View Full Version : You can only choose one Rock n' Roll album to save
AllanJ 8th June 2005, 04:52 PM The other thread ( Your top 10 picks for greatest Rock n' Roll songs ) has many of us anguishing over our top ten songs. Difficult choice. But, let's turn the screw a bit, here is your dilemma:
Your house is on fire and you can only save 1 album. What will it be?
My Choice:
Days of Future Passed - Moody Blues
Rachel 8th June 2005, 05:16 PM If I was being cheeky, I'd say it would have to be the photo album.
Music? No way, that's too hard.
QChas 8th June 2005, 05:19 PM Allman Brothers Live At The Fillmore East. If this isn't available it would have to be a rockin' double album. The double album is required to clean out the seeds .... at least that was the main use back in the 70's :agree1:

It just so happens that they had one of those PBS fund raisers on last night - the Moody Blues live with a full orchestra. Wow.
Jim Wynne 8th June 2005, 06:07 PM Steely Dan--Aja
Ron Rompen 8th June 2005, 08:17 PM Damm, I -=HATE=- decisions like that......can I take my Led Zepplin boxed set?
If restricted to a SINGLE album, it would probably be Tangerine Dream 'Thief', although LKJohnson 'Forces of Victory' would be a close runner-up.
Can I get the wife and kids to each carry one?
And how about the computer??????
YankInOz 8th June 2005, 10:35 PM The firefighters would find my charred remains in the ashes with all my melted vinyls and CDs in my arms 'cause I would have been too distracted.."Ah, I'll save this one! No wait...this one! No...this (cough, cough) one! Oh, what about (cough, gasp) this..."

Great Post,
I'd possibly save 'Bat out of H**L' (if I still had it) but I would probably save 'Hotel California' . I know the eagles aren't exactly Rock N Roll.
I would then send my ex wife in to save 'Hot Choclate'.....Oh!!! wait a minute I don't have any 'Hot Choclate'...Oh! Well. At least it is warm out here on the lawn.... I should have grabbed some potatoes to roast. :lmao:
peteroldfield1971 9th June 2005, 08:53 AM The delicate sound of thunder - Pink Floyd. Need I say more?
Randy 9th June 2005, 10:59 AM Yes....Dark Side of the Moon :ko:
Steve Prevette 9th June 2005, 11:00 AM Harry Connick Jr.'s Red Light/Blue Light
(Big bands rule - forget this rock and roll stuff)
Randy Stewart 9th June 2005, 11:06 AM One album, , , probable be Houses of the Holy - Led ZepplinIf I couldn't reach that one then I'd go for The Best of Oingo Boingo.
IEGeek 9th June 2005, 11:32 AM Guns-N-Roses Live at CBGB
- Lots of great GNR songs, lots of great covers of Stones, The Who, Led Zepplin, Rush, Janis Joplin
chergh 9th June 2005, 11:32 AM Radiohead - OK Computer
Seminal album, 'nuff said :)
wmarhel 9th June 2005, 12:01 PM Iron Maiden's, "Live After Death". As a double album set, you have more music. :D
Wayne
Mike S. 9th June 2005, 12:52 PM Yes....Dark Side of the Moon :ko:
The fire would be depressing enough. If I then listened to Dark Side I might wanna go back into the fire. :mg:
I'd pick one of my "homemade" CD's with about 15 great songs from various artists. Is that cheating? :tg:
RosieA 9th June 2005, 03:02 PM Oh, what a dilemma! This is more painful than the top 10 songs for sure....but, the first three albums I bought were The Doors (first album) Cream's "Fresh Cream", and The Beatles "Sargent Pepper"
I think it'd have to be Sargent Pepper.
Rachel 9th June 2005, 03:28 PM after some thought...
it would be whichever of the following were closest and most easily accessible at the time:
def leppard - hysteria
radiohead - the bends
dave matthews band - under the table and dreaming
tragically hip - fully completely
...no, see, this is still too hard. :bonk:

And I thought you were a Fleetwood Mac fan.
OK - you deserve no mercy Rachel: Life's tough
CHOOSE !

That's the problem - I got to 4 and then realized that I'm completely ignoring the assignment. The best I can do is give you a list...but that kind of defeats the purpose of picking *one*. :whip:
Life *is* tough. :nopity:
Note - Marc, I think we could do with a crying emoticon. I've felt the need to use one quite a few times these past couple of weeks. So much pressure... :lmao:

Not good enough
CHOOSE :jawdrop: - THE FLAMES ARE GETTING CLOSER TO THE 4 ON YOUR LIST!
JerryStem 9th June 2005, 04:15 PM Considering I could replace any and all at will, and I listen to my XM Radio 99% of the time now, it's not as big a choice now:
Hmmm.... Probably Kiss: "Double Platinum". Plenty of classics, might even be one CD, I forget.
I've had this sort of happen: In 1997, when the Ohio River flooded in March, I lost all my vinyl albums, including old Alice Cooper and original Kiss albums. Not many, maybe 10-20 but sentimental. Included local radio station WEBN album projects of local groups from 70s and 80s.
I also lost about 200-300 cassettes! That was a bigger hit, alot of $ involved and some were hard to find.
Jerry :mg:
IEGeek 9th June 2005, 05:23 PM In this technological day and age, I have found a solution that will suit all.
iPod - all your music from albums, tapes, 8 trax, and CD, on one convenient handheld accessory. Mine currently holds approximately 4,900 songs. Every CD I have ever purchased and "borrowed" is on there. My better half was amazed at how empty my den looked with no more CD cabinets or bookshelves lined with discs.
:topic:
My better half also uses an iPod Shuffle for the gym. I download songs onto it, she goes to the gym and hits play. She never knows what she is going to get. It is kind of corny but fun, plus it never plays the same order twice.
This is an unpaid advertisement for Apple and the iPod.

Jim Webb 9th June 2005, 05:31 PM I would grab Dark Side of the Moon, but if I missed it and ended up with Santana's Abraxas I would not feel cheated.
Laura M 9th June 2005, 10:55 PM We could practically eliminate the 'let's do age' thread with this one!
Other than the sentimental "Partridge Family" lps (How much respect did I just lose....but just try getting "I think I love you...so what am I so afraid of" out of your head for the next few minutes)
I think it would have to be one of Bruce's - maybe Nebraska.
Mike Smith 10th June 2005, 09:13 AM I remember when Van Halen came out with their first album. It was like something I had never heard. It was the only thing I played for a long time
Boston's first album runs a close second
RosieA 10th June 2005, 10:14 AM Other than the sentimental "Partridge Family" lps (How much respect did I just lose....but just try getting "I think I love you...so what am I so afraid of" out of your head for the next few minutes)
EEK! :mg: Thanks a lot Laura! I can't get "I think I love you" out of my head now!
True audiophiles still prefer vinyl over everything else. I have a friend who has his turntable mounted on a slab of granite (just like a surface plate!) that is attached to a pipe that goes into the bedrock below his house, so house vibrations don't affect his records. (wouldn't work in earthquake prone areas)
My oldest son has already put dibbies on our B&O turntable and record collection when we die. I'm gratified to have raised such a discriminating child. :D
Bill Ryan 10th June 2005, 02:12 PM REO Speedwagon - Live (might their first greatest hits album - I'll have to look tonight)
ralphsulser 10th June 2005, 02:29 PM Sil Austin-Ruby
Anyone remember this one? I was single then and had a great apartment with a good stereo system, and bamboo curtains, and waterfall, and indirect lighting of pastel blues, greens and reds. With big cushions on the floor,
whoa..better stop now
David Hartman 10th June 2005, 03:16 PM Jimi Hendrix - Smash Hits, a stereo system with about 5,000 jigawats, a pair of humongous speaker columns (only 2 for REAL stereo - none of this surround sound crap), a black light, several psychedelic black-light posters, a bottle of wine (cheap of course) and my lovely wife in her paisley muumuu, platform shoes, long hair (held back with beads and flowers) - and life would be good once again.
;)
Mike Smith 14th June 2005, 09:31 AM Did anybody watch Paul McCartney in Red Square last night? I was just thinking, if this thread was titled "What band had the biggest effect on people or had the most influence on world events"? I was trying to think of some logical answer besides The Beatles. I could not.
Giselle 24th June 2005, 03:51 PM The one and only Grand Funk Railroad Live, Humming MEEEAN Mistreater ......
mattrecruiter 24th June 2005, 04:27 PM I would save my original pressing London Calling album (pretty impressive as I was two when it was released).
I would still have to save a couple of my Rolling Stones/Social Distortion albums and sacrifice the cat. I hate that stupid thing anyway.
JRKH 19th August 2005, 03:18 PM Yes....Dark Side of the Moon :ko:
My Vote Also
tazng00se 13th December 2005, 02:50 PM REO Speedwagon - A Decade Of Rock & Roll 1970-80 - seen them twice in concert and had forgotten them on my top 10 list.
pilchard 13th December 2005, 04:24 PM Pat Metheny - Last Train Home:o
bmccabe 13th December 2005, 04:33 PM Blues for me.
I'm snag'n the Robert Johnson box set.
Baldrick 14th December 2005, 04:42 AM Born To Run by Bruce Springsteen.
If there are any Bruce fans out there, I can thoroughly recommend the recent BTR 30th Anniversary Reissue Box Set, complete with remastered CD, live DVD from London 1975 and 90-minute DVD documentary. Very nicely packaged too (just in time for Christmas).
tyker 14th December 2005, 07:05 AM Joni Mitchell - For the roses
Maybe not rock and roll but intelligent, thoughtful, brilliantly performed and hauntingly good tunes.
Bogie 14th December 2005, 07:13 AM Elton John - Goodby Yellow Brick Road
AndyN 14th December 2005, 07:27 PM Genesis - probably one of the live ones with an 'oldies medley' y'know: - 'The Lamb, Squonk, Dance on a Volcano, etc. etc. ad inf. they're mostly on 'Three Sides Live' or 'Seconds Out'. Tough call, it could have been any of of the previously posted selections, or maybe some ELP, or Yes, or even right up to date 'Coheed and Cambria' or Linkin Park - Meteora or Hybrid Theory.........:jawdrop:
Andy
BadgerMan 15th December 2005, 09:49 AM The album title that best describes my state of mind is the one I would grab.............that being "Toys in the Attic".
Second choice? LZ's Presence.
Barahir 15th December 2005, 12:11 PM I'd just grab my 300 GB external drive that houses my entire music and audio book collection.
But if I had to grab one album, it would probably be my vinyl copy of Metallica's "Garage Days." I've already had to replace it once about 10 years ago and it was near impossible then. I can't imagine how hard it would be now.
ddunn 15th December 2005, 12:17 PM My vinyl copy of Ogdens Nut Gone Flake by the Small Faces.
wweng7 15th December 2005, 12:27 PM Why not to save album with a best song ever written (according to Paul Mc Carthy): "Whiter shade of pale" by Procol Harum. By the way it was 26 weeks concecutively #1 on Billboard in 1967.
Paul Simpson 16th December 2005, 08:23 AM Born To Run by Bruce Springsteen.

I suppose compilations don't count. If they do then Tracks would do it for me. If it's an original then The Rising - I know it's recent but it's great.
Graeme 16th December 2005, 09:10 AM If it's only one, then I guess it would have to be Alice's Restaurant (the long version) mostly because it took me abvout 20 years to find a copy.
Other rock albums in contention (top 5) would be
best of Santana
Inna-gadda-da-vida - Iron Butterfly
best of Chicago (early years)
Paul McCartney & Wings
Beatles "1"If it's expanded to other genres (pop, classical, etc.) then the choices would be much more difficult ... I might be like YankInOz and be found in the middle of a puddle of melted vinyl and CD plastic. [Carpenters ... Gordon Lightfoot ... PP&M ... Glenn Yarbrough ... Beethoven boxed set ... Dvorak symphony #8 recorded by the Cleveland Symphony ... Captain & Tenille ...
I like IEGeek's Ipod idea ... I'll look into that, or something similar for my PC.
And LauraM has caused Partidge Famliy tunes to start rattling about inside my head just when I have to get back to work! :mg:
