(No promises... ) Sambasi 4th January 2006, 09:12 AM Congratulations on celebrating 10 years online ! This site is informative, educative and as well entertaining(fourms like coffee break). I wish many happy returns! Craig H. 4th January 2006, 09:23 AM Suggestions for Improvement - January 2006 What would YOU like to see? (No promises... ) 10 Years? Wow, look what has developed! Amazing. What I would like to see is for the ASQ to recognize that participation in the Cove is a practical way to "keep current" and counts as recertification points for the CQ* certificates. I'm not holding my breath. Congratulations on a decade old successful site! kat 4th January 2006, 09:29 AM :agree1: I want to thank everyone that posts here -- I have used this site as a resource for a lot of different aspects of my job. especially the QS and now TS portions -- but other parts as well jinzhoujun 4th January 2006, 10:03 AM Congratulations on celebrating 10 years ! I have been this site for four years, it is helpful to me. Rooch 4th January 2006, 10:03 AM Mark I think there are many great things about goes on here. The ideas and differences of opinion are what make it what it is. Most of the time there is no one answer to a question. To everyone out there- Thank you. The one comment I have on improvement....I would like to see sub-catergories within a thread. What I mean is under ISO 9001 - Quality Management Systems, I would like to see sub-threads of the standard, like 1 Scope 2 Normative reference 3 Terms and definitions 4 Quality management system 5 Management responsibility 6 Resource management 7 Product realization 8 Measurement, analysis and improvement Then also a few general sub-threads like "General topics" "MISC" or "Documentation" . I dont know if this makes sence to anyone else but me. There are soooo many threads that to me, even an advanced search misses a lot- in my opinion. Thanks again to everyone Have a great day! rooch Dbloom 4th January 2006, 10:53 AM Congratulations on 10 years online. A decade of quality minded individuals and resource sharing making our worlds better one improvement at a time. I am a quality manager in the telecommunications sector. I would like to see more information and informative resources on getting the most out of TL9000. I am particularly interested in how to get the most out of the TL9000 measurements that are required by the standard. I would like to know what other telecommunications companies are doing and how they are effectively using these measurements. :thanx: Jim Wynne 4th January 2006, 10:58 AM One thing you can do in that regard is to make your own colleagues acquaintances in TC aware of the Cove and its resources; the more folks we have from any given discipline, the more likely you'll see the types of information and discussion you're interested in, and the more the rest of us will be able to learn about it. Spread the word! S. Thompson 4th January 2006, 11:00 AM Congrats on the Cove's 10th Birthday!:hbday: I cannot beleive the amount of information contained here. Thanks to everyone for their help and advice. Does anyone out there work in the document scanning business? Nice to know if someone works in the same industry. Once again:thanx: chenjerry 4th January 2006, 11:53 AM As a registered visitor, I'd like to come here for information and consulting. I hope we can exchange the ideas we get more and more in 2006! Congratulations! walking eagle 4th January 2006, 01:01 PM Congrats on the tenth!! I can't say enough about the quality and level of expertise available on this site. I spend hours just lurking and learning, learning and lurking. Thanks so much to everyone you've been a valuable asset for me and others I'm sure. Thank you, Carl :bigwave: gszekely 4th January 2006, 01:08 PM Hello Marc ! Congratulations, to you and forum members, or visitors. I'm browsing the internet since 2000, but I found the site only at the end of 2005. I am on the net for 6-8 hours a day, and I found intresting, that this link is not posted, on other forums. I think, that those (some), who knows about it, try to keep it for themselves. As we all know, information is power. It's nice to see, that being a good QA professional, you apply the CI, for the site as well. Let's hope that after a while i can contribute as well, with some ideas. I wish you all the best for the next 10! Wayne Graeme 5th January 2006, 09:36 AM Marc, I'd like to add my congratulations on having the forums online for 10 years - a very significant achievment in the rough world of the Internet, and an extremely valuable resource for everyone in the wide array of fields included in the quality professions! Best wishes for another 10^2 years! It's outside your sphere of influence, but I like the idea from Craig H about participation here qualifying for ASQ recertification units. Maybe it should be linked to a factor such as (number of posts over the recert period) x (rep power)? Is there a vbcode command for setting a character to superscript or subscript? A lot of people are not familiar with E or ^ formats for exponents, so it would make some math explanations easier for them to understand. I don't know about the code, but as a workaround you can format text in Word and paste it into responses here: 123 Marc 5th January 2006, 09:50 AM It's outside your sphere of influence, but I like the idea from Craig H about participation here qualifying for ASQ recertification units. Maybe it should be linked to a factor such as (number of posts over the recert period) x (rep power)? It has been discussed, but no one has come up with a formula or concept that the ASQ would accept. A lot of people are not familiar with E or ^ formats for exponents, so it would make some math explanations easier for them to understand. I'll check into special vB codes for super- and sub- script. NOTE: JSW05's method worked because in this forum I had 'allow html' turned on because of legacy posts. I turned it off because typically allowing html parsing is a bad idea. Back 5 or more years ago it was less of an issue but today it poses a 'hole' for potential scripting hacks. Here are the vB codes: SuperScript - Use 'sup' within [] brackets (no ') SubScript - Use 'sub' within [] brackets (no ') For all vbcodes, see vbcodes listing (http://elsmar.com/Forums/misc.php?do=bbcode) Bobh@pte 5th January 2006, 10:13 AM Marc, Is there anyway I can get some credits for what I have learned off of this site? Just kidding, but thanks for providing this forum. Your site and the materials (ISO) that I have purchased from you in the past have enabled me to implement systems in three different companies since 2001. Thanks!!! Grizz1345 5th January 2006, 07:33 PM :) Happy New Year to you Marc. I just want to say thanks for of your hard work. It has provided me with a wealth off information in setting up my in-house cal lab. It has also provided me with the opportunity to laugh at myself in the coffee chatter room. I added them yesterday as requested. HFowler 7th January 2006, 11:01 AM Marc, Congratulations on the 10yr anniversary. I have been away from the forum for a while doing some other job functions, but I have always benefited from the advise and assistance of the sincere and caring members. I'm now into a position that requires me to focus on AS9100 requirements, First Article Inspection as it relates to aerospace and implementing a Change Control Procedure to replace (4) other separate systems. So anything on AS9100 compliance will be beneficial to me. Hank Fowler Jim Wynne 7th January 2006, 12:16 PM Marc, Congratulations on the 10yr anniversary. There's an AS9100 forum here: AS9100 and related Aerospace Standards (http://elsmar.com/Forums/forumdisplay.php?f=95) and there are several Covers who do a great job covering the aerospace questions. I suggest that has option in its home page of simultaneous translation of its goods for another languages. Happiness and success! Metatron Brazil robbiev 13th January 2006, 09:56 PM Dear Marc & Cove, Just found out I missed an important birthday. Thanks for more than 3 years of fantastic support (passive, hmm) and 10 yrs. of making The Cove the great home for QS that it is. Though I'm now in bus.analysis ("we know what we're doing , just give us the figures to back it up"), every once in a while I check back. And do I wish I had this kind of supportive environment to call on when everyone else thinks I'm being difficult for the sake of it. As for what I'd like to see ... well I can still find enough cases on prof.ethics vs. dealing with fifo/jit-managers, so as a non-ISO I'm still very happy. Thanks, congrats, and hats off to the Wiz and all here. Robert Wes Bucey 13th January 2006, 10:59 PM What I find MOST AWESOME is that Marc still manages to keep from getting stale and, true to the Quality Credo, continually improves something that is already better than anything similar on the internet! I'm proud to be a small part of a great thing. gard2372 13th January 2006, 11:25 PM What I find MOST AWESOME is that Marc still manages to keep from getting stale and, true to the Quality Credo, continually improves something that is already better than anything similar on the internet! I'm proud to be a small part of a great thing. 10 years and still going strong. I aim to be here to see the next 10. I agree Wes, after stubling upon this site after getting lost in the ASQ forums (no offense ASQ) I have learned more about quality and ahve been able to apply lessons learned. :applause: harry 15th January 2006, 11:35 AM It is said that any business that survives the first ten years will be around for the next fifty or even hundred. I am sure the cove will be the same. Congratulations Marc for holding through the most difficult ten years. With regards to suggestions for year 2006, I have another view. While you carry on with your continuous or is it continual improvement, we the users (both registered and unregistered) who had benefited so much should do something in return - by way of more active participation. I think Pareto's principles applies - I guess about 80% of the registered users seldom participate. For a start, lets say everybody try to participate in at least two discussion per month and make three contributions on any other topics per year, that would greatly increase the traffic and generate more ideas. For the unregistered users, why not drop by and say hello and perhaps get yourself registered. This is an international forum rich in contents - years down the road, I am sure membership here would 'have its privileges' - at least in reputation. That man had been toiling for the last ten years to build up the cove. Why not all of us work together to make things happen for him? Sidney Vianna 15th January 2006, 01:23 PM What I find MOST AWESOME is that Marc still manages to keep from getting stale and, true to the Quality Credo, continually improves something that is already better than anything similar on the internet! I'm proud to be a small part of a great thing. Ditto. Unless there are royalties to be paid. :agree1: The one thing I would like to see the Cove trying is new technological avenues for communication such as audio conferences using Skype and Google Talk. As well as videos through Google Videos. We can harness a lot of the expertise here and make it available commercially. Also, I would like to see a Cover's gathering of sorts....something such as a Covers Convention.... Cheers. Dr. L. Ramakrishnan 15th January 2006, 09:14 PM Dear Marc, Kindly accept my congratulations and best wishes, even though I am a little late. One great characteristic of this forum is that it is "addictive"; even during travel & busy schedule, one is "forced" to visit the forum - the quality of discussions is quite good and "attractive". I am writing this from the Singapore Airport, on the way to Hong Kong. In the 30 minutes available to me at the Singapore airport I did open the forum to see what is happening. My compliments to you Marc for this excellent opportunity provided by you to many people like me to interact and learn. I wish you and the forum members many more successful years ahead together. With warm regards, Ramakrishnan Gangona 16th January 2006, 03:27 AM It's clear that i missed out the celebration of the 10th birthday :( , but all i can say thank you Mark and all the helpfull guys on this forum for all the effort that u r doing for helping people and not ever keeping an information. I learned a lot from this forum.. and i hope it will continue like this for ever :applause: :hbday: Marc 26th January 2006, 04:36 PM The one thing I would like to see the Cove trying is new technological avenues for communication such as audio conferences using Skype and Google Talk. As well as videos through Google Videos. We can harness a lot of the expertise here and make it available commercially. Skype has been integrated in the forum software in that a user can enter their Skype name so others can call the user. Google talk is new so I'm not sure when (or if) that will be integrated. As to videos, they take a *lot* of bandwidth. So far I have a lot of extra bandwidth, but video could change that part of the formula. Not to mention file size. Videos can eat up server space. I did link to one I uploaded to the server about a day ago. It was a brief segment of The Daily Show where they joked about the Ford situation. I'm not sure how videos will play into all this at this point. Your ideas are welcome. Also, I would like to see a Cover's gathering of sorts....something such as a Covers Convention.... Well, I know that currently there are a number of travelling Covers who meet up with some others who 'hang out' here. But a Cover's convention would be hard to pull off because of the world-wide distribution of the 'regulars'. If we did do, I'd propose it be in Geneva, Switzerland. Sidney Vianna 26th January 2006, 04:59 PM As to videos, they take a *lot* of bandwidth. Marc, with Google Video, the files are stored on their servers. I have been using Google Video for a while and, with a broadband connection, no user should have a problem. You can place a video for free or you can use their video store to allow people to "buy" access. We have a lot of collective knowledge in the Cove. Some professionally produced videos, explaining, for example, how to audit, how to implement a management system, a panel discussion on corrective action vs. preventive action, etc.. could bring you some additional revenue$. Marc 26th January 2006, 05:28 PM I haven't played with Google Video yet. I did play with the idea of training videos and such back in the 1990's. I even bought a Mac AV 8500 but the bottom line was to do videos you were looking at a (for me) significant investment. Now, I'm not saying it is like it was even 6 years or so ago. Back then when I figured it all out, it was about US$20K to buy TV quality, full frame video equipment. Of course, then there was the stage, props, etc., etc. You know, Perry Johnson put out a LOT of 'teaser' videos (several of which I still have on VHS tape). It's true that as I sit here today I can do full frame, TV quality recording and writeoff to DVD with my iMac. And if I wanted to invest in a camera and a dual processor Mac tower I could do the same in High Definition (HDTV) format. I keep coming back to the aspect of doing a production, which is a bit beyond my expertise. If some people want to get together and do something like this, I'd be happy to play a part. Suggest away. RosieA 26th January 2006, 06:16 PM Marc, thank you so much for perservering through a lot of "stuff" and providing this wonderful learning, and sharing resource. The advice and support I've gotten from Covers is invaluable. My only comment (and maybe I missed its addition) but I'd love to see spell check. Consider this a cyber kiss on the cheek! XXXX Rosie Marc 26th January 2006, 06:28 PM There is a spell check 'hack', but I've watched it for quite a while and it seems to work on some boards and causes trouble on others. Part of this is the nature of the editing modes. For example, when you use the WYSIWYG interface there is a lot of formatting code being put in that the user cannot see. As you might imagine, these codes make spell checking difficult. It's a possibility in the future if I see the hack stabilize but right now I don't want to introduce a problem. I don't have it installed right now, but Firefox has a dandy spell checker 'extension' (or whatever they're calling the things). Have you considered that or are you entrenched with IE? RosieA 26th January 2006, 06:34 PM We use Firefox at home, but IE at work, where I often post from. It's ok, I'll continue to drag out my good ole Franklin Spell Checker or my Funk and Wagnalls when I suspect I've erred! Sidney Vianna 26th January 2006, 06:38 PM I've downloaded and installed the Google Toolbar. It has a spell check feature on top of many others. It is GREAT. Simple, elegant, functional. I highly recommend. And it takes no more than 20 seconds to install. RosieA 26th January 2006, 06:40 PM Installed it where, Sidney? Sidney Vianna 26th January 2006, 06:44 PM http://toolbar.google.com/?promo=mor-tb-en Once installed, it becomes a "bar" under the url address line. See the image on the page available through the link above. Please note that you have options to choose from, once you intall the product. But is very simple. Marc 26th January 2006, 11:34 PM The Spell Check 'hack' is described in this thread: vB Spell --> Spell Checker in WYSIWYG and Standard Modes (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=92202). Personally, I'd bet on the toolbar solution for now. I'm just afraid this 'hack' isn't 'stable' yet, so I'm sorta afraid to install it... Call me chicken right now. Also - Please understand that for every 'hack' I install, when there is a vBulletin upgrade I have a number of changes I have to make to different files and templates. So - The more 'hacks', the longer it takes me to prep for the upgrade and the more potential for what did work not to work because of changes to the base vBulletin code. RosieA 30th January 2006, 12:17 PM I checked with our IT guys before I downloaded it and got this reply: "The problem with the google toolbar is that it has its own popup blocker built in and that causes problem with some of our internal sites, like Oracle." So thanks for the good idea, Sidney, but I guess I'll just take my chances with misspelled words for now. It'll give me a chance to practice my dictionary skills  Jim Wynne 30th January 2006, 12:26 PM I checked with our IT guys before I downloaded it and got this reply: "The problem with the google toolbar is that it has its own popup blocker built in and that causes problem with some of our internal sites, like Oracle." So thanks for the good idea, Sidney, but I guess I'll just take my chances with misspelled words for now. It'll give me a chance to practice my dictionary skills  The Google popup blocker can be set to allow popups for the sites where popups are necessary (as in the case of some Java applets). My guess is that your IT department doesn't want to be bothered with it (not that I blame them). If you're free to try it anyway, you might give it a go and just disable it for the internal apps that it interferes with. Marc 30th January 2006, 02:13 PM Hang on - This thread is being split to Moderators, Experts and Disinformation in the forums - A discussion (http://elsmar.com/Forums/showthread.php?t=15130) Joe Cruse 2nd February 2006, 11:20 AM I'm running WAYYY late on this, but, congratulations Marc! Here's to many more for this site. I agree fully with Wes' comments on your ability to continually improve this place.
