I may be showing my ignorance here, but I've never heard of this being taught at any college in any country. Nebraska may become the "Japan" of the USA ;)
Good luck - it should be a "must" at all colleges that have any connection with business life. :applause:
Chasbo 12th March 2009, 02:44 PM Gordon:
Thanks for the note, there are a few schools in the US with Quality degrees, we are the only one in Nebraska and I am proud to run the program.

Rom1963 13th March 2009, 03:42 PM Hello All.
Worked 14 years for a major US based chemical company. Represented maintenance at various internal and external audits. Was site rep on business unit's global maintenance and reliability team. Implemented SAP based CMMS with supporting work processes, procedures and instructions. System also did QC calibration schedules.
Cool site. Lots of stuff. Gotta have those references. You may not have to know something, but you have to be able to know where to look it up.
Trying to come up with a financial internal control year-end review checklist for a non-profit organization. I say review instead of audit because lack of accreditation of reviewers. Will post thread requesting help on that topic elsewhere.

ashujanu 20th March 2009, 06:13 AM Hello everybody,
1. Name: I am Ashwini (an Indian from Mumbai) who is MR for the Company. We are going in for ISO 9001:2008 certification.
2. Job Title or explanation of what you do; As such I am working as a Secretary doing the normal and routine secretarial work.
3. Industry you're in or have been in & 4. Company you work for and location: My firm is a merchant trading firm dealing in various industrial segments. We have got various divisions. We are located in Mumbai, India.
5. Length of time in quality function: We thought for going in for ISO 9001 certification in the month of May 2008. Seriously started working on it in last week of August 2008 and got our first issue of Quality Manual and Central Procedure in the month of October 2008. Alongwith this, there are quality plans for each divisions. We got our first initial audit (stage-1) in second week of March 2009 - which wnet quote ok. So, you can see it has been a long and lengthy process. We didn’t know what we were getting into. Just waiting for the certification part to get over.
6. Something personal that sets you apart:
7. Your pet peeve in quality (pet peeve is a minor annoyance that can instill a great level of frustration)My main worry is there are only 3 divisions which we have taken for certification, out of which 2 divisions are creating lot of hassels.. There are major problems - some of which are
Attitude problem between the executives
EGO between the executives,
not understanding nor caring / bothering to understand what is QMS and what are its requirement of QMS. You will never guess what stupid answers they give when you ask them anything about the QMS. Very simple things also they do not know. And these people are in higher position in the company. do not want to utilize it for something which they consider an idle work.
Just blindly following what is told to be done. Worried what will happen during the main audit. I am getting nightmares just thinking about it.. It creates a bad impression on the company if we don’t get the certification.
8. If you could change the world of quality, what would you do?: Usage of less technical language.. That means to write simple things in simple words...
Bye

Your point 7. is unfortunately a universal problem. If you occasionally need to let off steam I'd imagine this was a good place to do it. I'm pretty sure you'd get some advice.
... and on to Point 8. I couldn't agree more. I often think that most "instructions" are written by lawyers or people who have never ever done what they're telling others to do.
KISS = Keep It Simple Stupid - an excellent motto.
I've notice how many even here in The Cove use abbreviations, and assume everybody else know what they stand for. Have I just written a pet peeve? :notme:

Amen, brother. I served as a QC and Prod Assurance Mgr for +10 years and one day requested the Design Manager's position. First thing I told my young designers and engineers; if you do not know how it's made or the processes needed to produce a good part then you cannot design. Quite the eye openning experience for most. The crew's improved capability for first time design increased substantially. A designer's life speaks to correct GD&T usage. It helps if you know how it's gonna' be made.

Don´t worry Demetrio, your English is MUCH better than our Russian !
3. Automotive industry, I think (:)), if you can identify Russian vehicles (Niva, Volga) as VEHICLES.
We still have some Lada´s and Niva´s running here in Brazil. The Niva´s are especially used for 4x4 rallys !
seamus26 25th March 2009, 11:53 AM Hey, everyone. I stumbled in here totally by accident, but you seem to be a knowledgeable group. Hopefully I can learn a thing or two. I've been programming CMMs for nearly eighteen years now and seem to have inadvertently accumulated the body of knowledge in the quality field that goes along with that as well. I earned my CQT back in '94, but never went any further. I really dig the CMM thing. It keeps me thinking and keeps me away from that salaried position, which around here is a lot like painting a target on your chest. So bear with me while I get my feet wet and any pointers are appreciated. If you could now point me to the corner where all of the CMM geeks hang out together to make Star Trek jokes I'd be much obliged.

Quality, Health, Safety, Environment and Integrated Risk Management - you can't have one without the others in my opinion, and this would provide an opportunity to streamline and simplify, leading to less confusion amongst the masses. But I'm relatively new to the game so who knows how I would answer twenty years from now.

So here I am on April Fool's day to learn more.:)

Quality Engineer with specialization in part failure, gauge design, CMM
12 years with Cummins Engines in Rocky Mount, NC
My entire life has been dedicated to quality.

My biggest annoyance is people who get into quality because they think it is an easy laid back position.
The next big evolution in quality is vision systems. They will become like spell check is to word processing.

I'm the software developer for STETFS. I manufactured thread gages and all kinds of threading products since 1960. I'm retired. I sell STETFS to keep myself busy.
I would like Wayne and Southern Girl to contact me about the problems their having with my software. My telephone number is listed at the top line in all STETFS programs. I will help anyone with my software for free. I see where most people who have a problem do not complete the install correctely. I offer unlimited technical support and can be reached at any time of day.
All questions and suggestions are welcomed pertaining to my software.
Let me know if I can help you.
R.J.L.
Admin note: Several people here were discussing STETFS software. I'm not sure which thread(s), but it is in accordance with the TOS that if people are discussing specific software, especially if they are having problems or have negative comments, the author or company has a right to respond.

QualityGuy2 16th April 2009, 02:56 PM Hi my company is thinking about getting ISO certification, but we have a good quality program now and are very disciplined when it comes to documentation and for us, I think the ISO tag would only be something to attract new customers, BUT I am really afraid that all of the extra documentation and auditing will lead to more problems than benefits. Does anyone have any input on this. The only link I could find in a quick search was for this site talking about ISO as a selling point which it probably would be for my company, since we have already established our own procedures and documentations. What other benefits would ISO bring???
Marc 16th April 2009, 04:06 PM Hi my company is thinking about getting ISO certification,
I think it depends on your company's mission

R.J.L. 16th April 2009, 04:12 PM Hello,
:2cents:
I'm R.J.L.
I'm a retired thread gage manufacturer.
I developed STETFS for my company's use starting in 1985.
I'm 69 years old and have work with screw threads since 1960.
I know several people who are ASME members of the B1 committee.
Several programs were added to STETFS for ISO thread standards.
My worst nightmare is the Odd/Even rounding that was adopted years before computers were around. I and many members of the ASME committees have tried to get that removed so that the actual formulas will provide the correct answers when rounding down by computer.
I did manage to have STETFS do Odd/Even rounding after years of programing. According to ASME B1.30 they were suppose to use standard rounding in ASME B1.1 2003, but I found several diameters that still use that method.
Note! Tell me that the Minor Diameter formula on UN external threads is correct in ASME B1.1 1989 and ASME B1.1 2003. For years I've told ASME and members of the committee that their using the Internal Thread Minor diameter formula for the UN external thread minor diameter. That is wrong! You cannot mate two same diameters together.
I would like to hear from somebody about the UN External thread minor diameter formula. It seems that I'm the only one that found that out.
I also would like to see how they arrive at P.D. tolerances on gages of all classes. Why don't they publish the formulas so engineers can determine tolerances without having to lookup tables. ISO standards are the worst of Standards.
Let me know if I can be of help.
R.J.L.

Now there's a thread opening for you :D
Now that is an opening....
I'm all for people making things to 'spec', after all that's what the customer wants :) however, the only niggle I've got (and it is a small niggle) is that people who 'just' meet spec aren't 'that' interested in what they are doing (based on my own experiences) they are only doing the minimum....
I want to see people who are looking at/for continual improvement, PDCA... not just 'meeting spec'...
There is a fine line but some people just talk it, some walk it, some run, I prefer to run with it....

stripey 5th May 2009, 10:00 AM Hi All,
I am Greg a Group Quality Manager for a UK Office Products Supplies / Distribution organisation. I have worked in Quality for 11 years now in various industries such as Custom Compounding, Heavy Engineering, Automotive Assembly and Industrial Manufacture.
I see Quality as the means to improve efficiency and build a solid business skeleton in order to maintain strength and ensure continued existence. My issue with the Quality function is that it can be seen to prevent work being done by the unenlightenable in Manufacturing .
To change the world of Quality I would build a time machine to show the way things can be if you conform to the agreed process / and consequently if you fail to conform... :frust:
I have joined here to get some good examples / ideas of what to have in and how to present the core processes as I build a system from scratch - bring on the best practice.
Greetings and Salutations to all...
Greg

Hmmm. What if "all mankind" doesn't agree with what you consider "quality of life"? :notme: "You can ........ some of the time, but not all of the ...... all of the time". ;)
Im So Openminded 5th May 2009, 02:18 PM Thanks for the feedback.
I look at qualityof life in a more holistic approach. It all involves your perception of what deem as quality and the impact it has on the attributes involved in your life. If implementing quality tools improves the way you live your life then kudos:agree1:, it works, and if not, please go back to the drawing board:nope:
:)
phil79 6th May 2009, 09:12 AM Hello All,
As suggested, a brief intro since I've been wondering about the forums for a couple of months:
My name is Phil Bromley and I've been involved in quality for about 4 years.
I work for SGR Consulting Services (about 3 months now) and now specialise in developing management systems for 3rd parties, including the NHS. Previous experience in military comms and medical devices as technical manager and felt like a change from project management (although I still do alot of this). I'm based in Kent, UK.
At the moment, the most frustrating area for me is seeing companies that I know don't work to their systems, and in fact flaunt them, pass external audits through a couple of days of hefty pre-work and some cover-ups.
But that's their loss really.
Anyway, that's about it and so far a big thank-you to all those on here as I've found some of the opinions on methods quite enlightening!
Cheers
Phil

This isn't a dig at you Phil, but to all those that write something like, "I've been involved in quality for about 4 years" or whatever, just as you did. How does that compare with the folks that think "quality" should be something everyone should be invloved with 24/7/365 all their lives? :notme:
Could it be that those that work with "quality" see only bad quality and think more about that than those that actually do the "real work" (I apologise in advance but take that with a grain of salt) see mostly good rather than bad quality?
Someone once said to me, "Of course you find faults. It's all you look for" That taught me to praise the good stuff ;)
Re the second part of the quote - why don't auditors catch these companies? Maybe the right questions don't get asked often enough and the work in the "field" concentrates too much on the "wrong" facts and documentation?
Agnes79 6th May 2009, 12:21 PM Hello, forum...

Thanks for the thoughts Gordon. I completely agree that quality 'should' be something people are involved with, and think about, all the time. Learning to praise the positive and focusing on improving and learning from the 'bad stuff' is something I believe in and try to promote.
Maybe I took the question posed at the start of the thread too literally (having not read fully the previous 400 odd pages maybe the meaning of this question has changed slightly)! Perhaps it should read - "i've worked in a quality function for 4 years, but actually it has been part of my working life for 8 years".
Re the second part of the quote - why don't auditors catch these companies? Maybe the right questions don't get asked often enough and the work in the "field" concentrates too much on the "wrong" facts and documentation?
Why indeed? It is easy to hide what you don't want people to see or find, but what is the point in running the system (apart from to have the 'badge') if you are not going to use it for what it is designed to do?
posita 7th May 2009, 12:07 AM I have really gotten a lot out of this forum and all of you who participate. I was curious, though, who all of you are and what you do. How about letting us know a little bit about you and your background?
Sorry folks, couldn't come and post in earlier. Quite Frankly, Elsmar Cove remained on my mind all these days, probably because of its unusual name....but more because on my first visit here, after going through several postings, I realised that you folks are quite friendly and helpful.
1. Name
Ram
2. Job Title or explanation of what you do
The job title doesn't have much to do with my actual work functions. But here it is any way:
Senior Research Fellow.
I'm compiling a book on 11 years of environmental audit publishing by my organization
AND
this month onwards, responsible for bringing out a web newsletter on environmental auditing in the world, basically news clippings on various subjects of use to environmental auditors, and summarizing of environmental audit guides and reports
APART FROM THIS
I've enrolled in the University of Bath's (UK) interactive (Online) International Environmental Management Associateship (IEMA) course
3. Industry you're in or have been in
Have carried out socioeconomic research on coffee plantations (for my Master's), way back in 1996-97, then went on to rainwater harvesting before settling on irrigation management and irrigation history (initially, for an M Phil in Environmental Studies), in which field I worked 7 years. Then decided, I was rather bored and was fed up seeing polluting industries, hospitals and households wherever I went. Wanted to do something about it, when I met the recession head on! 8 months without a job.........finally found this one and quickly realized environmental audit was the right thing for me.
4. Company you work for and location
WITTS (No, not your wit's end!) - stands for Waterfall Institute of Technology Transfer, it's a non-profit which carries out scientific and industrial research for the Indian government, mainly in the areas of documentation, publishing and training - works on environmental auditing, accounting, certification & justice, biotechnology, intellectual property rights & patents, innovation in funding research to small and medium industries. Has worked in the past on rural development and marine tech, too.
Located in New Delhi, India.
5. Length of time in quality function
In the current post? Since September 2008.
Total work experience before entering this field: 8 years
6. Something personal that sets you apart
I don't outright judge people. I try to first learn as much as I can about them to then understand why they do things in their own manner, so that if a problem were to crop up one day, I could mediate to find the besty solution for all parties involved.
7. Your pet peeve in quality (pet peeve is a minor annoyance that can instill a great level of frustration)
Can't stand intolerance
8. If you could change the world of quality, what would you do?
See to it that work shirkers (kaam chor in hindi, literally work thief) are made accountable for their acts - by tying performance and output to salary.
:thanx: for this opportunity to let you know more about myself. Hope I didn't bore or irk you.

8. If you could change the world of quality, what would you do? pushy no-it-all Auditors :D
I'm trying to figure out if that's a subtle play on a word or a spelling mistake :D If it's the former then it's good.
no-it-all auditors that say "no" to as much as possible or
know-it-all auditors that think they know everything
No doubt - both types are annoying :tg:

decipher 14th May 2009, 09:48 PM Hi there,
I'm really blessed and thankful for this superb (insert positive adjective) website that is a wealth of learning articles. So here's a bit about me:
1. Decipher - (I'm a bit shy, ppl call me by my surname Mr. Ooi) haha it's like hollering isnt it.
2. I am taking the initiative to restructure the company I'm working for (on my own spare time), in terms of streamlining the forms used, procedures, work standards, and the work flow of processes from scratch.
3. Semiconductor (Japanese company), currently Automotive (multi-tiered depending on product)
4. China
5. Not officially in the quality dept. But involved for 3 years now getting a feel and some simple workout in quality.
6. I'm very detailed, I am a strong advocate and believer in standardization of processes, believe very much in practical forms, checklists, Process/Work flow charts, metadata used in software management (ERP, etc). I ask Loads of questions (relevant or irrelevant)
7. Unrealistic/unreasonable customer requests. i.e. a dimension which is unimportant is forced to be achieved even though it does not cause the slightest difference in asthetics, funtionality and safety. People with negativity/pessimism without even wanting to understand more about something.
8. I'd change myself first before changing others.
JimBrown 15th May 2009, 05:24 AM 1. Name- that's easy... Jim Brown and no I'm not the actor / football player nor am I James Brown the singer, although James is my real name

6. Hm nothing really... need to think on this one
7. Playing the numbers- doing things just eg to keep the auditors happy, flying a nice ISO flag outside, but it really hasn't got to the heart
8. Somehow, make quality "real" not just a lip-service thing, see 8!

2. Job Title or explanation of what you do: Water/Wastewater Compliance Coordinator
3. Industry you're in or have been in: Currently working for a municipality in the Engineering/Operations department - left an environmental/engineering consulting company to come here!
4. Company you work for and location: Municipality located in the Niagara Region, Ontario, Canada
5. Length of time in quality function - 6 years
ISO 9001:2000 Management Rep from '03 to '07,
Quality Assurance Officer for a quality program in conformance with a Certificate of Approval for Industrial Sewage Works from '03 to '09,
Quality Assurance Officer for a quality program to support Certificates of Authorization, issued by TSSA, in conformance to the Boiler and Pressure Vessels Codes (B31.1 and B31.3) from '03 to '09 (Yup - all three systems at the same time - and we received accrediatation for ISO and TSSA in the same year - within 3 months of each other!!)
since April 1st - yup April Fools Day - I am in charge of the QMS for a municipality - as of this year, all municipalities in Ontario that supply drinking water to their residents MUST have a QMS in conformance with the Drinking Water Quality Management Standard (which is a mix of ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and HACCP) in place - submitted QMS for accreditation on May 1st - and waiting to hear back from our auditor to see if we recieve an interim accreditation while we work on implementation - site audit happens 12 months after they perform the "systems audit" and accept our documentation. It's a bit different process than what I'm used to with ISO and the TSSA - and because there are a lot of "non-quality" folks being thrust into the quality role at their municipality- there's a lot of uncertainty, confusion and mis-understanding... my boss and the head of water/wastewater were both shocked when I told them that the external auditor would want to talk to someone besides me when the come for our registration audit!!!
6. Something personal that sets you apart: Since 1993, long before getting into quality (which until now, has not been my full-time job), I was involved in researching zebra mussel control methods, monitoring zebra mussel populations for industries, and killing zebra mussels for industries! Oh - and I have a BSc - although I stopped taking science in Grade 10!!
7. Your pet peeve in quality (pet peeve is a minor annoyance that can instill a great level of frustration): Whenever a nonconformance is discovered, the first words out of management's mouth are "WHO did it?!?"
8. If you could change the world of quality, what would you do?: Make people understand that it CAN make their lives easier - if they stop resisting change!!

Wes Bucey 20th May 2009, 05:43 PM To all of our new members:
Welcome to the Cove:bigwave:, the premier community for sharing information about the Quality profession and, maybe even more importantly, for sharing information about how to get along in an organization without coming across as a "Kwality Kop," - a clown who enjoys playing GOTCHA to make himself feel superior instead of helping folks learn about quality as a tool to elate customers and improve the organization.

The whole production vs quality thing - yep - know exactly what you're saying - it's my biggest challenge here...kinda hard tho when the General Mgr is completely output oriented.

rivernck 21st May 2009, 12:40 AM Hi!
I'm rivernck, a Malaysian, working for a paint manufacturing company in Asia for 21years as an executive.
I'm 52yrs, married with a 15yrs daughter and a Christian.
My company is awarded with ISO 14000 and OHSAS 18000.
Recently my psychiatrist diagnose me having a anxiety depression, due to my fear of my immediate boss.
I'm sure ISO or OHSAS has a part on mental health and would most appreciate if someone would kindly lead me to this part.
I would like to extract this part as a supporting request for a transfer to another department, to be away from my abusive boss!
Please help.
Thank you.
