7. Your pet peeve in quality
Compliance for the sake of compliance!!!
8. If you could change the world of quality, what would you do?
Make companies realize that QMS are intended to help you improve your business, not something to get (or keep) you "in the game".
I work for a SW company that sells/markets QMS software. My hope though, is to continue to learn from the experts as much as I can about quality systems. In a previous life I spent some years in a plastics manufacturing company laboratory as a supervisor. I got to see firsthand what "compliance for the sake of compliance" can get you...frustrated and overworked!!!
I'm looking forward to meeting you all!

My name is George.
I am an auditor in the agro-field (I think that this will be a major NC for me from what I was reading during the last days I visited the site.... :( ).
I really think that this site offers many things to all quality people and I would really like to be a part of it.
I am abt to stop working as a subcontracted auditor and make smth new in the certification field - namely a new certification company in the food field mainly concerned with ISO 14000, HACCP, BRC, IFS, EUREPGAP, SQF, BIOLOGICAL etc.
Both iso/iec guides 62-65.
Most probably I will open up a new topic in the registration field of Elsmar Cove reg the abv.
See you there!!!!
Ciao for now

Welcome to the Cove, Dawn. I could not help but notice your quote above "But that is how we have always done it". I have attached a Slide Show I placed on the cove some time ago that deals withthis very topic. I use at at all of my Quality Training as an ice breaker.
See Apes and Culture powerpoint presentation in the Teaching quality! The History of quality (from artisans to TQM) (http://elsmar.com/Forums/showthread.php?p=47419#post47419) thread.
Enjoy!

2. Currently I am an Engineering / Manufacturing Manager but in my previos life I was a Quality Manager for 5 years
3. I am currently in the Industrial Hose market, working with Automotive, Marine, Commercial and Medical fluid or air transfer systems. I have also worked in the medical and electronics industry.
4. The company I work for is called Purosil and we are located in Souther California
5. I have been involved in some aspect of quality most of my career but have only in the past 7 years been a large player in it.
6. I can't say that it sets me apart from others in Quality but my integrity, committment and dedication to achieving a level of quality within my company definately sets me apart from others in my company.
7. I don't actually have a pet peeve in quality but I am a bit disappointed in the typical backseat role quality takes in a manufacturing environment. Even though my current employer, and other employers before this one, have QS or ISO certification and are supposed to drive quality down from Top Level Management, I find that they are only interested in quality systems when there are audits coming that could affect the attainment or retainment of the certification. These quality systems were not designed to be a rush and fix type of system, they are supposed to be used to plan and develop processes that maintain a level of quality in the manufacturing of a product, to increase the reliability of the product and reduce possible modes of failure. A well designed and structured quality system could save a company a large sum of money, yet Top Level Management rarely sees it as an opportunity for success, only for monetary growth. Sorry, didn't mean to vent there.
8. If I could change the world of quality, i would make it a requirement that all operators, managers and supervisors haveto spend a year in a quality role prior to filling their allotted position. I believe there would be a lot more understanding with regard to acceptable and/or desirable products and less rework/scrap coming through the final inspection area in typical manufacturing companies.

4. Company you work for and location? John L Bates and Associates a consultancy company in Adelaide, Australia
5. Length of time in quality function? 24 years from when it was just quality control
6. Something personal that sets you apart? Working in Australia. Helping so many different types of companies.
7. Your pet peeve in quality? "Don't get me started."
Oh OK then
Ridiculously complicated standards and tools (like TS16949).
Accreditation schemes that read like scams.
Resources diverted into onerous certification schemes and record keeping rather than improvement
Supplier Quality Manuals.
Finished for the moment.
8. If you could change the world of quality, what would you do? Simple, simple, simple.
I noticed that many of you in the states shared my cynisicm that quality can become the opposite of what it was meant to be. I did though join the site to get some sense of community with a group that faces the same sort of challenges I do so that I can learn and help others.
Claes Gefvenberg 30th August 2004, 06:49 AM I did though join the site to get some sense of community with a group that faces the same sort of challenges I do so that I can learn and help others. You really hit a nerve there... Of course we all come here to learn and help each other, but that sense of community is not to be neglected either: We really do need the possibility to discuss things with people facing similar challenges. This is the place to do it, if there ever was one.
Welcome all :bigwave:. We are looking forward to your posts.

patricialtd 3rd September 2004, 04:26 AM Hello and greetings from Riga Latvia now part of the European Union
I am an American who has decided to live in Europe after 30 years of doing quality improvement work in the USA and Asia.
I now operate a company based in Riga Latvia that provides the Dr. Deming RED BEAD Experiement game to world wide clients.
I was part of the original group that developed the game in 1992 while working at Hewlett-Packard Company in California. I have been manufacturing and selling the game since 1994.
For the last five years I have been working to improve quality in the ex soviet country of Latvia. Latvia has a long history of quality dating back over 800 years now. But, the Soviet mindset has left some serious scars on the people and the work systems. It is quite a bit of work to find ways to remove these old habits and find new ways of managing and operating a business.
My biggests problem with quality programs is that people talk a lot and don't seem to find time to "Walk the Talk"!
I am excited about the future as sales of the RED BEAD Experiment have been strong all over the world this year.
My plan is to develop a series of online workshops and group meetings around the world to discuss the methods and techniques of Dr. Demings teachings at a grass roots level.
If you are interested in joing our groups, please visit these sites and send me an email.
Regards, Mike Johnson

I hope your experience here in the Cove is enjoyable. You've arrived at a slow time in the USA - Labor Day weekend, the last major holiday of the summer. It will be an ideal time for you to explore the various features of the Cove:
downloads of useful articles and forms
search of topics that have meaning for you
reading some of the jokes in our humor section (after all, "all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy!")
If you ask any questions, though, don't expect a lot of replies until the holiday ends and folks return on Tuesday.

Job Title: Process Engineer working for process and quality improvements
Industry I am in: Semiconductor Industry
Company: Currently I am working with Panjit Semiconductor in China. I worked for Fairchild Semiconductor Philippines for about 11 years.
Length of Time in Quality: I have been working with Quality people for about 5 years.
People working for quality are sometimes irritating but I understand the role. .
quality is a very important factor to be the best company.
If I can change the world of quality, every input variables must be closed to perfection and everybody must be responsible and involved.
Kevin H 9th September 2004, 12:40 AM Hello all, my Name is Kevin M. Haffey
Currently am a Quality Assurance Engineer - responsible for the quality system, etc.
Currently working for an iron powder producer, past work includes running an A2LA accredited lab in a steel mill, working as a field engineer for an industrial ga supplier, & working as a metallurgist in various capacities for steel mills.
Company is North American Hoganas, near Johnstown, PA
I've been out of college about 30 years - about 23 of it has been in quality related activities.
Something that sets me apart - an interest in history - most of the hobbies are related to it - French & Indian War (7 Years War for non-US members) reenactment, country dancing, blacksmithing, fencing, etc.
My pet peeve in quality is a toss-up between "the flavor of the day" and management lip service to the concept of quality.
Get management to fully support designing quality into products & realize that root cause analysis usually isn't quick/simple.
Regards to all and hope to provide some quality input to discussions & receive insights into quality/quality assurance. Only wish I'd discovered this site before we decided to upgrade our certification to ISO/TS 16949

8. If you could change the world of quality, what would you do? - Make top management responsible for the QMS. Heck, if you have to follow a standard or specification, why not put in that lovely little multi-page document that the management rep SHALL be someone from top management? LOL
BRoberts 9th September 2004, 09:33 AM :bigwave: Hi! I have been visiting the Cove off and on for about a year. It has been a great source of info. as well as a great "thought provoker"!
My name is Boots Roberts. I'm a Quality Engineer for a bearing manufacturer in South Carolina. We are mostly automotive, a portion of which goes to the Big 3. Before that, I was in Heavy truck for a manufacturer of fifth wheels (for about 5 years). Our plant was shut down for business reasons. And before that, I did Industrial/manufacturing engineering work (mostly) for a riding lawn mower manufacturer (for about 8 years).
I have been in quality for about 5 years. I started as the Industrial Engineering manager at the fifth wheel company, but they gave me a chance to try the Quality Manager's job after a few years. Right now I am responsible for a Doc control/ records activities, internal auditing, and various special projects as they come along. (Other duties as assigned!) And I am heavily involved in dealing with 3rd party audits.
I enjoy exercising. My main thing is running. (some would call it jogging) I am thinking about doing a half marathon soon. I guess that's a little unusual for a late 30's engineer!
My pet peeve in quality is people only doing a halfway job of applying the system. (the auditor WILL find them... it's Murphy's law!)
Spelexus 10th September 2004, 12:01 PM I have really gotten a lot out of this forum and all of you who participate. I was curious, though, who all of you are and what you do. How about letting us know a little bit about you and your background?

8. If you could change the world of quality, what would you do?
Fully agree with some of the previous comments. Rotational roles for a period to give experience of 'walking in the other man's shoes'. My initial experience gained in Manufacturing has proved invaluable to me time and time again.

Length of time in quality: I've spent nearly 11 years working in QA
Something personal that sets me apart: I'm a fun person and I demand that people on my teams enjoy themselves!
Pet Peeve: Lack of accountability within organizations regarding quality.
What would I change: Lack of accountability within organizations regarding quality. I get a little pissed off when I am personally held accountable for someone else's total lack of regard for policy.
Viki N. 10th September 2004, 06:03 PM Hi,
My name is Viki and I work for Scientific Molding Corp. (SMC). We have 2 other divisions SMC Innovations and SMC Medical Manufacturing Div. all located in Somerset, WI. We are a contract manufacturer of plastic injection molded components and assemblies, medical and otherwise.
My position with the company is in the Corporate Quality Systems Dept. I mostly deal with procedures/forms/internal audits/3rd party audits, etc. I have been in this position for 2 years now. We have just begun getting into the contract manufacturing of medical devices and there are many things we could use some guidance on or even resource information. Am looking forward to being part of this group.
My biggest pet peeve about quality is the fact that many people don't really understand the importance of a good quality system and when it comes to nonconformances they act like they don't have a clue on what their responsibilites are (even as Managers).
Something personnel? Well, I can jerry-rig just about anything! :)

7. Your pet peeve in quality: If you can't get certified, don't pay us.
8. If you could change the world of quality, what would you do: I'm still new though I may have completed ISO 9001:2000 for some compaines. But, I am not the expert in this field yet. Thus, to make changes in the quality world, I do not think that I am qualified enough to comment.Still have a long way to go. Thanks, Elsmar Cove contributors, for being here. :thanx:

1. Name:
Dana, aka Misbadu (titled after one of my favorite Artists: Erykah Badu)
2. Job Title or explanation of what you do
I am a Quality Assurance Manager, small company so basically I am responsible for all QA/QC and Regulatory requirements.
3. Industry you're in or have been in
I am focused on Technology, mostly Medical Device
4. Company you work for and location
Small medical device company in Minnesota
5. Length of time in quality function
9 years
6. Something personal that sets you apart
I like to focus on Best Practices, good communication, no blame or finger pointing. Problems will arise, its not about who was responsible, its about getting them out right away and focusing on change. I believe that if the staff of a company gets everything out on the table, all projects are very visable from the start, business as a whole is better. My two philosophies are "Less is More" and "The Visual Workplace"
7. Your pet peeve in quality
People who go overboard, and take the standards and regulations too far.
8. If you could change the world of quality, what would you do?
Get the understanding out to people that Quality is not just a painful regulation or requirement that we do because we have to. It is an opportunity to better business as a whole.

5. Length of time in quality function - 6 years
6. Something personal that sets you apart - Understanding that it is much better to do the right thing wrong than the wrong thing right because when errors are corrected it makes doing the wrong things wronger, but the right things righter.
7. Your pet peeve in quality - reactive Quality departments who are little more than signatories who fail to understand variation.
8. If you could change the world of quality, what would you do? - Teach the methodology of continuous improvement in schools, so the way of thinking is opened up, understanding variation and how to act upon it. There is no sphere in the working world that would not benefit from this, either individually or collectively as a whole, as a country or as a Union.

matkins 23rd September 2004, 01:56 PM I'm Melanie Atkins
I'm Quality Manager for a small (40 employees) contract manufacturer of electronic assemblies and cables in central Texas. I've been in quality in some capacity for about 25 years. I started in software development/configuration management/IV&V and migrated to hardware and printed circuit board assembly when I moved to Texas to help out in the family business. Since then, we sold the business but I stayed on as Quality Manager.
I spent 12 years as a naval officer where they taught me computer programming (starting with machine and assembly language and punched cards). Then I moved into systems/database development/project management. I headed an IV&V project in Saudi Arabia in the late 1980s. Essentially our Navy built their Navy from the ground up and my team was responsible for the evaluation of the software being implemented in Saudi command centers.
My pet peeve is management that thinks quality can be done in a vacuum. Put me in my room, close the doors, and I'll develop a great QMS that nobody else needs to be concerned about or involved with.
I did alot of thread surfing before registering and got alot on great information from the folks on this site. I look forward to participating cause there's alot of things I need help on and I feel confident I can get that help here!
Thanks
johnstrat 23rd September 2004, 05:07 PM Hi All
I stumbled on this site while researching ISO 13485 and I think this is a fantastic forum.
1. My Name is John Stratoudakis
2. I am a self employed Quality Consultant
3. I specialize in helping small companies achieve ISO 9001 registration.
4. I operate in South Africa. I have developed an Internet based Quality management system. My clients get a fully electronic management system with a shared platform thereby helping to keep costs low. I would be very interested to hear whether any other quality proffesionals out there would like to make use of my system. Theoretically the Internet should transcend all borders.
5. I have been involved in Quality for over 20 years. I have a National Higher Diploma in Electronics, a National Higher Diploma in TQM and ASQ CQE
6. I enjoy target shooting as a sport.
7. My pet peeve in quality is people beleiving that just writing a procedure will solve the problem. You have to design Fail Safe systems.
8. I believe that we as quality proffesionals need to start focussing our attention to the study of the human sciences. Why do people make mistakes and how can we design systems that are Fail Safe and that help the worker to perform better.

1. Name
Hello all, My name is Katherine McKay and have been a user of this forum since april 2004
2. Job Title or explanation of what you do
When I registered I was a Quality Auditor for a information service provider who was just implementing ISO 9001:2000 and attampting certification. I left the position due to personal reasons as well as the deviation from my Quality focus on medical device/Pharma industries.
I am presently in a contract position with medical device company as a QA Documentation Supervisor. Just started a week ago.
3. Industry you're in or have been in
Medical Device
4. Company you work for and location
Anika Therapeutics Woburn, MA
5. Length of time in quality function
Off and on for 6 years (QC, QA, QS, with some RA)
6. Something personal that sets you apart
My organizational skills and my second nature approach to RA
7. Your pet peeve in quality
Lack of commitment to quality by company staff at various levels. People just are not into the details.
8. If you could change the world of quality, what would you do?
GUIDELINES are just that GUIDELINES. I hate auditors who think the guideline is the rule and do not try to apply the guideline to the industry.
Also, make the application of quality into every industry more stimulating to learn and easy to apply. People would enjoy following the "Quality Way" if it were more fun... and It can BE.
I am presently reacquainting myself with the newest ISo med. dev. regs and finding it very easy to utilize the ISO 9001;2000 to them. As the ISO13485 is set up in much the same manner as 9001, with the specificities to medical devices added. I have come to accept and adopt the process way into my quality mentality and can easily adapt it into the medical device industry. Now that my focus is on Documentation, much more of my time will be devoted to what I enjoy most about quality. This position is contract (indefinite) and can possibly go permenant. This is my hope as the last three years has been filled with lay offs and economic hardship.
I am back and will be visiting the cove with more regularity. :bighug:
Thank You
Katherine

8. If you could change the world of quality, what would you do?: Convince everyone that APQP has to start BEFORE the contract is signed. Too late afterwards to go back and argue the 'fine points'. :argue:
For other information, ask away. I'm an ASQ-certified CMI, CQT, CQE, currently considering certification as CQM. I am (among other things) the certified worker representative on the JHSC, working towards my certification as First Aid Instructor (St John Ambulance), have 4 kids, 3 dogs, 4 rats, 2 hamsters, assorted other flora and fauna, and generally have an 'interesting' life.
Found this site during a Google Search for 'Campaign Prevention' information, and am extremely glad I did....looks to be an excellent group here.

6. Something personal that sets you apart - Let's see . . . I am actually an American expat. I've been in Saudi Arabia for almost 20 years. I am bi-lingual (that's another story). I write poetry and have had a couple of my pieces published and read publicly.
7. Your pet peeve in quality - Not understanding the essence of the requirements. Not getting support from colleagues.
8. If you could change the world of quality, what would you do? Give me a few months on this one . . . . I hope to contribute more to the forums as I learn more and our department begins actual continued improvement.
One final question. I have noticed on the web references to ISO 10015-1999 and 10015-2000 Training Guides. Could someone give me an idea if these are still valid and what their relationship is with ISO 9001-2000? My feeling is that the 10015 could help us as a training organization focus on our particular operations in a more direct fashion.
Would appreciate any feedback.
Best regards, to all.

7. Your pet peeve in quality: That i don't know much about it
8. If you could change the world of quality, what would you do?: Don't think i'm qualified to answer this.
As you can tell from the answers to some of those questions, i am a 'newbie' in the fields of quality and test/measurement. I'm hoping i can learn how to start and run a succesfull calibration laboratory. Got any tips? :D
we will be calibrating simple devices such as DMMs and more complicated equipment like o-scopes and different types of analyzers. I was wondering what customers are looking for in a cal-lab? Where can i find out what certifications/recognitions I need to acquire before calibrating? Are there other issues we should be concentrating on prior to starting business?
i'll definetly be posting a lot of Q's, sorry ahead of time if I annoy you!
thanks!

Of course it is OK to tell friends and acquaintances about the Cove and invite them to visit. I am reminded of a famous sports columnist for the Chicago Tribune back in the middle of the last century, Arch Ward. His daily column was the Wake of the News and his motto was "the Wake depends upon its friends" which is essentially our motto here at the Cove.
Arch Ward was also mildly famous as founder of the baseball All-Star Game (1933) and Chicago College All-Star Football Game (1934)

Sarka 22nd December 2004, 05:54 AM Hi, I have just discovered this forum and I think it's really great and i would like to activelly participate in it as I'm going to have many questions and maybe some answers on the quality.

7. Bureaucratic creep in quality systems.
8. Simplify, simplify, simplify. When quality systems become too complex, companies often live on the edge of non-compliance until 1-2 months before an audit, when they suddenly "clean-house".
Jim 4E 28th December 2004, 04:35 PM I have really gotten a lot out of this website in the short time I have been part of it.

It should be applied sincerely
I was just looking at a thread regarding Quality Manuals. A manual should not only be for auditors and a replica of the standard. It should be a living document.

Mike Piechowicz 30th December 2004, 09:45 AM Greetings,

1. Mike Piechowicz
2. Manufacturing Engineer
3. Large Medical Device Manufacturere in Upstate NY.
4. Five years in QA, five years as Manufacturing Engineer - but I have few of the credentials one would expect. 5.About three years. Before that I was the director of Production Control for a global auto supplier
6.Honesty
7. Containment/Quality companies that are dishonest and milk the system
8.The lack of planning that takes place in GM,FORD, and DCX; most quality problems are created by changes that are rushed through the OEM and then thrown to the supplier with a deadline that dictates them to break process because of unrealistic implementation dates
bob3027 3rd January 2005, 03:00 AM 1. Name: Bob Donaldson

A smart man once said: "If I had one wish it would be for ignorance so I could once again experience the blissfulness of innocence" i.e. it only matters to those who know better...I would change Quality Systems to Quality Processes because those who know better know the difference.
Wes Bucey 3rd January 2005, 03:47 AM Welcome to the Cove:bigwave:
Yes, we all face some challenges in our jobs - isn't it nice to know there's a place like the Cove where you can come and kvetch and get help from folks you'll soon consider friends?
After a while, we hope you'll be among the ones GIVING help.
bob3027 4th January 2005, 01:57 AM Hi Wes, :thanx:
I'm up to my eyeballs right now with a new manufacturing plant full of QMS neophites and no Quality Manager in place yet. Trying to launch ISO-9001:2000 + ISO-14001 compliant QMS this year along with MRP implementation and Lean Manufacturing practices. No real plan for ISO registration at this point however.
This site is a real blessing to me, as I am sure it is to many others. You will find me very quietly harvesting the many ripe fruits in this vast orchard, but just for the present, I promise. Once the dust settles, I will be very happy spending time here and trying to "give back" as best I can.
Thanks again :thanks:
Best Regards,
Bob

Marc 6th January 2005, 01:22 AM Welcome! There are a lot of people here who help others and there's a heck of a lot of information already.
A lot of things in quality are less repetitive, I think you'll find, but rather there is a core which is described in differerent ways. It can sorta be like learning a language.
Good luck and again, Welcome!
Michaelar 6th January 2005, 08:26 AM Good morning.
I am doing alot of work with CS2 , CS1 and GP12 - what I don't understand is when GM is involved and the customer is either on a 20 day or 90 day CS2, why does the customer fight this instead of taking the help and doing the paperwork - do anything - to get off CS2 as quick as possible. We have one customer that is just plain stuborn and it is going on 120 days now.

I can't easily split this post off, so the best I can say is please start a new thread (probably the best forum will be the Customer Specific Requirements' forum) and ask.
This thread is really for people who want to introduce themselves rather than for asking for answers to specific questions.

Renshu 21st January 2005, 08:33 AM :biglaugh:
Hello All,
my introduction - name - Frank A.
I am a Quality Engineer for Dura Automotive in Fremont, Michigan and I believe automotive supplier is the best response.
I have been in the Quality arena now for about 12 years, I was a process engineer and product engineer prior to that.
My pet peeve in quality is suppliers blaming the operators for poor system problems - example - answer to an 8D - "Operator was fired for making bad product." OH????
If I could change the world of quality I would try and get the automotive industry to make up their mind - ISO - QS - TS - what's next? With cost downs and reductions on piece price, where do we fund all the changes they keep asking us to succumb to?
My personal that makes me stand out is that I am a martial arts instructor and college professor on the side. I have also developed a web site for quality - please feel free to check it out.
thanks and great to be part of the forum.
Frank A.

2. I am currently a graduate student at Fordham University in the
Deming Scholars MBA Program
3. Very diverse background - before I came to school I worked at a real-estate securities firm. My first internship was working with an enterprise quality team that was deploying a QMS based on ISO 9001-2000.
4. New York City
5. Just beginning... :-)
6. I recognized that I didn't want to be putting out fires for the rest of my life. I quit my job to pursue my MBA - but not a traditional MBA - I wanted a deeper learning experience... I am in my second semester now.
7. In my very short experience I have noticed a lack of management commitment and a focus on the bottom line at the expense of the organization. It seems like quality is thought of simply as a department or an after-thought - not a concept that is built into everything the organization does.
8. Get the people at the top to change the way they think about quality.
Renshu 24th January 2005, 09:05 AM Thanks for the update, as mentioned, I have never used or seen diamond shaped pins before. I was told that the concept was to ensure there was no elongation in a hole, but it just didn't seem feasible. Now that I have read your answers, it sounds correct and I have confidence in the information given me. I appreciate everyone's help and input. thanks again.

7. Your pet peeve in quality - Management "talking the talk, but not walking the walk".
8. If you could change the world of quality, what would you do? Instill in all, the understanding that quality is not an organization or function, but instead should be embedded in everything that we make/build/do and every service we provide.

2. Job Title or explanation of what you do
Director of Consulting Services - A rather grandiose title, my role within the organization encompasses the identification and design of UI and functionality changes for our Web-based management system software application, conduct QA testing for application bug fixes, features and enhancements prior to release, write and update our online help files prior to each software release, develop and conduct application training classes for our customers, serve as a management system implementation consultant for our customers.

I started in quality assurance back in 1984.
6. Something personal that sets you apart
Avid reader, largely self-educated (too busy earning a living since 15 to take time out for college)
7. Your pet peeve in quality
The delusion that the ability to use buzzwords and terminology with facility equates to knowledge and understanding of the basic principles of quality
8. If you could change the world of quality, what would you do?
Place greater emphasis on personal responsibility and accountability for the quality of the work we do.
fallon 28th January 2005, 09:02 AM 1. Scott
2. Quality Inspector for DoD.
3. Aircraft parts. Prior to that I worked as a Production Controller in ANG for
14 years.
4. DCMA-HArtford in Connecticut.
5. I'm relatively new to the quality field. Although I like to think I've been
doing it most of my working life.
6. Known as "Virilityman" by many due to the ability to have "kids on
demand". They say I just have to be in the area for someone to get
pregnant. Supposedly I have two sets of twins to my credit. I have 6 of
my own(that's 6 kids, not 6 sets of twins).
7. Years ago we went through a phase called TQM at the base. Suddenly
there were handbooks telling you how to speak quality and formulate a
PAT (Process Action Team). People were so caught up in talking this
strange new language they lost their common sense. I posted a sign on
the door to our office which said "Quality done, not quality spoken!"
Needless to say I was lectured to about my lack of team mentality with
respect to the quality movement. It's that ability to get so caught up in
the abstact theory of quality that one can no longer apply it in a practical
sense to production that bothers me most.
8. Make the whole quality process more tangible to the masses. They really
need to understand it before they can do it.
Wes Bucey 28th January 2005, 09:37 AM :bigwave: Welcome to the Cove, folks. We're always happy for an influx of new questions, new ideas, and new answers.
"Quality done, not quality spoken!"
IF I had been there, I would have championed your cause. Some folks just use the acronyms to make them seem superior to others who don't know the acronym. After a while, that "vegetable soup" is cooked too long and the letters break up. So, if I'm in aerospace, and I say we have a FMEA problem, is there a possibility I meant FEMA problem (since most folks pronounce the acronyms the same - "fee muh") and if I wrote it, could I have been dyslexic?
TIP: Look up acronyms at http://www.acronymfinder.com/
fallon 28th January 2005, 09:54 AM Thanks for the "Welcome Wagon", Wes. If you've been in the military long enough you'll find there's an acronym for just about anything. One question I have is where is the best place to ask questions? I posted a question on another thread catgory but it appears that thread is vacant at the moment. I had a question on GGG-P-463 (surface plate standard) and where I might be able to find it. Someone told me it might be in military publications. Are you familiar with this standard?

I recall a new Standard in the works
(new surface plate standard, ASME B-89.3.7)
The original Standard for Granite Plate is GGG P 463 (granite Surface Plate standard); Many Granite Plate manufacturers, suppliers, and calibration houses claim to use this Standard. Google the term (in Quotes) "GGG P 463" and you will come up with several companies that use the term in their "bragging" - ask them directly.
Hope this helps - you'll probably see other answers in your original thread. Do us a favor - once you get an answer that satisfies you, go back to your original thread and tell us what you got and where you got it so the next person with your question can be helped.
Al Rosen 28th January 2005, 11:33 AM Thanks for the "Welcome Wagon", Wes. If you've been in the military long enough you'll find there's an acronym for just about anything. fallon 28th January 2005, 03:25 PM Wes,
It looks like Al beat me to the punch. It was a mil std as I'd been told but trying to find it on the web was impossible. As I mentioned in my "hello" message, I'm relatively new to the Quality Field but this site appears to be a goldmine of information and experience. Hopefully, I'll be able to contribute to answering someone's questions down the road. For now, my inputs I'll try to keep directly proportional to the amount of ears and mouths I possess.

If I could change the world of quality, I would make sure that Engineering would understand that quality is their job too!!
Pamela, this strikes a cord with me too. As an auditor, I can tell you that every organization is dysfunctional. Some more, some less. To me, it is mind boggling that certain clichés like: “Do it right the first time and every time” seems to apply only to manufacturing.
It is amazing how many organizations I have assessed allowed for incredibly dysfunctional Engineering departments. I have been to so many companies that have twice as many engineers and draftsmen doing rework by processing Engineering Change requests to fix design flaws than the number of engineers and draftsmen working with New product introduction projects.
I find incredible that corporate mindset that thinks that it is natural for poor design packages to be released for manufacturing and be debugged/fixed over the product life cycle.
To me, new product introduction is a VERY critical process and very few organizations make a good job of it. Under the excuse of time to market being essential, poorly developed design packages get released and when the quality problems pop up, nobody really point the finger at Engineering. Risk management is a foreign concept to these people, failing to understand that a poorly designed product can create tremendous risks and liabilities for the organization.
Even worse, I have seen some companies deliberately mis-selecting individuals from other departments to participate in the design reviews, so the “critiquing” of the design is less in-depth. Ineffective design reviews, another one of my pet peeves…. Enough rambling…. Welcome to the Cove.

Randy 6th February 2005, 08:49 PM I found a couple of old shots I figured I could share with my buddies.
These 1st 2 things are better than 25 years old. I was somewhat thinner in both. :o
The 1st one was when I was a young police Lieutenant and the 2nd is around the time I came back in from doing "non-uniformed" police work dealing with sepratists, tax resisters, and white militants in the late 70's early 80's timeframe.

Something personal that sets you apart - Quality with smile
If you could change the world of quality, what would you do?- There is more need to change Quality professional than changing the whole world. We need to change the impression that Quality people are holy people and rest all are cheats. You see more mess up of papers in Quality departments, while we teach 5S. Lets set an example and we will see a much better world.

1. My name is Jonathan.
2, 3 & 4. I am the Director of Quality at a company in Pennsylvania that extrudes plastic tubing and insulated wire for Automotive, Industrial, Appliance, Communications, Aerospace, Environmental, Marine and Military applications.
5. Directly - The last 3 1/2 years (since 2001); Indirectly - about 6 years before that.
6. Something personal that sets you apart - ??...Driven, Organized, I can work with difficult customers and can work through most challenging "emergencies".
7. Your pet peeve in quality: That some Automotive customers DEMAND perfection and / or a "drop all your doing, fly here now and send it all back" response for all issues while at the same time expecting (or even taking) unreasonable cost reductions which prevent investments in Information Systems, Quality Improvement Initiatives and necessary staff / equipment. The fact that some of our Tier 1 customers get it done to them and complain, but yet do the same to us is disappointing. We treat our customers as we do our vendors.
8. If you could change the world of quality, what would you do? So many things...For one, see my "pet peeve" comments above. Secondly, Sufficient Training Budget (supported by reasonable pricing / profit) for personnel at all levels throughout organization to "build quality in" from the start. Thirdly, that all cross-functional areas within an organization, even those not product-related, would see themselves a vital part of "Quality" and have the "Customer" and "Profitability" in mind in all that they do.
Have a great day!
Jonathan

Wes Bucey 15th February 2005, 05:46 PM We've seen other photos of Claes' office. He really is that neat. Office furniture showrooms are not as uncluttered as his office. I've known other folks like that - I always feel like I should run out and have my suit pressed and shoes shined when I'm with them because I feel so frumpy in their presence.
Heck, Claes can probably describe within a centimeter where his television remote is back home while he's slaving away in his office. I, on the other hand, had to tape a fluorescent orange streamer to mine so I could find it each evening.

:topic: The thing is... You must have heard some variation on this old saying: "Controlling order is trivial - A genius can handle chaos".
My take: It takes a genius to handle chaos, and if there is order, the genius in question (and don't look at me  ) will be able to direct his/her attention towards other more worthwile pastimes. Please have a look at the old thread Seeking Tips: Office Improvement - Best Practices (http://elsmar.com/Forums/showthread.php?t=6428&highlight=office+kaizen) which I happen to think we're not nearly done with yet. IEGeek 25th February 2005, 04:29 PM Claes,
Just got the picture of your office. First off, you are a lot like me in the neatness category. It helps keep people on their toes, dont you think? :horse:
Second, I noticed you do not have a chair. I tired to implement this around the first of the year here with no success. I think that is a great idea and a perfect way to outfit an office. What better way to get people out on the floor. Kudos to you and the gang at wherever it is you "play" all day.
Just some thoughts on a slow Friday afternoon.....

2. Job Title or explanation of what you do -
Good question. My business card says Quality Systems Site Leader but on internal docs its QMS Supervisor. My boss is threatening to change it and I told him the Queen of Quality would work. I then told him it didn't much matter; he could call me Bob as long as he didn't take any of my salary. I am responsible for the Quality System (ISO 9001 and Medical Device QSR Part 820) for our site which includes 7 factories and a distribution system.
3. Industry you're in or have been in – Manufacturing
4. Company you work for and location - South Carolina
5. Length of time in quality function -
19 years. I have worked in QA, Engineering and Manufacturing but I was always involved in improvement activities so I counted all. The only year I didn’t count was when I was a Maintenance Technician. You all know that has nothing to do with quality. Ha Ha
6. Something personal that sets you apart -
I guess what may set me apart is, if I was on the Apprentice this year I would be on the Street Smarts team. I took the hard route. Much of what I know is self taught (and thanks I've learned much from the cove)
7. Your pet peeve in quality -
I guess it’s related to quality ... it drives me absolutely crazy the amount of money spent on training/seminars with absolutely no return to the company or expectation of use. (Looks good on the resume, the food's great and those trips are really fun!)
8. If you could change the world of quality, what would you do? -
Improve everyone's understanding of statistics especially upper level management who are making decisions with no data, wrong data or little understanding of the data.

SAVED
Can you not tell us the name because you do not know, or perhaps you may turn into a pillar of salt for revealing it....
One would hope that you do not treat your six sigma information in the same way. I found the best way not to get a reaction from people I can't share information with, for what ever reason, is not to say 'I know something you don't', but to say nothing at all.
But then, I suppose that it is what six sigma is about....
I don't suppose this would be a good time to ask for some hits on my karma button....
Claes Gefvenberg 26th February 2005, 01:35 PM My word... New talent just pouring through the gates. Welcome all Cove newbies http://elsmar.com/Forums/images/smilies/bigwave-d2.gif It's a pleasure meeting you all.

Myself in particular http://elsmar.com/Forums/images/smilies/biggrin-a1.gif As it happens, I will pay a visit to the manufacturing area anytime I'm given half a reason to do so. I need my sources of information, see... Second, I noticed you do not have a chair.Actually, I do (though it's not very comfy). I just stuffed it in a corner to avoid tripping over the confounded thing. ... http://elsmar.com/Forums/images/smilies/lol.gif
