2. Job Title or explanation of what you do
3. Industry you're in or have been in
4. Company you work for and location
5. Length of time in quality function

8. If you could change the world of quality, what would you do?

Eric

Jerry Anderson, Quality Control Manager, Automotive, Alto Products Corp. Atmore Alabama, 35 Yrs, I am sold on the details, making sure the details are covered on any job usually gets the job done correctly. I stress the importance of covering ALL the details to all my employees. My pet peeve is - People in the industry think that the quality department is responsible for all the Quality in the Company when quality personnel only touch maybe 5 % of the product. To Stress the importance of communications
------------------
See you down life's highway!

Name - Jerry Anderson
Job Title - Qualitn Control Manager, Alto Products Corp. Atmore Alabama, specialize in Automotive Transmissions Clutch Plates, Gears and related components 10 years, worked in General aviation Acraft Industry for 25 years as Quality Supervisor, Quality Manager, Quality Engineer, manufactured Ge. Avia. A.C . Engines and accessories. I tend to pay particular attention to Details, the fine details are sometime overlooked and could be very important to the finished product. My peeve is that most everyone in Industry thinke the Quality Department should be reponsible for ALL QUALITY, but the truth is that Quality only touch maybe 5% of the product. Quality cannot be inspected into a part it has to be built into it.

I would emphasise GOOD COMMUNICATIONS, very necessary to the function of any Industry and is the # 1 Problem in Industry

7. The world of quality, and especially the more "popular" standards such as ISO 9000, seems designed for high volume manufacturing.
8. If I could change the world of quality, I would stop its' massive focus on large volume manufacturing and make it more amenable to the construction industry and service industries. Reliability, in particular, could be used to great effect in the industry I currently work in.

Oh boy :D If you have the one and only true answer then please start a thread. I promise to be an attentive student ;)

Seriously, let me know which thread to go to if you either find one already suitable, or start a new one. I think I've seen dozens of good definitions of "quality" but none I'd say was "The One".

Hello All,

Quality Engineer here from Greenville, SC. Frequent browser, first time poster. I really needed a place to vent with like-minded professionals on the news I received this morning. If I went around boasting to my family, friends, and co-workers, I would look like a real prick.

I received my CQE results this morning---and passed! This was my first time taking the exam and was a bit surprised that I received certification. I'm the only person in my company to receive cert. on the first try, so I take a bit of pride in that. I'm also 2 weeks shy of my 27th birthday, so I feel like I have a strong start to my young career. All this while juggling a very demanding career, wife, and 2 toddlers.

I know I'm a newbie around here, so I hate to start off with such a boastful post, but I'm on cloud 9 and I knew if anyone could empathize, it would be the Covers! Thanks!

I hope you are an ASQ member and will attend Section meetings and give presentations and write papers to maintain your certification. If not a member, time to consider joining to make the recert easier (sure beats paying for retaking the exam!)

When you have a chance to come down off Cloud Nine, you ought to take the time to tell (write a post) how and what you studied to prepare for the certification exam. Such information is useful to other folks fretting over passing the certification exam. Just as importantly, tell what did NOT work in preparing for the exam. Where there any surprises for you in the test or was it pretty cut and dried?

Thanks all. I am a member of my local section and have been attending meetings for the past year. I recently relocated and joined a new section, so I am anticipating becoming more involved. Like most with certification, I have very little desire to retake the exam, so I intend to use all resources to stay certified.

Concerning preparation, the most helpful thing for me was taking a Statistics course at a local technical college. I have a Bachelor's degree in Journalism and happened to stumble into quality engineering as a profession. Accordingly, my statistics and engineering background needed some catching up. Otherwise, I spent quite a bit of time with the QCI Primer, making notecards, etc. I wanted to know a lot of the material very well so I could answer quickly and spare time for more difficult problems.

I'm not sure of my score and the Pareto analysis on what sections in the BOK need improvement, but I was really lost on the Reliability problems (MTBF, etc.) For whatever reason, the questions were not phrased and set up on the exam as I had studied. Additionally, I did not take a good reference index into the exam (i.e. Juran's Handbook)...I feel this would have helped immensely and given me extra time on some of the more time-intensive problems.

I'm certainly not the star student, but if anyone is prepping, I'd be glad to share anything I can that helped me. Just get in contact.

Your 1 to 6 - Impressive :bigwave:
Your No. 7 is a commonly shared problem/peeve.
Re your No. 8 however, why re-invent the wheel? The Cove is already here :D
If you or someone else could get senior management to enter and read the Cove then it would be a good start to your No.7. Only having quality professionals getting together is rather like having a church filled with ministers listening to, and preaching at, each other. Maybe that's how the hundreds of different religions world-wide originally started :notme:

Quality management in China still has a long road to go

I don't think quality and quality management is the problem in China. It's more that the (foreign) customers expect a Boeing 747 and only wants to pay for a bike. Many suppliers in any country will supply poor quality if the price isn't reasonable.

There is a thread on outsourcing you may want to look at :D

My experience in Quality Audits is quiet minimal. Was part of an audit team in my last employment about 6 sixs ago.

I'll be needing lots of help from folks here to get started.

Thanks.

:) My name is Nancy Sue Wainwright and I was referred to this list as a possible source for Quality personnel. I am a contingency recruiter working at all levels of plant operations including: manufacturing; engineering; maintenance; sales, and management. I've been in the business for over 25 years and truly enjoy what I do. For the most part, I concentrate on the Metals Industry and Heat transfer Industries but I have worked in Aerospace, Electronics, and government contracting.

As I am not a 'regional' recruiter, the opportunities I handle could be anywhere in the U.S. and occasionally Canada. Generally, this does not include Hawaii or Alaska.

At this time, I have 2 opportunities I will be posting to the list. Please respond directly to me if you are interested. My policy is: No one is referred to a company without that persons' express permission. Any referrals are guaranteed confidence unless specifically requested otherwise.

I'm looking forward to being part of this group.

Oh! My pet peeve, which has not changed in all these years, is the lack of understanding exactly what Quality and Reliability mean and the difference between them!

For a little while with locomotive and light armord vehicle manufacture, then gear making for wind turbines (Pgh, PA; then Cgo,IL). Now I am with the beleaguered automotive industry here in Canada) !!! Soon I might have a lot of time with discussion groups like this. ( I have never joined one before).

2,3,4,5. I have recently started for an Aeronautics shop in Helena, MT. My title is a working process, currently I am a Quality Assurance Analyst, but am more of a coordinator. I am in charge of internal audits, dealing with third party audits, and our quality manual. I have only been in quality for less than a year, working, studying, and training non-stop. Before, I was in the civil construction industry, traveling all over the country working on projects.
6. I am very eager and intrigued in the aerospace industry and quality in particular.
7. I am learning and trying not to have a bias opinion, but I agree with another blogger that upper management is only concerned with "quality “during the ramp up of an external audit.

Dear All,

My name is Frans Jones, and I my job title is Quality Control Manager. I am in the Corporate Travel Industry, assisting corporate and goverment clients to manage their local and International travel arrangements, and ultimately of course their travel spend.

My company is South African Magic Travel Centre, based in Pretoria, South Africa. I have recently been appointed to this position, in our newly created Quality Department. I have been in operations for twenty years.

I think what sets me apart is that I asked my wife to marry in 1988, and kept on asking until she said yes in 2008. We went to the South of France last year for our honeymoon.:lmao:

I have my reservations about the quality world, and know far too little to make even the most basic of any comments. I am in the process of learning.:truce:

I'm relatively new to quality management so I think I'll be making use of the Cove quite a bit.

Hi,

I've just recently stumbled across this forum and I have to say - it looks very impressive (and I've barely scratched the surface yet). Good work and I'm looking forward to delving a little deeper over the coming days/weeks/months!

1. Name: Mick Green
2. Job Title or explanation of what you do: Quality Assurance Officer
3. Industry you're in or have been in: Local Government
4. Company you work for and location: Wigan Council Environmental Services Department (Based in Wigan, Lancashire)
5. Length of time in quality function: Current role: 9 months. In total: 19 years.
6. Something personal that sets you apart: I'm not sure that it sets me apart (I'm sure many others share the same view) but I like to strip everything down to basics in order to get the message across. Nothing frustrates/annoys me more than techno-babble.
7. Your pet peeve in quality (pet peeve is a minor annoyance that can instill a great level of frustration): People viewing quality as simply possessing a file containing some procedures / work instructions. It's so much more than that.
8. If you could change the world of quality, what would you do? Following on from the previous 2 answers, educate people that quality is a far more holistic pursuit than most of them realise, whilst ensuring that any communication / detail is presented in a straight-forward, easy to understand manner.

Hi,
My name is Pam and I do not know how to post yet. I have questions to ask.

USP 1043 perfectly defines our product as an ancillary material. We are registered to ISO9001 and ISO13485. However, our product is not well defined as a medical device. It is a microcarrier to grow cells on. According to USP 1043 we should be cGMP. I am confused. Our product never reaches the end user. It is discarded when the cells are harvested. Are we required to register with the FDA? Must we be cGMP? Will cGMP fit in well with an ISO quality system?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Pam

Hi.
I am a part owner in a family business with about 27 employees. I have been drafted to take over all the quality responsibilities. I have been learning on the job for about a year now.
We make low-tech, in vitro medical devices. While I find the field of quality at times interesting (no offense to those of you who make it your career, my circuitry is just not set up that way), I am finding that much of the documentation serves the big manufacturers and holds the little manufacturers to an unfair burden. Basically, the paperwork needed is so extensive that unless you can make a million dollars in sales on a product, it is not worth the work. How disappointing to think how many small groups of people could benefit from products that are never produced.

Anyway, as I upgrade our systems I have benefitted from reading other's discussions in this forum. I am headed to the MD&M conference in Anaheim in two weeks for my first dip into intensive quality studies. Any recommendations?

Thanks.

ReluctantQuality,

You have a small operation so keep the documentation to a minimum. The goal is to meet product standard, keep variation low and customers happy. In a smakll organization that can be done with a minimum of documentation.

The big organizations need the big documentation to ensure the work is done in a consistant and predictable manner to a standard created far from the production floor. In a small organization the person doing the work may have created or input to the work standard.

Concentrate on the records side. Concentrate on the process controls.

Dakota Jackrabbit

I understand. Often it appears the big guys are asking for paper for the sake of more paper. Out here on the Plains we try to explain that there are too few trees out here to be wasting paper. That is usually only good for a chuckle.

You will have to eet your customer's needs for documentation. Just try to keep it as simple as possible on the procedures side. I saw one quality manual (policy and procedures) to ISO9001:1994 that was only 17 pages. The exernal audior for their registration held it out as a positive example.

Then keep good complete records on the design and production side.

I hope this doesn't come across as negative, but I've always regarded trouble shooting, within the scope of quality control, as closing the stable door after the horse has bolted. Corrective action though, doesn't sound as "romantic" or macho as trouble shooting. :notme: and a :D

Just think how great it would be if the money and time spent on trouble shooting was used to build in quality to avoid the necessity for it.

Sadly though, there is a lot of truth in Murphy's Law :mg:

I might be misunderstanding you, but when you write "no experience" do you mean new to an auditing career or new to industrial manufacturing?
Is it possible to be a good auditor without practical experience, or will it all be text book theory?

8. If you could change the world of quality, what would you do? Change the perception to be a positive, not a negative.--I stole this one from above, but I agree with it.

Hello everyone, I have just discovered this forum, and I'm really lovin'it!!
My name is Abderrahman, 24, from Morocco(North africa)
I've just got my degree of engeneer in food Industry and safety, and, I will shortly begin my first job as a quality manager in fish-processing factory.
I was first interested in quality because it's linked to all the departements of a business. It also provides this abbility to do IMPROVEMENT all over the place.
So, during my studys, I've been practicing quality (in the field) for almost 9 months, I know it's not too much, but i've learned a lot about this discipline (QMS, audit, ISO9001, 14001 & 22000, SPC,....).
My pet peeve in quality would be, euuuuuhhhhh....., maybe the abundance of documents, at a point, we should be really very very very very organized or we would be lost, with all documents circulating.
Change the world of quality, for me, maybe, focus more on cost reduction, a very interisting area this discipline. that's a
beginner's point of view.
Sorry, my english is not very good, I know for sure that I've commited a lot of mistakes in the texy above.
I'm very glad being part of your community, VIVA The Elsmar Cove Discussion Forums!:D

Don't worry about missing one or two words in English - if you don't understand something, do not hesitate to make a post and ask for an explanation. If some of us don't understand what you mean, we won't be shy about asking for clarification.

We're all here to learn and you can't learn if you lurk without posting because you are afraid to appear "unknowing."

The Quality guru, W. Edwards Deming, was very clear when he said, "REMOVE FEAR!"

8. If you could change the world of quality, what would you do? Make it user-friendly and easy to understand, it shouldn't be technical and that DOCUMENTED records is a MUST (I am saying this because I have actually met people in quality who don't think documents are important - they think as long as they know it no one else needs to and it's all in their head if they need it)

I grew up in 4 countries before the age of 18, still hold the passport of my birth country but only have lived there 3 years of my life (not counting the annual visits of 2 months or less at a time). I identify more with 2 of my Southeast Asian host countries, because I grew up in that region for over 13 years of my life, than my birth country which I don't feel much connection to besides my extended family.

Hello, My name is Marc Bassler.
I am a Manufacturing Engineer for more than 30 years. I have worked for small job shops and large corporations such as Harley Davidson here in Milwaukee.
I currently work for a larger job shop called MetalCut products in South Milwaukee. I specialize in CNC machining. I have worked with Quality departments for most of my career.
I love to sail and play golf. I am very interested in financial markets and investment vehicles.
My pet peeve with quality is QA personnel that focus on paperwork and proceedures but can't make it work day to day. I just wish we could work better together to help shop personnel do there job better with less effort!
I look forward to working with this group.

We have an opportunity to supply some product to a company that ships their product overseas as well as domestic. We have sent samples to our customer and have been approve. Now they are asking that we have a PED coertification in order to supply this product to them on a regular basis. We have several plants which are ISO certified, but do not have a PED certificate. The plant that produced the samples are not ISO certified, but have a QMS management system in place. This plant is UL approved and has audits often.

Is it possible to obtain a PED certification with a QMS management system? IF not, is it possible to get the PED certification added to one of the other plants ISO registration and run the product there?

I have printed out the "PED overview", but need these questions answered.

Thank you for your time.

I am very interested in all of what is happening in the Quality Assurance/Control, Lean Six Sigma arena, where this is all going, how it is working and how it isn't, where everyone wants to go from here.

I have been in the Marketing Research business for 30 some years much of which has been in the Customer Satisfaction rarea.

I am currently an independent consultant focusing/incorporating Lean Six Sigma approaches, integrating my CS work that equates to building The House of Quality/Quality Function Deployment and then carrying out Kaizen Events, etc. implmentation to the shop floor level.

I developed a methodology back in 1993 that looks at the entire company and then trees down to the individual employee level within individual departments, all linking back to Customer Needs and Requirements. A Total Operations Performance Systems (TOPS) approach. While utilizing much of what is Six Sigma/Lean, my approach interjects the ability to respond to individual customers (Mass Customization), so the entire approach, when it touches customers, is not completely regimented and check list oriented in Sales and Service Processes, for instance. Nissan and Infiniti adopted this approach back in 1995 and are still using it.

Am I correct in understanding you're looking for help in circumventing official requirements? :notme:
I'm intrigued by how cryptical the question is and what this "mysterious" material is
Personally I'd ask the people that stipulate the requirements as, if it really is a violation, there probably is a reason.

Well I guess in wanting to use material from an unregistered supplier, yes I'd have to agree that I'm looking to circumvent the requirements. The material is vermiculite...yep, dirt. The kind that we need to use for the process to run correctly just isn't available from an ISO supplier. We are trying to lead the supplier into certification but it's not a definite. In the meantime, have you tried to explain to the "big three" that you need to change something?

No problem. It just gets sorta hard to find information when 'business' topics are carried out at length in the 'Introductions' thread. Finding things in the forum 'works' much better if a thread is started and the discussion carried out there.

Hi Clayton,

Welcome to the Cove. I am from the materials testing world and your comment about automating everything interested me because I dont hear this too often from the US.

My company (Zwick) manufactures robotic testing machines and if we can be of any support to you in your quest to completely automate physical testing then please give us a call with no obligation whatsoever.

We have installed hundreds of robotic testing systems worldwide.

Best regards,

David Phillips

Sorry but I can't resist this - "It doesn't say much for your co-workers" :D
This was written with my tongue in my cheek, as I'm certain you didn't mean it to be understood as I just implied.

I suggest you look at thread 'Sampling Evidence requirements - Pursuing AS9100' Are you really willing to knowingly accept defective parts?

I'll take a look at that thread.

To be more specific, we sell parts in large volumes. Each lot is typically greater than 50M and it's not uncommon to ship hendreds of thousands, or millions of parts. When shipping large quantities, we almost always encounter some percentage of defective parts. I would like to know what AQL or PPM we need to implement across the board (or possibly different programs for different customers depending on their requirements). Of course I don't want to accept any defective parts, but in our business, a certain percentage of defects is inevitable. My goal in starting this program is to build quality into our suppliers' manufacturing process, therefore decreasing quality problems once parts arrive to our warehouse or to our customer.

Sorry to be so lengthy...

Thanks! This (Why does my Customer have to audit me if I am TS16949 Certified? ) might be an interesting topic to raise in the business forums - think about starting a thread if you'd really like to know what folks from both sides of the question think.

My first question to narrow the focus:
Do they audit to the Standard or are they looking specifically at processes affecting product you make for them?
