View Full Version : Morgan Spurlock - 30 Days

So I watched an absolutely entrancing program on Wednesday night. (I was at a seminar for the State of CA yesterday, hence the reason for the late posting.)

Morgan Spurlock has a show on F/X called "30 Days". Morgan is the guy who ate nothing but fast food for 30 days and showed how he gained weight, how his health condition changed, etc. The movie well to be frank - sucked - however--

Here is the shows premise -
"30 Days" takes people from from different backgrounds and thrusts them into a situation that is against everything they are and stand for or would never experience on their own. They have to ingratiate themselves into this life for a full 30 days (hence the name of the show) They have taken a conservative All-American boy and had him live as a muslim for 30 days etc. You get the idea.

Well Wednesday's show was very enlightening.

They took a guy from the heart of the Midwest (Oxford, MI) a good ole' farm boy with strong religious convictions and a deep sense of moral character and plopped him down in the middle of the Castro district of San Francisco. For those that do not know - The Castro District is the heart of homosexuality in America. Rainbow flags fly everywhere, Gay Pride parades are held here, there are 3 council members that are homosexual, men and women walk the streets hand in hand, Gay Churches abound, you get the idea. Well this boy from MI was definitely out of his element. He moved in with a Freelance Marketing Consultant that was openly gay. Ten minutes off the plane he was sipping champagne with his new roommate - Hilarious- He took a job in a Wine and Cheese shop with a strictly 100% homosexual clientele. He attended a Real Gay Church - not the slang for Gay Church - etc. ( I had no idea that going to the gym was called "going to gay church"?!?!?!?!)

For a MI boy with lots of preconceived notions he made an amazing discovery - homosexuals are people too, just like me and you. SHOCKING. Sure they are different in their tastes and desires but they have normal jobs, they play softball (that part was hilarious) they go to church, they go soirees, they have families that love them. They may drink chardonnay with a pinkie upright and be a little too neat for their own good, but all in all it was eye-opening. Although not eye- opening enough for me to switch teams

I highly recommend this show to you all for a new experience.

Sounds great - sounds like a show I'd like to recommend to many people I know...("what do you mean, *they* are just like *us*?!?!") ::snort::

What is this F/X channel of which you speak? Is it strictly a south-of-the-border phenomenon?

It is the most provacative channel on the regular cable guide lineup. I think they must have a budget line item just for FCC fines

Not just softball...they play hardball too :-)

(And football, and lacrosse, and hockey, and tennis, and MMA, and...ad naseum).

One of the things that suprises me the most is the the suprise that people express when they find out 'gays are just like US!'.

Of COURSE they are....they're people too. No better, no worse, and (if you admit the truth) not all that much different. They just have the balls (or the ovaries) to come out and express their differences.

(Sorry, that's a particularly favorite soapbox of mine)

I caught part of the muslim/christian show, and meant to watch the gay Michigan guy show...

I'm not much on Reality Shows (go out of my way to miss them) but this premise sounded interesting. The gay one would have been fun. Going from 6 years in the Navy (homophobic central) to my wife working at a shop that catered very well to gays/drag queens/etc... was an eye opener.

Now I have many gay friends, and some I at least suspect.

And living in red-neck hicksville KY now....... :tg:
