Coury Ferguson 18th October 2006, 07:51 AM Just a reminder -- Have YOU input your location?
Frapper (http://www.frappr.com/elsmarcove)
and
Map Services (http://www.mapservices.org/myguestmap/showguestmap.do?id=Elsmar)
Thanks!
Marc
Is there a way to change your location? I checked out the website and didn't see how to change your location.
However, it would be nice if all newcomers and users would place their name and location.
SteelMaiden 18th October 2006, 09:26 AM Welcome Colibry!:bigwave:
Both to the Cove, and to the Quality arena. We hope that you learn lots and teach us lots too.
Marc 19th October 2006, 09:11 AM Is there a way to change your location? I checked out the website and didn't see how to change your location.
I honestly don't know. I'll have a look later today.
Coury Ferguson 19th October 2006, 09:12 AM I honestly don't know. I'll have a look later today.
Thanks Marc
Marc 19th October 2006, 09:43 AM I just looked all over the thing. It's a nice idea and all that, but I don't see any way to change a location. I guess one would have to just enter a new 'pin'.
Coury Ferguson 19th October 2006, 09:47 AM I just looked all over the thing. It's a nice idea and all that, but I don't see any way to change a location. I guess one would have to just enter a new 'pin'.
I will renter my current information to update my location from Florida to Georgia.
Atul Khandekar 19th October 2006, 10:00 AM This MAY be possible in Frappr- you can log in to your account and then 'Edit Profile' to change the location. I didn't try it, but there is a facility to change location.
Marc 19th October 2006, 10:23 AM I stand corrected... You're right, Atul. I went back in, looked around some more and edited my location and it changed the pin location. I just didn't look close enough earlier :notme: I did notice that even though I put in my exact street address in the map view it does not exactly locate my house like Google Earth does.
Essentially I had to 'Log In' with my e-mail address and password. That gave me access to change a number of settings.
C WengSoong 20th October 2006, 09:53 AM Hello !
1. Name : C. Weng Soong
2. Job Title : QA Manager
3. Industry : Manufacturing of Testile Products
4. Location : Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
5. Length of time in quality function : 12 years
6. Something personal that sets you apart : "Quality" is a way of life
7. Your pet peeve in quality : Lack of awareness/support/commitment all the way around
8. If you could change the world of quality, what would you do? Design quality from the beginning
Duffer 24th October 2006, 11:42 AM 1. Name: Richard Rains
2. Job Title: Quality Engineering Manager
3. Industry: Diesel Engine machined components - Rods, Blocks, Cylinder Heads
4. Joint venture operation between Cummins and Case New Holland located in Eastern North Carolina
5. Length of time in quality function: 20 years
6. Husband of 1 wife for 30 years - can leave work at work.
7. My pet peeve in quality is that we hear quality is number 1, but we know that production volume wins when push to comes to shove - I've had to play Fred Sanford too many times selling parts - not in current company but the memories of past jobs still haunt the dark recesses of my mind.
8. If you could change the world of quality, what would you do? We have to, absolutely have to, drive new designs to think about quality and manufacturability before product introduction. It's the best and cheapest time to implement real quality improvements.
Mr Niceguy 24th October 2006, 02:07 PM Name: Sorry I don’t put my name on the web any more
Job title: About 20% of me is ‘Quality Manager’, but I have many other titles like Team Leader, or even sometimes Principal Scientist.
Time in quality function: about 5 years.
Type of organisation: UK laboratory doing accident investigation, research, environmental and biomedical testing. Total staff employed – about 400.
We are 9001 certified for all investigation, research and testing (all 400 staff). There is a full-time Quality Manager for this (not me). About 40 of us are engaged in environmental testing accredited to 17025 (that’s my QM function).
My pet peeve, if there is one, is double assessment of our top level management system by the 17025 accreditation body and by the 9001 certification body. It’s getting worse because 17025:2005 holders can now claim conformity with 9001 principles. To justify that award the accreditation body probes much deeper into 9001 territory than they used to. A small specialised 17025 accredited lab probably doesn’t need 9001 but we do. Our range of services is so large I couldn’t begin to describe it here.
cheryl mcguire 25th October 2006, 10:15 AM My name is Cheryl McGuire I am Quality Manager for a finishing company. I have been in Quality for 14 years. I love this site it helps with questions. i am an ASQ Certified Auditor and love the auditing process. Everyday I try to learn something new.

suziwann 27th October 2006, 05:01 PM I just realised that this is the 'hello' thread too. So I just thought I would say 'hello.' :)

7. My pet peeve in quality is people who won't lift their heads and look around them. They not only can't think outside the box they live under the box. You can't be ruled by fear of failure!
8.Quality improvements: Always striving to turn data into knowledge and using that knowledge to improve the quality of people's work lives and the products they make and services they provide.
9. Favorite quote: Yogi Berra, "If you don't know where your going any road will take you there!"
You all sound like a facinating bunch of people!

Returned to quality in February 2006 (it was quality control when I was hurt, now it is quality assurance, a paradigm shift  )
7. Your pet peeve in quality: not just quality related, but I hear "not my job" a bit too much
8. If you could change the world of quality, what would you do? make people want to do more than "git r done"

dsmith45 7th November 2006, 07:41 AM As a 26-year veteran of automotive quality, please allow me to join you in your desire to have a System that works for you, not vice versa. Likewise may I comfort you in the pet peeve arena - those that violate the System we so dearly configure and then get angry (mostly because they got caught!) show their lack of maturity in accepting the responsibility to correct what they did and move on! Accountability when matched with responsibility and authority can drive continuous improvement, but must be driven.
wayner 7th November 2006, 09:13 PM Hello...I'm wayner, 66yo, & retired. I purchased a new coolsat 4000 pro ONE
YEAR AGO and walked away after about 2 months. I connected it to a DTV
dish (to whom I had been a suscriber to for about 4-5 years).
My aim was to scan the satellite spectrum to just see what was out there,
(much like listening to short wave which I did 46 years ago when I got of the
Navy (I was a communications technician)).
First off, the manual was very skimpy. After hooking it up I was able to ac-
cess the Menu, scan for satellites, view the sig strengths/quality, (went
thru the whole menu continuously} and after finishing/restarting got the
same screen with the message: NO CHANNEL (exclamation point).
Let me say that the vendor who sold me this item (for about $32x.00) was
of NO help whatsoever. His reply was a two and one half automated eMail
reply telling me that I should consult the various Inet User groups, which
I had been doing for about 5 months while at work (M-8am) before I had
purchased the reciever.
So my reason for writing now is : Maybe one of you very knowledgable (and
compasionate readers out there) could guide me on after the point I have
reached: N O C H A N N E L S
Many thanks, .....wayner (defolik@exciteemail address edited.com)
Any replies appreciated.

My name is Michaël Maunier and I am French.
I work in the quality department and I have in charge quality issues with a customer named Ford . There is not a long time that I am in this job but I realy enjoy it . I have a great experience of the factory and in others services .( production, method, development, industrialisation, . :applause: . .)
My compagny make some belts, tensioners, decoupling pulleys, . . . and we are based in France close to Tours. We are 500 employes on our plant.
I know that i have to improve my english, and at the meantime i want to get a lot of informations about quality in my new job.
The first thing that I see is that we don't have realy good informations about customers requirements . Exchanging point of view on a furom like this one will probably help me a lot.
Anyway : the time is never lost when you give it to somebody else.
I'm now ready to share .

Bill Frazier 20th November 2006, 09:45 AM Hello everyone,
My name is Bill Frazier and I operate a small training company that focuses on quality (specifically Six Sigma, ISO, Lean, 5S and all the softer skills that go into making all that come to pass.)
I have been in the quality business for over 30 years and have seen some really scary stuff as well as some pretty darn good stuff too.
I really enjoy this business and would like to see more organizations reap more from good quality management practices.
My unique item is that I am also a writer and am currently involved in a project about the 1860's in Georgia.
I look forward to chatting with all of you and wish each of you the best.

zoucat 1st December 2006, 02:12 AM hello, everyone
I like this forum, but I have never say anywords since I rigistered. I just want to know you how to do the qualtiy work in your company. Sometimes, the quality work is very difficult for me, especial communicated with the people who totally don't understand the quality work. They always think you just like a police (this words id told by our material manager!)! The job is watch their work and look for trouble! And many times, they would think the qulaity system just a fake frame, it can't really work! So, I'm very boring! What can I do?

Mike Harris 5th December 2006, 03:52 AM Hello all,
My name is Mike and I am the QA manager at Algatechnologies located on Kibbutz Ketura in Israel. We grow algae in closed glass systems for the production of Astaxanthin which the algae produce when stressed. I have lived here on the Kibbutz for 28 years and have 5 kids. I only started working in QA a year and a half ago and completed at QA course at the Israeli Standards Institute. We are ISO9001-HACCP-GMP certified and it is my responsability to upkeep these standards. Next year we are going to be audited on the basis of ISO 22000 and I joined the forum to share the experience of the changover with people who have already "converted".
Mike Harris 5th December 2006, 04:03 AM From Mike in Israel. True to form for a QA professional, I ignored the form I was supposed to use to submit info. Now I will have to see why this happened, determine how it won't happen again, make sure everyone in the organisation knows I am an idiot, try filling in the form again in 6 months and see if I learned my lesson.

8. If you could change the world of quality, what would you do?
Eric York 7th December 2006, 09:46 AM 1. Name - Eric York
2. Job Title or explanation of what you do
Title - "Automotive Fab Support Manager" (How's that for avoiding the word "Quality"? :notme: ) Basically started as QA focussed on automotive products and standards, which morphed into QA Manufacturing while I wasn't looking.
3. Industry you're in or have been in
Semiconductor Manufacturing
4. Company you work for and location
A major semiconductor designer, developer, manufacturer and foundry. Based at a site in France.
5. Length of time in quality function
A few months! I'm one of those operationals (process engineer, product engineer, project manager, PE mgr) that made "the jump". :mg:
6. Something personal that sets you apart
Motivation, incessant desire to continue to learn. (My own personal CIP!)
7. Your pet peeve in quality
Gee where do I start? If we restrict ourselves to 1 and only 1 peeve, it would have to be the prevalent misconceptions of (or perhaps more accurately, blatant refusal to fully consider) what QA is really meant to accomplish.
8. If you could change the world of quality, what would you do?
A bit premature to change the world. I'll start by working to improve my little corner of it, including perspectives of those I work with. ;)

Chris1973 11th December 2006, 10:09 AM Here's my attempt:
My name is Chris Watson.
I'm employed as a QA Specialist (middle manager), previous titles include SQA Engineer, APQP Eng and just the general QA Engineer. I lead a team of quality profesionals. Our primary goals are continued certification - TS16949, ISO9000, ISO14001 and CE marking, undertaking of the internal audit programme and support for all business processes to ensure effectiveness and continuous improvement.
I'm currently in the steel industry, based in Newport and Port Talbot in Wales (United Kingdom). I have previously have had 15 years experiance with tier 1 automotive suppliers, where my customers have been German / German owned or Japanese. I've travelled extensively through Europe (Germany - Baden / Bavaria, Spain, France, Italy, Poland, France, Switzerland, Austria and the Czech Rep), North America (Ohio, Mich and Ontario) and Japan (Nagoya and Toyota city), and I speak a good level of German.
Personal interests are mountainbiking and beers of this world.
My pet peeve in quality is how organisiations make quality complicated mainly by the use of terminology that frightens the life out of non quality based people. And if I could I would give the tier 1 - tier 2 supplier base a much louder voice to force the OEM's to commonise global working practices / customer requirements - can you imagine the cost benefit this could possibly bring?
Look forward to hearing from some of you.
:lmao:

snowflake80 13th December 2006, 01:28 AM Hi Everyone!
My name is Linda and I'm a QC Analyst for a start up biotech company in San Diego. I graduated from a university in '03 and have been in Quality for the last 3 years.
My first "quality" project was performing a 510K study for a medical IVD product. I also wrote the report and the product was approved by the FDA. So began my career in Quality. I also have cancer. I was diagnosed when I was 24.
One pet peeve is the lack of respect Quality gets. If something goes wrong, it's always quality's fault.
I agree with many of you. If I could change the world of quality, I would have everyone rotate to see what it's like to do another person's job.
Thank you everyone for sharing your advice and knownledge. I have lots and lots to read and learn. :bigwave:
Geier 13th December 2006, 03:45 AM Hi there, I'm Siegfried Schmitt, working for GE Healthcare as the global Quality Director in IT
I started off as a production chemist in Fine Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals manufacture in 1989, then spent several years as consultant before joining Amersham, which is now part of GE. My office is in Amersham near London, UK, but I travel quite a bit, and my team is located on 3 continents.
When I'm really bored sitting in hotel rooms I tend to write articles or books.
I get really annoyed when people don't update the Table of Contents in their quality documentation.
My wish is that we'd use more automated tools to manage quality.

Like another on this thread, I am young (27) and offered the position of being responsible for getting my company up to speed on ISO 9001: 2000. And am learning as I go. All of the businesses I have worked for in the past have already been registered, so I am quite familiar with how it all actually works. I have just never had to "write" any of it myself.
6. My pet peeve... right now is, not getting anywhere on getting answers for pressing question I have with ISO certification/registration.
7. What I would change: Everyone's understanding, here at my company, of what ISO actually is.
Glad that I found this website. Seems like I will get all of my questions answered here!!

Quality Girl 18th December 2006, 08:40 AM 1. Name
Clare
2. Job Title or explanation of what you do
Quality Management Coordinator: management of improvement projects to better compliance and functionality of our quality system
3. Industry you're in or have been in
Pharmaceutical Manufacturing, but previously medical device and contract research
4. Company you work for and location
BIG pharma company in the UK
5. Length of time in quality function
In this role just 2 weeks, but in quality as a whole 6.5 years
6. Something personal that sets you apart
I'm always a cheery soul - always!
7. Your pet peeve in quality
a) Lack of buy-in from the shop floor.
b) Enormous hulking beast of a quality system that has grown over years and has the got the company so bogged down that they can't see a way to change/get out of it.
8. If you could change the world of quality, what would you do?
It's such a bug part of all industry, universities should make it part of their degree courses (not stand-alone, but a module in each discipline) so that graduates coming to industry have an insight to what the quality function is and how it relates to the science of their role.

MtlGuy 19th December 2006, 10:37 AM Hello All,
I just want to start by saying what a great resource this site has been, especially for a newbie to Quality management and Regulatory affairs like myself. I figured I'd been lurking long enough and that it was time to introduce myself.
1. My name is Francois
2. My title is Quality Management Systems Manager, which is quite funny since I have no prior QMS or regulatory affairs experience, but I'm ready to learn!
3. I currently work for a company that produces medical imaging software for clinics and hospitals.
4. I won't mention the company name, but we are located in Montreal, Canada.
5. As eluded to in #2, I am new to this position (1 mth) and am hoping to be a 'quality' quality manager within 6 months (is that too ambitious?).
6. I can't really think of anything that sets me apart for now.
7. I don't really know enough about quality yet to get peeved.
8. The only thing I want to change in the world of quality for now is my level of understanding.
I have no burning questions yet, but with a surveillance audit scheduled for February, I'm sure I'll posting again early in the new year.
Thanks everyone for the great questions and answers!

TwoEds 20th December 2006, 05:36 PM Hi Covers,
My name is Ed. My screen name comes from a paraphrase of an old saying -- yes, it's "Two Eds are better than one."
I am an independent consultant in Quality Management Systems. My academic background is in Electrical Engineering and Telecommunications. My early experience in electronics and software design evolved into project management. Being a project manager made me aware of the need for quality systems. Since 1993 I have been working with quality systems in various capacities -- registration program manager, lead internal auditor, procedure writer, training developer and provider, process improvement team leader. My main area of expertise is ISO 9001; I also have worked with TL-9000, the Capability Maturity Model for Software, and the Baldrige Criteria. More recently, I've been exposed to CMMI, ISO/TS 16949 and ISO 13485.
I am semi-retired, so in between consulting contracts I have time for instructing college students in computer literacy, programming computers to play board games, playing soccer, and being a husband, father, and homemaker.
I believe that two people who always agree with each other have little to learn from each other -- in other words, disagreement is a learning opportunity for one or both parties. There seems to be a lot of learning opportunities in the forums, so maybe I'll drop in from time to time to join the banter.

Michael Darby 5th January 2007, 05:32 PM Hi Folks!
My name is Michael Darby and I am a senior level executive search consultant (okay 'recruiter'....sometimes known as a 'headhunter'), I work primarily on a retained basis and tend to take on clients who are globally positioned, mostly in light industrial manufacturing, but have been recently indoctrinated into the world of Medical Devices.
Occasionally, I may need to post an active and bona fide position- I do not phish!
Home for me is beautiful Vancouver, Washington USA-just outside Portland and my clients tend to be in areas of the US OUTSIDE of the pacific northwest. Its just the way it is!
Hope everyone is getting the new year off the a great start!

ChemEng 7th January 2007, 06:55 PM Hi. Just registered. In the thread, someone said the best QA folks have scar tissue from ops. I must be a good candidate for the best. Have a Chemical Engineering background working since the 70's in manufacturing glass, paper, coating, pigments, chemical testing equipment, and now medical testing equipment. I've been listed among the best in technical customer service and technical sales, but what I know about quality has been in bits and pieces. That said, I have a lot to learn. My current job in a small company includes a BIG chunk of quality. I want to put it together and fill the gaps.

Cindy Guenette 8th January 2007, 08:26 PM Hello, I'm new just signed up and would like to start a topic on ESD requirements for automotive companies? Where do I start?
thanks
winchm 8th January 2007, 08:37 PM go to http://www.esda.org/ for lots of information and freebees. An expensive but excellent book is ESD Program Management - A Realistic Approach to Continuous Measurable Improvement in Static Control by G. Theodore Dangelmayer - one of the best investments we have made is in using continuous desktop monitors - light and sound indicatiors when disconnecting from workbench eliminates the daily logs.
Marc 8th January 2007, 08:44 PM Hello, I'm new just signed up and would like to start a topic on ESD requirements for automotive companies? Where do I start?
thanks
Well, you start by navigating to the forum you want to post in. Now, the question becomes Which Forum? Sometimes there are clear choices, other times a question may fit in more than one forum, and in other cases it doesn't seem to fit in any specific forum. Just take your best shot. If one of the moderators or I think it should be in a different forum we'll move it. Not a big deal.
Then you simply start a new thread in the forum you chose. See How To Ask A Question or Start a Conversation by Starting a New Discussion Thread in a Forum (http://elsmar.com/Forums/showthread.php?t=18980) for details.
Other forum help is here: How To Use the Forum Software - Basic Instructions (http://elsmar.com/Forums/forumdisplay.php?f=86).
There isn't really a forum ESD shoehorns in, but the Other Specifications, Standards, and related Requirements (http://elsmar.com/Forums/forumdisplay.php?f=43) might be a good place.

BTW, in your first attachment you have the following statement;
There is an urban myth that procedures must spell out everything in minute detail “... in case someone falls under a bus”.
Our most recent ISO Auditor's favorite version of this "urban myth" was - "...in case someone gets run over by a lottery ticket".
...just thought I'd share that thought.

RCBeyette 16th January 2007, 01:49 PM Welcome onboard to all the newcomers...don't forget about the buffet on the Promenade Deck, served daily from 4pm - 7pm. ;)
6. What exactly is a Systems Manager?
This is not the forum to answer questions such as this, but if hopefully my response will either answer your question or point you in the right directon for posting the question in the proper forum.
A Systems Manager can mean one of two things, depending on the context in which it is used:
(1) IT related...responsible for managing information technology aspects (hardware and/or software), including staff, contractors, programming, etc.
(2) Business Management Systems related...responsible for managing the ongoing development and evolution (aka improvement) of the BMS tools which could include concepts such as ISO 9001, ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001, ISRS, Sarbanes-Oxley, TPM, TQC, etc.

I think he was being facetious – I checked his Profile that’s his title.
wellshorton 16th January 2007, 02:06 PM Sorry for the misunderstanding. My job title is Systems Manager and I hear countless times, “What is a Systems Manager.” My other stock answer to what I do is play in the space where IT and QA overlap.

EtobiLad 16th January 2007, 05:38 PM Nano Nano,
Glad to finally registered, I've looked into the threads and have been a great help in developing our ISO 9001:2000 documentation.
Situated over here is Hollywood North (that would be TORONTO, CANADA). Just 2 hours north from Buffalo New York for the geograpically challenged.
Looking forward to discuss and able to contribute.
Cheers you all!
EtobiLad :tg:
Guess its time to update the post here, just for fun. Looking back on what the cove had meant to me and briefly fill the thread by greenraisin since I have not done that.

I like Randy's comments. Check mine under profiles
Who gave this word a bad name anyhow?
Improve yourself, why go for the stars.
Where can you find or learn, apply ideas from such a broad and limitless as people minds and we have demonstrated it here at the cove. Perhaps start a thread on the "most memorable experience here on the cove".. :bighug:
Howard Lee 16th January 2007, 07:17 PM Please excuse me, I've promised to be kind but I just gotta ask something.
You're a CQE and you don't know what a "Turtle" is?
Just to get you caught up. I made cut score for the CQE on December 2, 2006. It is well earned. Most of my quality background is in metrology and statistics. I was a technician on the production floor for many years. The company I was working for began it's "ISO Implementation Initiative" in 1995. I was scheduled for auditor training sometime in the middle of June 1995. On June 6, 1995 I was in an automobile accident and I have spent most of the last eleven years recovering from a traumatic brain injury.
I was once told that the first step in learning was to admit ignorance. This is what I have done. I had seen and used diagrams like the ones that winchm posted but I had never called them turtles. Forgive me if my question was too basic for this forum.
If you are interested in more details of my indoctrination in the world of quality, you might look for Quality Control and Brain Damage. It will be in the Quality in the First Person column of Quality Progress. I believe that the editor told me the March 2007 issue.
Marc 16th January 2007, 07:35 PM Forgive me if my question was too basic for this forum.
My personal apologies. Your question is not too basic for this forum. Basic questions are welcomed by everyone.
Don't pay any mind to Randy. It's Randy's habit to jump the gun now and again, and make invalid assumptions.
Howard Lee 16th January 2007, 08:11 PM Thanks Marc. Basic questions are welcomed by everyone.
I ask a lot of basic questions still and I might have once called them things turtles, I don't remember. You forget lots of things if you hit your head hard enough. I remember when I found out for sure that the nice lady that brought me banana pudding on Sundays really was my mother.:tg:
Maybe someone should show Randy what happens when you assume too freely. (I would, but the censor blocked me, maybe a exception could be made for this case)
winchm 16th January 2007, 08:30 PM :thanx: Both BVQi and SAI Global (XLP) training used the term Turtle in ISO9001 Process Audit Training sessions - it is based on the foot print pattern blocks. I'm not sure it was always called "Turtle" some others call them process maps. I think this discussion thread is tied into another one. As for Randy - I'm pretty sure he is one of Uncle Sam's Magnificent Children and they tend to be a bit harder then most of us. If you check some of his other responses you'll see he does contribute to the information bank so chalk this one up - The only dumb question is the one not asked. Way to go with the CQE - I look forward to March QP article.:applause:

jane_ackerman 26th January 2007, 01:30 PM Wow! It's amazing how long this post has been going. Just found it so here goes...
1) My name is Jane Ackerman
2) Like many of you, I wear numerous hats. My current title is Quality Supervisor. I am the also the Gage Technician in one of our plants and I'm over both plant's calibrations systems as a whole. I also write all the Hertzler/Gainseeker programs for SPC data collection and crunch all the PPAP and capability data. I could go on, but I won't - you get the idea.
3) I am in the automotive industry - camshafts
4) I work for Asimco Technologies in Grand Haven, MI
5) I have been in Quality for 13 yrs.
6) I believe my diversity sets me apart from others.
7) My pet peeve is lack of personal responsibility.
8) I feel the world of quality would improve if we simply involve more people in the decision making process - if mfg. feels they were a part of the decision, they are so much more likely to buy-in and support it.
katschance 26th January 2007, 02:07 PM I am trying to figure out how to use this site. I am very new to QA and manufacturing and very excited about the belief of putting quality into our company. But I am sooo frustrated with employees just wanting to do the minimum to try and pass the ISO certification. I have so much to learn and I am excited about the answers I will find from all of you in these forums. Thank you so much for your valid information.
MGoodson 26th January 2007, 03:36 PM My name is Miriam Goodson and I am very new to quality. I am currently searching for strong, reputable training so I can pass my enthusiasm on to others!

katschance 26th January 2007, 04:41 PM Thank you all so much for answering my questions. I am pretty overwhelmed right now. I am a little concerned about having to start over from the beginning. ISO can be confusing.
Thank you

Thank you

Kathy:
Don't be too intimidated. If you have a good quality system and just "say what you do", you'll probably end up with most of the bases covered. Don't fall into the trap of "papering yourself into a corner" with too much documentation and you'll be OK.
The Covers are all here to answer questions and point you in the right directions. Don't be timid about asking questions. You may get the occasional wisecrack,:notme: but you'll also get invaluable advise!:agree1:
Good Luck -Steve:bigwave:
John Huheey 28th January 2007, 01:43 PM Well...Hello
1. Name: John Huheey
2. Job Title: President, CFO, COO -Its a small company :o
3. Industry: Private Investigations/Consulting
4. Company: Secure Systems Group, Ltd.
5. Time in Quality: I am not a Quality Professional like most who venture to the Cove, but I spent 25 years as a Federal Agent investigating companies that provided non-conforming products to the DoD, so I have a good appreciation for the work that you do. Now I operate a company that provides investigative support to law firms that Represent Whistleblowers who file complaints (Qui Tam lawsuits) against companies supplying nonconfroming material to state and federal agencies. We also perform Due Diligence Investigations to assist our clients in evaluating businesses they are purchasing or considering for use as vendors/suppliers. In both of those activities we use ISO Registered Quality Auditors to assist in our inquiries.
6. What sets me apart: Hmmm, I guess its he fact that I view QA Systems in a somewhat different light than most people because I have seen how such systems can be abused to misrepresent the quality of products being produced. A QA System means nothing if company managers have no ethical standards.
7. Pet Peeve: The fact that most companies rely on vendor certifications as the sole basis for acceptance of material.
8. What Would I Change: Any system in which the QA and Engineering Managers work for Manufacturing or Sales Executives :D
:thanx: John

jdblair 1st February 2007, 09:59 AM My background in manufacturing began as a metallurgical tech. (1983 – 1986) working for a company that supplied tungsten carbide bits for oilfield drilling. In 1986 I went to work for an automotive company (aluminum wheel division) working in their metallurgical lab (1986 – 1990) doing destructive testing (tensile testing), non-destructive testing (x-ray & fluoroscopic exams), metallurgical exams, and industrial spectrometry analysis. I then went to work in our metrology lab (1990 – 1996) where I performed 1st article inspections, CMM programming, and gage calibration. In 1997 I began working in the engineering dept. (1997 – 2001) as a CAD designer, doing 2d drafting and 3d modeling using ProEngineer software.
In 2001 I transferred to our Kentucky facility to take a Design Engineer position. In 2002 a decision was made to close this facility. At that time I decided to change careers to the Health Field. I graduated from a Radiography Program in 2005, and took national boards with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (ARRT) in Radiography and passed, earning the designation R.T. (R). I then applied to a Radiation Therapy Program and graduated in 2006. After graduation I took my ARRT boards in Radiation Therapy and passed, earning the designation R.T. (R) (T). Due to a lack of Radiation Therapy positions at this time in Kentucky, I have accepted a position as an atomotive interior/exterior supplier as a CMM Operator/Designer.

Ron28 6th February 2007, 06:05 AM Hi All,
My name is Ron and I'm currently working as QA Group leader in an
Oil Company in the Netherlands. I'm some 15 years with the company
and I am responsible for maintaining the Companies ( European) supplier list and in-house technical standards. As such I coordinate and conduct plant surveys verifying the manufacturer's Quality system and technical capabilities.
In my spare free time I'm an amateur musician, who loves to fool around with guitars, keyboards and computers in an attempt to produce some (jazz) music.
If I could change the world of quality, I would pursue the delinkage of cost and delivery time from the product/material Quality, as to ensure that the product really complies with client specifications.
It's great to see that there are actual good quality forums in this world, hence my subscription.

A pet peeve is something that really bothers you (probably something that is commonly done) Such as, my pet peeve is people who think that the QMS applies only to product quality not our business as a whole.

Canyon Karen 16th February 2007, 03:44 PM Well, the canyon is certainly worth seeing. It's even better if you get a pass and just wander around in the bottom of it! I must confess to the fact that we did have a bit of snow this year. 2 inches and the schools shut down. It only lasted one day. There is still snow on top of Mt Lemmon, and it's just a drive up the hill from Tucson.

Hi Aaron,
I noticed you work for a Medical Device Company. I recently was hired at as very small start up Medical Device Co. We received our ISO 13485 certification but we have a minor in Software Validation.
I was wondering if I could pick your brain on that topic?
I am also new to this site so I am not sure how to take this to a new thread so to speak. If I could get some guidance I would appreciate it.
I have gone through the post attachments list on Software Validation but it seems to be a sparse subject.
I would appreciate any help on the subject.
Thanks in advance.

sevugan 24th February 2007, 08:46 AM Hi everone,
I am Alan Sevugan. I am a practising Consultant. I have been involved in Quality and Productivity for more than 20 years.
I quite regularly visit this EC forum for broadening my knowledge, and, also to hear views from others who are involved/associated in these fields. I really find this forum very interesting and useful. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Marc and his team for their efforts.
Industries start off with the intention of producing 100% good quality units. There is no motive to produce "reject" units. However due to number of variables during design/manufacturing there is no way they can produce 100% good units all the time and every time. The Company knows that; the Customers tell them, they accept it faithfully; however here we find some smart CB Auditors just walk in and without even having understood the operations and limitations, give lectures on Quality based on Standards developed by the so called experts, without looking at the basics. What's most important is "the culture of Quality". Quantity is eqully important. CB's cannot use the same yardstick that they are using for an MNC be used for a small Company.
I wrote an article on Quality in the 80s for a leading English daily. I introduced a term "QUANLITY", Quantity with Quality. Because Quantity cannot be separated. We have to look at both in the same perspective.
My request here is the CB Auditors and the so called experts who drafted the Standards must actively participate in this EC forums and other similar forums and get the views and opinions to enrich themselves. Alan

7. Your pet peeve in quality: Too many standards. Based on what I've seen/been told.
8. If you could change the world of quality, what would you do? Cut out duplicate standards, like removing the ISO screw standards (which arn't that good) and keeping the ANSI ones. Actually for that matter if I only had to use ANSI type standards it would be great!
Found this forum looking for ANSI B89.1.10 Standards (I know ANSI and ASME has them on their websites but at 41$ US for 26 pages it seems like its a tad expensive) because I'm interested in Tooling and Measuring building/repair. :)
