Hello

My name is Tshepo and I am from South Africa.
I am employed by an automotive components manufacturing company - a global company, working as a Quality Customer Liaison.
I have been in the Quality depart ment for 6 years now and it has been fun.

What sets me apart - a beleive in people and simple methods used properly as a basic tool to solve even complex quality problems.
One of the changes, would be to make it a policy to begin all employees with the Quality department before progressing to departments of choice so that it is understood that Quality affects all and how serious it is.:applause::):):)

Just barge in and start new threads to put in your queries. The faqs (top blue bar) will tell you how to do it. Many a times the topic mught have already been discussed threadbare. There are veterans around here who will guide you to those discussions. Dont feel shy of drawing on their experience till you learn the ropes sufficiently.

Happy learning!

Good idea about the introduction thing

1. Gary MacLean
2. I am an independent consultant. I audit, set-up systems, document, train, problem solve, represent clients in audits and a whole bunch of other stuff according to whatever the client wants.
3. Industry you're in or have been in: Primarily automotive of course but some of many others as well; insurance, mortgage, medical, education, general industry.
4. Company you work for and location: Can't advertise so i will just say I am self employed in Michigan
5. Length of time in quality function: Over 35 years, I'm not saying how much over either, just over.
6. Something personal that sets you apart: I like working in production to get the feel of the product my client makes.
7. Your pet peeve in quality: Over-glamorization. Getting far too complex when the simple techniques of yesteryear work every bit as good.
8. If you could change the world of quality, what would you do?: Standardize as much as possible, the methods, approaches and techniques everyone uses.

Kewl idea. By the looks of things there are only about 180,000 Covers who have not yet completed this little questionnaire.

I'll give this a shot.

Name:
Freeda Hoeweler (very German)

Job Title or explanation of what you do:
My job title is Quality Engineering Technician, which is not representive of what I do. I pretty much maintain our QS registration. I am pretty much your average pee-on.

Industry your in or have been in:

We make metal and plastic components for a variety of different companies. Both automotive and non-automotive.

Company you work for & location:
I work for a machine shop in Southern Indiana (across the river from Louisville, KY). We occupy the old Louisville Slugger factory. Yes, until 5 years ago Louisville Slugger bats were made in Indiana.

Length of time in quality function: Unlike most you, I have pretty much started in the quality game. I have been in it for only 6 years.

Something personal that sets you apart: Not too much except, I am very tall and have a lot of red hair.

Your pet peeve in quality: My pet peeve is that upper management thinks that quality is the responsibility of the quality department. When they don't hold the mfg. department accountable for the quality of the parts they run.

If you could change the world of quality, what would you do: I'll have to get back with you on that one.
HI
I am doing a research on TS16949. Would it be possible to answer few question e.g
• Why organisation moving from QS-9000 to TS2
• What are issues lies in transition process?
• Why the difficulties are faces?
• How implementation/transition process can be improved?
• How effective TS2 in automobile industry?
what are problems or obstruction related to implement FMEA,MSA,PPAP,APQP?
If you can share your views I will very greatfull
Regards,
Manas

I have been in the world of Quality for 7 years. Relatively new on the block in comparison to some, that is why I am here. I have a drive to continuously learn more. So, this Patriot will ask questions. Thanks

Most welcome with your questions Sir.

On the same time, do offer your valuable comments to some of the other questions too :)

Welcome to the Cove :bigwave:

Welcome to the Cove!:bigwave:

Typically, we don't deal with the Quality or operations questions here in this Forum. I encourage you to start a new thread with a specific question - perhaps in the
Misc. Quality Assurance and Business Systems Related Topics (http://elsmar.com/Forums/forumdisplay.php?f=14)
thread. Plus, you should be aware weekends are typically slow here in the Cove but things pick up with lots of visitors and posts during the week.

Hello everyone!... I think it's now my turn! :)

1. Name: My name is Veronica Salazar

2. Job Title or explanation of what you do: I work as a Quality Engineer for the Engine Components segment of a Tier 1 company... although sometimes I think I work as firefighter (sad but true)!

3. Industry you're in or have been in: I hold a Bachelor of Science in Metallurgical Engineering degree from the Central University of Venezuela (UCV). Right before and after graduation I had the chance to work for a Tier 1 company in the automotive industry as an engineer trainee, doing a lot of cutting, polishing and microstructure analysis in the Met Lab. But I moved to the States with my husband almost 3 years ago and I'm currently working for another Tier 1 company in the automotive segment.

4. Company you work for and location: I work for a bearing company with plants all over the world. The specific plant I work for is located in the "Prettiest Town in Dixie" (just Google that and y'all find out where it is!).

5. I haven't been too long in the Quality area (just 4 years total... and counting!)

6. Something personal that sets me apart? I'm very much involved in parish activities with my husband (Bible studies, cathechisms, bulletin) which gives me balance in my personal life. I love reading spiritual uplifting books (Interior Castle - St. Teresa of Avila; works of John of the Cross, Faustina Kowalska, among others), but I also like to read fantasy and science fiction books (JRR Tolkien much celebrated LOTR saga, Isaac Asimov books and most recently J.K. Rowling). Reading it's my slow paced, relaxation hobbie, but I also love riding roller coasters.... maybe because it's kind of a stress reliever to scream your brain out while riding through a series of twists and turns at 60mph... and by the way, I have a cool collection of pictures of me and my husband riding roller coasters

7. My pet peeve in quality? The "paperwork quality" people... that kind of quality personnel that thinks that Quality is just to try to make the paperwork look good in front of customers and auditors... (any resemblance to real persons or companies is just pure and unintended coincidence :notme: )

8. If you could change the world of quality, what would you do? I would like to see more Quality people living quality lives, spending more quality time with their families instead of staying endless hours trying to get the paperwrok straight for the next audit or customer visit.

So guys, I'm looking forward t learn a lot from your experience in the Quality field... although I have visited this website before and found very valuable information for my work. By the way, thank you to the guys that posted information on Destructive Testing GR&R... that help me a great deal. Thank you all and see you around! :bigwave:

1. Name: Melissa
2. Job Title or explanation of what you do: A little bit of everything, but mostly Customer Service and Purchasing
3. I've been in Industrial Distribution of Fasteners and MRO products for almost 7 years. In September of 2006, I changed companies and began working more closely with MRO. In April 2007, I was reassigned to the exciting world of production fasteners.
4. Wurth Service Supply - Duluth, GA
5. Minimal involvement (reporting and customer resolution) up until April 2007. Now I deal with Quality issues from start to finish (with the exception of the actual testing)
6. I believe in following the rules and gaining a thorough understanding of the reasons behind them.
7. Too much paperwork
8. Right now I don't know that I would. I'm still learning. As I learn I'm sure I will have realistic suggestions within my own company (and perhaps above and beyond) that may change Quality policies and procedures.

Hello, fellow Quality Folks. Let me introduce myself:
My name is Diane Swafford and I am Corporate Quality Coordinator at a not-for-profit ISO 9001 registered organization. I have been in the Quality field for 25+ yrs (an indication of just how old I am!) and have done everything from dimensional and visual inspection of product to implmenting quality systems. I think my favorite quality "task" is performing audits; I love to ask questions re how things are done and see if they match what is documented and obtain "evidence". I have mainly joined this forum in order to get more info re TS16949 as we are going for certification in TS; we are currently ISO. :bigwave:

1. Name - Karen Whitehead

2. Job Title or Explanation of What you Do: My title is Administration & Finance Manager, along with the designation of Quality Mgt Rep. I have a degree in Business (have worked ~ 25 years in accounting and office systems). I am a team player on a very small company (6 employees). My husband began this company several years ago. He has worked for about 39 years as an engineer in manufacturing (mostly for a controls company that supplied thermostats to the Big 3). My husband, my son (also an engineer), and I make up three of the six. We make thermal actuators, products that incorporate the actuators (i.e., valves), and assemble check valves (subcontractor for company that supplies to GM). Most of the products we produce are for customers that do business with the automotive industry. We do have short, medium & long-term goals that hopefully will lead to a much bigger company. We feel having a good quality management system and being ISO certified is important.

3. Industry You're In: Manufacturing - Thermal Actuators

4. Company You Work for & Location: Keystone Manufacturing & Engineering, Inc., Vonore, Tennessee.

5. Length of time in Quality Function: 1 Year (and that developing procedures, forms, etc.). I'm very green at this point. Rely a lot on my husband's experience in quality - and on common sense.

6. Something Personal that Sets You Apart: I am an avid horseback rider. I have a large horse trailer with living quarters. Love to travel and camp with my horse and riding friends. I'm getting ready to travel from Tennessee to Utah (with stops in between) to ride in Texas and Utah (i.e., Bryce and Zion National Parks, Red Canyon) and do lots of sightseeing in places like Monument Valley, Arches National Park, Kodachrome Basin Park, etc.

7. Pet Peeve in Quality - Probably too soon to have a pet peeve. But, I have experienced several situations where (1) there seems to be lots of overkill in some areas and requirements, and (2) it is now clear after a couple of years of inspecting incoming parts that being certified to an ISO standard and supposedly having a quality management system doesn't necessary mean one produces good parts.

8. If you could change the world of quality what would you do: No response.

6. I don't give up! I hate quitting.
7. The bad wrap Quality gets. When ISO or any one of the Buzz words is used / implemented only to serve as a flag or stamp of approval, all which gives quality a bad name. Oh yea 1 more: "Meaningless Tolerances." Why specify a target value that cannot be hit, and will not be rejected for missing?
8. Wow what a question. If I could change the World I would seek to eliminate Gate Keeper Inspection as a Quality Role. Processes should be controlled by operators’ and preventative maintenance, which should be easy if products are designed for manufacturing. Quality should be controlled by everyone. I believe that there are smart ways to run an organization. You can call them what you want: Lean, Six-Sigma, TQM. The problems are never the ideas of these systems, just the way that the people implement and use them. I hope to reorganize the way we use them at our company to be more effective in improving the value of our products.

My name is David DeLong and I have been in the Quality game longer than most people in this forum have been alive. I have been an Inspector, CMM Operator, Quality Engineering, Quality Management and, since 1986, a Consultant in Quality but lately specializing in ONLINE seminars in GD&T and other quality related subjects.

I am certified through ASME as a GD&T Professional- Technologist & Senior, Senior member of ASQ and certified in Quality Engineering.

I love the "game" but it can be frustrating to the newer people in quality. Suggestions from an old guy - do not push too hard forcing the quality attitude on people. You may win a battle or two but you could loose the war. Promote the Quality through a good Quality Costs system. Remember, quality attitude comes from the top and if its not there, good luck!

4. Leggett & Platt Automotive Europe in Nuremberg, Germany.

5. 10yrs as QE, 7 as QAM, 1 as what I am now.

6. Running/Djing at a radio station and playing electric bass in my (hohoho) "free" time - And my beergut, but I want rid of that.

7. Faking it. European engineering managers who tell me (in front of their team I am supposed to be training) they think certification is BS two days before the auditor arrives.

8. Make it unnecessary for there to *be* a world of quality - Its all pretty much common sense, when it comes down to it.

Hello Everyone,

I'm Rick Patterson, and I was hired as the ISO Coordinator at McWane Cast Iron Pipe in Birmingham, Alabama (USA) in April 2007. In the five months since I was hired, I've already been through a surveillance audit in May and a 3-year Recert audit in Sept. We passed the Recertification with no findings, of which I am very proud.

Before McWane, for five years I was the ISO Coordinator and one of the few internal auditors for a very large international calcium carbonates corporation in Sylacauga, Aalabama. At the end of March 2007, I was downsized along with a majority of the most experienced quality managers. Through someone I'd met at an ASQ Meeting, I found a position open at McWane within two weeks!

I've been in Quality since 1997, having worked as a QA Lab Tech before becoming ISO Coordinator.

I am an ASQ Certified Quality Auditor and Certified HACCP Auditor, and completed the 5-day Lead Auditor course from BSI.

What I feel sets me apart is my ability to stay optimistic despite the fact that others tell me that I'll become as "jaded" as they are before long. I also have a talent for seeing things that most people tend to overlook, which helps tremendously in audits.

My Pet Peeve in Quality (ISO) is when people, especially managers, stick to the "old ways" and fight against improvements because they refuse to change.

I also would like to rename 'Quality Management System' because people tend to see ISO as "the Quality Department's job". The QMS actually involves and affects much more than the Quality Department.

Welcome to the Cove, hrman, tell us more about who you are, then you might start here:

How To Use the Forum Software - Basic Instructions (http://elsmar.com/Forums/forumdisplay.php?f=86)

It's the "Basic Instructions" forum, look at some of the threads here. It's as good of a place to look as any. The FAQ's can answer almost any question you might have about how to use the Cove. Someone took time to start it. When you've looked here, jump in and ask a question. Don't worry, most of us are friendly here.

3. Industry you're in - Consulting Service currently. Being a Chemical Engineer, I 've also delved into Chemical Simulation software solutions, the glass processing industry (its fascinating!), and the petrochemical production floor (somehow, i aint the floor guy)

4. Company you work for and location - Global Experience Consulting, Kuwait which provides Feasibility studies, business plans, QHSE consulting, Industrial consulting services to name a few!

5. Length of time in quality function - I wished I was longer in quality, but then I have always been a person with a penchant for quality since my school days, which means I have been practicing quality unconciously for longer than I know of!! Well.... conciously, its been a healthy 4 years of jam-packed quality service.

6. The one thing that puts me apart - Most people say, I dont have an ego which hurts.

7. Your pet peeve in quality - I have many!
1. That there people in the top management who want the quality certificate and still give a DAMN about quality issues.
2. That I wished the quality awareness ever increased in the Middle East. (I'm INDIAN, I'm working in the Middle East!)

8. What would you do to change the world of quality - Change the mindset of the "dequalitized" top management. Clause 5.1 talks about management commitment, and an organization CANNOT successfully implement a good quality system if there is no clear intention to do so from the Top management!

3) Industry: Medical Device
4) Experience: About 3 yrs in Quality, but approx. 9 yrs in the pharmaceutical/medical device industry. This includes laboratory, aseptic and non-aseptic manufacturing, and quality related experiences. I have many scars from Ops :D
5) Pet peeve in quality: Organizations that feel Quality is responsible for fixing mistakes (small and large), which includes a lot of technical writing. Provides great experiences, but I feel the organization would have a much stronger team if they looked for, and had the same expectations, as others in management.
6) Changing the world: More cross-functional training/experience of Ops and QA management. ie - walking in each other's shoes.

You may be green [new], but you are not green [conservation-minded] enough. Most of the rest of us have an entire panoply of uses for those AOL cds (also the ones that don't take a "burn" when trying to rip something cool off the internet.)
Some of MY uses:
drink coasters
signal mirrors (sight through the center hole)
garden protectors (hang on strings stretched across the garden - the flashing reflections startle deer and birds alike. I think the raccoons use them as a grooming aid, though!)
replacement "pigeons" for trap shooting
child size Frisbees to use in Frisbee Golf
carpet skates - glue them to the bottom of shower clogs
large wheels for homemade toys
juggling props

I would also suggest using them as props in fake UFO videos, but it has probably already been done.

Regards -JohnThat only works for those "soft crust" microwave pizzas. For the home made crisp crust (say that three times fast!:tg:), I use a big machete - it doesn't drag the cheese and sauce into a heap on the cutting board!

You can use the cds on the candles as wax drip shields when you have that intimate dinner of good wine and pizza.

:DHi All, I've been a part of this forum since around 1999 (I guess that makes me an old timer here - wow! That makes me feel old, using the term "old timer" regarding an internet context).

1. My name is Jerry Eldred
2. I'm a Metrology Engineer by trade, having learned through the school of hard knocks. I got my engineer title through Motorola back in the 90s.
3. I've been in what feels like all of them. I am currently involved in the biomedical industry (medical electronic hardware R&D and manufacturing). I previously came out of the semiconductor industry, and have worked in the US Navy, test equipment rental company, aerospace/defense, another semiconductor company, HF radio/communications, third party calibration consulting work.
4. I work for a contract calibration company, hired to operate the calibration program in a major international conglomerate's factory site in northeastern Massachusetts (just moved up from Texas)
5. I've been in the business since 1978.
6. My religious values. I travel regularly to mission areas of the world, including Haiti, Guatemala, and south Asia.
7. Pressure to compromise.
8. I may not be too popular for this one, but I would like to see all the in-house calibration labs come back (which have been greatly replaced by third party contractors - as the pressure to compromise quality would be removed). I would like to eliminate all the "lick-m-stick-m" labs that have driven the pricing structure so far down that GOOD calibration is in some places in danger of extinction.:)

Welcome aboard, Ilya. I too find that 'quality is not cheap' as you indicated in your pet peeve. In fact, I am often told that 'quality costs money'. Isn't it a bit of irony that people feel so, while some quality proponents have clearly indicated that 'quality saves money'?

Hi, this is John Engelen, Quality Manager in transport and logistics services company DSV.
I’m located in Venray, The Netherlands, where we run the European distribution center of Xerox.

Working in the company since 1990 I made my steps through operations and jumped to Quality in 1998 starting as a Quality Engineer before I took over the Quality Manager’s responsibilities three years later.

I believe that “all I really need to know I learned in kindergarten”. Everything else I can find on the internet. As a matter of fact I always follow logical thinking and common sense to achieve goals.
My pet peeve is to see how somebody tends to avoid responsibilities.

Quality can merely be found in the purpose we pursue. Our task is to help people find directions.

Welcome folks.

If you are hesitant on starting the first post, it makes sense to have a look at the FAQ section (http://elsmar.com/Forums/faq.php?) or How To Use the Forum Software - Basic Instructions. (http://elsmar.com/Forums/forumdisplay.php?f=86)

Thanks for taking the first step and we look forward for your active participation.

Good to hear from you.

By the way which country are you based? Personally I think this forum will not help you a lot in drafting of procedures blah blah in relation to implementation of ISO 9001:2000 or any other ISO system. What you really need now is training on systems. An awareness session followed by other trainings in procedure writing, conducting audits etc etc. Please discuss with the management of your company so that such trainings may be organised for you. Hope that partly answers your querries.

Best Regards
John Okelo:rolleyes:

John Okelo:rolleyes:I somewhat disagree. We can help. Judy may be able to find some procedures in the file attachments (http://elsmar.com/Forums/fileslist.php)that she can use as an example and adapt to her organization's processes. Notice, I'm not suggesting she copy them, but that she take her processes and describe them in a similar manner.

Welcome Alan.

1 You stated that you work in Taiwantion - is that the new name of Taiwan coined by President Chen ShuiBien?
2. When you fired your boss, you need to look for another. A better and more positive solution is to take over his position (that's what I did).

Do jump in since you had already taken the first step.

Am pleased by the response by our Forum members!
I have started cutting out grains(results) from the day I registered this forum.

Time and again QA guys end up in tough times with Management due to rejections in the shop floor, we are too often isolated and asked what are we doing? (We ourselves ask this sometimes in our life)

Iam sure this forum help to give some ways and means of thinking to Solve the daily issues.

Thanks to all
