Never been a Beatles fan, though. I don't mind their stuff as remakes - but I don't like it performed by them. Weird, huh?

Actually the members of the band thought it was over-rated as well. I think I heard a Jimmy Page interview a long time ago where he said that their masterwerk was Kashmir. If it was not for the soaring guitar solo on the studio version of Stairway I would have to agree.

Top 10 list? Don't know if I could, especially since at one time I was into jazz-rock fusion, and its unclear which ones would qualify....

This seems to be a case of ambiguous specifications--the category is "top 10 songs" and what we're getting is the top ten recordings, but never mind. I have 11, in no particular order:

A Day in the Life (Beatles)
Kid Charlemagne (Steely Dan)
Hotel California (Eagles)
Dream On (Aerosmith)
You Never Can Tell (Chuck Berry)
Satisfaction (Rolling Stones)
Layla (Derek and the Dominoes)
Crossroads (Cream)
Suite:Judy Blue Eyes (Crosby, Stills & Nash)
I'd Love to Change the World (Ten Years After)
Gimme Some Lovin' (Spencer Davis Group)

The fiancé has this Zeppelin double disc (early years/latter years) and surprisingly enough, I think I prefer the latter years. Usually, with bands like that, I tend to lean toward the older stuff...

Kashmir is definitely a great song. I think I like "What is and What Never Should Be" - though I don't know if that's what it's called. As I say, I am only a recent Zeppelin convert.

But, in all honesty, I *could* just take the ten tracks off of Hysteria to make my list - that album is one of the greatest albums of all time. Sold sixteen million copies. Smashing.

And limiting the list to 100 songs was a dilemma in the Sanford book, so I understand how hard it can be to pick just 10. As I read your lists I think, "Shoot! I love Jack Johnson too, or how could I have forgotten Born to be Wild, or I adore Buffalo Springfield, why didn't I include them?" It's a challenge!

As for Stairway...I think it's a gestalt thing. It's the period in time, the harmonies, and you must listen to it in the dark, through headphones, at midnight. ;)

Chop Suey must be listened to after a bad day at work, driving home on a country road, exceeding the speed limit, and singing very loud.

It's situational music!

Rachel

It's situational music!

Definitely - that's what makes it so hard. I listened to "Busted Stuff" (Dave Matthews Band) on my way in today - I can guarantee that I would have forgotten how good of a song 'Grey Street' is if I hadn't pulled that off the shelf this morning.

Trust me, music isn't something I take lightly. The fiancé and I had settled on a first dance song, or so we thought - then it got released on the radio and has since been horrendously overplayed in our area ("Push" - Sarah McLachlan). It's still a great song, but I think it will 'date' us...as in

"What was your first dance song?"
"'Push' by Sarah McLachlan."
"Ah...2005. Good year. No hockey, though."

And before you say "aww, that won't happen"...see below:

"What was your first dance song?"
"'I Will Always Love You' by Whitney Houston."
"Ah...1993. Good year. Jays won the World Series."

So since then I've been flipflopping between three or four songs, and I just can't make up my mind. We shall see.

A very difficult task, and if asked again tomorrow my list would probably be somewhat different (with exception of the first 5).

In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida – Iron Butterfly
Smoke on the Water – Deep Purple
Wish You Were Here – Pink Floyd
Do You Feel Like I Do – Peter Frampton
Hotel California – Eagles
Highway 61 Revisited – the Johnny Winter version

Light My Fire – The Doors

And how could I forget a song by one of the all time greatest vocalist: Why? – Yoko Ono :tg:

Know what you mean..."Love, Look at the Two of Us" was the wedding song of my era. Made me wanna puke then and still does. Our wedding song was "Ramblin' Gamblin' Man", which was kinda inappropriate for a wedding, but memorable. Choose what you love and will continue to love in years to come.

My son just got married last year and they had Bridesmaids and groomsmen walk in to "Bliss" by Phish. My son, husband and I walked in to "Jim" by Faith No More. His wife and her parents walked in to "Tracy's Song" by Nelson. It was memorable because the last two were quiet acoustic instrumental pieces by hair metal bands. :D

In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida! The world's best make-out song! How soon we forget.

See, situational music again!

Thanks, I'll probably loose sleep over this!

(1) Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd
(2) Don't Be Late - SAGA
(3) Touch To Much - AC/DC
(4) Boy Of Summer - Don Hanley
(5) Don't Cry - Guns & Roses

(7) Jessy's Girl - Rick Springfield
(8) Go'na Mis you - Rolling Stones
(9) You Took The Words Right Out of My Mouth - Meatloaf
(10) Life is Just a Fantasy - ALDO NOVA

These are not in any particular order (Now that I look at them, maybe they are) and not the top ten out of a hunderd, just some of the first ones to come to mind. Then again maybe these are the top ten? Tomorrow these may not make the top 100 list. Depends on the mood?

Picking the top ten recordings is a hard task, but picking the best songwriter of our times and maybe the best poet ever, is easy! That award has to go to our Canadian friends, Leonard Cohen. Even at the age of seventy he is dynamite. Truly a gift for all ages.

Like the other it's hard to put together a top 10 list of songs. It depends on what's going on at the time.

That being said, here's my list based on what I am doing.

1. Cruising in my El Camino – anything by the Beach Boys
2. Cruising in my Impala – anything country (my wife is usually with me)
3. Late nights working – Small Faces, Ogdens Nut Gone Flake
4. Friday afternoons – anything by Jethro Tull
5. Doing massive data entry – Pink Floyd, The Wall
6. Feeling blue – anything by Moody Blues
7. Want to feel blue – anything by Neil Diamond
8. Long drives – ELP, Brain Salad Surgery
9. Need a quick vacation – Beach Boys, Kokomo
10. Need to keep focused for reading or writing – Beethoven

Yes, it's tough seeing the icons of youth get old, although in the case of Walsh, his own aging has obviously been chemically accelerated. I felt better looking at Glenn Frey.

I can't believe Jordan Knight (of 'New Kids on the Block' fame) is in his thirties.

I don't know if I can come up with just ten. My problem is I still listen to the hair/metal bands of the 80's on my XM Radio! Throw in some newer hard rock, as long as there's no one scratching a record back and forth... (I will admit that Anthrax's Bring the Noise and I'm the Man are top fav's...)

How do I pick my favorite Kiss songs?? I could just pick 10 songs from Double Platinum to make it easy...

Old Metallica, before they were well known and Bob Rock smoothed them out. Old Def Leppard: Pyromania remains a permanent fixture of my high school years. Hmmm... Even Twisted Sister's I Wanna Rock is era defining.

I know I'll screw this up:

I wanna rock and roll all night - Kiss
Detroit rock city - Kiss
Holy Wars - Megadeth
Symphony of destruction - Megadeth
Women - Def Leppard
One - Metallica
Back in black - AC/DC
Cemetary gates - Pantera
Indian - Anthrax
Little pig song - Green Jelly

I knew it, I'm out of choices already.......

JSW05,

Your stock has just gone up in my book - 1st was the reference to Steely Dan Kid Charlemane (you might be a madman in their eyes) and 2nd was the John Prine Illegal Smile. One of the sadest lines in any song is off of Prime Prine:
There's a hole in daddys arm where all the money goes,
and Jesus Christ died for nothing I suppose.
Little pitchers have big ears,
don't stop and count the years.
And sweet songs never last too long on,
Broken radios, oh oh oh oh.
A few from my list.
"No Quarter" Led Zepplin
"Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys" Traffic
"Green Grass & High Tides" Outlaws
"Dreams" Molly Hatchet
"School" SuperTramp
"Heard it in a Love Song" Marshal Tucker
"All Along the Watch Tower" Dave Mason
"Kid" Pretenders
"While my Guitar Gently Weeps" Beatles
Just about anything by Souxie and the Banshies.

I've been a Prine fan since the early seventies when he used to play Chicago places like the Earl of Old Town and Quiet Knight. I saw him not too long ago at Ravinia, a very cool outdoor venue outside Chicago, and he hasn't lost a step.

Most people I talk to don't have a clue who he [John Prine]is.

And that's a shame, although many would recognize some of his songs, such as "Angel from Montgomery" which was a modest hit for Judy Collins in the seventies, and "Paradise" which John Denver covered.

While on a road trip Sunday I changed the radio station and the Def Leppard song "Pour Some Sugar On Me" was on the radio. I told my husband that this was one of my favorite rock songs - always puts a smile on my face and puts me in a good mood.

I can't really think too much about a list since I'm on my way out the door but here's ten rock songs I think are great in no particular order - hope I am not copying others' lists - I will read them tomorrow and probably revise mine anyways:

The Best of Times - Styx
Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd
Rock & Roll All Night - KISS
Hotel California - Eagles
American Girl - Tom Petty
Pour Some Sugar on Me - Def Leppard
I Believe In You - Don Williams (okay maybe that's not rock but I like it)
Barracuda - Heart

sorry only had time for 8 - will think more about this!!!

I had to really think about this, but here it goes:

1. Stairway to Heaven - Zeppelin (obvious)
2. Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd (live version, from Delicate Sound of Thunder)
3. Jungleland - Springsteen (one of his 'less popular' songs, but a great one)
4. Sympathy for the Devil - Stones
5. Sweet Child O' Mine - Guns 'n Roses
6. Hysteria - Def Leppard
7. Killer of Giants - Ozzy
8. Touch and Go - Emerson, Lake and Powell (not Palmer, Powell)
9. Lunatic Fringe - Tom Cochrane (had coffee at his house once!)
10. Cocaine - Clapton

This could easily have turned into a top 100 or 1000 list.

Other favs, in addition to Greg B's list and "Thunderroad"

"Blinded by the light " again Springsteen, not Manfred Mann
"La Grange" ZZ Top - again situational - my sons wrestling team theme song - gotta blast it when its on the radio.

China Grove - Doobie Brothers
Swingtown - Steve Miller Band
Theme from an Italien Restaurant - Billy Joel
The Reaper - Blue Oyster Cult

Not exactly rock"

Shining Star - Earth Wind & Fire
Margaritaville and Cheeseburger in Paradise - Jimmey Buffet

I couldn't possibly pick just 10 greatest songs, let alone put them in order -- I would argue with myself constantly. In some cases it'd be hard to pick the 10 greatest just by some of my favorite groups! I think more along the line of, when I listen to the radio, if I were in charge of what was on the playlist, would I include a certain song and, if so, would it be a "once a year" player, or "once a month" or "at least 3 times a week" player.

But while rock is my favorite music-- from soft/mellow rock to fairly heavy metal -- I do find myself enjoying some country stuff in my more mellow moods. Aging? Maybe. But before I walked into work this mornin' I was blastin' "Lucky Ones", so I ain't dead yet. :agree1:

As with everyone else, I'll have second thoughts about this list and most likely 3rd & 4th but - I have put it down for you all to see...

Stairway to Heaven - Zeppelin
Freebird - Lynyrd Skynyrd
Green Grass and High Tides - The Outlaws
Highway Song - Blackfoot
Layla - Derek & The Dominos
Rock and Roll Hootchie Koo - Rick Derringer
Bad to the Bone - George Thorogood & The Destroyers
Day In The Life - The Beatles
Who Are You - The Who
White Rabbit - The Jefferson Airplane

From top to bottom (1 - 10) these are my picks today.

travlinman
3rd August 2005, 01:20 PM
No particular order:

Song For You - The Outlaws
Boogie No More - Molly Hatchet
Saturday Night Special - Skynyrd
Melissa - Allman Bros.
Highway Song - Blackfoot
Heard It In a Love Song - Marshall Tucker
Dreams - Molly Hatchet
Hush - Deep Purple
Stranglehold - Uncle Ted (Nugent)
Without You - Doobie Bros.

I have played in bands for years. You could probably tell from my list that I am very heavy into Southern Rock. As other have said, this is very difficult to do. I could list 100 songs and not even scratch the surface. I like Rock, Country, Bluegrass, R&B, Soul, Jazz, Gospel and Classical. I don't much care for operatic scores and I totally abhor rap. I hope it goes away!

This might be a little off topic, but anyway> Has anyone seen the special on PBS about Sun Records, the birthplace of Rock and Roll? What a great show. It had performances and interviews with the ones that got it all started. To name a few, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Elvis, Johnny Cash, etc.
It kinda reminded of a PBS show a few years back called The History of Rock and Roll, but I liked this one better.

Do all females dislike Molly Hatchet? I have dated 3 different women who could not stand MH. They rock! They are probably one of the tightest bands ever, musically. Now there are some live cuts that are not too hot. I attribute those to the influence of that "illegal smile" referenced in earlier posts. I do admit that Danny Joe Brown's (R.I.P.) vocals are an acquired taste. He was a great performer. Jimmy Farrar was pretty good. Phil McCormack is currently their lead singer and does a real good job.
Rickey Medlocke, currently with Skynyrd, has the best range and the most pure Southern Rock voice. Listen to some of his stuff on an old Blackfoot album (CD), he'll blow you away. Gregg Allman has the best "bluesy" voice. If I could sing like any one of those guys I wouldn't be here today. I'd either be dead or out on the road.

I like Molly Hatchet too! I thought the ladies disliked Led Zepplin the most, and particularly the song, "In though the out Door".

1) Stairway to Heaven, Led Zepplin
2) Fool In the Rain, Led Zepplin
3) Left Turn on a Red Light, Blackfoot
4) Ain't Talkin 'bout love, Van Halen
5) Ballard of Curtis Lowe, Lynard Skynard
6) Simple Man, Lynard Skynard

Well, here's one lady who adores led Zepplin and has since album #1. Honestly, I'm not sure I know who Molly Hatchet is. None of the songs sound familiar. There was a period of time when the kids were little that we could neither afford to buy music nor did we have time to listen to anything, so there's a black hole in the early to mid 80s...is that the right era?

Ok, I know I said something to the effect that I would have a hard time with a list, But this is just too much fun to miss. So right now, at this moment, here are the top 10 that kind of fit the rock mold. In no particular order:

Dreams I’ll Never See - Allman Bros or Molly Hatchet depending on the mood
Kashmir – Zep
Working Man – Rush
KarnEvil 9 - Emerson Lake and Palmer (some would argue if it belongs here, but, hey, its my list. If you like, substitute Tarkus)
Starship Trooper – Yes, the Rick Wakeman version, if you please
Lady – Styx
Only the Beginning – Chicago. The full version (not the single) where the minor key is resolved into the major on the first note of the trombone solo. My choice for the best note, ever, in rock, BTW.
The Real Me – The Who
Hold On – Triumph A little obscure, but if you like older arena style rock it might be worth your time to find it…

Ask me again in 10 minutes and the list will be different. So much great music, so little time.

Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends,
We're so glad you could attend, come inside come inside.
There beneath the glass is a real blade of grass,
so be careful as you pass, move along, move along.
Great song.
Didn't Tarkus have that half armadilo and half tank creature on the cover?
If I was picking a Triumph song, it would be either Fight the Good Fight or Alied Forces.

Molley Hatchet had some of the greatest Album artwork to this day. Frank Zappas' "Overnight Sensation" had some great work in it also.

Tarkus:
"Confusion will be my epitaph.." Yes, that armadillo is Tarkus. The live version is so much better than the studio version, IMO.

Also, Triumph "Power of Music (?)" is a great song.

Finally, on Zappa. Weird lyrics, but the Mothers of Invention was one of the tightest bands around, and played some very, very difficult music. I was wondering if anyone would mention them. (BTW, they are the "Frank Zappa and the Mothers" mentioned in the garage band classic "Smoke on the Water").

I have been a Zappa fan for a long time. It was because of his music that I started listening to and enjoying jazz. One of the musicians on the "Overnight Sensation" LP was a violinist named Jean Luc Ponty. I was never a fan of the violin until I heard him play, one word - fantastic.:nopity:

As for the lyrics??? They were different to say the least, but some hit home - "I am slime from the video oozing along on your living room floor" (too much TV and bad programming). Others well, all I say is listen to Dinah-Mo Hum or Dirty Love, but don't do it at work - NSFW.

As further evidence that I'm older than dirt, I saw Zappa and the Mothers in in 1968 (I think), opening for either Cream or the Doors, at the old Chicago Coliseum (http://hockey.ballparks.com/NHL/ChicagoBlackhawks/veryoldindex.htm)http://elsmar.com/Forums/images/smilies/omg.gif

Wow, its been a long time since I listened to any of his work. The only format I have is on LP. You are right, that is some great stuff.

My favorite Zappa line, at least the one I can't seem to get to quit bouncing around in my head is "..flies all green and buzzing in my dungon of dispair.." (off of ship arriving too late to save a drowning witch, maybe??). Its been at least a decade since I last heard it, again on vinyl.

Laura, according to the directory we were supposed to get that concert last night. I was all ready - popcorn popped, beverage ready - only to be treated to an extended infomercial for a cd of old R&B stuff. Nothing against the Tams, etc., but it was not what I was looking for, and it seemed the "breaks" took up more time than the music did. Maybe we'll get Bruce yet.

You know, my folks hated the late 60's, early 70's music I listened to. With a few exceptions. They liked the Eagles and a few of the softer groups. Hated Sabbath and the other hard rockers. Point is that I seriously doubt that the crap being generated today will be so fondly remembered and revered in 25-30 years. Generation Gap? No, I just know the difference between good music and crap! Remember the old Cheech & Chong bit about "Hmmm looks like s**t!" I think that would aptly apply to rap and hip hop and techno pop!

Alright, I will go drink a Geritol martinin for lunch! And change my Depends! Have a great day all!

I was extremely surprised while reading through all of these posts how infrequently The Boss was on anyone's list

Thank you :thanx: for giving him the attention he so richly deserves. Putting together a top ten song list would be next to impossible for me. I prefer to list my top ten albums, but even that is difficult as after "Born to Run" (IMO, the greatest rock album ever made), all of Bruce's other albums (with the E Street Band) are tied for second. Next would be Boston's first two, then "Bat Out of H*ll", most anything by ELO, YES, The Cars, Dire Straits, Rush, Def Leppard, The Moody Blues, Styx, REO, Triumph... (sorry, not a real big Stones, Eagles or Zepplin fan) See, I can go on for a long time.

By the way, the PBS concert was from a 2000/2001 Madison Square Garden concert prior to 9/11, and the DVD is amazing. I highly receommend it, though you can buy it for around $30.

Hey now, hey now - I take offense to this. There are plenty of excellent artists/groups out right now that are generating excellent music every year.
Cases in point:

Jack Johnson could be the John Denver of our generation.
Dave Matthews Band combines rock with a jazz sound and is liked by people of all age groups.
The Tragically Hip is a great Canadian band that has been making awesome music for almost 20 years - and are still going strong.
Radiohead is known as one of the most innovative bands of its time.

That's just a sample. There are plenty - PLENTY - of talented artists out there today, and PLENTY of them that are making music that I personally will be listening to in 20 or 30 years. No one genre of music is enjoyed by everyone - but don't lump the entire generation into one category of "crap".

Cheers,
-R.

Rachel:

I have to agree that there are some great bands out there now, but you have to look for them. The major labels are mainly manufacturing bands, or pushing the newest heartthrob singer. Why not? Its a tried and proven way to make $. The truly talented have an uphill climb.

However, I think the internet has a chance of changing that. In fact, I am surprised that it has not had a greater impact than it has. Back before the early 1970s, many radio stations could, and did, produce records for local acts. They even played those records on the air. The mega-stations now sometimes don't even have a real DJ, and play lists are often determined by corporate types. Anyone else hear about the recent payola accusations?

There are now on the market sophisticasted recording devices that you literally can carry under your arm. I saw one in use a couple of weekends ago. The one I saw sold for ~$3500, a lot of money, but if 2 or 3 groups pool their resources, it is not too bad. They can produce (meaning record, mix, everything) their own albums, put clips of the album on a website (or something like Napster, maybe?) and at least get the music out there. What is lacking here, though, is the marketing muscle of the big labels. I'm not sure how to get around that yet, but I have the basis of an idea that just might work. Initial distribution could be as simple as a USPS drop.

I am hoping we come full circle, where an innovative garage band might have a better shot.

Rachel,

I may be an ole babe, but I have lots of newbies on my play list...just so you don't think w're ignoring the current groups...

I too love Jack Johnson along with Polyphonic Spree, Cake, (I adore Long Line of Cars) Coldplay, (Clocks!), Creed, and about 1/3 of what System of a Down does. (The rest is cr-p!)

I also like Nelly McKay, Nelly Furtado, Sheryl Crow, Norah Jones, Jason Mraz, and a very talented local group called "Sons of Pitches".

I'm not thrilled with Rap, but occasionally there's a great Rap song, like Gangster's Paradise (and it's Weird Al takeoff: Amish Paradise)

I like lyrics and harmony. I think that's why I like System of a Down so much. A lot of their stuff is just awful, and then they'll have something absolutely amazing like Chop Suey, Toxicity, or Ariels that are just gorgeous music, and amazing lyrics. Makes you wonder how people managed to wade through the first 7 songs on the CD to find the first good one.

I think it helps that I have a kid who's a music industry publicist and he feeds me stuff.

Jack is fantastic. My sister-in-law got us tickets to his concert in the area this fall - but we had to pass them up - we had a friend's wedding going on that day. Saddest realization I've had in a long time. I gotta say, I'm not familiar with the Spree - Coldplay is another of my faves. Have a Jason Mraz album - saw him in an interview, though, and came the conclusion that he could never love anyone as much as he loves himself - has sort of put me off. Too cocky.

Love Blue Rodeo (Canadian), love Sarah McLachlan, love The Hip, love Ben Harper...love a lot of stuff, really. The fiancé just picked up Bedouin Soundclash - they're out of Montreal, I think - they're taking off up here.

I'm not thrilled with Rap, but occasionally there's a great Rap song, like Gangster's Paradise (and it's Weird Al takeoff: Amish Paradise)

I'm a fan of the Black-Eyed Peas. Hip-hop, yes, but they are really good - the songs aren't laden with rhymes about guns, sex and disrespect (quite the opposite, actually). One of my friends saw them in concert not too long ago and said that the energy they had was just incredible. Other rap artists - A Tribe Called Quest, Beastie Boys...they have proven that they have staying power.

I think it helps that I have a kid who's a music industry publicist and he feeds me stuff.

Can your kid feed me stuff too? That's awesome!

I haven't bought any Black Eyed Peas stuff yet, but they are on my list. I've been seeing a lot of good stuff about them.

Sarah McLaughlin (one of my son's agency's clients...along with Cold Play, Dave Matthews, David Gray, Mike Doughty, Bare Naked Ladies, Avril Lavigne, and buckets of others) is too dreamy for me. Her sound is real soft. Or maybe I just haven't heard enough of her.

Some of the stuff he sends is really vile, (Badly Drawn Boy comes to mind) but there are always goodies of one kind or another. Ya, even Jason Mraz's picture on his album cover suggests me might be an "aren't I too cool" kinda guy.

Another CD I want to get is a group called Gomez from the UK.

So...tonite's PBS special is John Denver....not anywhere near rock and roll...

But who doesn't remember....

"You fill up my senses, like a night in the forest, like the mountains in springtime, like a storm in the desert......come fill me again."

I still prefer..."A screen door slammed, Mary your dress waved, Like a vision she dances across the porch as the radio played "Roy Orbison's" singin' for the lonely - hey that's me and I want you only......" Thunderroad is probably my all time favorite.

Can't relate to all of the latest tunes mentioned....like some of it though.

In-a -Gadda-da-vida, 1986???!!! Get a grip, man!

That was a great make-out song in 1969! Not one I'm likely to forget...Situational music again!

Ohio was Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young in 1970...right after the Kent State Massacre...you know..."4 dead in Oh High Oh". Massive rioting on college campuses across the US, my college closed for the summer 3 weeks early after the Buffalo Police tear gassed everything in sight including the college president. (my husband has yet to forgive me for dragging him up to the front of campus to see what was going on. :D )

I should have included Buffalo Springfield in my top 10 list. Their 3 albums were absolutely seminal. Out of that group came Neil Young, Steve Stills, Jim Messina, Richie Furay, and a drummer named Dewey something who I never heard anything about again. Great, great , music.

I also forgot to include Harry Nielson whose music plays in my head all the time. Aerial Ballet is my favorite, followed by Nielson Schmielson. Aerial ballet had a poem on the cover that I memorized: "Dewey was the morning in the month of May, Dewey was the Admiral in Manila Bay, Dewey were her eyes, those royal orbs of blue, but dewey feel discouraged? We do not think we dew." Ah, Harry Nielson. RIP.

Down on the Corner is also Credence Clearwater, and I think both of the CCR songs were circa 1970 or 71.

Fire and Rain was James Taylor in 1970 or 71.

Oh no..."While My Guitar Gently Weeps" was on The White Album. Eric Clapton played back-up. The first big hit Harrison had all by himself was "My Sweet Lord" in 1971.

I gotta ask my husband about Blue Moon. It's playing in my head, but I'm better at remembering lyrics while he specializes in the band names.

A little clarity (or more smoke maybe): My guitar was on the white album, but the white album was really more of a collection of individual work than a group product. This was when the beatles were beginning to drift apart.

Hi all,

Went to my Def Leppard concert lastnight at Molson Amphitheatre in Toronto. Fantabulous. I gotta say - the boys from Sheffield still know how to rock, so many years later...and considering that these guys are getting up in years, they still have a ton of energy. Played the better part of Hysteria, a few tracks from their older albums (including my personal fave Def song, Photograph), and some newer stuff - including a song from their upcoming album (which sounds like an album of cover songs??).

In any event - well worth the $60 or so per ticket - and I got my t-shirt, so I'm happy. :) Long live the Def, that's what I say.

Cheers,

So since then I've been flipflopping between three or four songs, and I just can't make up my mind. We shall see.

So, Rachel, whens the wedding and did you ever decide on what songs to play?

I went to my niece's wedding in Atlanta a few weeks ago and the cake topper was the couple from "Futurama". I took more pictures of the cake topper than I did of the bride!

Wedding is in two weeks :mg: and we certainly have picked some songs. First dance is the one that we chose in the first place...kind of a bummer that friends of ours used it just a couple of weeks ago (a Sarah McLachlan song), but you know - whatever. The crossover guests on both guest lists amount to all of 10 people, so we'll deal with it.

Our wedding party will be introduced to the tune of "Start Me Up" by Mick & co.; we will be introduced to "Pour Some Sugar on Me" - I don't think the boy was too thrilled, being the loyal Def fan that I am, I was ready to squeeze out the waterworks if I didn't get my way. I *am* the bride, after all... :lmao:. I mean, you gotta insist on the *important* things, right? ;)

Wow, some really cool stuff mentioned in this thread like:

Johnny Winter doing Highway 61……….I saw him do it live, too cool.

Ship Arriving too Late……Zappa is way out there! “And then…..cars would crash all over the place as a result of people with Hawaiian shirts on……….lookin’ up to see her face”

Blackfoot, SRV, the less commercial Zeppelin stuff, etc.

Very true, Stairway was a highly over rated Zeppelin tune. I am really tired of hearing it but I still love the Cadillac commercials!

My less than commercial favorites?

Faces – “Had Me a Real Good Time”
Humble Pie – “Thirty Days in the Hole”
Stones – “Can’t you hear me Knockin”
Zeppelin – “Ten Years Gone”
Yes – “America”
CCR – “Born on the Bayou”
Janis – “Move Over”
Faces – “Stay with Me”
Zeppelin – “Nobody’s Fault but Mine”
Foghat – “Chateau Lafite ’59 Boogie”

Speaking of weddings and music, when my wife and I were planning our wedding the subject of a band came up, and I told her she should feel free to just pick one, and that if need be, we could go and hear them play somewhere before making a decision. We wound up booking a band without hearing them play first (on a friend's recommendation) and they turned out to be the worst band in the history of music. As it turned out it didn't matter much because there was a great deal of consumption of alcohol going on (my wife's ancestry is Irish and the wedding was on St. Patrick's day--another story). Four or five years later we were attending another wedding reception and once again, the band was very bad. At one point I leaned over to my wife and said, "I thought the band that played at our wedding was the worst ever, but I think this one might be even worse." My wife gave me that look and said, "This is the band that played at our wedding."

Speaking of weddings and music,

I had a musician friend that had written something years before I got married, and still had a copy of it. I knew one day I'd need it...

We also got married at Loveland Castle, scale replica of a medieval castle here near Cincinnati, in costume. Even had a local TV station film it (never did get a copy). They took longer to setup than our ceremony...

Now back to the music...
