Yep. Lots of changes over the years, but one thing stays the same - people helping people across the globe.

Just because you are in Quality does not make you a liar. I actually find it disturbing that the people who work in Quality are referred to as slimy.

Stating the facts and only answering what is asked is not "bending the truth" it is simply only tell what is required to know. :o

John Schuler

Hello to all of you ...

First, please let me say that I found this site by accident while searching for information on Homer Sarasohn and Kenneth Hopper. re: Douglas MacArthur's impressive accomplishments in leading the re-building of Japan during the 1945-1950 phase of the post-war occupation.

Trained as a technical person, my background is electronics and mechanical, let me say that I am very impressed with the sophistication of the software driving this site.

Dating myself a bit, I will let you know that I spent 7 years in Europe - 3 in the USAF, then a few as an applications engineer in Germany, then 2 as an English student in the UK before working for a number of years supporting the SR-71 project - based out of California.

As the years went by (some 40 of them) and I gathered experience creating and leading teams who supported customers (Applications, Service and Sales) I moved closer and closer to the realization that the very strides we had made in Quality since 1941 were completely absent in the Customer Interface Arena.

Today, my study time and energies are focused on bringing "Lean" principles to Customer Relationships. i.e. Getting CEOs and Owners to support the education of all their people on the Customer-centric aspects of business - empathy, observation, analysis and support - that are the very foundation of success.

While it is perhaps an uphill and even Sisyphean endeavor, it is occasionally greatly rewarding when I can watch previously-neglected, introverted, "non-sales" people step into the customer interface breach and do a fine job of improving relations and gaining self-confidence and job satisfaction, while helping their company grow and prosper (and safeguarding their very jobs) in the process.

Thank you for inviting me to join,
Sincerely,
:agree:

I have really gotten a lot out of this forum and all of you who participate. I was curious, though, who all of you are and what you do. How about letting us know a little bit about you and your background?
1. I'm Mike Proszkow
2. Quality Manager
3. By some miracle I've recently gotten out of the direct automotive supply business, and am in the automotive/electrical distribution business. We also do some custom wire harness assembly. Prior to this, I've spent 10 years in various commodities of tier-1 OEM suppliers in manufacturing quality.
4. I'm with Terminal Supply Company in Troy, MI
5. I'm a relatively recently minted Quality Manager, but have spent the last 10 years in various Quality Engineer roles, with my previous employer heavily mentoring me to take on this role. Unfortunately, our company downsized dramatically, eliminating my facility and any opportunities for advancement.
6. I'm an amazingly dorky computer/gadget nerd!
7. My biggest peeve is hearing about/seeing the same mistakes happen over and over and over again.
8. Going from automotive, high-volume (and stress) production to a different industry has shown me that the perception of what quality is is very different outside of the automotive world. I am filling a new position here - though we are ISO 9001 certified, there has never been a "Quality Manager". I had to spend the first few days explaining to people that, no, I was not hired to help test parts on the production line, but to help implement processes and provide leadership to preclude the need to test parts on the line. To cut to the chase, I would change the mentality that quality=testing and inspection.

I've been a lurker here for some time now, having been turned on to the Cove by my old boss, a good friend and mentor. I look forward to discussing and sharing ideas!

5. I have not a professional focus on any specific quality function. However, I consider quality part of my job and life.

6. I believe that anything can be done. The surest way to do it is attepting many times that you want to achieve. Nevertheless, I am always looking for more intelligence to gain efficiency.

7. I do not have any complaint about quality. But I believe that quality is
the state how you want to end. So, if we are supposed to plan our goals and have targets, quality must be one of them because it represents the end state.

8. Teach people to love themselves. That self-love would build quality
everywhere.

Thank you very much for your good wishes, Harry.

In my consulting experience I have met topics like "process mapping" and "upper management commitment". So, it is pretty likely I will post on related discussion boards.

Best regards,

Welcome to all the new folks!:bigwave:

However you managed to get here, I'm glad you came and I hope you stick around long enough to become an ":old hand" to welcome the next crop of newcomers to whom you will offer advice when asked and succor when needed. Sometimes, just sometimes, the pressure of being the "quality guy" in an organization can be really heavy. When it gets too be too much, come here to us to find a solution or at least vent some of the steam which builds up.

Just a reminder:

Interests: Business Process Mapping / Internal Audit / Quality Audit / ISO 9000 / Access Databases / Project Management

I am tasked with process mapping the entire organisation (I have used QMap - noone else seems to use this! - so am looking into alternatives) and writing an quality audit system in Access :mg:

I'm a QA Manager for NSL Analytical Services, Inc. - an ISO 17025/Nadcap-accredited commercial testing lab in Cleveland, OH.
I'm new to NSL, but I've worked in the quality function my entire career [`20 yrs]. I'm charged with responsibility to maintain/improve the QMS, implement lean laboratory practices, and enhance the EHS program [lots of synergies to be had].
Pet peeve-top management indifference, as they go, so goes the quality. Management w/out the vision to see that quality is all activities in all areas, not a dept, not the inspection dept, not the QA Mgr's job-everyone's job & top priority.
'Be the change in the world that you wish to see' - I'm working on mapping all processes at NSL [lab work, admin, managerial, quality-related] to show the interdependencies, and working on setting metrics for each process.

Hi.
Ken Garner here. I will be 78 in August, so I have lot to talk about!
Lived throught the war in a place called Grimsby. It has industry, docks and rail marshalling yards, the result being we were bombed regularly.
I left school at 14 in 1944 and worked the last year of the war at the Grimsby naval base, HMS Beaver.
Called up for National Service in 1948 in the Royal Artillery for two years. My work in civvy street was French polishing and piano repairs. I was demobbed from the army in 1950 and three months later had signed on in the Royal Air Force. After square bashing and tech training, I was posted to RAF Binbrook and joined 617 Squadron (The Dam Busters) I was working on Avro Lincolns ( Lancasters big brother) My trade was electrical mechanic and soon went back to training as a fitter (extra pay and promotion) We got rid of the Linolns and received the English Electric Canberra B2. You will know of it as the Martin B57.
We ended up on detachment in Malaya for six months, dropping 1,000 pounders on the terrs. We returned to Binbrook in November 1955 and 617 Squadron disbanded to reform as a Vulcan Squadron. I only had six months left of my service and I spent that on ASF.
Back in civvy street, I started work in a chemical factory British Titanium. Yuk! They made an intense white pigment out of Ilmenite, which is an intense black metalic sand, - Magic! I stood that for 4 years and then joined Cherry Valley Farms who produced oven ready duckling, thay also had connections with an American Company in Texas. Retired in 1990 with a company pension having risen to the dizzy height of Electrical Supervisor. I originally lived in Lincolnshire (That made me a yellow belly!!) I was also a member of the Air Cadets as a Warrant Officer and was with them for 27 years. Moved to Scotland, a beautiful country, walk to the end of the lane and lovely wooded slopes rising up to the mountains. I put time in at the local Aviation Museum making aircraft look respectable for the paying customers, but sorry to say, we are under threat, we have a new landowner and the rent has been put up from £700 per annum to £5,000 pa. They have agreed to let us have the land for £140,000, Har har! I also help my wife breeding Miniature poodles.

That about it. Ken

Hello Folks!

Let me join to the Cove. I will let the personal data to the end. I'm a "new" in quality. I've started my Q related job in 2003. I was working for a petrol pipe system company, after I was at a heating equipment firm, and now since January 2008 I'm with a plastic company.
Taht's my first Q Manager job. So I will have lot of stupid question. Forgive me for that, but I have to learn a lot to become as wise as you are.
As I mentioned I'm at a plastic company making high precision plastic parts for electric, metric, and automotive companies.
You can guess which one is my favourite :)
Now we are preparing for getting the certification of TS16949 and ISO14001.
All "technical" parameters you can see below. I hope I can have a good time here in the Cove, and in the meantime, just as a subsidiary activity I do my job here:)
Thankx

1.Name: Csaba Palmai
2.Job title: Quality Manager
3.Industry: plastics
4.Company: Siroma Plast, Hungary
5.Length of time in Q function: 5yrs Q engineer; 0.5yrs Q manager
6.Something personal that sets you apart: my health (i'M 31 with lot of problems)
7.Your pet peeve in quality: Most of people thinks quality is measuring the parts, and decide beetween acceptable and non-acceptable. They never heard about process improvement and building Q into the manufacturing process.
Q is just a cost without benefits. So Quality is a necessary bad thing.
8.If you could change the world of quality what would you do?: Change people thinking. Build basic quality to the subjects of secondary schools.

So, I am here mostly to look and learn

Dina,

Welcome! Better late than never! No requirement to be Quality, as there is quite a bit in "Engineering" that overlaps, I should think. Also, there is so much here that isn't technically Quality, either.

Enjoy the site! I hope you find it to be of use to you. :)

Hello,

I'm new to the site. It looks very interesting and could probably help me in lots of situations that leaves me pulling my hair out.

My name is Andrew.

I am an OHS Manager,

for a medium size construction company who deals in interior fit-outs.

We are based in Sydney.

A particular question if I may ask. Has anyone here had much to do with gaining FSO accreditation? I'd really like to fast track someone with that experience ... before I end up entirely bald!

My thanks and I hope to visit this site frequently. *g*

I am currently attached to a Foundry as Training/Quality Consultant.
I was working in semiconductor backend assembly for more than 25 years and hope to share some practices from there to foundry. In my last postion at STMicroelectronics, I was the SPC Mannager for Muar plant.
I am based in Malaysia and after leaving STMicro, am advising small and medium industries around here in Malaysia.
Hope to learn from others on foundry quality systems, process controls and training required.

I have really benefitted from the materials shared by all the members in this forum.

3. Industry- I work for a diversified company in the Aerospace and Automotive Industries

6. Something personal that sets you apart - I'm also an artist and have developed by own style of gentle charicatures.
7. Your pet peeve in quality- Since I'm in the library, I'll tell you my pet peeve in the library-- the person who comes in and wants to know where that red (or yellow or blue or green) book that he took out last year is. Sometimes, I think it would be best if all the books were arranged by color rather than Library of Congress.
8. I end with how I found the forum & why I joined it. I was asked to find VDA standards and a copy of a 'submission form'. This was a new request for me. I found the forum by accident through google, took a look and thought it might be helpful for me to belong.
So, here's my problem for the forum: the only information the employee gave me is; find a copy of the VDA Product Submission Form. After stumbling around the intenet & the VDA website, I decided that I needed help. So....HELP!
Thanks,
Carol

7. Make decisions without any kind of data.... No basics (no FMEA, no control plan, no SPC)... Lazy people who don't want to take the time to find, gather, analyze the data... I hate the phrase "not enough time to do it right, always time to do it again"

8. Force people to stop and think, use data, and make the right decision. I am not a very good guesser. In fact, every problem that I am sent half-way around the world to solve goes completely opposite the way that I think that it will before getting there. The problem with the quality organization of the world is that they think that they are smarter than they actually are. Don't get me wrong... these are some very SMART people. But you can't use just your brain to solve problems... you have to use data in a methodical way (DMAIC). Sorry am I off topic?

Nice to be here... Let's talk some quality!!

Hi Kevin,

Stephen here. I am from Malaysia. This is my first involvement in this forum.
I am a freelance Advisor and Auditor in TS, ISO, and others.
I find your profile interesting. Mind to know you better?

Welcome Stephen,

I am sure many here will agree with me and wonder who is the Kevin you are saying hi/hello to or attempting to communicate.

There a several ways that you can use to reach the 'Kevin' you had in mind (or any others whose post are not in the same page). One of it is to go to his post, click on the 'Quote' button at the bottom right (just as I do in this post) and start from there. Alternatively, you may go to his user name, click on his profile and leave a visitor's message. Otherwise, send him a PM (private message but use with care as at times it may become a sensitive issue).

hI Ian,
We are also implimenting TS16949 (stage 1 audit booked for 29th Oct) I have been advised that the Turtle diagram approach to detail our redefined processes would be prefered, and if it helps; then I am up for it.
I have been creating Turtles along with the process owners so they know and understand what the diagram represents. I have to say that we are a small company, and resources are limited at times, so I end up having to do the bulk of this and then explain it to the guys.
If I understand it correctly, I will be able to reduce our current quality manual down from 30 odd pages down to 2 or 3(including the overall process flow diagram). This will be backed up with relevent procedural documents.
I hope you are successfull

Best regards
Barry

Hi All, I was directed to the site last year by a Quality Manager of a company I was auditing and having visit the site on more than one occasion, thought it was about time and joined and said hello to everyone.

1. Name:- Aaron Broadhurst
2. Job Title :- Supplier Quality Engineer - Europe Yes I am the only 1 at the moment.
3. Industry you're in or have been in:- Currently Manufacturing of Antivibration mounts for Automotive, Truck Bus, Off Highway. Previously automotive as a QE (T1 & T2), Shipbuilding and Defence Industries as well as being a time served machine operator.
4. Company :- LORD Corporation Europe working in the UK, Italy and many areas of central and eastern Europe.
5. Length of time in quality function:- Good Question, in the sense of being part of the Quality Function I suppose since 2006, but I have been involved in Six Sigma and CI for about 8 years
6. Something personal that sets you apart:- I have 7 children...people usually find that as something which sets me apart from the norm of 2.4 kids.
7. Your pet peeve in quality:- Blaming the Quality department for the failings of other departments, just because the negative impact is reported by the Quality Team. Its not my fault that the customer does not like what you sent him, the procedures are there to help, they are not an obstacle to be overcome or worked round.
8. If you could change the world of quality, what would you do?:- Let the Value Stream feel the pain of the QE when things go wrong, maybe then ownership of quality would be universal.

6. Systems need to meet the customer requirements, as well as the user's requirements. Factoring in the human element in the equation is something I don't see a lot of others doing.
7. Your pet peeve in quality: my observations are that a higher than normal percentage of folks who work in quality departments are "finger pointers". The key to quality is preventing defects, not simply pointing fingers at them.
8. If you could change the world of quality, what would you do? I agree with one post that said all operations people ought to serve a stint in the quality department, so that the notion of "quality" is at the forefront of workers' thoughts.

Hi folks!

I'm returning, haven't been in here much since December.

My name is John Carpenter, a self employed consultant/trainer/coach. I hold an RABQSA QMS Principal auditor's card and I'm also certified to teach a few of the Plexus training products.

I typically work with ISO 9001 and TS 16949 clients but also get into few other areas of quality training as well, including the core tools.

I live in Black Mountain, North Carolina and am a member of the local ASQ section where I served as a programs co-chair last year.

My pet peave occurs when I am working with a client where the management team is dysfunctional, self-serving, and not supportive of the improvement effort.

I think this a fantastic forum, with wonderful people providing such great information, with so much enthusiasm and sincerity. It is truly laudable. I had been very regularly visiting the forum some years ago, but then got busy on other things and could not spare the time. But I'm back now for continuing my 'learning'

I don't know how many people really read this with any particular interest, but it's obviously one way to get some attention, and maybe to get some response when you really need it.

1. Sohrab Choksey (if you want to know my origin you can PM me)
2. Management Consultant (focus on ISO9000 - it's better than not having any clue of where to get started on the Quality Journey, if at all you are really interested in going somewhere - forget what all the naysayers might have to say, as there's always plenty of them - ofcourse they have every right to their opinions, but I think 'positivity' is always better than any 'negativity')
3. Consultancy - Management and Personal Improvement (after all you can't possibly do anything without first knowing and understanding yourself). By qualification and industry experience, however, I belong to the Electronics Industry, and am basically an R&D person with phenomenal interest and focus on Business Management and problem-solving.
4. My own consultancy firm 'Tech-Man Solutions' (short for Technical and Management Solutions, where 'Solutions' would imply a focus on helping businesses and individuals to solve their 'technical' and 'management' problems.
5. In 'management' since 1978, in 'quality management' specifically since 1984 (makes me pretty old, I know, but you wouldn't think so if you ever met me some time)
6. Thinking 'positive' and 'seeing an opportunity' (to help make someone's life easier or to make someone's world better), in every situation of 'difficulty'. But better still I believe in continuous introspection and thirst for improvement, through continual learning, even at this age.
7. Talk about doing 'Z-zee', without knowing or understanding that you first need to take care of the fundamentals 'a-b-c'.
8. If you could change the world of quality, what would you do? Institute some way to first assess 'top management' awareness and commitment, before looking any further for any kind of assessment or initiative. Actually that's quite easy to determine.

P.S. You are welcome to have other views and subscribe to the same, and I really would not want to have a debate - so you will probably not get any response in defence of any stand I might apparently have taken here.
Thank you all for your wonderful contributions.

Firstly Hello to all

1) Darren Durney

2) Quality / Health & Safety Manager

3) Engineering Industry (previously in Automotive & FMCG

4) Cadet Engineering Ltd in Staffordshire England

5) Coming upto 10 years now (seems like a lifetime lol)

6) I switch off when i leave work dont think or worry about it helps keep the stress levels down i think

7) Not enough support or enthusiasm from other members of mangement all talk and no action

8) Tell companies they must have more than one person trying to do this role I work alone and it is an uphill struggle most of the time with writing procedures and trying to implement new ideas, then having to do audits and sample approvals on top of doing health and safety (sorry for bleating a bit there) Also make it mandatory that managemnt must have an say in the way the companies want to go forward with quality agaion most just talk about it but when it comes to actioning things they shy away (Stand up and bite the bullet if it works hurrah if not we try another route until it suits everyone and works)

After looking through the site over the last few weeks I would like to say a big thank you to all some of the files and discussions on here have been informative to say the least and have sometimes helped me look at things in a different light I think we all need that and this site reaches out to everyone well done and keep up the goood work

8. If you could change the world of quality, what would you do? The percieved quality culture. In so many industries, one thing seems to be consistent is the way quality and production (whatever type) seem to have such an adversarial relationship. It does not need to be that way, but the culture (sometimes as a product of management) dictates this is just the way of things. I have made it my purpose to point out as frequently as possible that we are all on the same team.

I'm originally from Scotland but emigrated to Denmark and am now a Danish citizen. I've been Quality Manager for several comanies in Denmark but had an idea about 10 years ago, patented it - and have been going at it ever since.

My main field of interest is accessories for digital calipers and measurement accessories. By taking a look at my website it'll give a better idea of what I can do. Needless to say advice is free, and my specialty is practical external and internal screw thread pitch diameter measurement for all thread sizes and types. If you don't believe me test me :)

I've been working with a caliper manufacturer and I believe that I'll be the first to have a digital caliper that has micrometer accuracy. I have also invented a caliper pressure device that allows the user to see how much measurement pressure is being applied. Stangely, as far as I know; a digital caliper is the only measurement tool without a recommended or specified measurement pressure. This lack of specified measurement pressure is also probably the reason why digital calipers are often regarded as being inaccurate.

So, if anyone has questions about screw threads and tolerances, just ask and if I can help, I will. As I don't pretend to know everything I'll ask for help and advice for myself from time to time.

2. Quality Management Systems Coordinator
3. Heavy Manufacturing including CNC machining, Fabrication, Assembly, ect.
4.
5. ISO Auditor for 4 years now currently working to attain my CQA
6. I am incapable of BS
7. So many pet peives in quality, probably lead by statements people make particularly "It is what it is". That statement is only ever true if you want it to be.
8. I would make quality departments just as "accountable" as manufacturing areas. Too often I hear quality say we have the controls in place and manufacturing made the mistake.

Gordon Clarke
20th August 2008, 10:05 AM
I slightly disagree with only one of your points. I've found that with most manufacturing errors, the main culprit is the design department. I've never understood why design departments don't make it normal procedure to run things by production before issuing drawings.
Of course there are companies that actually do have communication between production and design, but from my own experience this isn't the norm.
As Quality Manager I always had more problems with design than with production.
In one company (and this is a true story) production wouldn't keep with tolerance as they said they were too tight and design said they wouldn't increase tolerances until production kept the ones specified. The Quality department always got caught in the middle. The design manager and production manager wouldn't sit down together and most communication had to go though me.

Gordon, I think you are off topic for this particular thread but what you are talking about is classic "Concurrent Engineering". Google this subject, you will see a wealth of information. It is not a new subject, but is a very common sense one as you have pointed out. Your research on this will give you additional insite as to how you could adopt such a concept.

Good Luck

I seem to have a knack for finding simple solutions to what other find complicated to solve. I’d rather be stranded on desert island with a do-it-yourself person than a theoretical genius. If the DIY person was female I’d regard that as a bonus – although my wife might disagree!
7. Your pet peeve in quality

Hi folks,

My name is Stephen.

I have recently started a new job as a Quality Manager.

From my various positions which have started as a Quality Control Operator in the food industry for four years ( an eye opener ), a Quality Auditor in the computing industry for nine years ( an education ) and the aerosol manufacturing business for around eight months ( an eye opener & education ).

I am now involved in the glazing industry ( double glazing, conservatories and roofing ).

I believe in simplicity, directness and efficiency.

I get frustrated with people in positions who should know better as to me quality means business.

Im glad I have came across this site and look forward to various discussions.

All the best,

Stephen

Hello,

I am Deb Johnston. I am currently providing quality system consulting for my former employer (so that I can be at home when my child is not is school). I have been working in the quality field for almost 15 years.

I established an ISO 9002 compliant quality system for my company back when I started out, and was responsible for maintaining the system. They upgraded the system to ISO 9001 while I was gone. I now help maintain the ISO 9001:2000 compliant system.

My new challenge is integrating two quality systems (because of a recent acquistion) and maintaining compliance to both10 CFR 50 Appendix B and ISO 9001:2000.

My name is Jenny Swords (not a Jennifer). I am a Quality Coordinator at Spartek Systems in Alberta, Canada. We produce geophysical instrumentation for the oil/gas industry. I've been in quality since graduating from college in 1993. I'm known as the "Quality Cop". Yes, I'm anal about quality. I've been an inspector, an auditor, a sorterMy pet peeve in quality is that I hate people blowing smoke up my a** relating to circumventing quality processes and procedures. Gordon Clarke

Hi Jenny,
I agree with you regarding "circumventing quality procedures" but have you ever wondered why this happens so often?
My personal experience is that when company quality manuals and procedures get written, at some point a severe case of writing diarrhoea, to remain in your terminology :) sets in. This often results in the desire for Utopia rather than the necessary basics.
It's rather like when a draftsman puts a very tight tolerance on a drawing to be "more than absolutely" safe, and the guys that produce the part probably knows just as much about the product as anyone else, and knows it's too tight. Departments should really cooperate more than they do.
I've yet to hear about a company that doesn't try to bend it's own "rules" the day after ISO 9001 approval, when the moment arrives that the "sh**" actually hits the fan.

A small addition to what I just wrote. "Do it right first time" is good but "Do the right thing right first time" might be even better. The second "slogan" takes a wee bit longer to put into motion than the first :)

Gordon,

Thanks for the insight. Do the right thing right the first time is definitely the better slogan. I agree it takes time for employees to grasp that. I've got to go, I'm holding a meeting for the new Leads to explain the nonconformance process to them.

To no-one in particular :)

I'm guessing that this "place" is one of the most read. Everyone wants to ogle the newcomer :)

I've been on both "teams" - worked as an auditor and been on the end of more than one audit. It lets me see things from two directions.

In virtually all cases where I've audited I knew a lot about the products the audited companies were producing. My main problem when being audited has been that, when the auditor has turned up with a "standard" form and questionaire and obviously knew next to nothing about what the company actually makes or what was really important.

In one case (at a machine producing factory) the questions being asked were so naive that I asked what his background was to see if he was trying to be funny or if he really meant what he asked. It turned out that he was a construction engineer that had switched jobs recently. Luckily catastrophy was avoided but I don't think either the company I worked for at that time or his auditing organization got much out of it. At best a waste of time and effort for both parties.

My point with this is - if someone is going to audit a company or organization out of their "area of expertise" then contact someone who should have a reasonable working knowledge of what could and should be relevant.

A little help won't make anyone an expert overnight, but it could prevent them from looking like a complete amateur.

I'm sure in here we can find people that know a bit about just everything :)

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this forum and have found a TON of useful information for our company and just knowledge in general.

I'm currently the Quality system manager for a relatively new company - have worked in the industry before.

Thanks to all of you dedicated posters! You know who you are!
