Greetings all,

Ok I'm going to break down and get involved.
I have been using the site now for a few months and have found it very helpful.

I am the Quality Assurance Manager, Management Rep, and Production Scheduler (I know, seems like a conflict of interest) at a small (40 employees) sheet metal manufacturing company in suburban Detoit.

We have been QS now for about 6 years and are pursuing TS registration.

I am down to writing my last procedure for Preventive Actions.

I hate this one because I have always said that a P/A could be written as a Continuous Improvement or a Preventive Action. (I know that I will get conflicting statements on that one LOL)

I have read many postings that have said they combined the C/A and P/A forms as one. It occurs to me that would work fine for QS but not TS.

TS requires a seperate procedure for P/A's and C/A's. I am making the assumption that the two procedures should not be mirror immages of each other so how could the forms be.

One think I like is that TS does not require a procedure for Continuos Improvements but says you will continuouslly improve the QMS.

I am reading this as saying through the correvtive action and preventive action process you are continuouly improving the QMS.

One last point, wouldnt corrective action address root cause more closely than preventive actions? If you are trying to prevent an occurance how would you have a root cause already?

I had a 3rd party internal audit a while ago (that turned into a gap analysis audit because it went so bad) and the auditor told me I need to address root cause as part of preventive actions. I do not see this as part of the standard and do not agree with her.

all opinions are welcome

kindest regards

Hi there,

My name is Cornelis van Dijk and I just happened to stumble across this web site, looking for some information but I got so distracted by all the good stuff on this site that I decided to simply register and add the site to my favorites.

My job is called "Quality Management & Process Improvement". Don't tell anyone, but I'm not sure what that's supposed to mean ... I love lunchtime though.

I work for a rather small company in the Netherlands, where I was also born and raised, so forgive me for any spelling errors or incomprehensible sentences ... speaking or writing English has never been one of my strong-suits.

Even so, I hope I can contribute in some way.

Regards,

Cornelis.

Welcome Tracey and Cornelis! This is a fun place to learn and advance the knowledge of others through your contributions here. Cornelis, please don't worry about spelling errors or grammatical errors: I make them all the time. My advice: don't be afraid to say something/ask something here and worry about being wrong. Be brave and state your thoughts. In the end, the learning offsets any embarrassment and most folks here are understanding and helpful, not out to belittle anyone.

Have fun with the Cove!!!

Ello,

My name is Streider. I live in the UK.
I have worked in quality for 20 years. I have a degree in mechanical engineering and an MSc in strategic quality management. I have just completed a law degree. LLB Law with business. Very helpful in this day and age.

I specialise in mechanical and aeronautical engineering.

I own a german shepherd dog who is a complete lunatic and loves watching cartoons on the tv. :bonk: .

If there is one thing that really annoys me are the people that work in engineering (mainly machinists) who automatically think they can call themselves engineers when they are actually little more than button pushers.

If I could improve the quality industry, I would stop production engineers interfering with quality decisions for the sake of getting the job out the door, just to get it back again because it is wrong. :lmao: Happens too often unfortunately.

4. Ogihara Europe Ltd, based in Telford, Shropshire, England
5. I'm not in a direct quality function, but we all contribute to total quality. The component can only be perfect if the process is run perfectly, it takes a lot more than a good chart to make a good part.
6. I'm logical and creative. I also worked on the shop floor for many years and it helps me to understand what impacts my planning has on the processes I manage. Not just the machine but the people too.
7. Pointless quality managers, pointless tolerance adhearance that doesn't contribute to product quality, the way the industry seems geared around finding blame instead of finding solutions and preventing reoccurance, although it is changing for the better, slowly.
7a. My biggest gripe is that the world of quality does not include our environmental impact, dollars first, environment second :(
The customer is always right no matter what process needs undertaking to achieve it. Why have a perfect component if the process greatly polutes the world we live in? The impact on environment from design through to manufacture should be the first priority or soon we won't have an environment left to sell products in.
8. End globalisation, enforce local supply as often as possible.

I'm going to take a wild guess you mean Value Stream Mapping (manufacturing process evaluation technique)

Have you tried our search tool using the term "value stream"?

Generally, we prefer folks to write out their acronyms the first time they use them to prevent misunderstanding and wasted effort writing, "Do you mean . . .?"

For example, you could have just as easily referred to

Variation Simulation Modeling (CAE) [Computer-Aided Engineering ]
Versioned Staged Model (software development model)
Virtual Services Management
Visual System ManagementAny of which could be a viable topic for a person involved in Quality.

My name in this Forum is Gizmo Guru, although that's not what my folk's call me. I formed my own Regulatory Affairs and Quality Assurance consulting business 9 months ago after spending roughly a decade and a half in the FDA. I have also worked in the private sector in complex processes for devices and biologics.

My firm is Actualized Science and our focus is on start-up groups as they emerge from the academic research arena. We emphasize Regulatory Strategies and the Quality infrastructures that Venture Capitalists like to see and FDA requires for initial submissions.

I am a Chemical Engineer with a strong background in Computer driven device and pharma (Part 11) compliance. Before you spell that N.E.R.D, you should know I also have an undergraduate degree in Music and play in a local band.

Life is good here in Florida. I'm looking forward to picking up on of the great ideas I've seen posted here.

1. David A. Profitt
2. Quality Assurance Technician, CMM programmer, DCC Coordinator
3. Screw Machines, CNC 6 axis, Acmes, Davenports, Large Stamping presses,
Hot upselt welding, Assembly of DOD Components, finish grinders
4. Job shop in Cincinnati, although I live in Kentucky.
5. I've been in Quality since 1983, when I was 19, when it was easier to get started in the same field my late father was in. I have served as Quality Manager at 2 previous organizations. Certified in QS9000 and ISO9001:2000. Six Sigma trained. Have done work for Toyota, Honda, BMW, Chrysler, Ford, Lexmark, IBM, Clark, Hyster, General Electric, Boeing, and DOD work.
6. Father of a son, age 20, daughter age 16.
Interested in Deep Space exploration. The Cassini spacecraft is carrying a DVD with names submitted to JPL in 1996, I am one of those names on board. Also New Horizons, at Saturn right now, has a DVD as well, which I am included in. Something only a small percentage of the population has done.
Planning on starting my own loudspeaker business in the near future.
Not enough room here for all of my interest. Need I say more?
7. Inexperienced high level management making decisions involving Quality issues, with no basis to make a decision, without listening to many years of experience within the company.
8. Have the lip service about Quality, backed up with action involving rejected product and operators.

Don't let the fancy title fool you! I'm just a Quality Technician with an affinity for computers and writing work instructions. I've been involved with ISO since 1994 and authored most of the work insturctions for the Inspection Group. I also co-designed the Access database we use to record the data we collect. 7. pet peeve - that most people assume only one technique will be "the one" that works - sometimes it takes more than one technique applied. Also, come techniques have been applied incorrectly/too frequently and give that technique a bad rep with others so they are so hesitant never to ever use that technique again.

Welcome, folks!:bigwave:
As I look back through the posts in this thread, I am astounded by the international character of our Cove readers and posters. Despite my years of experience, I remember how tough it can be to be the "new guy" and not exactly certain of one's knowledge or status within an organization. It's nice to have an independent place to come for a reality check on a regular basis.

Remember this: newbies start coming here for help from "experienced experts," but soon the newbies become experienced and expert enough to help the next round of newbies. This is probably one of the great "on-the-job" training courses in the world and we welcome you as "students" and look forward to your careers as "instructors."

Hello!
I'm Carol W.
I'm HR/QA Coordinator - interesting combo
I just recently moved to Houston, TX and started with my company in March/06
We are the US & Mexico distributor for mobile electrification systems & components manufactured at our parent company in Germany.
In April, I was asked to implement a QA System which as been a daunting task, not coming from a QA background (zero experience) but I'm plugging right along I've caught the quality bug.
The information I've stumbled across here is beyond measure, and I greatly appreciate the tips, advice and all the freebies.
Being a quality fledgling, I'm afraid to list my peeves, probably more of a general lack of understanding. Okay, here's one small one - a calibrated ruler or more correctly "rule" (in TX we call them rulers a.k.a. yardstick).
Thanks to all of you that ask questions, it really helps the newbies like me.

Joined the thread a few days ago and found plenty of interest already

My name is Paul Demuth (49 years old) and I live in Swindon, Wiltshire, England.

Currently a section manager in the automotive industry. Job function at the moment is controlling the return of suppliers delivey equipment for re use. Also have experience of all aspects of warehousing and am an ISO auditor.

My employer is South Marston DC Ltd who are part of the logistics arm of Honda Express and we have similar operations in Canada and America. I have been with them for 12 years and prior to that worked for a steel company, wine retailler, bicycle retailer and the post office.

Time in quality. Directly or indirectly approx 30 years.

I am one of a rare breed called gasheads (supporters of Bristol Rovers soccer club) we are frequently found in the lower half of the bottom division of English football.

Becomming disolusioned with the ISO system. It is getting cumbersome, time consuming and I am not convinced it achieves what it set out to do. Although it is my belief this is because in a lot of case's staff ae doing it because they have to, not because they want to.

Thanks,

I have recently been given the task (in addition to my numerous others) of ISO Implementation Co-ordinator. I'm still researching all that is entailed with the implementation procedure, and am rather intimidated, but remaining positive nonetheless. I've ordered a few books from amazon, and the All-in-one package from the ISO store so far, and am currently still in my research phase.:read: As far as quality pet peeves go, I'm sure I'll develop one or more also, at which time, I will rant until the cows come home.

Just a quick word of advise from someone who has implemented an ISO system from scratch - follow the "KISS" principle and you'll do fine.
"Say what you do & Do what you say" and try to avoid the pitfall of compensating for "holes" you may find by merely "papering them over" - of course, your eventual auditor/registrar will love you for giving them something to "write up" :notme:

Hi i'm new to the cove, but on first hand it looks great......lots of interesting stuff & some witty replies (i like that......don't want quality to rule my life, just be part of it). a question i would like to put out is:- has anyone found it difficult to identify EXACTLY what the interactions of key processes are within their business? i'm due our TS re-cert shortly & i'm fearful of not identifying correctly the interactions , then getting slapped with a non compliance for the privilege. Has anyone any worked examples they might like to share or similar experiences. To be fair to myself i probably know most of them, but i was wondering if people had come across a common theme for identification (in other words i'm looking for the easy route.......at least i'm honest).any info on this would be appreciated.
thanks

Hi,

My name is Melissa Votano. I live north of Houston, TX in a small burg called Magnolia. I have been involved in ISO through my employment with ABS and other companies. I even worked for the dreaded Enron back when they were still HNG Internorth in the 80s. I now work with my boyfriend. We own a Quality and Safety "Consulting" firm. Our market is oil and gas (Big Surprise there). Most of our clients are in the machining, welding and fabrication areas of the industry. We started our company to help businesses that have been burned by other consultants that seemed to be in it just for the money. We don't just do a Gap Analysis and run out the door with your check. We actually come into our clients facility and help them. We train them and help them write their manuals and implement their systems with a "hands on" approach. I only have 3 years experience but Greg, my partner, has over 20 years experience in Quality. We do perform other services, including, Safety Training, Welder Certification and Testing and Welding Inspection. I enjoy what I do and I see some amazing things out there. And I was really happy to find you guys. Thanks.

Quality is like a cop, can be a friend and someone to support or can rip you up if you want to violate the rules. The hard part is getting a good judge
(Management) to make the right call.
Peeve: Third part registrations, these bozos stand in like Gods. If your good at the job and you have the right people in your management then take a hike. OEM's are really only interested in product conformance at the right price & delivery and will always override a quality system if that comes into play. Be a leader with the management team and provide the rules to play by. Understand your company and it's players and always respect the customer for their needs and above all always strive for good relationships with all players. This is what is needed by Quality professionals, we don't need outsiders dictating standards.

Thanks again

Hi Sarah,

My experience has been a bit longer than yours - and it's identical !! It's a wonder that most folks in the production arena consider quality as an appendage that they wish they could get rid of - and blame when things go wrong !!

It's not easy - wooing people to join the bandwagon. But it can be done mostly -- that's the good part!

8. Make the quality function part of every business discipline, not just manufacturing as it is so often thought of.

 :frust: :frust: I have really gotten a lot out of this forum and all of you who participate. I was curious, though, who all of you are and what you do. How about letting us know a little bit about you and your background?

I was looking for something on line where I could learn about quality pratices. I hit paydirt when I stumbled onto a site called Caymen Cove.I've read a lot of interesting posts. Here is my shot at a brief bio.

1. Name - Doug Harcourt

2. Job Title or explanation of what you do - Auditor (which means I shoot fish in a barrel at my workplace) :lmao: :frust: :lmao:

3. Industry you're in or have been in - Parts Distribution, more precisely I work in a warehouse.

4. Company you work for and location Electrolux Fletcher, NC
(We got nothing to do with vaccum cleaners, Major appliance parts is what we do in our facilty)

5. Length of time in quality function - 8 years

6. Something personal that sets you apart - I don't stop.

7. Your pet peeve in quality Which one? Management lipservice, training (or not), not returning corrective actions, not being able to verify the ones that are returned...

8. If you could change the world of quality, what would you do? It's difficult to nail down, I guess that I just want people to take quality seriously.

WOW! Over 1200 posts in this thread. Maybe we're doing something right. I hope each of you newcomers takes something back from the Cove to your own work and home environments. Most of all, I hope you bring back the idea that folks from different cultures and circumstances CAN work together toward a common goal. In our case here in the Cove, the goal is universal high Quality of goods and services.

Thank you all for remind me again and again.

I am a teacher in the university. I do statistics but engaged in analysis of education statistics in general. My concern is quality of the above. for Example how to improve the quality of enrolemtn data? passes, failures, dropouts, etc

I recently came accross the concept PDSA or Deming's cycle. While I was looking for a decent manual- I came accross this web site. So any one can help!

thanks all

The American Society for Quality shares your concerns. We have several public forums where folks are invited to share views on quality in education. Perhaps you may find some information you can use yourself. The link is http://www.asq.org/discussionBoards/category.jspa?categoryID=5 Why not browse some of the threads in the forums aimed at education issues?

5. Something personal that sets you apart
Desire to learn and ability to listen
6. Your pet peeve in quality
Fairly new to professional arena, but one year of intern as an IE and 2 months at new job I have heard this many a times “not my job” & “this is the way we have always done it”.
7. If you could change the world of quality, what would you do?
Use quality as a proactive tool and not a reactive
Quality function not to be a standalone but an integrated function given equal importance at every step of the product life right from design through to the customer use of product.
I have been reading this forum quite a while now. An excellent resource for young engineers like me. Hope to learn a lot and start contributing pretty soon.

7. Pet Peeve is too much paperwork, I am choking on it!
8. In the world of quality it seems to me that companies develop their quality system apart from developing their employees. I think that the thrust of a quality system should focus on developing the employee, I think the quality system, product/service and ultimately the industry would benifit from that development.

You're very close; the development of the process INCLUDING the people that are involved in and utilize that process should be the focus of quality systems... far too many systems concentrate on mere compliance, which negates a continuous improvement effort.

Hi everyone -

Since I have been freeloading on your site for a few weeks, thought it was time to introduce myself, using the 8 (or less) answers as requested. I say less in case I decide not to answer a questions :)

1) My name is Brian

2) I am currently the "Interim Director of Quality and Logistics". This is a fancy title that means I am on contract to get their ISO system back in line.

3) I am contracted to a large distribution (of industrial filtration products)

4) I will withhold their name in case I say something less that flattering. They are located near Detroit.

5) I have been in quality since I was dragged kicking and screaming into it 15 years ago (more about that below).

6) For 20 years I owned, along with a partner, a good size fabrication company in Detroit. Unfortunately my customer base was not diverse enough to stand the downturn in the economy. We closed that 2 years ago. Since I had a large body of knowledge I was lucky to hook up with a contract house.

7) Pet peeve with quality? There are 2 - #1, when people do it because the have to (I was one of them in the beginning. ISO was the price to pay to be a tier 1 supplier. I was smart enough to see how I could make it pay for itself. I was dumb enough to think the auto companies cared about quality more than pricing.

The second is has to do with the inconsistencies of how you are audited. I have had good auditors and some bad ones. They all have their pet peeves and certain styles.

and Finally #8) - what the heck was #8? Oh well, I'll leave it at 7.

Thanks for everything. I have learned alot through this site already.

Brian

Hey Brian, how is your current position going? I to have been in Quality for 23 years. For the most part in the automotive field. You had a good point when you stated that you thought they might care more about Quality than cost but I think you nailed it down pretty good.
