Greg316 25th May 2009, 04:38 PM Hi to everyone at the Cove.
1 / My name is Greg and I'm finding some very good information here at The Cove.
2, 3 and 4/ I work in the medical industry for a small company here in the UK.
5/ I have never had a job that focuses on quality- well not until a year or so ago when I decided I wanted to bring our QMS up to ISO 13485 standards and there's a way to go yet. It's not our products but the documentation side that needs a tweak or two (or three).
6/ Something personal...hmm.. I've got a lovely Samoyed dog who walks my legs off, both morning and evening.. something else personal..I have a wife and daughter, luckily they don't need walking.
7/ Pet peeve - does there have to be quite so much documentation ? I'm starting to think I'll be watching Star Trek on the television and I'll see their Quality Manual sitting on a shelf by the captain's chair on the bridge.
8/ Change the world of quality... quality would be integrated - properly- into products and companies. There wouldn't be a dependence on documentation, but the enjoyment and satisfaction of providing a well made product or service.
Aung Myint 26th May 2009, 12:20 AM Hello forum owner and all
My name is Aung myint am working at a ISO consulting company in Thailand for 10 years. I found this forum since 10 years ago and have been getting every information I need for my job. Thank you so much for the help I got from you. IOU a lot.
newgravy 26th May 2009, 07:30 AM My name is sean the nickname comes from an old soccer joke, "why do they call you gravy?, because I was all over them  OK it was funny the first time 20 years ago!! I am a complete newby to the Medical Devices arena. I have recently taken on a role to look after the maintenance and engineering operations of equipment and facilities for a business being transferred.
Every time a look for help and inspiration google always has a cove link and someone usually has good advice to offer. Although I have bought the ISO standards and downloaded the main FDA documents there is always another question.
I would like to think that some time in the future I will be able to contribute to the forum. It seems somone is always looking for a good example of documents etc if I post some of mine it may help someone else.
Woman on a mission 26th May 2009, 10:15 AM Hi this is my first time here, found this site by chance as I have my SGS audit in Aug, and I need to find information.
I developed a medical device to control female incontinence. As I could not find a company to initially CE mark the product I became the manufacturer and went through all the steps. I must say SGS were extremly helpful, and very understanding that a one woman company needed a lot of guidance. Alas I have now managed to bring the product to market, next step is to keep ahead with the regulatory information which I hope to find people who are happy to help with information sharing. If anyone is starting out in the medical field I am happy to share information, as it isn´t easy starting out and lots to learn. If we can make that journey easier then why not help our when we can.

7/ Pet peeve - does there have to be quite so much documentation ? I'm starting to think I'll be watching Star Trek on the television and I'll see their Quality Manual sitting on a shelf by the captain's chair on the bridge.
To 6. Why don't the wife and daughter need walking? :D
To 8. That made me think ;) Enterprise is very advanced - I'm thinking "computer-wise". Would a company with intranet really need a Quality Manual (I'll bet most companies have dozens if not hundreds - if customers also want a copy) if all the information could be obtained on computers throughout the company? An abridged form could also be made available to customers on a "need to know" basis. It would certainly be the best way to ensure that the latest udate (revision) was always available. Is this already in action in any company or is it "food" for a thread?
Gordon Clarke 26th May 2009, 01:48 PM I wrote 8. when I actually meant 7. of course
It's getting late and I am on -1 GMT :o

rmarkham 29th May 2009, 10:21 AM Just joined. Name is Ralph Markham. I am Director of Facility Support for a tertiary care hosptial in Canada. I came to healthcare 18 months ago by way of 30+ years in retail and manufacturing and I love it here. Really have landed in the right place. My job title does not truly reflect the essence of my work. I am a lean six sigma practitioner and the opportunites presented by healthcare are incredible. We have our entire hospital abuzz in lean transformation, and we are only a year into the journey. We hit our first valley of paim at about 6 months and it has been improving since. My pet peeve are those folks who stay so closed minded. Their professional lives have lost meaning in their need for sameness and their misguided belief their process are already "perfect". A frustrating group.

Another version of "If it ain't broke, don't try and fix it". ;)
Maybe several automobile manufacturers (among many other businesses) should have tried thinking ahead instead of more of the same old same old?

Gordon Clarke 29th May 2009, 05:57 PM Genral disdain for formal systems in the repair industry
I can hear the Texan drawl in that :D
Apart from that I'm trying to wrap my head around your remark. Surely when possible there should be a red thread for repair procedures in any industry? Otherwise it'll be like reinventing the wheel over and over again ;) Maybe I'm misunderstanding what you mean.
Rashmi001 29th May 2009, 06:26 PM Hello everyone,
I am a Blood Bank manager and in last 16mths have also taken on the quality officer role for my department, in a U.K hospital. Developing a Quality system to comply with the Blood Safety and Quality Regulations Act has cetainly been a challenge, especially since I have no prior experience in this field. However I seem to be really enjoying this 'quality stuff' and hope to learn a lot more from folk on this forum.

8. change the definition of "Quality"
7. sounds like good ol' common sense :D so why not? Of the two choices I prefer "Management System".
8. Which of the many definitions would you change - and to what? I'll bet you've given it some thought :notme:
Anyway, both these thoughts are something I'd like to give my :2cents: to if you start up a thread :D

You and Susan, both being Texans, could maybe get together :D. I'd be really curious as to how you'd combine quality and dollars  I've always regarded a "bargain" as getting good quality for a lower price than normal, but how does that affect your "peeve"?

The lack of understanding of quality shown by our engineers coupled by management's lack of concern with engineering's lack of understanding.

Since ISO 9001, AS-9100 and NQA-1 are all essentially the same I would have one standard with proper emphasis on the requirements depending on the importance to safety.

longnhanvo 16th June 2009, 01:43 AM Hi all,
My company has strong HSES( Heath, safety, environment, security) system but quality system of our company is weak. I am so confused if we should set up integrated system for my company or not? What benefit will we have if we apply integrated system for our company? Because some companies get certification for system as a coat, our Board of Management don't want to do that because it is waste time and don't bring any benefit for us.
ADMIN EDIT: Please reply to this question here: Integrated System: ISO 9001, ISO 14001, OSHAS 18001 (http://elsmar.com/Forums/showthread.php?t=34735)

:agree1: Congratulations and good luck! As a past non-traditional doctoral student (as if there is such a thing these days), I know the smarter students will gravitate to your experience. The others will damage their students - if they ever get hired. Be sure to read some of the comments in the Cove on analyzing journal articles. You will need to know the problems with those articles to get the most out of your experience.

Coincidentally [speaking of doctoral students in their 50s and even above], my wife and I were touring Cahokia Mounds in Western Illinois (near St. Louis) and met a woman archaeology professor on a dig with her graduate students. She gave us an ad hoc lecture about the site and had us talk with the students about their finds. While we were there, they turned up a stone ceremonial knife. While she and the students (and we) took a break from the sun under their canopy, we discovered during the casual chat she hadn't even started to graduate school until she was 56. She had been a court stenographer and was fascinated by a case she was transcribing having to do with archaeological relics and just decided to "go for it!"
Good luck on your quest and remember us as a resource for your students.

I'm working now in flexible packaging industry, I have 1 year with these guys and certainly I had have a dimensional shock with the timing and urgent sense!
I think that the worst part is to treat with the "Always have been like this!" it is really.....bah!
But I like the challenges and I think I have found one big. So I'm really motivated.
If I could change anything about quality world I think I will change the complexity to evaluate non parametric data in order to stablish a SPC. That's now my headache.

keithljelp 28th June 2009, 06:44 PM Hello,
I am Keith Jones and I am the QA Manager at Vertical Turbine Specialists in Lubbock, TX. Our vision statement:
"The world’s largest and most complete manufacturer of component parts for the OEM vertical turbine pump industry, dedicated to providing the industry with an economical, quality product in a timely manner!"
I have twenty plus years experience in quality in a wide range of industries; automotive electronics, plastic injection molding, compression and transfer molding of epoxy compounds, and the welding, machining, and stamping of metals.
I have three degrees; BSCS, MSMfg.Eng., and Ph.D. Industrial Engineering.
My specialty is statistical analysis and operations research and I use LaTeX and R extensively.
My pet peeve is the lack of formal quality training at most universities and I would require that all quality personnel get formal training before being "thrown into quality" and have to unlearn all the bad habits/ "wife's tails" thought to them by the "Old timers" who say"...we have done it this way for forty years."
I found Elsmar Cove Forum while doing research for a paper I am writing "The History and Mathematical Roots of Cpk Vs. Ppk".
I have found a lot of good information on the forum.

QM Mary 6th July 2009, 09:18 AM Hello to all the new folks:bigwave:
I agree that there should be a library of free AIAG publications.
That would so help the smaller 2nd tier companies that would have to review the standard etc. for one project. The cost of membership to AIAG is so high that the smaller companies struggle to get the copywrite new editions of anything. Maybe it would not have to be free maybe a small fee to use the library instead of the complete membership to join the AIAG.:agree1:

Some of you may have come here looking for answers to a specific question; others because they feel like they've been thrown in the deep end of the pool and need to learn how to swim just to survive.
We're here to help and provide the support you need to help you in your work and, in many cases, help you keep your sanity when it seems like everyone in your organization, even your entire supply chain, is conspiring to drive you over the edge.
For those few who already know lots and lots about quality and supply chains and clueless bosses, a very special welcome!:bigwave::bigwave: We're always looking for new folks to help elevate the profession to the respect and importance it deserves by helping less learned folks get into the loop.

5. Although it is a bit hard for me to believe, it is now over 20 years. Prior to that I was in teaching, and thought working with adults was going to be different. Silly me!
6. Worked for several of the original “Primes” (TRW, Rockwell, Hughes); got an early start in the ISO/AS9100 standards and was one of the initial AS9100 ‘experienced’ Lead Auditors (allowed to verify observed audits of those qualifying for AS9100 auditor/lead auditor status).
7. The lack of understanding of process among some professed quality individuals I have encountered along the way, both internal and external, and including some consultants that provide ‘cookie cutter’ non-value added service to their clients. Luckily that has been counter balanced by some extraordinary quality individuals I have had the privilege of encountering.
8. Encourage the understanding of the “QMS” standards (ISO / AS) as simply Business 101 and take the word ‘quality’ out of the equation. Use the standards as a business management process tool implemented to ensure meeting the customer requirements (big “Q” – it is everyone’s job folks – just do it right).

Charles Osenbaugh 13th July 2009, 12:07 PM Hello, All;
My name is Charles "Larry O." Osenbaugh. I coordinate QHS functions for OFI Testing Equipment, Inc., a small manufacturer of measuring and testing equipment which is used in the oil drilling industry. We are located in Houston, TX USA.
My bigggest peeve is the old mentality that responsibility for quality is solely owned by QA/QC. I guess I'm "preaching to the choir".
I visit mostly to see how others handle problems which are similar to my own.
Thanks,
CLO
Martys55 13th July 2009, 03:27 PM Hello All,
My name is Marty Swartz
I'm the Quality Director of a small aerospace company in nothwest Florida.
I was led to this site via a Google search for CAR and PAR (MS Access) databases.
So far I've seen a lot of areas that I can offer suggestions/help when I have time.
I'm still looking for a good starting Access DB w/reports if anyone has one they're willing to share. It's been a while (since '97) since I've used Access so I'm a little rusty. We just had our ISO audit and our CAR/PAR system didn't fair too well...:)

4. Company you work for and location = BASF
5. Length of time in quality function = 18 years
6. Something personal that sets you apart = :notme: just a normal guy, trying to get by...
7. Your pet peeve in quality = management of change has always been a big pet peeve or rather lack thereof...
Another pet peeve is when management makes a decision, it does not mean it is automatically / magically implemented. Some decisions require planning, continued support and execution to see them through to completion.
8. If you could change the world of quality, what would you do? = Contingency planning would be executed a little better as people move around the organization or leave the organization. And, while it may be nice to fantacize about Eloy's idea, it would not be practical without contingency planning...
8. If you could change the world of quality, what would you do?
I would hold Upper Management accountable for QMS implementation and effectiveness and if they do not want change I would take them out back and have them shot.!!!!!!!!!!

From the top of my head this made me think that perhaps "management" (I'm never sure when this is one person or a group) often regards the QM as steering and coordinating the "warring fractions" - oops, I mean the various departments - down the straight and narrow.
Years ago a guy I regarded as my mentor said, "Why have a guard dog and stand at the door yourself and bark?"
Assuming the QM has the ear of management and participates in top management meetings, then this would be the forum to (diplomatically) point out weaknesses and suggest how to improve and/or implement quality enhancements. I'm sure many QMs could delegate instead of feeling it was all on their shoulders.

I have been a Quality Manager for three years at a Tier One Automotive Supplier to GM and Chrysler. We provide forgings and precision machined parts. Also, I have been in Quality for about 20 years as a Quality Inspector, Quality Engineer, Senior Quality Engineer , and recently a Manager in the Manufacturing and Service Industries.
My pet peeve in Quality, some people in Quality only go through the motions and fulfill somewhat the requirements of the customer; never truly using the methodology of continuous improvement and using the customer requirements to their advantage to better Quality and the companies bottom line in the long haul.

I have many years experience in the construction industry but have only in the last 10-12 years focussed mainly on quality functions and have completed Lead Auditor training courses in ISO 9000-2000 as well as OHSAS 18000.
My favourate passtime is sailing, having sailed from South Africa to Canada some years ago.
Being in the Quality business, I have natural curiosity as to what contacts I will be making through this forum.

rickby 30th July 2009, 06:52 AM Hi,
My name is RJ and I'm from Ireland. I work for a company that manufacture medical devices and I am in charge of all aspects of Quality Assurance. I have an electronics background but have progressed more towards documentation control and quality assurance over the last number years. My pet peeve about Quality is that others look upon you as someone who will catch any mistakes made before the product goes out the door instead of saying to themselves that if I make this product error free then I have done my bit in helping someone who needs this product. I am looking forward to getting some sound information regarding regulatory aspects of Quality Assurance so that I can build up my knowledge base and from what I have seen so far in this forum, I have definitely made the correct choice in joining.:D

You don't have to retrieve it you just have to reference it - per P.O. # xyz - should do it. If it comes down legal issues or whatever the P.O. is the document that trumps all others. What in the world does a c of c actually do but take up space in a file cabinet? Get rid of them and the tree huggers will like me!

--JH-- 31st July 2009, 08:04 PM Hi! I'm Juan Hector Garcia, QMS/EMS Specialist at Dana Mexico Cardanes Plant, automotive tier1 supplier. Previously I've worked for Polaroid and some small businesses from the education, computers, and construction sectors. My current employeer is located in Queretaro City, Mexico, I've been here 13 years doing basically the same function.
Something that sets me apart from other people managing a QM or EM system I've known is that I belive zero nonconformities in a third part audit is a side effect, not a goal. You could say that's also my pet peeve.
I dream of quality as those special effects in the movies that are so real and seamless that you don't notice them, until you realize the scene couldn't have been done without them.
BTW, it's good to be here.
barbara lattimore 2nd August 2009, 09:26 AM Hello; Barbara here. I am now headed in a new direction.
I am contracting to a large company, this company has just bought out another company. They are both automotive manufactures. So, the bought company has been operating even while being bought.
The direction is to try to get us ready for Oct. ISO/TS audit.
It will be a challenge for me, I have been involved in audit preperatrions, internal audits, even revamping systems to prepare for audit (this one in 1992 for ISO).
The company I am working for is ISO/TS but the facility will not be under the umbrella. The bought company has been ceritified as well so that helps. I think the 1st thing to do is evaluate the bought companies QMS and go from there, the floor operations have NOT changed, basically all I can tell that has changed is the sign and logo.
This was just to say hello "RI"GHT" sorry.
Hope all are well.
Barb;)
howste 2nd August 2009, 10:38 PM This is probably the most viewed thread in The Cove as all want to meet the ”newcomers”. I’ve browsed through the search engine to see if anyone has touched on the following subject previously on a thread but can’t find anything comparable. I fully expect this contribution to be moved when it’s deemed to have been read by a suitable number of “old hands” as well as “newcomers”.
The two points that have always fascinated me most in introductions are:
7. Your pet peeve in quality (pet peeve is a minor annoyance that can instill a great level of frustration)
8. If you could change the world of quality, what would you do?
For number 7, there's this thread: My pet peeve - what is yours? (http://elsmar.com/Forums/showthread.php?t=35533)
For number 8, this one may be close: What would you change in your Quality department (http://elsmar.com/Forums/showthread.php?p=70810#post70810)

Congradulations on your new assignments.Since your earlier company is already TS certified you will be able to cope up with the new responsiblilities.Following are 6 steps in achieving TS for the new company.
1)Rewrite the manuals and procedures. This may involve just changing names.doc.nos. and dates from the Manual of your Ist company which is already TS certified.
2)Display SOP/work instructions on each machine and work area in the new organization.
3)Train staff on TSI6949 awareness,SPC,MSA,FMEA and internal audit.
4)Prepare process flow,FMEA and control plans for all products family wise. etc.,etc.

Mike Scott 8th August 2009, 11:21 AM Hi all. :thanks: for letting me join your site.
I am a QA/QC Manager for a new company registering for AS9100 recognition. I have worked in Quality all my life and enjoy it.
My pet peeve in quality is misinterpretation of code requirements, i.e., not enough, as well as, too much.
If I could change the world of Quality, I would dull a little more the side of the double-edge sword that Quality personnel occasionally run into.

Wes Bucey 9th August 2009, 02:48 AM Wow! Lots of interesting newbies!
If I can provide one bit of good news, it's this:
You have joined one of the best forums for getting answers you just can't seem to get anywhere else to those tough questions about quality and business, especially when it comes to advice about maneuvering through a minefield of tyrannical customers, stickler auditors, sneaky suppliers, untrained employees, and heartless/clueless bosses (much like the pointy-haired ones in the Dilbert comic strip.)

saintly 11th August 2009, 05:14 PM Hello, all! My name is Aileen.
The company I work for is a very small medical laser manufacturer in California. I have a host of titles right now including Document Control Coordinator, Quality System Coordinator, Internal QMS Auditor and I guess they are making me take over for our Quality Assurance Manager. That's why I'm here, I guess--trying to survive this!
As for my experience, I have very little to speak of. I have a degree in Music, but when you move to California from Michigan you take whatever job opens up, right? I took an internship here two years ago in Document Control. With no direction from Management I had to find something to occupy myself with, and it started with fixing the spelling and grammar of the QMS Procedures. But when I started finding holes and contradictions I took to studying ISO 13485, rewrote the system, and here I am today practically in charge of everything.
The information here has already been incredibly valuable, I hope I can contribute to the community!

6. Interests - winetasting, biking
7. I agree with many of you - Management says they want quality but really don't or the middle management wouldn't say "Good enough"
8. I think rotation would be good as stated above. I did notice in a previous company that the supervisors that shared an office with quality ended up being alot more quality minded.
This site is a great. Thanks to all who have helped me out already.:thanx:

6. Play guitar and raise water lilies! Got the "Greenraisin" tag in college when a friend started calling me that. I asked him why and he said, "Just how normal is a green raisin?" The rest is history!
7. My pet peeve is the lip service given to quality
8. If I could change the world of quality, I would REQUIRE rotation from operations and other functions through the quality organization or function. The best ops folks are the ones who've been through QS, QA, or QC, and the best QA folks have the scar tissue from ops!
My degree is in Business Administration.

Yankeee 13th August 2009, 01:57 PM I love this place! Thanks to those who have already been so nice to me. I can't stay away now - they'll all blame you.
They call me Yankee, but that was already taken, so I am Yankeee. More than 50% of the time I am called "Yankee" in real life too!
I am a Project Controls Consultant - usually I work as a Scheduler, but I can do other stuff too. My jobs are normally in the utilities (nuclear and fossil) industry or construction (T&D). I'm currently working in WI.
I'm a bit of a girly girl when it comes to my likes and taste, but only because I have been surround by MEN my entire life. I grew up with two brothers, had two sons and have almost always worked in male-dominated industries. My dog is a girl for a reason. We buy pink stuff!
My kids, my huband, my Harley and my scrapbooking room see me the most when I'm not working. That's about it!

GuyonFitzMiles 17th August 2009, 03:32 AM Hi everyone.
My name is Gerald. I am an environment officer with a facility management company in Abu Dhabi, UAE. Im relatively new in the company i work for (been around for a year now) and the reason for most of the head aches I am getting these days is because we are embarking on an ISO 14001 based EMS. At the moment I am just looking for ideas on how we can come up with a really good process for evaluating our aspects. This is a major problem as we are getting new projects regularly. As a result we are constantly evaluating the new aspects that come with the new projects and adding them to our aspects amd impacts register. This forum seems to be a good place to exchange ideas and get new perspectives from experts in the field so I had to join:D.
I guess what sets me apart is that I have to be one of the few (if not the only) Zimbabweans on this forum.
