View Full Version : Gage Calibration - Using a CMM and Gage Blocks for In-House Calibration

I am employed by a small manufacturing company, approx. 20 employees, and we are pushing to become ISO 9001-2000 certified. Among the services we provide are, welding, machining, painting, and heat treating. Some of our customers have government contracts, so this certification has become a must. We have hired an ISO consultant, but I feel there is much knowledge to be found on this forum.

Among my many tasks, is the calibration of gages. I have many years experience in a machine shop setting, and I have the knowledge to verify calibration, also to calibrate items such as micrometers and calipers. For the sake of cost saving, we want to calibrate as many tools as possible in house. Our primary tools will be a small manual CMM and an 81 piece, grade 2, rectangular block set. The set will have calibration certification to NIST standards. The ISO standard says that I must be certified to do this calibration; how do I go about obtaining this certification? Thank you in advance.

I hope your consultant didn't tell you that you need to be certified. The requirement is that outside calibration suppliers must be accredited. There is no requirement for your own personal certification. Of course, training and qualifications must be documented, and must make sense, but you don't have to have any sort of personal certification.
