Hi all my name is David Miedel
I am a restaurant manager who utilizes aspects of lean. You should know however that they were in place before my arrival.

How I got introduced to the whole lean manufacturing was last october on my vacation i was seated next to a gentlemen who is a lean consultant with one of the most well know firms. well needless to say he and i had this wonderful 2 hour conversation on the topic, he bought me lunch at the airport during our layover and we have been in constant communication since. I have no training or degree but he has pressed on me to pursue this career and he told to buy 3 books to help guide me and we have plans for me to shadow him next month and get some hands on experience, even though I am still a restaurant manager. He is very animate about his belief in my aptitude and ability to do this, of which he said he has only met one other person who he thought that could do this without industry experience and or education. The thing is i am truly passionate about the toyota way and lean thinking in general, to the point I cant wait until I am able to utilize it as a career and learn more from others. My question is however what is the likely hood of an individual like myself given what little you know of me that is, to become an intern at a company or as a consultant and continue my search for knowledge and development? Any thoughts or advice will be very much appreciated I assure you all.

Thank you,

David Miedel

A good initiative. My data:

1. Lars Svaneberg Tuxen
2. Corporate Quality Manager (Scandinavian Brake Systems A/S respectively Notox Filters A/S).
3. Automotive Industry
4. Scandinavian Brake Systems A/S located in Denmark.
5. I have been working with Quality at three companies since 1994 (Danfoss A/S, Chr. Hansen A/S, Struers A/S and Scandinavian Brake Systems A/S).
6. Besides the data-focused approach working as B.Sc. in Engineering in Manufacturing and Management I use a lot of my time playing acoustic and electric guitars.
7. The fact that it is very hard to make the organization see quality management system as a way of embedding best practice instead of a bureaucratic obstacle.
8. Implement more divers standards with requirements that "fits" the specific industry and customer segment OE/OEM/AM thereby it would be a lot easier to sell the quality idea to top management as well as the rest of the organization.

My name is Elaina Colby.

I am the Quality Assurance and Regulatory Compliance Manager for my company.

I work in the Medical Device Manufacturing industry however the bulk of my background is in clinical research and protocol development (about 10 years). Prior to that I was a linguist and educator...

I work for a very small company (less than 10 employees) in Glen Burnie, MD (USA)

I've been with this company almost 18 months.

Something personal or that sets me apart? I used to sing opera and I was once a Russian Linguist in the US Army...Is that strange enough?:biglaugh:

My pet peeve in quality is that standards and regulations have trouble just saying like it is. It's see reference y in standard 1.1 section 2 and then you go to that source and it sends you to another place. I've had to learn about QS, QA, ISO, FDA, MPA and other requirements all on my own without a mentor and it has not been easy. I'm grateful to have found this forum actually. Here I've learned the most and received the best guidance.

I don't have any aspirations to change the world in quality. Honestly, I'd like to return to the clinical research side of things and leave the manufacturing up to someone else. Of course, the bad taste I've developed for QA could be directly related to the fact that my company refuses to conform to requirements...In addition, my boss expects me to be the quality inspector, quality control, quality assurance and regulatory compliance which I feel are roles conflicting in interest. For example, I write the SOP, follow or implement it and then run an internal audit confirming I am doing what the SOP (I wrote) says must be done. Not good.:notme:

Enjoy!

New member, well sort of. I was a member of this forum while with a previous employer when we were upgrading to ISO9001:2000.

Now my new employer has asked me to look into ISO14001 so I came back to where I found a great deal of help in the past.

Introduction:

Name: Shane Williams
Title: Quality / Regulatory Manager
Industry: Contract manufacturing
Company: Nathaniel Group, Inc. Vergennes, Vt. Time in Quality: I'm serving a life sentence, almost 30 years now. Although at my last job and in my present position I dabble in the management ofthe dark side (production) as well.
Something personal: I prefer a bit of crisis management every day. Oh, and I have an accounting degree that I'venver used.
Pet peeve with quality: To many people in quality forget why we're in business.
Quality world change: I'd eliminate the quality "group" and install the concepts in all aspects of manufacturing.

Welcome to newbies and returnees alike!:bigwave:

Elaina Colby:
Conflicts of interest are only personal conflicts if you allow yourself to go over to the dark side. The overriding friend of folks facing "apparent" conflicts is assiduous attention to documenting what you do, creating the paper trail which belies any innuendo about the sanctity of your work.

To all:
I'm really looking forward to the time when you will all be old hands greeting other newbies and will have the knowledge, experience, and confidence to give them the same quality advice YOU receive from the old hands who have come before you.

So i'm devouring all the information I can, and trying out simple experiments, but unfortunately, have no one to discuss with, until I chanced upon this forum :)

Interesting process you described, "For example, I write the SOP, follow or implement it and then run an internal audit confirming I am doing what the SOP (I wrote) says must be done" at least you control the whole process although you are right it is not acceptable to audit your own process.

Hi everybody...great forum, lots of info / ideas! My name is Mischele and I have been the Quality Technician - Document Specialist (manage the system docs, internal audit schedule, lead auditor, etc...) for an aerospace manufacturer for 8 years. My biggest pet peeve is when management doesn't seem to care about the system unless they are being subjected to a third party audit. :frust: What I would change if I could (at my company anyway) is the apparent mentality that being certified to AS9100 is a neccessary evil, rather than good business practice. It would be so much simpler if they would just stick to the "shalls" and stop trying to find ways around the system!!!

Hello all! It's good to be connected to people who know what I deal with on a daily basis. I'm not saying that being a quality advocate doesn't have its rewards (when it's good, it's sweet), it's just nice to have somewhere to turn to when I'm feeling alone. It's also great to get your professional perspectives on different approaches to address different issues.:bigwave:

My name is Jon Berry and my current title is Business Excellence Advisor (whatever that is). I've been in this position for about 8 months, working in industrial lubricants (BP/Castrol) out of Naperville (Chicagoland), Illinois. In my previous position, I was a Quality/Environmental System Engineer for over 4 years in a Tier 1 automotive supplier. I've been in quality related positions for about 15 years.

Like many that I've met in quality (oddly), I have a degree in the Biological sciences (Zoology, actually). Something that does set me apart is that I am an avid naturalist (bird/mammal watching, forests, ecology, etc.) and would rather talk a quiet walk on a woodland trail than just about anything.

My pet peeve in quality: the certificate on the wall mentality (by management) in a poorly run business. Also, people settling for conventional approaches because they don't want to expend any time or energy to come up with a good solution for their business.

If I could change the world of quality I'd replace the word quality (in everyone's minds) with the word effectiveness (which would be defined by the customer's expectations and internal organizational needs, of course).

7. Your pet peeve in quality - hypocrisy and lack of integrity
8. If you could change the world of quality, what would you do? - I would stop coming up with new ways to skin the same cat. 8. Drop ISO. Hold people responsible for their actions/product with a gun.

I'm really hoping that you mean that last part - regarding accountability - with sarcasm. Although it does remind me a speech from one of my organization's top dogs who said "The occasional public execution is good for morale."

The idea of accountability and responsibility is an ongoing issue at many organizations. The standards do call for personnel to have both the responsiblity and authority to achieve their goals. Taking it a step further, one should not have the ability to achieve a target but to also be held accountable for the results - both positive and adverse - of actions taken along the way.

Dan, we've had a discussion or two on this very subject in the Cove. Feel free to jump in and contribute! :)

I was looking for the museum for Warner Robbins Ga when I came to this site. I was hoping to get some information. I live in MD. I used to work for 3M Graphics in Westminster Md. We made billboards and Advertisement signs of all different sizes. I worked as an Artist for them. During the time that a request came thru for a sign to be painted for the Areonautical Museum in Warner Robbins GA, The sign was to be placed, If I remember correctly on Route 54 ? It was the SR 71 Black Bird, I am the person that created that sign. It was 10 or 12 ft HIgh and 48 feet long. I was wondering if that sign still exists. We weren't suppose to sign our work but most of us did somewhere inconspicuious, I placed my initials on the wing near the body of the plane. I have a picture of the creation of that sign. I ask to paint it because my son was ( and still is) flight crazy. I was enthrawled with the SR my self, its and awesome creation. I saw one finally in hole at the National Air and Space Museum near Dulles Airport, in Va. It is indeed a sight to behold. And After seeing I think I did it justice in my creation of the sign.
Does anyone know if it still exists.

Does anyone know if it still exists.Welcome to the Cove!:bigwave:Why not write to the Public Relations officer at Robbins AFB and ask? Certainly, the PR staff at the base would be cognizant if a billboard of the plane were still up on one of the roads leading to the base. I don't recall a Rte 54, though. Are you certain of the road?

Hi, My name is Linda M and I am a Supervisor of Quality Systems I have been with my company 25 years I also lead the TS16949 audits.

I guess if I could change anything in the Quality world it really would not begin with Quality it would begin with an overall Data driven, fact finding approach to all aspects of the places in which we all work.
I have enjoyed the time I have spent here so far, and found the site to be very helpful.

Thanks

I am Howard Cooper (CBA CQM, CBA), an independent consultant, who uses my 30 years of Quality and Regulatory Affairs experience in pharmaceuticals and medical devices to help small companies and startups understand, develop, and implement GXP quality systems. The name of my company is EQACT, Inc. which stands for Effective Quality Assurance Consulting and Training.
I strongly believe quality systems are preventative in nature and their implementation result in greater efficiency and compliance. Compliance may outline the basic requirements but quality makes things happen. I believe that people are far more important than technology. Quality systems exist for the sake and benefit of the company and not the FDA. Quality comes from the desire from within to apply a rational and sytemtatic approach to problem solving and contonuous improvement.

For those who have "lurked" for a while before signing up, don't be embarrassed - I lurked for nearly 3 years before I registered nearly five years ago.

The wonderful community of quality folk we have here approximates Andrew Carnegie's "group mind." Carnegie was of the opinion the whole (all of us) is greater than the sum of its parts because of the synergy created when the individuals have a place to bounce their ideas and hear different views.

We're looking forward to YOUR addition to our synergy!

About this there are the next articles:

A brief introduction as requested.

I found this site when I was trying to educate myself on quality, quickly I might add. I have recently become the new Quality Manager for a small manufacturing company. I have zero quality experience, with the exception of being an internal auditor for 3 years for this company. They are more then willing to provide training, but I expect more from myself and want to learn quickly. Of course experience is the best education. Its a great opportunity for me and so I went for it. So thats my story. I may be in and out of your web site in search of information.

I had been looking at corrective preventive threads. Their program may need an overall, the VP of Operations (my boss) has expressed an interest in this. They want to reduce the number of CPD's issued for minor problems.

We are certified to ISO 9001:2000

Been doing some searches on what to expect at my companies _FIRST_ audit ever. We have been in business since the '70's but have never had to go through an audit until now. Our company _used_ to refurbish and sell supercomputers and large computer systems. Now we are starting to focus on new system builds and storage systems integration. One of our customers creates medical devices and we just jumped to a tier 1 supplier, so we have to go through an audit in less than 2 weeks. I have spent the last month creating workflow documents and really hope I am on the right track.

Even though we are not an ISO certified company (yet) we are being audited on certain ISO 9001:2000 procedures.

I am nervous since my area will be the most heavily scrutinized department.

Hi To All,
My name is Janice. I've worked in Quality Assurance for about 17 years as an inspector in the electronics field. I've recently been hired as an inspector at a Flashlight manufacturing plant in Southern Ca.
I've read some interesting stuff on this site and I hope I have some knowlegde I'm able to share with you all, as well as pick up some new stuff myself. What sets me apart from the rest? Well in my current job my experience is what sets me apart from the rest. I come from a plant who produced surveillance camera systems for the government, which required a dilegent QA department with ISO standards, and Quality Assurance principles followed closely. If I could change anything in quality it would have to be attitudes.
Which leads me to why I signed up at this forum. As a new hire in Quality Assurance I've found it very difficult within this company to do the job I was hired for. Any suggestions to my delima would be greatly appreciated.
My biggest problem is that there are no Quality Assurance Instructions in place, and there is a total lack of training being offered to me. There is no accept/reject criteria anywhere within this place and most of what people know is in their heads and not documented. They have a lean process in place which we've been told to audit throughout the day. No inspections are to be done, and inspection should not even be in our vocabulary. Inspection is done by the line personel. I was told recently by my boss that I haven't been producing to his standards, and he admitted it my be due to the lack of training I've had, but needless to say he still documented my lack of work. I've had to go to the different departments and ask my own questions for stuff I need to know, and I just have to hope that I'm given the right information. I'm not one to give up easily, but I'm almost to that point with this company. Has anyone else ever been through this situatiuon before, and if so how did you handle it?

Thanks for any input....Janice:frust:

Director, QA
Pharmaceutical mostly, with some diagnostics/device
Allos Therapeutics, Westminster, Colorado (greater Denver area)
Six years in QA, after nearly 20 years in Operations functions
Have a sole proprietorship for interior decorating and specialty paint finishes
Pet peeve: "lip service" to QS rather than a corporate culture imbued with it

If I could change anything about quality systems, it would be to have guidances or models with a bit more detail--if I never again have to answer the question "show me where it says that in the reg's", I would be a happy camper. Others might disagree, but I think the QS function has enough difficulties with its role of "responsibility but no authority" without having to justify the "industry standards" aspect of the function.

I couldn't agree more with your opinion. :frust:
I like your statement about having guidanes or models with a bit more detail. I'm considering writing some, at least for the industry I'm associated with.

Hello, my name is Andrea Hall. I am a Quality Manager in the semiconductor industry. I have also worked in the plastics and class ring industry also in a quality role. I current work for a company called AIT and we manufacture gasline plumbing for semiconductor fabs. I have been here for 3 years. I have been in the quality field for 13 years 10 of which have been in management. I went back to school in 2004, part time, have worked full time and have 3 children...I will be graduating May 9!!! My biggest peave in quality is when production people think that product quality is my job and I will fix it rather than them actually assessing the process to fix the issues. that is about it. this is a great forum, I am glad I found it.

Hello Friends,

My name is Jason and I've selfishly gleaned from this site for some time now without contributing... even as much as an introduction. :o So, I'm changing that today and I've made it a goal to contribute more going forward. And yes, I have a specific measureable (ratio for you real zealots:biglaugh:) goal in mind. But I lack the discipline and the strategy / systems alignment necessary to support and realize the goal... wait that's a topic for another forum. :whip:

I started my career in the Quality Assurance Department of a Japanese automotive wire harness manufacturer in 1991. Most recently I finished a two year stint with a mortgage company in a business improvement and organization development capacity. I am now trying to make a success of my consulting company.

I have a nice mix of quality, training, and operations experience across several industries and so now I think I know everything. Additionally, I have a BS in Management and I am pursuing (currently on hold) a Master's in Organizational Leadership. I like to believe that one day I will uncover a new paradigm about organizations and quality that brings us closer to the truth... but in the mean time ISO, TS, etc. will have to do. :lmao:

I've truly enjoyed the site and am indebted to its contributors, esp. the likes of Wes Busey, RCBeyette, SteelMaien, Helmut Jilling... the list goes on. Thank you all for your faithfulness to the site and your valuable contributions that have helped me so much.

Have a great day and I'll see you around at the Cove!

Hey There,

I am not to sure where this is headed, as I am new to this concept, but I though it looked interesting.
I started on a search for USP information, and landed here.
Is there anyone here that knows about USP compliant packaging, and how to work thru the qualification process??

Oh ya,
I'm Blindcat,

I have been in the blown film industry for around 28 years, and worked thru a number of positions.
I am currently working as a medical products engineer for a small company in SE Wisconsin..
I really don't have too much to say so, I will end it at that.

Regards, and nice to meet you all

Moderator note:
I have copied this post to a new thread entitled USP Regulations? (http://elsmar.com/Forums/showthread.php?t=27214) in hopes the query will get better exposure there

Well, I was googling gage R & R and found this forum, so I decided to join. My name is Steve, I am a Quality Engineer at a small company in Wisconsin that machines castings and bar stock. Our main customer is Caterpillar and we do parts for Joliet, IL. on their hydrolic systems. Right now, I program and run the CMM (manual, hopefully that will change to a DCC soon), write up control plans, do production audits, Gage R & R, CPK studies, 8D corrective plans, PPAP submissions, put up with abuse, you name it. I've been doing the quality thing for about 30 years, ever since I was running the shipping dept. at a bio-electrical medical company that built cardio monitoring systems, and decided I wanted to do something a liitle less stressfull!!!:bonk: Man, did I pick the wrong field to jump into!!!!
My pet peeve is the fact that we make parts for our customers, and if the parts are out of spec, but some yahoo in a suit decides that "there good enough to ship because we need them to make this month's shipment", then they ship. Makes the quality aspect all worthless. hope to be hearing from you all real soon.

Hello!

My name is Mark Kerns and I am a Process Engineer " Six Sigma Black Belt" in the Healthcare Industry. My focus is improving Healthcare processes at the Western Maryland Health System in Cumberland, Maryland. The Health system employees approximately 2200 employees. I started my Quality career in the manufacturing industry in 1992 and recently transfer into Healthcare three years ago. I am very devoted to my personal health, I rise every morning at 3:45am to start my daily workouts. There is alot of truth in the saying "The Early Bird Gets the Worm". My pet peeve is that people do not exercise a open mind and entertain the opportunites for change. If you always do what you've always done, you always get what you always got. My father, who is my biggest supporter, worked at Goodyear for 30 years and was a "farmer". A farmer is a person who is outstanding in his field...:biglaugh:Changing the quality field requires management to measure their key outputs and this requires the use of "data" on a daily basis. Without data its just another opinion. What gets measured gets done! There is no substitute for hard work. I just found this forum today and am hoping to touch base and network with all of you! Please feel free to contact me anytime! Talk with you soon!

Cove members are from all over the world and we all engage in one common interest.

We are fortunate that Marc had the innovative plan to create the cove. I also think that we are secure with the selected monitors of the cove.

My pet peeve is that people do not compliment enough the little things that are done to help make our world go around just a little bit smoother.

A big thank you to everyone who has shared knowledge to gain improvement world wide.

Yes, I agree. Being nice to as many people as you can through out the day does make the job a bit easier. Although there are limitations....I don't even bother with people who are self centered and beg for worship....that is my pet peeve. REALLY irritating.

Located in Phillipsburg, NJ.
I've been a Mfg Engineer, SDE, SS Black Belt, involved in quality for about 10 years.

We are developing many new tools and processes. I could use lots of advise!

Name: Ed
Title: QC Manger/ITAR Compliance Officer
Industry: Military Vehicle, parts supplier.
Company/Location: Very small < than 10 employees for now, hopefully growing to many more in the comming years. Located near San Antonio, TX.
Quality time: 10 years, then out for 15 years, now back in the last 3 months. Just like being brand new. Forgot more than I remember. At least I can still read a micrometer. Which end is used for the hammering?
Something personal: Patient, Mild Tempered, Tolerant, Stuborn, Sadistic(only to myself), and probably a little crazy. All necessary qualities for a QC manger to survive.
Pet Peeve in quality: The paperwork seems to be more important than the actual quality of the piece these days. And there just seems to be irony in having to write statements about uncertainties that are certain. But that just may be me showing my age.
If I could change the world: ISO, ANSI and other specs would be free of charge just like the old military specs used to be. I guess that's my age showing again.

Company you work for and location: Currently, VMC in Redmond, WA

Something personal that sets you apart: I like my job.
Your pet peeve in quality: No matter where I go, there's always that lack of communication... I know you know what I mean!
If you could change the world of quality, what would you do? I would require company policies & procedures (non-confidential) be published. It's ridiculous that the wheel is constantly reinvented. We can all learn from for each other.

Hi,
My name is Perrie.

Yes I am a lady. Before I was born (back in the days before the ultra sound) my parents could not agree on baby names. So it ended up that no matter if I was a girl or a boy I got the same name. Perry for a boy and Perrie for a girl. So yes I ended up being named after my grandfather. This has created many very interesting situations. It seems wherever I go people are expecting a man not to mention being assigned to boys gym classes and being invited to the Air Force Academy, for a tour, BEFORE it was coed!

I am the Gage Management Supervisor at my company. We primarily make Harley Davidson parts with several smaller project parts coming through on a regular basis.

I work for Anderson Machione Service.

I have been involved in quality on and off for about 15 years. Most recently (6 Months ago) I took on gage management here at Anderson. This is not an area of quality work that I had previously been involved in so I am the ROOKIE with alot to learn about calibration and capability of gages.

I am the extremely busy person that is always given just ONE more project because they know I will do what must be done to complete it.

I guess my pet peeve about quality would be managements ability to overlook a non-conformance when the product HAS to get out the door and talks nothing but quality, quality, quality when the ISO audit is upon us.

If I could change the world of quality I would give ownership of the process to the operators. In most cases people will naturally do a better job if they have some say so. When people are treated with respect and given ownership and responsibility, for their process, they take great joy in doing a quality job. They care and that is the place to start.

I enjoy horses, riding Harley's, am an avid NASCAR fan, will not miss a GREEN BAY PACKER game and regularily go to Las Vegas for the PBR (Professional Bull Riders) world championship. My favorite activity right now is playing with my grandson.

I guess I don't really sound like someone who is in the gage management field, oh well
enough rambling.

Have a quality day!

The Gagelady
