View Full Version : Calibration of instruments if calibration is not in the scope of accreditation.

Hi ,

i hope that every buddy will be doing well on this forum. Seeing the utility of the website, i would like to ask some questions from the calibration point of view. the queries are mentioned below:

" if a material testing lab. is accredited for iso-17025, is it essential for the lab. to made calibration procedures of the machines on which the tests ( like Vickers Hardness, Tensile Testing, Chemical Analysis of low alloy steel etc.) under scope of iso-17025 are being performed.

Plus, can we calibrate the testing machines / glassware instruments of other interested parties that wants to get their instruments calibrated from the testing laboratory , once if we made the calibration procedures. "

Looking forward for the response.

Even if calibration isn't in the scope of accreditation you can still calibrate your own equipment assuming that qualified individuals do the calibrating and traceable standards are used. This assumes that you do have an internal laboratory scope document in accordance with whatever standards you might be registered to, and that it does address calibration.

Plus, can we calibrate the testing machines / glassware instruments of other interested parties that wants to get their instruments calibrated from the testing laboratory , once if we made the calibration procedures.
Not if those outside parties are expecting the calibration to be done by a lab accredited to 17025, because your 17025 scope doesn't include calibration. You can still do the calibrations; you just can't claim to be accredited to do them.

The ISO/IEC Standard 17025 does allow internal calibrations.....and the requirements as stated in the Standard follow:

You must have documented and VALIDATED procedures, or you must validate the procedures.....

The personnel must be trained and SPECIFICALLY authorized, by name and date, to perform the calibration....

The calibration standards must be traceably calibrated, to include the SPECIFIC information on the traceability to National or international standards, and therefore to SI.....

and the measurement uncertainty must be calculated for each calibration performed internally.

Hope this helps.

Thanx a lot for your replies.i got the answer to what i was looking for mine first question. but i am still confused about the second one. i asked

"can we calibrate the testing machines / glassware instruments of other interested parties that wants to get their instruments calibrated from the testing laboratory , once if we made the calibration procedures?"

JSW05 u replied :Not if those outside parties are expecting the calibration to be done by a lab accredited to 17025, because your 17025 scope doesn't include calibration. You can still do the calibrations; you just can't claim to be accredited to do them.

a lil confusing for me, jsw05 can u please elaborate it a lil more .

plus if we would be able to issue them the calibration certificates or not once if our procedures are documented and validated.

looking forward

If I wanted to, I could open a business called Jim's Non-Accredited Calibration Service, and I could do calibrations for everyone who doesn't care whether or not the source is accredited. Of course, I would be more lonely than the Maytag repairman, because everyone who outsources calibration does so on the basis of the source's accreditation. You can calibrate whatever you want to calibrate, but you can't claim that you're accredited to do it. You can also issue calibration certificates, but again, you can't claim to be 17025-accredited, because calibration is not a part of your accredited scope.
