Name: Joel Osborne

Title: Independant Pharmacy Consultant

Current Responsibility: Assisting pharmacy automation start-up company in medical device design. They are UK based, I am based in Florida. (Makes for a lot of traveling)

Current Challenge- Coming up with initial policies sufficient to get everyone headed on the right track, which will eventually lead to CE marking and MHRA compliance. We believe we are developing a Class I m and Class I s device, or certainly one that arguably fall within those classification systems. My needs are policies for Design Control and Vendor Selection. We anticipate using outsourced full-service device design house(s) for the development work.

Forum Needs-Like a lot of people, I need to see samples of policies that get me started in the right direction with the right components. I can then modify the words to fit our situation. I have looked around and use the "search" engine within forums, but still can't find what I am looking for. Any thoughts???

Good Morning,

My name is Eugene Smith and I am the Laboratory Quality Coordinator for a large tertiary hospital in Halifax, Nova Scotia. There are eight laboratories in my District ranging from large specific discipline centres to small community-based sites. Presently I am developing a QMS that will be in compliance to ISO 15189-07, 17025-05 and Z902-04 standards. Other standards to follow include ISO 15190 for Safety and ISO 22870 for POCT.

I have enjoyed reading numerous threads as I proceed with policy implementation but I wish there were more medical laboratory related activities here. It would be great to see more lab people participating in the on-going discussions.

It is interesting, and sometimes comforting, to know that others have experienced similar challenges on the road to quality. Thank you for the opportunity to broader my knowledge and the ability to openly communicate with other quality focused individuals.

Hi ,let me introduce myself, my name is Rehela and I am from Livingston,Scotland.:)
I have been in "Quality" since leaving University in 1988, started off as a TQM Facilitator/Trainer with British Steel, helping to roll out their Total Quality Management program, carrying out awareness workshops and setting up Kaizen groups.
After that I worked as a Quality Engineer for a large Japanese Semiconductor manufacturer for 10 years (implemented ISO 9001) after taking a short career break to become a "mom" , I then worked as Quality Engineer for a Sub-contract Medical Device manufacturer for 7 years (implemented ISO 13485) covering mainly yield improvements, internal and process auditing, incoming QA and end of line quality controls, CAPA,etc..

Since start of 2008, I am busy setting up my own Quality consultancy and training business, I am also getting associate work part time for another Medical Device consultancy (mainly auditing and training)

My pet peeve is people who don't want to improve and say "We've always done it this way".

Look forward to "meeting" with like-minded people on elsmar.
My main focus right now is to get all the professional qualifications I need for what I plan to do.Just found out this morning I got a good pass in my IRCA Lead Auditor exam for ISO 13485:2003, so that's just the start..
Take care for now.:bigwave:

A quant is a person who works with quantities, a number cruncher. I started out as an actuary, but discovered that I took too much of a big picture view of things just to manipulate huge databases using arcane methods.

Even though I often see the world in numeric terms, I have been moving steadily away from that. The statistical analysis in quality control appears to be a good compromise for me - nothing particularly arcane, but lots of very concrete real-world applications.

Well my name is Joe. I'm 27 and a process worker at a chemical plant. The last few years I've been interested in all areas of competitive manufacturing and trying to grab a desk job at work involving the quality side of things. I can see my rap sheet doesn't compare to other applicants in this forum but it's good to see it's filled with experts whose brains I would love to pick. I may not be able to help a lot...or at all but appreciate the help none the less.

Welcome to all the new folks!:bigwave:

One topic you may see discussed from time to time here in the Cove is "Personal Branding" which simply means you carve out a niche for yourself and be consistent in associating that niche with your name.

If you hang around other quality wonks long enough, you soon learn it is better (psychologically and economically) to be known as the "Quality Guy with the answers to our problems" than as the "Kwality Kop who is always looking to shout GOTCHA!"

I'm looking forward to that day when we will ALL be known as the "Quality Guy with the answers to our problems"

It is tough getting to an upper level position in a man's world. I do think that starting from the bottom gives you a better background to see all facets of the quality system and how each group ties into the next.

Hello, my name is Lorenzo
I am currently the Site Quality Manager of an electronic industry located in Northen Italy (part of a WW company).
I am working in quality since 1990. Before I was a process engineer
I am 50 years old, 3 children and 1 wife. In my free time I am.... the driver for the family :D
After years I think that the real quality (I mean The Quality) has nothing to do with certifications but with the attitude, the culture, of a team to do things in the better way. Similar to the Fine Arts World perhaps.
International Standards may give you good suggestions, but if you are not in the righ way of thinking a standard is just a collection of words
Have a nice day!

Hi my name is Karen
I'm the VP of quality and mfg at a medical device manufacturing firm in Buffalo, NY. I've been doing this for about 5 years and started the whole process of ISO9001:2000 and 13485:2003 challenge. Been off and on this site for a couple years - always has valuable information and people have been willing to share and help with what I needed to find ... thank you all.:thanx:

Hi Brad,
Loved the quote "I used to jog but the ice cubes kept falling out of my glass" Now I'll wait for the oportunity to use it - probably if I get stuck with some health/motion fanatics.
Most Danes are great at English but not always perfect - true story - a guy in a bar said, "Whisky on the rocks, but no ice". ("but no ice" was said in Danish :)
My next remark has nothing to do with the previous - just one thing leading to another - as an exScot, especially when near an American with a "weird" drinking habit, I say, "If Scots had intended whisky to be taken with ice cubes they'd have found a way to get them to take up space in the bottle from the start!"

Hi this is my first post but I have been poking around Elsmar Cove for a month now. What a great bunch of people and resources!

I just took the QA Manager position for an Asia/Pacific medical device distributor (Technically we became a manufacturer because we add labeling, accessories, and repackage) based in Hong Kong. I’m here to put a ISO13485 Quality System in place (right now we only have 2 “official” procedures).

I’ve been working in medical device manufacturing for the last 6 years in the US.

This is my first job title with “Quality” in it but I have had quality engineers reporting for me for the last 3 years.

Something that sets me apart is even though my title says “Manager”, I am a one man band. J

Pet peeve, hmmm… government officials who adopt regulations that they don’t fully understand. (i.e. India adopting pharmaceutical type regs for medical devices)

If I could change the world of quality, I would get everyone to tout that, a well designed and executed quality system can make your company run smoother. So follow the dang procedure or change it if its wrong!:biglaugh:

Hello ChrisSugg,

Two of your comments intrigue and interest me :)

Pet peeve, hmmm… government officials who adopt regulations that they don’t fully understand. (i.e. India adopting pharmaceutical type regs for medical devices)

Change it to all "officials" and I agree completely :) Too many laws and regulations are made by people who sit behind a desk all day.

If I could change the world of quality, I would get everyone to tout that, a well designed and executed quality system can make your company run smoother. So follow the dang procedure or change it if its wrong!

I don't understand why changing a (quality) procedure is regarded as be virtually impossible either. All other procedures and specifications can quickly be changed if they presnt a problem - especially when money is involved :D

Maybe you could make a contribution to the thread "Quality has to do with attitude, not certifications".
A "one man band" has to live in reality :D

Hello all - My user name is SMitch and my most recent position was System Quality Manager in the telecom industry focused on the DSL market segment. My team was responsibile for HW, SW and Silicon validation. I was employed by a semiconductor mfr in the Silicon Valley for the last 10 years. I have held management positions in HW & SW test, operations and manufacturing engineering prior to this. I've also been in charge of the ISO 9001 compliance program over the last 8 years and successfully took 2 BU's at two sites through external certification with DnV. I've completed training as an external auditor through SAI Global but have not put this skill into practice.

My business division was recently sold and I am in transition at this time. I am currently assessing the feasibility of an industry shift to Medical Devices or Solar Power for personal growth and the stimulation that new and different technology offers. Since these fields are relatively new to me, I am working to build my networking contacts in these areas. I will also be completing my CSCP, Certified Supply Chain Professional designation (APICS) by the end of the year and plan to focus on the Customer-Supplier relationship and Supplier Quality. This would combine my background and interests in quality and operations.

My pet peeve in quality is the internal stuggle we face with some in management on the value of developing and following procedures. CA will always be necessary but not as efficient or effective as putting more effort into PA and Risk Assessment. One of our key challenges as Quality professionals is to determine the right amount of verification and validation, documentation and procedures that add real competitive value to a business and selling this value to management, without whose support, our quality plans will be more difficult to implement across the organization.

I just came across this quality forum and I'm very impressed with the collaboration. Any suggestions to aid in my career transition in the Silicon Valley are appreciated.

Regards, SMitch

Greetings to all,

My name is John Brewer and I'm currently serving as the Quality Manager for Kaskaskia Tool & Machine, a small shop located in New Athens, Illinois. My background in quality has been in various sized shops ranging from family owned (KTM, Marsh) to medium sized (Intercontinental Engineering) to large (McDonnel Douglas Aircraft in St. Louis, Videojet Technologies). In total I've been involved in some aspect of quality for almost 30 years.

I've always enjoyed working in the smaller shops. I'm a people person and love making a difference in my work environment. One of the best parts of this job is that it's only 6 blocks from my home of 28 years. The commute is great (walking except in pouring rain). Having employment this close to home is a great incentive to constantly improve the company!

Since coming to KTM last September I've assisted them in attaining registration to the ISO9001-2000 and AS9100 standards. Currently I'm working on the continual improvement aspect of this registration. I was originally hired to monitor and improve their overall quality system with the ISO / AS as a possibility sometime in the future. Thanks to Boeing the future came quickly and KTM has grown and become a stronger company as a result.

Elsmar Cove has been a great asset in leading me to help in establishing First Article Inspection (which is still in it's infancy here at KTM). I've also enjoyed reading and learning from the vast knowledge base visiting this forum.

An area of quality that has always been a challenge is consistency within any organization. End of month / quarter pushes have a tendency to override good quality judgment. Holding folks accountable seems to be the bottom line to this challenge. :nopity:

I'm looking forward to what the future brings with this position as there are many areas in which both the company and I can grow. I hope also this forum will be an asset in that growth!

Hello, my name is Mary Arnold, Chief Quality Officer for Green Diamond Tire in New York. I have been "snooping" on this forum for quite some time and have found a great wealth of pertinent information that has helped our company considerably as we have gone through the ISO 9001 process. I especially have enjoyed the heated debates about corrective and preventive actions. I am very proud to say that we experienced our initial certification audit the past two days and miraculously passed without any minor or major nonconformities! This is a huge accomplishment for us as a company, and I want to thank all of you for your insightful posts that I read while preparing for the audit. However, now that we have passed, we are very excited to market this to our customers, financial supporters, suppliers and community. Can anyone please help direct me towards some successful approaches regarding the marketing of the system after being certified? Also, where could I purchase the ISO signs for the building, stationery, etc? Does this have to come through the auditor? Is there a protocol for this? I appreciate your knowledge, experience and insight in this matter. Thanks! Mary Arnold :thanx:

You may want to visit thread Quality has to do with Attitude, not Certifications
as I'm guessing you have first hand experience on this subject :)
I was once QM at a pump company (centrifugal) that went for ISO 9001 because of the requirement from a big customer.

Hello everyone. My name is Rick Homman, and I am the new operations director for a tool manufacturer in NE Ohio.

I'm looking for some advice.......The plant I took over is struggling with inefficiency, high operating cost.....everything is broken, operationally speaking. I'm convinced the place to start the turnaround is 5S, not SMED, VSM, or 6sigma. Any thoughts?

Hello,
1-4 My name is Rob Sniegowski. I am the quality manager for a small (14 employees) aerospace machine shop, Blue Streak Grinding, in Phoenix. We specialize in cylindrical grinding.

5. Length of time in quality function.
I found my way into the position in 2002 because, simply, nobody else was going to do it. “The quality manual has been started. Do you know what that is? You finish it up.” That is how my boss started me in the quality biz.

6. Something personal that sets you apart.
Charcoal fanatic!!! Anything worth doing is worth doing right.

7. My pet peeve in quality? Misuse of SPC.

8. If you could change the world of quality, what would you do?
I would introduce root cause analysis to the U. S. Congress. Oh, and auditors, too.

I am one of three leads in the quality department. I am also an ODAR within our facility, so I get to waste hours of productive time each day signing tags.
We are a PMA house ( Kinda like being the Autozone store in the aerospace world) So we produce or distribute thousands of parts to airlines around the world.
I work in th main headqurters in Springville Utah, all though we have offices all over the US and world.
I have been here three years but prior to this my first life was spent in the medical device world ( class 2) where I made contact lenses. Since the demand for RGP lenses has now dwindled to almost nothing I jumped industries and came here.
As for what sets me apart, I live in Utah.... and I'm the only card carrying athiest in the company ( or perhaps in my town as well) If that doesn't make me different nothing else will.
As for my pet peeve.. I hate being seen as an annoyance as something to be tolerated since we are seen as non-value added. And having to beg for money to have tools that I feel are essential to complete my job.
If I could change the world of quality.... We would be Rockstars.. treated like royalty and seen as the saviours that I think we are.. and paid tremendously large dog choking omygawd huge salaries to match our demi-god status. If not that, a chair that wasnt broken would be nice.

It is no coincidence that in no known language does the phrase 'As pretty as an Airport' appear.

2,3,4,5 I'm the Senior App's Engineer and Quality Manager for Zwick USA outside Atlanta GA. We are a subsidiary of the Zwick Roell Group of Germany, a manufacturer of high end materials testing machines and systems. Been in the service dept since 91 or so... quality manager since 2000, got sick of it by 2003 (after bringing the company through 17025 accreditation as a cal lab) and took a few years off to fix CNC machining centers in the wood working industry... Zwick dragged me bad kicking and screaming in 2007 and chained me to the quality thrown to make a bunch of paper that is usually ending in the words "at a 95% Confidence Level, k=2" as well as a host of other responsibilities that make the minutes pass as fast as an X-43a flight... (Mach 9+ or so I think)
6. Something personal that sets you apart: If you speak German and know what this means,,, "eierlegende Woll-Milch-Sau" plus I can cook pretty well over an open fire and enjoy tearing up trails on my KTM 450...
7. Your pet peeve in quality: I have zero time for "pet peeves". (+/- 3 minutes/day at 95%CL (k=2)) (see,,, I can't stop)
8. If you could change the world of quality, what would you do? I'd be like Bruce Almighty and grant every "Quality" person all their wishes and prayers... Which in my case would be to have A2LA figure out my uncertainty budgets...

Being someone that deals with China I know that China can supply quality products. The problem is that many, when buying from China, only focus on paying as little as possible. That approach would get you rubbish from any country in the world - probably even Japan :notme:

Still, you must have a reason for your remark and I'd love to hear it if you let me know which thread to go to ;)

Hello Slidingby! Welcome to the Cove! :bigwave:

There is a Welcome thread (see below) in the Coffee Break & Water Cooler Discussions forum that you may want to check out. It is the thread where newbies to the Cove can introduce themselves and read others' intros, as well. Feel free to read through it and post your own introduction there, if you like.

http://elsmar.com/Forums/showthread.php?t=1477

If you have trouble navigating the Cove, there is a thread just for that, too. I believe it's called How to Use Cove Software or something similar. Or, you can contact a Moderator for assistance (our names are either in burgundy or dark green font for easy identification), and any of us will be happy to help.

Looking forward to your contributions to the Cove!

If this could only be standard procedure in every manufacturing company - sigh  I bet it would make most look at things differently.
At one company where I was Quality Manager I asked the Production Manager if i could have two of his men for process control. He gave me is two best machinists! Needless to say, they had respect from day 1.

Hi, I am Ree, I am a Quality Supervisor in Ohio. My company manufactures couplers and attachments for heavy equipment in the construction industry. I have been in Quality for over 11 years, have my ASQ CQT/CQA and just took the exam for CMQ/OE last Saturday, (It was BRUTAL!)
I ride a Harley to my job on most days unless it's raining or below freezing, (like this morning) which sets me apart from a lot of ladies out there. My biggest peeve in quality is when someone says "we always do it like that" (tribal knowledge has no place in the modern workplace)
If I could change the world of quality, I would back the whole thing up the pipe and make them do it right from the get-go so we could spend the majority of our time on improvements instead of damage control.

Hopefully you enjoyed yourself! I love Portland, I have lived here for years. I keep feeling like it's time to leave and explore more of the world but it's hard when the entire world wants to live here! I suppose I will have to leave at some point soon but I feel it will only happen under certain conditions, one of which includes a steady job and paycheck.

I think I should probably add my official welcome description as well.
Here it is:

Hi there,

i'm Jaap from the Netherlands. I work for a small consultancy firm focussed on quality and process improvement for production firms. I've been working here for just over a year. I graduated in business administration (focussed on organisation design and change) and have a bachelor in electrical engineering.

I like te combination technique and people. I am convinced that you can build the best machine in the world but if you put the wrong people (skills and mindset) you can still produce the worst product.

I like the forum for its wealth of information and hoping to read much more in the near future.

thanks,

I heard about one company where the designers were made to go out to customers with the servicemen and they (the designers) had to deal with unsatisfied customers while the servicemen could fix the fault. Our shop has been around for 7 years that started as one person.(me) Now there is 4 cnc's as well as the usual manual equipment, plus welders and fab equipment, and a staff of 4. We have designed and manufactured a small line of auto racing parts, design and build automotive assembly tooling, and build and/or fix whatever comes in the door.

Just before the current slowdown we got a little exposure to the areospace and medical markets with a former customer ( that was bought out and merged with a larger company) Now I would like to shift our focus more towards machining. I want to implement a quality system, (we never had much of one before). So now I am faced with, and could use some guidance on getting this done. This is a huge site and to be honest, I don't know where to start. I need to fit all that we do into something that can be handled by 4 people. Since there is only for, we will all have multiple tasks and I will be asking many questions, and I am sure the first ones might seem pretty obvious, but I have to start somewhere.:)

Welcome all new comers. You have made the right choice by becoming part of the Cove Family.

Just some pointers for the new comers:

1. Ask questions.

2. Be specific and as in depth as you can with your questions. It makes it easier to provide good answers.

3. Don't be afraid to ask questions or even provide your insight into a question.

4. If you don't understand something about the Cove's software, there are two things you can do: A. Ask one of the friendly Moderators and B. Read the posts in the "How to use the Software" forum.

5. If you feel that a post is not right or inappropriate, use the "Report Post" button. This sends an email to all Moderators, and it will be discussed and any action necessary will be taken.

6. Use the Search Function to see if the question has been asked before.

And last but the most important pointer is:

7. Have fun!!!

I am extremely pleased to see so many new members from all over the world.

Welcome to the Cove!:bigwave:

As business becomes more and more global, the synergy we experience here in the Cove from mingling folks from so many different cultures will stand us in good stead in our professional lives in dealing with folks from different cultures up and down our supply chains.

The more we learn about the "tricks and traps" from our fellow quality professionals, the more we are enabled to provide better service to, and earn better rewards from, our various organizations.

To all the newbies (and to the old timers who read this):

We've got a great thing going here in the Cove; I'm looking forward to each of you making it even greater!

Hello all,

The name is Pete Hunt, I am the Quality Manager of an electroplating company in London, England. I have been a Quality Manager for over 15 years now and the main bulk of my experience has been in the Engineering/Aerospace industries. My pet peeve is specifications and the need of companies to give us their own specs when a Def Stan or Mil Spec would have been more than sufficient for their requirements.
