ptrotter 31st August 2009, 02:38 PM Hello Mark,
AS9100 is very simular to ISO 9001, with more traceability. The most important thing that I have learned (32 years in Aerospace) is that when a company decides to go ISO, everyone thinks it's the Quality Manager's job to get you certified. Wrong!!! It takes an enormous effort from ALL of management to develop the system. I have told management in several companies that if you just want an ISO certificate to use as a placemet (with matching napkins) while you are having customers in, then you don't need me. ISO is a tool for improvement, and a good tool it is if used properly. Since you are just beginning to go down the ISO route, be firm on who is going to be the Prcess Owner, and have them create the process documentation. Your function is to make sure that the process is described properly and that it will support the ISO requirements. Good luck, have fun (just kidding) and feel free to contact me directly if you would like to have me express more angles on the subject. Certainly not angry, just been there. Paul,
PS, I have created ACCESS databases to support ISO, so if you would like a copy and understand ACCESS well enough to re-structure them to fit your needs, let me know, I'll send copies. Unfortunately, I'm busy enough during the day that I'm not able to provide a lot of support in ACCESS training.
Ponzelle Royster 31st August 2009, 03:25 PM Hello, I'm new to this site although I have used it occasionally to get some great information.
I am currently Director, QA/RA at a small medical device company and wear all the hats of all aspects of QA and RA. With more than 20 years in either position at large and now a small organization, the challenge is great. Small companies don't have the resources but have to comply and sometimes even the most standard parts of the quality system - like design control - are difficult to implement and get buy-in.
It is always comforting to know that there are other colleagues out there that share my quest for a compliant system. It is also good to have a forum that keeps up with the latest regulations, guidances, and standards.
While I will count on this forum for information, I will also share information as I have experienced almost all aspects of Regulatory and Quality Assurance.
Thanks for all your contributions.

5) I stopped counting the years in Quality... Now I just enjoy them > 19 years :)
6) My endurance and ability to get the job done and physical attention to the value added details that count...
7 and 8) My peeves: Management that says the "Q" word but never get up out of their chair to visit the workplace to see how well they are managing their company. My other peeve is the tarnish and stigma that is attached to the word "Quality" but I am working to fix the perception of Quality by winning over one person at a time and leading by example.

MLH57 4th September 2009, 10:01 AM Hi my name is Mick Haines and I am a Quality Engineer working within the aerospace industry. At work we have identified a need to update our training scheduler 'database' having found that the Excel Spreadsheet version we have been using has become corrupted and no longer works and is not up to date either. Having searched the internet I ended up within this forum and would like to try the database that was posted in here to see if that will provide the solution to our new managers.
Sherwin Ycay 6th September 2009, 01:04 AM Hello everyone,
I am Sherwin Ycay, 30 years old, Filipino National and currently working as Safety Engineer for a construction company in Abu Dhabi.
I am currently a graduate student of MSc in Occupational Safety and Health Management at Central State University of New York, Dubai Extension Campus, and stumbled upon this forum during my research about OHSAS 18001.
The discussion here in the forum regarding OSHMS has indeed helped me a lot in my presentation.
The pet peeve that I have found in my current company is the absence of QMS itself which is totally a shift with my previously ISO Certified employer in the Philippines.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Sherwin Ycay

Aside from quality my other passions are project management and information technology. I am frustrated with the inability of organizations to respond to the speed of change due to breaucratic controls. - Quality is more than just a byword ... it's a way of life. Too many American companies treat quality as an add-on, an attachment ... it's got to be embedded and become a part of the business culture to be fully successful.

ptrotter 10th September 2009, 07:10 PM How many Psychiatrists does it take to change a lightbulb?
Just one, but the lightbulb has to want to change.
We in Quality are here to look at the overall processes and identify the failings of ths system (not the people, of course). Yet when we do, we get the verbal (or non-verbal) response "Looks like a lot of work, forget it. It's been good enough so far".
After 33 years in Quality I am still amazed that for little or no cost we can make improvements that will pay off down the road. I believe that most of upper management is looking for todays bottom line, and somehow if we're still in business a year from now, THEN we'll think about it. That is also the recurring theme a year from now.
Good Luck, and if you come up with a Super Secret Magic Phrase, let us all know.

Petervan 21st September 2009, 11:01 PM Hello everyone,
my name is Pete.
Currently working as Quality Manager for a Defence supplier in Australia. Have been in this role for 2 yrs.
Previous to this role, worked in the Automotive industry for a tier 1 supplier for 12 yrs (Until they went bust)
Current employer is Chemring Australia, located in Victoria Australia.
Have worked in the Quality Management side for approx 6 yrs.
Something personal that sets me apart? - I dont care for excuses. But I do listen to those who offer or provide input into the solution
Pet peeve in quality is that is seems to be the responsibility of the quality manager, not everyone.
Change to the world of quality would be that we need to design the processes, not the product.:notme:

JRLambert 4th October 2009, 03:39 PM Everyone -
I'm Jon Lambert, a Quality Manager at a government test lab at Rock Island Arsenal here in Rock Island, Illinois. We're in the process of pursuing ISO 17025 accreditation for a number of measurements we perform and I'm personally assembling uncertainty computations for these measurements.
Being new to this forum, I'm particularly interested in locating informational sources and partnerships to assist with CMM, shock/vibration and transportation related proficiency testing. If anybody is already 17025 accredited and interested in partnering for transportation-related proficiency tests. Please let me know.
Thanks,
Jon
Miner 4th October 2009, 04:04 PM Welcome Jon,
We have several excellent contributors in the ISO 17025 forum. I am sure they will be able to help you.
Richard AK 5th October 2009, 09:53 AM Hi all
I work as a QA/QC Manager, for a company in South Africa, that manufactures and assembles parts for the motor industry. I have been involved with the QA/QC function for the last seven years and earlier this year took over management of the systems from the previuos incumbent, who was retrenched.
As well as being responsible for the QA/QC function, I am also responsible for the maintenance of our ISO14001 EMS System.
As a company, we have just completed our 1st 3 year cycle of TS16949 Certification and are due for our re-certification in about a week and a half so I am busy preparing for that.
While I enjoy my job, I get peeved off at people who pay lip service to quality and only apply the requirements when it suits them. The only other aspect of my job I do not enjoy is handling of warranty claims and customer rejects/complaints. People take huge chances and get very annoyed when you reject their claims.
Regards to all and I am sure that you will be hearing from me.

secretasianman 6th October 2009, 03:49 AM Hello,
My name is Art and its only my American name. I was born in Shizuoka-ken, Japan in 1953. I did good in academia. Most say I went all the way.
My past is all about learning and doing things to perfection. Sacrifices? Sure, months and years of lab and field work. Studying sciences, human factors, robotics and business.
The work I have done has been fulfilling and looking back, I have contributed to numerous Fortune 50 companies and the US govt.
I originally planned to retire at 45 but as luck would have it, I am straight oriented and the wives I have had took 50% or more. It doesn't matter because I am now through with pursuits of materials and into helping companies that I choose along the way. My current work is all encompassing but it still leave time to help out, gratis. My current project is a machine shop in the Bible Belt. It has tripled in volume and in gross income within a year and now I am considering ISO 9001:2008 compliant QMS for them.
With my contacts, I am certain that I can get them the contracts they require to exponential growth. I have worked with the small company for over a year and their quality acumen has become their trade mark. They are ready for the next level.
My strength is technical and combining organizational skills. I have worked with numerous mentors and have taught engineers and executives. I am always humbled by those who are enlightened enough to give of themselves to others and not ask to receive. Their fulfillment seems to be greater. After this company goes to the next level and I am confident it will, my reward is to take a year off sipping drinks with little umbrellas on them on sandy beaches as white as sugar. My dog Lexie, adopted from the Helen Woodward Animal Center in Santa Fe, California, my boat, sandals and a bunch of outrageous Hawaiian shirts! Of course it can all be a dream and I go to the next project!
I have been in teams or spear-headed troubled companies for assessments or venture start-ups at various stages of business development. I value my experiences and hope to learn from you all. Humbly, thank you.
Wes Bucey 6th October 2009, 04:09 AM Well, Art, I have a hunch your "secret asian man" heritage is no longer a secret. Thanks for a refreshing new take on our old and venerable tradition of introducing yourself. I hope you have time to provide help to a lot of our newbies trying to wend their way through the Quality maze BEFORE you retire to the white sandy beach with little umbrellas in your beverages.
If you do make that retirement, I'd like pina coladas when I come to visit and I'd be willing to drink them out of a Mason jar without umbrellas!;) I'm pretty sure I can convince my colleague, Akio Miura, from Tokyo to join us.
(If you want to serve our beverages in coconut shell halves, I am expert in opening coconuts with no muss, no fuss. I learned the technique when I spent a few months on the beach.)

3. Industry you're in or have been in: Power tool production
4. Company you work for and location: Robert Bosch Group Hungary
5. Length of time in quality function: 4 years in rail vehicle construction as quality co-workers then quality manager. After that 4 years in a multinational automotive supplier as quality assurance engineer. I'm currently dealing with supplier development, this is my third workplace.
6. Something personal that sets you apart: I am 31 years old and I have a beautiful bride and a 14-months son. My hobbies are music, sport fishing, and hiking. I like good movies and science-fiction staff. In a part of my free time I give advice for smaller companies in ISO 9001 projects.
7. Your pet peeve in quality: Many of today's leadership still believes that "The quality assurance department is sole responsibile for the proper quality of products." or "The purpose of the quality system that complies with the auditors" and so on.:)
8. If you could change the world of quality, what would you do?
I have some proposal, only a few... For example to restrict the free market competition of certification bodies, to assign exclusive competence for certain quality jobs, or all the important thing is missing here:)

QClady21 6th October 2009, 06:20 PM Hi everyone. My name is Pat Soriano
I'm a Supplier Quality Engineer for a medical device manufacturer in NJ. I'm new to this industry - just a little over a year, having worked in Cosmetic Manufacturing for 10 years in the same funciton. This industry is not as glamorous as my old gig, but Quality is the same song and dance no matter where you go. I don't think any one thing sets me apart from my fellow quality bretheren and sistren, although I still get slightly surprised when a production order isn't "hot" until it gets to MRB or Quality is "holding it up". A personal pet peeve of mine would be passing judgement. A friend of mine said that you can't judge a man until you've walked a mile in his shoes. By then, he's already a mile away you have his shoes and you can say whatever the hell you want! I don't know if that quote is his, but it's a good one. I've never thought what I would change about Quality...the negative stigma applied to it perhaps? Or maybe make it mandatory in a production environment for every employee to be trained as an inspector - from the CEO to newest employee in maintenance.
Shripad Panvalkar 7th October 2009, 12:53 AM I came to know this website through an external auditor. Its very good. I want to improve my knowledge on root cause analysis, corrective and preventive actions in Quality Management System. I am management representative in one multinational diagnostics company. :agree:

1. John Tinker
2. Operations Support Engineer - A mix of Production Engineer/Process Engineer/Trainer
3. Currently cable assemblies but have previously worked in street lighting, torque limiters etc

7. My biggest pet peeve is, when I ask "Why do we do it that way?" being automatically given the answer "Because we've always done it that way."
8. Get people to look at what they are doing and ask "Why?" in a constructive manner as opposed to "I've been told to do this, this is what I am doing."

lday38 8th October 2009, 01:14 PM Hello Everyone
Back in quality again. I had try to get something else but it didnt work out. I may have the best of both worlds though if I can learn about the product and how to be of service to my company when marketing is a priority.
I would love to hear from others who may be working with small appliances. Most of the product is made in China; the design is done at the warehouse I work in. I did think of design checklist but the engineers do this on their own.
ISO and such does not come to play at least not at this plant at this particular time. Returns are tracked and have had some success with them to start using the date codes.
Is it a qustion of the product life, use, etc.
Bad economy definetly hitting the sale of such things as blenders, toasters, etc. I would like to know more about marketing and quality mix.
Can anyone shed some light?
Thank you

I’m Harry Griessel a SHEQ manager for TENTE Castors in South Africa with more than 25 years quality experience in the (Manufacturing / IT - Software Development / Weapon Systems Development and refinery construction) environments. I am very much for the implementation of proven quality systems and the optimization for specific applications. My "pet peeve" as you call it is the time and effort to change people’s attitude towards the implementation of quality if they have been working otherwise for many many years.
To change the quality world I would introduce awareness to the youth at a very early age.
