MajorBVNaik 2nd March 2007, 06:55 AM Dear Sir,
I read your thoughts. I could not agree more even though I am a CB auditor for nearly ten years. I am an ex-Army officer who took voluntary retirement after twenty one years. I on panel of ten certification bocies. I conducted ISO 9001 & 14001 audits.
However it seems to me that unfortunately you have met the CB auditors like the ones you described. But let me assure you that all of us are not like that. That is why I am interacting with you as soon as I read your thoughts. I would love to be friends & interact with you as well as other like minded people on any forum
Regards
Major BV Naik

2. Job Title or explanation of what you do:
Presently a full time student at Kettering University —GM Technical Education Program Master of Science for Manufacturing Operations. I’m also a member of the SME, ASQ and an ASQ certified quality engineer since 2005.
3. Industry you're in or have been in:
Mostly automotive. I’ve specialized in engineering solutions for the sustained improvement of quality and productivity. I’ve functioned as an IE, quality engineer, quality technician, and performed some quality system auditing.
4. Company you work for and location:
I’ve worked in southeast Michigan for GM and for suppliers to Ford, GM, Chrysler, et al.
5. Length of time in quality function:
I’ve kept a focus on quality engineering for many years. Academically, I’ve studied in quality science going on ten years now —there’s never enough to learn about quality!
6. Something personal that sets you apart:
What probably sets me apart is a solid background in the science of human behavior. I am very good with people and relate well to our problems which ultimately begin and end with ourselves.
7. Your pet peeve in quality:
So many spend a great deal of time emphasizing a process focus. I feel however, like Dr. Deming, that we must be wholly conscious of the greater system of processes if we are to be truly effective in achieving and sustaining competitive advantage.
8. If you could change the world of quality, what would you do?
I feel there is too little education and training that should make up a core feature of every job function. Leaders too often forego education and hurry training, this having the devastating effects of which we are all too familiar. My modus of operation is to ensure that everyone functioning within the system has the opportunity to develop the proper orientation, education, training, and on-the-job experience necessary to achieve and sustain competitive advantage.

At the time, Randy's comment reminded me of the story Bess Truman used to tell regarding her husband, President Harry Truman:
President Truman was noted for his plain ways and "direct language."
At a luncheon one day, Bess reported, some of the women approached Bess and said, "Oh, Mrs. Truman, we love your husband but his language is so coarse. He keeps using terms like 'horse manure.' Can't you talk to him to use language more befitting the President?"
"My dears," Bess replied, "it took me twenty years to get him to say manure!"

Didos Lament 26th March 2007, 01:42 PM Greetings All!
Ooh, I like the emoticons ---> in particular the 'mad rant'...'no pity' and keep in line. although the pity violin is a bit large.
Obviously I'm new on this forum, but I've been in the engineering or compliance laboratory many years and the calibration undertakings for several years in one capacity or another.
I presently manage a cal lab in the states, but we are internal only for the factory/service depts and ANSI Z-540 accredited. One of my to-do's is 17025 as we are seeing more requests for our products at this QS level.
I google hunted the topic of 'ISO 17025 Waiver' and found this site, but most of the 'waiver' threads are 2001. I will post a query on the subject here shortly.
I am hopeful to be of help as some of you will be to me.

I recently was hired as the Quality Manager here at Kennedy Valve in Elmira, NY. My focus is to implement a quality management system here, but until then I just run around and put out "hair fires" all over the plant! :frust:
Kennedy Valve has been in the area for 125 years and manufactures fire hydrants and water valves. We have our own foundry, machine shop and assembly area in-house.
Prior to coming to Kennedy Valve I worked at Lockheed Martin as an Inspection Supervisor for 16 months, at OSRAM Sylvania as a Production Supervisor for 13 months, and at Schweizer Aircraft as an Inspection Supervisor for 4 years. Prior to all that, I served in the United States Marine Corps for 20 years. While there I was a CH-46 helicopter mechanic and crewchief. I also ran a Planned Maintenance Department, Flight Line, and Quality Assurance Department. And for three years I was a Detachment Commander in charge of Marines at two American Embassies in Rangoon, Burma and Vienna, Austria.
I like to hunt, fish, play golf and read (John Jakes is a favorite). I play bass guitar and am a progressive rocker from the 70s! You'll find me listening to bands like Rush, Pink Floyd, Yes, ELP, Led Zepplin, etc... most of the time.
If I have a pet peeve in quality it is the "it's good enough" attitude that most everyone has. If the part had a print drawn for it, then follow the print! I don't care if it's a part for an F-22 or an ashtray. Aim for nominal and be mindful of your tolerances.

Chua Kwan Teng 30th March 2007, 04:25 AM Hi PeaceWong
I hope you enjoy working in Flextronics
I am a Trainer and Consultant and had been to Flextronics ZhuHai in Year 2003 training VE for your Design team

peacewong 30th March 2007, 04:33 AM Hello KT,
Could you tell me what the VE is? Now I'm implementing Lean in Flextronics, certainly, you know that Flextronics did not know Lean before last year.
Regards
Peace :thanx:
Chua Kwan Teng 30th March 2007, 04:48 AM Dear PeaceWong
Oh... VE Stand for Value Engineering. This is a Design Tool in which the Design and Development Engineers make us of this technique to design a product with less parts, more functions. Or same number of parts as in the old design but more function.
I though Flextronics had employed a Lean Black Belt in Y2003 to implement lean.
I also conduct training for companies in Six Sigma or Lean Six Sigma in Singapore and China Wuxi. We have office in ShenZhen at NamShan.
You can look into the website ecciinternational.com/sg
Thanks and regards
KT Chua
peacewong 30th March 2007, 05:00 AM Dear KT,
Sorry for my mistake. I don't familiar with this company before I joined in. You're the eldest specialist on Lean & Six Sigma in Flextronics? For past three 3 years, I worked as an industrial engineer in Delphi. You realize that there are many differences on lean between Delphi and Flextronics. Do you work in Flextronics now?
Regards
Peace
Charles Scott 30th March 2007, 04:34 PM I have been a long time lurker on this board, and have found it a great source to spark thinking. A little bit about myself:
My name is Charles Scott and I am a Master Black Belt / Quality Manager for American Express. I am located in Greensboro NC.
I have worked my entire career in services, starting at Walt Disney World, where I worked my way through college (BS and MS in Industrial Engineering) including stints in WDW's IE dept and Finance dept. I have been with Amex 11 years, primarily as an IE, but involved with quality since 1999.
On a personal note nobody would ever guess that I am half Brasilian and love the music, food and culture of Brasil.
My personal pet peeve in quality is using quality tools to justify decisions already made, instead of using quality tools to unlock the potential.
If I could change one thing about the world of quality, it would have to be to make non-quality people realize that we are actually a fun loving lot. :)
maxim 30th March 2007, 09:12 PM Holla all, my name is Peter.

Anfield Red 2nd April 2007, 06:41 AM Hi All this is Anfield Red here!! (This is in reference to Liverpool Football Club for those not in the know)
I am currently applying for a contractor position in an electromagnetics firm so thought I would take the time to do some catchup on this subject as it has been some time since I have used ISO 18001 (or BS8800 / ISO 14001 Etc...)
Just to say what a great site and it looks as though there are some highly knowledgeable people out there - I will definately be returning to pick some of the brains - especially on the electromagnetic front.....:)
Nice to meet everyone... "You'll Never Walk Alone"

6. Something personal that sets you apart- 6 foot Asian American...LOL...nobody can tell but they all look at me and wonder, "What is he?". In today's PC world, it's just not possible to ask any more
7. Your pet peeve in quality- Too often I discover "Manufacturing Rejects" are placed in quality (i.e., one is too many) both up & down the external chain from me. Bad idea, they can hurt you twice as much there...well, unless you ignore your quality people anyway
8. If you could change the world of quality, what would you do? Go to the "proof is in the pudding" concept. Instead of telling everyone how to comply with your quality requirements, expending great energy with systems definition & compliance inspection beyond bare minimum, we should all focus more on examining the results (the product) and seriously track results...then reward those who deliver a quality product (meets all requirements/specs) with more work and absolutely cut off those who do not get the job done. "That's all I got to say about that"

Just a few pointers:
Don't hesitate to ask a question
Don't hesitate to offer an opinion in any thread
Be sure to weigh different opinions; none of us is 100% correct 100% of the time - often there will be conflicting opinions - it's the nature of an open Forum.
It's OK to "lurk" - no one will force you to post either questions or answers. In no time at all, YOU will be "old hand" welcoming newbies!
dendy 8th April 2007, 05:44 PM New to this forum and was also wondering if posting messages and replying to questions is a good way to study and get experience from this forum to write the CQE exam. Are other CQE exam forum members taking this approach?

Job Title: Quality Inspector - coordinator, (BScEE)

Length of Time: 3 years
Personal: I have taken quality as my mission to make alot of things better, including: advancing personal aptitude.
Pet Peeve in quality: Is this part good?
Change the world of quality, what would I do? -Everyone should be trained and made aware of quality regardless of their status in life. Even as kids when you share that jelly sandwich, you better make sure it is not overflowing or has too little jelly otherwise the other kid might not like it and he will comment on it and your friends will laugh and there goes the neighbourhood; just an example. Quality done the right way will make things better. Its impossible not to. I attribute alot of quality failures with human failure. "Fail to plan is like planning to fail"
The imperfection in humans: we gather information therefore we don't think with the same pattern of thought. I wish we were all robots... but that wouldn't be good either.

I am currently doing my part time Master research in Quality Management System implementation in Malaysia Industrial.
I am looking for help on "process approach" for internal auditing. As recent ISO 9001:2000 surveillance audit, the registrar auditor comments that :
(i) Audit could be planned according to process, not per ISO 9001 elements
(ii) Process approach auditing skill was not clearly demonstrated
(iii) Audit note taking could be improved
I am thinking use the ISO/TS 16949 turtle diagram for the process approach, but how to use the turtle diagram? Any samples of particular process? for example: Internal auditing Process?

QA Manager for Triton Workshop Systems
I've been in a Senior management position for over 25 yrs and have just recently opted to focus on QA
This is a FANTASTIC place for a " Newbie " like me to gather information, it is going to be one of my most important tools in the days and weeks to come. I am implementing a QMS format and am looking for some real simple terminology for the various points of a QA manual as well as Procedures.
Thanks All
allanj-pwgsc 13th April 2007, 04:51 PM (Never noticed this before!) OK. Here goes:
1. Allan Johnston
2-5. Architectural Conservation Technologist. After many jobs, went back to school in my mid-30's, graduated with a diploma in Architectural Technology, specializing in heritage conservation (restoration in the USA). Worked in the private sector for a few more years, now in Canadian government (10 years). Among other functions and skills, I write and do quality review of construction specifications. Our unit in Public Works is a multidisciplinary group of engineers, architects, technologists and administrative support (50 or so people in all). We started working on a quality system in 1997, KPMG registered it in 1998, and we just passed another continuing assessment today (hence, I'm on Elsmar Cove looking for ideas). I have been the "Quality Team Leader" for the past 2 years. Did the Lead Auditor course through BSI in April 2005. In fact, Randy (above) was one of the two instructors. (He is very a good instructor, by the way.) The office I work in is located across the river from Ottawa -- Canada's capital.
6. Play guitar (like millions of other people, so that doesn't set me apart, does it) -- mostly for stress release. It works quite well.
7. Quality pet peeve . . . ? Running up against people who cannot see that a quality management system is in their best interest.
8. Change the world of quality . . . ? I probably need a few (30+?) more years in this field to come up with a "quality" opinion.
I've been dropping into Elsmar Cove since Randy gave the class the web address two years ago. I've found it a very good source of information and ideas to begin answering questions posed by Management, solving CIs and bringing Opportunities for Improvement to fruition.
If anyone has comments or questions about an A&E group with an ISO 9001:2000 quality management system, please feel free. (Please NOTE: my position as "management representative" is part time and subordinate to my other job functions, so I am usually only on Elsmar Cove a few times a year during our internal assessment periods, when I'm working on 'CI's or 'O for I's and the mad rush before each external audit.)
Thanks for the opportunity to look good to Management; hope I can return the favour [Canadian spelling ;o) ] someday.
Allan

RCBeyette 24th April 2007, 01:35 PM Woo hoo! Another crazy canuck! Welcome onboard, eh! (sorry, but my company is about to enter our North American group's probelm solving competition...so there's a fair amount of "canadiana" sweeping my site!)

So challenge your pet peeve! Help those around you to understand the important role of management systems.
Of course, if we don't thank ourselves first, we can't expect others to do so. (Good job, Roxane...good job...*pats self on back*) ;)

carolyn ja 26th April 2007, 04:27 PM Hi everyone,
My name is Carolyn and I am the quality assurance person at my company. I was hired unofficially for this position and may have lots of questions for all of you.
I work for a small manufacturing company in Northern Michigan. We manufacture Center Drills. I have been here for 10 years now and we have been registered to ISO for 5 of those years.
I am a 42 year old college student that wonders sometimes what the heck I was thinking when I became a student.
My pet peeve for quality is when people say "where was our ISO" whenever something went wrong.

My pet peeve for quality is when people say "where was our ISO" whenever something went wrong.
My Mother, the doctor (PhD, not the real kind) says, "Always learn, never stop learning, embrace learning. It keeps you young." She has retired from helping people and is studying horticulture at a technical school.
I don't hear "where was our ISO" but I have come to accept that quality and/or quality people will likely be the sacrificial goat when things go wrong.

raevynn23 27th April 2007, 10:22 AM Hello from Texas,
I have been lurking the forum for a while now trying to figure something out. I have recently been hired on as a psuedo quality administrator, to a non-existant quality manager. Make sense? No... it doesn't to me either.
Either way, I was hired at this company as a QC, just checking equipment before it went out the door at a calibration lab. Long story short, I got wrapped up in trying to get this company ISO 17025 certified.
I figured I would introduce myself before I start making a fool of myself asking questions which may seem common sense to alot of you. Please bare with me... I am learning.
I have already learned alot from visiting these forums but now it is time for me to start posting some specific questions that I have searched up and down for and cannot seem to find what I am looking for.
Well off I go... hope to hear from you as I post. Thanks in advance.

That's because we're expert firefighters!! The difficulty lies in teaching and training others to prevent fires. At least that's what Smokey the Bear says...and I admire that dude!

The name is Poll and I recently fell into a quality role by accident (my boss thought I'd be good at the job and I didn't run fast enough ;)). I have little/no knowledge of quality issues/thinking/systems/procedures/people/etc but I'm learning fast - and I do want to learn. It seems that after far too many years of waiting to grow up and discover what I wanted to be, I may have possibly found my niche.
I look forward to spending at least some of my learning journey with you all :tg:

curryassassin 11th May 2007, 09:28 AM Hi,
I'm Patrick, Quality Manager at a small contract testing laboratory (mainly blood samples from clinical trials) in Oxford, England.
I was bitten by the quality bug around 1990 and currently present many of the symptoms of quality management. I've worked in large, medium and small academic, pharmaceutical, medical device, animal vaccine and contract testing organisations. I love quality, perfection, consistency, problem resolution, improvement etc.
My peeve is managment that are not 100% verbally, physically, demonstrably committed to quality (maybe I have failed). I wish that everyone would realise that it is quality that makes the world go round, not money.
To ensure I maintain my infected state, I brew my own beer with honey !!!!
This site looks awesome (as my youngest daughter says).
Looking forward to enjoying your contributions and hope that I can offer something in return (beer does not travel).
Thank God for quality.

GaryMaile 29th May 2007, 12:58 PM Hi; I'm Gary Maile. I've been on the Cove in the past but changed jobs last year and am only just getting back on board. I'm the Quality Manager for a pharmaceutical packaging manufacturer - otherwise known as "we make toothpaste tubes"!! I've been in quality for nearly 24 years. I started in the research & development labs in a paper mill and got hooked on quality by accident! Anyway, I've already found a lot of very useful information and discussions so I'm looking forward to joining in some more of the "healthy debate" about the usual topics in the future.

Remember everyone, if you put an e-mail address into your posts, you invite a lot of spam from bots and spyders crawling the web. If you want people to e-mail you, make sure that you activiate that function in your User CP (left corner of nav bar on the site) and then refer to your profile, it's safer that way! Enjoy, and jump right in there, I'm sure you can all teach us a thing or two also.

I'm working as an internal auditor in one of the major banks in Türkiye. İnternal audit is a new term for my country. So, we're learning internal audit procedures by baby steps.
I'm reading the topics and I'm learning a lot of things. Thanks for everybıdy for contribution
Best regards
Ersin,
First let me say welcome to the Cove! I am certain that you'll find alot of helpful information here -- and if you don't see what you need, feel free to ask!
I just returned from Izmir, Turkey, having traveled there to teach an AS9100 Internal Auditing Course. I found the country to be exciting, the industry well developed and the interest in quality improvement a great thing.
Although there may be a shortage of AS9100 Instructors in the country, there are organizations with offices there who have access to qualified and competent resources always ready to travel.
For those of you who never considered Turkey as a destination for work or holiday, you would be well advised to reconsider. I found this to be one of the most beautiful places on our planet!

Wes Bucey 19th June 2007, 04:05 PM Welcome to all our newcomers!:bigwave:
I'm looking forward to the time you feel enough a part of our "family" to welcome other newcomers.
The one thing you'll learn here is we have continually recurring "themes" about Quality topics. The surprising thing is that, although the questions are similar, the ANSWERS change over time. Quality is based on some immutable themes, but new insights and technologies demand continual effort on the part of quality professionals to keep up with the changes to help their organizations stay competitive.
One of the best places for that continuing education is here in the Cove. Here's hoping you find it a valuable resource for your career!
Gracie 20th June 2007, 02:31 PM Well here it goes:
My name is Grace Gully
I am the Regulatory Affairs / Quality Assurance Manager for a company that distributes class II medical devices. We also have a laboratory that is one of the biggest in the country, we test for drugs of abuse and steroids in urine.
The company is Redwood Toxicology Laboratory, Inc. Santa Rosa, CA (heart of the wine country).
I have work on and off in Quality starting in 1978, starting will mil specs, ISO and now cGMP or CRF 820.
My pet peeves is that upper management dosen't seem to want to get involved with the quality system until an auditor shows up at the door.
I'm not sure what I would change about the quality system I just know that I would make it better and more stream line.
I am truly looking forward to joining this forum.
BillA 21st June 2007, 06:06 PM Hello, my name is Bill Asher.
I am a Supplier Quality Engineer in manufacturing. I have also been in the Building Materials and Automotive industries.
I am employed by FLOW International Corp (High-Pressure Pumps and Waterjet Cutting Equipment).
I have been involved in Quality for about 10 years, beginning with an ISO9001:1994 implementation while I was a Production Lead. I was very resistant to it, saw it as a waste of time and increased paperwork, but became a convert after I saw the tremendous improvements in quality and delivery that we experienced (my company took ISO VERY seriously!).
Pet Peeve: All the effort expended in the name of supplier qualification, then the contract is awarded on price alone.
If I could change the word of quality, it would be to convince Management that if you DO IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME, you will get better throughput, less waste, higher efficiency and productivity, on time delivery and, by the way, higher profits!

Climatecon 4th July 2007, 03:16 AM Hi to all.
My name is Con Giagtzis and I have joined your community today.
I am from Adelaide in South Australia.
Most of my career has been in the Automotive Industry (tier 1) until recently where I now am employed as a Quality Manager in a company which manufactures Heating and Cooling products and are exported globally.
My main role here is to introduce systems which have been in use throughout the automotive manufacturing sector but have not yet been embraced by other manufacturing areas.
It's a bit of a battle but hey, if your going to make an omelette, you have to break a few eggs!
Regards to all.

Wes Bucey 7th July 2007, 06:46 AM Welcome!:bigwave:
We all face challenges. The only difference may be whether we can successfully separate the challenges that matter from the ones that don't.
Re: rotating through the various positions
I worked summers and some nights while going through college at the big (1/2 billion $ yearly sales) steel distribution center where my dad worked. I worked almost every job in the warehouse except overhead crane operator (not good enough depth perception in qualifying test.) Working right along with me were the "management" trainees (really mostly sales trainees) who spent six months rotating through all the jobs in the warehouse so they had a good "feel" of what went on to get an order out the door. Together, we ran bar saws, plate burners, sheet shears, coil slitters, etc. Seemed to work (plus, once wearing their white collars, they retained rapport with the folks in the warehouse.) Helped me a lot in my own subsequent career to know what things were like working at ground zero.
The system sure separated the wheat from the chaff. There was about a 25% drop out rate before they graduated to a white collar.
Re: 6S, etc.
Good luck!
