View Full Version : Songs Used in Advertising That Are Just Plain Wrong!!
IEGeek 9th June 2005, 11:45 AM NPR did a nice piece on songs that are used inappropriately for marketing products.
#1 = Janis Joplin - Mercedes Benz for (of course) Mercedes Benz
Here is Janis singing about capitalism and money being evil and they are using it to hawk luxury autos
#2 = Creedance Clearwater Revival - Fortunate Son for Wrangler Jeans
CCR singing about waving the red, white and blue then fade out. Next line is "when they sing 'Hail to the Chief' they should point the cannon at you"
#3 = Iggy Pop - Here Come Johnny for Norweigan Cruise Lines
Are we to assume that illegal drugs and booze are accepted on NCL cruises?
What are your favorite misses?
JerryStem 9th June 2005, 04:16 PM I'm not sure about inappropriate, but some others are just plain wrong:
Led Zepplin for Cadillac??
The Ramones for Cingular Wireless
Jerry
I'm sure I'll think of others soon....
Rachel 9th June 2005, 04:23 PM Etta James's "At Last" is currently being used to hock cat food.
Engaged couples all over the world are frantically trying to pick another first-dance song before it's too late.
Randy Stewart 9th June 2005, 04:34 PM Jerry,
I think it is very inappropriate. I never associated LZ with Cadillac - still can't.
I cracked up the first time I heard Lust for Life and saw that commercial. How does it go? Somewhere around the climbing wall you realize this isn't an ordinary cruise? I think seeing Iggy Pop in the lounge would scream at me that this isn't an ordinary cruise!!!!:rar:

Actually, considering the current plight of GM, maybe they should consider either of the following:
Nobody loves you when you're down and out.
Brother can you spare a dime.

Oh, I don't know, Randy. "Been a long time since I rock and rolled..."
Gee, I can't even remember the last time I rock and rolled. "Hey, honey, did we ever rock and roll?"
:lmao:
RosieA 9th June 2005, 05:57 PM I hate that Caddie commercial. All those cars are doing a lovely little ballet and the Cadillac comes barging in, breaking it all up and being a bully. And the fact that they've associated a LZ song with it is downright rude.
Not that I'd EVER buy a Cadillac anyway. It's a Geezer car. (I probably just offended a hundred Covers...sorry!) :D

That LZ Caddie commercial reminds me of that "Boys of Summer" song. You know, I'm showing my youth here, but I never really 'got' that part of the song until some wannabe punk band redid it with a Black Flag sticker.
Cari Spears 10th June 2005, 08:34 AM Every single Old Navy commercial ever made!! :yuk:

What was that old song (i was very young, but it was popular with my parents generation...)
Trailer for sale or rent
Rooms to let for 50 cent
No pool, no (something), no pets
Ain't got no cigarettes.
I can't even remember who sang it, but it was a real cry in your beer kinda song. And for all the youngsters, when it says rooms to let for 50 cent, that didn't mean there was a vacancy for a rapper!:lmao:

"No phone, no pool, no pets..."
Roger Miller, "King of the Road." (http://www.univie.ac.at/Anglistik/easyrider/data/KingotRoad.htm)
Also remembered for "You Can't Roller Skate in a Buffalo Herd."

Dean martin also does a wonderful rendition of that song.
Cari Spears 10th June 2005, 10:24 AM Great, you guys - now the song is cycling through my head.
I'm a man of means, by no means.....
D.Scott 10th June 2005, 11:01 AM Don't forget the imortal classic "Does Your Chewing Gum Lose Its Flavor on the Bedpost Overnight"
Or maybe you prefered "May the Bird of Paridise Fly Up Your Nose"
Dave
nomisd 10th June 2005, 11:17 AM Don't necessarily think this one was wrong but it was certainly an interesting choice of song - Venus in Furs by the Velvet Underground to advertise Goodyear tyres about ten years ago in the UK. Why anybody would think of using a song about sado-machoism to advertise tyres is a bit beyond me but I was good to hear it on the TV
Joe Cruse 12th June 2005, 09:58 PM I'm with y'all, I can't STAND seeing the Cadillac commercials! They (GM and ad execs) are killing my love for Zep, one 30 second bit at a time. Next, they'll be using "Red Barchetta" for the 'Vette    .
This is just me, but the trend to use popular songs (a long standing one, I know, but it seems to have worsened in the last few years) for commercials makes me want to do anything BUT buy that product that they prostitute the tune for.
little__cee 17th June 2005, 03:22 PM I really DO like the Dave Matthews song being used in the Citi commercial - seems to fit and plus I like the song anyways so good for them for not ruining a good song with a rotten commercial.
mshell 17th June 2005, 03:53 PM Jamie's Mom - Dr. Pepper (even my 15 year old made a remark about how innappropriate the commercial is)
Randy Stewart 20th June 2005, 09:20 AM Watching part of the US Open yesterday some investment company had Dream On playing. I was wondering if that was to say dream and we'll help them come true or was it implying to keep dreaming and send us your money!
Another commercial is for some kind of dust spray or something, I think it's call a swiffer. Anyway they use Devos' Whip It and have some lady running around the house dusting everything. All she needed was a flower pot on her head.
