View Full Version : Closed or Resolved: Since Last Visit view and Subscribed Threads in the UserCP - Changes
Sidney Vianna 4th October 2005, 11:07 PM I am still having problems. I used to have the most recent posts listed. They do not show anymore. Also, some subscribed threads with recent posts do not appear when I open the User CP page. Even some recent posts do not show when I click on the "since last visit" link. Since the sw upgrade, I am having problems navigating the Cove.

There is a new setting with a potential of 3 different settings:
Thread/Forum Read Marking Type
(This option controls how threads and forums are marked as read.)
Inactivity/Cookie Based
Database (no automatic forum marking)
Database (automatic forum marking)
From the Help File:This option controls how threads and forums are marked as read.
1. Inactivity/Cookie Based - once a user has been inactive for a certain amount of time (the value of the cookie timeout option) all threads and forums are considered read. Individual threads are marked as read within a session via cookies.
This option is how all versions of vBulletin before 3.5 functioned.
2. Database (no automatic forum marking) - this option uses the database to store thread and forum read times. This allows accurate read markers to be kept indefinitely. However, in order for a forum to be marked read when all threads are read, the user must view the list of threads for that forum.
This option is more space and processor intensive than inactivity-based marking.
3. Database (automatic forum marking) - this option is the same as a previous option, but forums are automatically marked as read when the last new thread is read.
This is the most usable option for end users, but most processor intensive.
I have the third option selected.
Are you having trouble NAVIGATING the forums, or are you having trouble figuring out which threads you have read and which you haven't read?
The most recent posts are not showing? Which 'Menu' item are you using?
Need more specific details.
NOTE: In your UserCP only Subscribed Threads are listed. This works fine for me.
SteelMaiden 5th October 2005, 09:09 AM When I look at "since last visit" threads, the ones I looked at never clear. So each time the list gets longer. up to 10+ pages now. thanks!

Mine clear! It must have something to do with cookies. Do you clear your cookies before returning to the Cove?
Wes Bucey 5th October 2005, 09:21 AM I also noticed a new feature in "since last visit" - it includes unread posts from BEFORE my last visit. Could this be the situation? See the text circled in red.
Marc 5th October 2005, 10:26 AM Yes - The way posts are marked as read has changed. Better said there are now 3 options. I posted them in another thread, but on of the keys is a cutoff time in days.
It used to be that unread posts/threads were 'cleared' after a visit timed out.
These are the new options:

I just changed the "Database Read Marking Limit" from 10 days to 1 day. Let's see what happens
Marc 5th October 2005, 10:29 AM Sidney - Has this been sorted out or is it still an issue?

Database (automatic forum marking) Marc, where do I go to select these settings? I could not find this in the edit options page from the User CP link.
Marc 5th October 2005, 10:57 AM These are administrator settings which you cannot see, so we'll have to come to a consensus as to preferred settings.
I apologise for the 'Who Moved My Cheese' issues like this. This is a major upgrade and many of the changes are new to me as well.
However - as I read through this there is the aspect of 'subscribed' threads appearing in the UserCP which you were (are?) concerned about. Subscribed threads which are newly updated show in my UserCP. Subscribed threads which haven't been recently updated do not show but there is a link to them.
Howard Atkins 5th October 2005, 01:15 PM I am in favour of the extra category, which enable me to take a quick look on some visits but to come back for more leisurely study and still not to have to search for the threads. It might add a few screens but I think that this is not a real problem. Do people start from the latest and work back or the opposite.
If you work LIFO then there is no problem,. I work FIFO but I have found the end easily enough.
I think that we should keep this function for say at least three days which will allow people to have a quick visit over the weekend or trip and then later read in leisure.
Marc 5th October 2005, 01:48 PM I think the important question now will be what to set the "Database Read Marking Limit" at. The default is 10 days but this AM I reduced it to to 1 day. Maybe it should be set at 7 days (a week). As Wes pointed out, there is a 'line' now where it says "The threads below have not been updated since your last visit but still contain unread posts."
Remember, this is applicable to the "Since Last Visit" view.

I think 7 days is reasonable. Guys with real jobs don't visit every day and they could miss a post to which they have an answer or which provides info they can use.
Marc 5th October 2005, 02:00 PM If I understand this correctly, if someone doesn't stop by for 20 days, "Since Last Visit" will still list 20 days of 'new' messages. The 7 days is how long messages are kept that are NOT new since the last visit but are UnRead.
Marc 5th October 2005, 05:08 PM Also see this link to a discussion of marking threads 'Read':
Mark old unread forums as read (http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=157337)
Also remember, in the Quick Links dropdown there is the 'Mark Forums Read' link.

Each forum also has a 'Quick Links bar for the forum its self.

I agree, not with Guys with real jobs don't visit every day but the rest

Why, thank you Wes. I come by almost every work day. I guess that says more about me and my job than I imagined :whip:
