Hi Davis, I completely agree with your comment about top management. I have the same situation here. I would like to ask your opinion on Preventive actions, or rather how do you show compliance to that requirement if you have a lack of management commitment

Hi Davis, I completely agree with your comment about top management. I have the same situation here. I would like to ask your opinion on Preventive actions, or rather how do you show compliance to that requirement if you have a lack of management commitmentI'd like to remind folks this thread is primarily for INTRODUCTIONS and WELCOMES. If you have a specific question of an individual, may I suggest using the Cove software to send him/her a private message? (Click on the person's name at the top of the post, select send private message from the dialog box and follow directions from there)

If the content of the person's introduction raises a question in your mind that you'd like answered, consider starting a new thread with that question in the appropriate Forum. Be sure to use an appropriate title for the thread you start (please avoid one word pleas such as "Help!") That way, your question will get some exposure and not get buried among the 2,000+ other posts in this thread.

On topic: Welcome to all the newbies who have joined recently. I congratulate you on your preferment!:bigwave:

Thanks to all the regulars who have extended welcomes to the newbies. It helps establish and confirm we are a community of friendly helpful folk, eager to share our knowledge and passion for Quality with others.

Job Title: Systems Manager
Industry: Currently, pyrotechnics but is subject to change with little or no notice. My background is in the Quality field in the aerospace industry for over 18 years. I have a PhD from The School of Hard Knocks.
Company: Mid-sized pyrotechnic (no, not fireworks) facility in Middle Georgia
Length of time in quality function: 20+ years
Something personal that sets me apart: I am a straight talker and give honest, unbiased opinions regardless of wheather you want to hear it or not. I always tell my bosses that if they aren't willing to hear the answer then don't ask the question. Office politics is something for others to practice and is an enormus waste of time and energy that could be spent on fixing problems. If other people would check their ego at the door every morning we might be able to actually accomplish something.
Pet peeve in Quality: Hearing the old saying "we've always done it that way" will get my blood boiling quicker than anything.
If I could change one thing about the world of Quality: That would be to stop running after the latest and greatest craze of the moment, get back to basics and start using a little common sense.

Hi TennQTA,

Appreciate your curiosity on the top management, which was a major issue in the Quality Implementation process.
I was in charge of introducing an Achieving Competitive Excellence(ACE) operating system, a continuous quality Improvement program, in my company.
To bring about top management involvement, we are trying to include Quality Improvement and implementation of ACE as part of the performance measurement and balanced score card of the management.
If implemented properly and religiously could help bring the management on-board.

Thx & Regards,

Davis

Elaine, I agree about Quality being called the "Police." Not the best image.
Another thing, Quality is often referred to as the "safety net" to catch what other departs let go which builds a lack of caring for their own responsibility.
Quality is part of the team! not an outside player.

4. FCI Automotive - Novi, MI USA

5. Quality experience: Six years of staying ahead of our quality department's aptitude curve. That is to say, I'm not in the Quality department, but it seems to be more important to me than to them (unfortunately).

6. My professional credo: A strong commitment to promoting standards and procedures that work. My matra: Less Repeat Mistakes, More Efficiency, Less Bureaucracy!

7. My quality peeves: A general disregard for following GD&T and "interpreting" when something is not clear. Not enough importance placed upon confidence of reported statistics.

8. How would I change the world of Quality?: I would require everyone to take a comprehensive course in critical thinking.

Hi,
I am a Australian pathologist living in Los Angeles. I am involved in research in energy based medical therapies; as opposed to pharmaceuticals. I use the term Progressive Medicine for this endeavor and work within an Institute of Progressive Medicine. The major theme is to help with the development and validation of energy based medicine in this country and to then make the results known to countries in which the Governments provide health care. The institute is a non-profit public charity and is dependent upon and appreciative of the help it receives.
Specifically, I am seeking help from an ISO 13485: 2003 certified medical device manufacturer with CMDCAS approval. Health Canada has classified an approach to treating herpes virus infections as comprising a combination of two Class II medical devices. I had identifed an ISO 13485: 2003 certified "manufacturer" to repackage the components but now realize the certificate did not cover Canada. I would appreciate any introductions to possible companies, preferably in Los Angeles, that could act as the manufacturer and medical device licensee.
I can be reached through this forum or directly at 626-616-2868. Thanks, W. John Martin, MD, PhD.

Hello All,

Name: Rom Altstock
Job Title: VP Operation – (functioning also as QA manager)
Industry: Biotech- In vitro diagnostics
Company: Syntezza Molecular Detection - a biotech start up located in Israel

A newbie as a 'QA manager' previously functioned as a R&D/lab manager in other biotech and health care facilities.

Up till now I have always found my work to be both demanding and challenging, which for me, makes my job pleasing and gratifying. I can only hope this position will offer the same satisfaction because I come to work and not to a job.

I think my pet peeve in quality would be the lack of understanding what quality is (in truth I think I am still trying to figure it out my self)

If you could change the world of quality, what would you do? To this I would have to answer (due to recent experiences) that I would change the jargon of quality to a more earthly and understandable language.

see you on the boards

Amen to that!
Every larger customer we have has their own jargon and I get tired of asking... "and what does '(insert jargon here)' mean to your organization? I know of three other organizations where that term is used it three different ways"

Hi all!
I'm Emel. I'm a quality assurance manager of a catering company in Moscow, Russia. I've been in quality function for 3 years, but I'm only 2 weeks old in iso22000 (food safety management)
My working conditions set me apart, cause the consultants, trainers..etc are mono-langual(!) russians. The support I get, if any, is through an office assistant/translator, who naturally has zero command on quality management terminology. I'm sure you all get the picture.
Nice to be among you. Thanx for welcoming me :-))

Welcome to all the newbies!:bigwave:
Soon, I hope to see YOU become "answer gurus" for the next crop of newbies.
Above all, we are a "community" of friends, eager to help each other over those inevitable rough spots in our careers.

Sometimes, the best appreciated help is not from a so-called "expert," but from someone who has already been through and survived a similar rough spot. Often the empathy is more appreciated than the actual advice.

8. If you could change the world of quality, what would you do?

Fire everyone (except myself :D) and hire Brazilians. They are very nice people and seem to fully embrace quality management. They make it look too easy. One of the facilities I visited didn't just use 5-S principles, they actually had palm trees growing inside a steel mill!

My name is Andy I'm from scenic southern NJ.
I work for a metal fabrication and assembly company.
We are just getting started on the ISO process.
I get to head up the QC department. One more thing to pad out my resume.
Although I have agreed to the terms on this site - I would like to object about the "no foul Language" clause. This will force me to edit pretty much every other (bunch of backspaces) word I type.

The variety of industries and the global spread is truly amazing. This is a long way from the early roots of the Cove when folks were scurrying to meet primarily automotive demands for QS9000.

We're looking forward to the day when you, too, will be "old hands" and welcoming other newcomers.

Hello, forum...

I've just joined and would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself.

I'm Paul Sluder, from Orange City, Florida (bedroom cmmty east of Orlando near Daytona). I live in Jacksonville and commute every day. I work for Creative Catalog Concepts as their Director of Production. We're like a desktop publishing company/ad agency producing mutli-channel marketing for clients and manufacturers in the Educational, Toy and Art Supply industries. Our largest billing products are catalogs and Web sites.

I've been with the company since October, 07, having come from a publicly-traded MRO reseller which also produced catalogs. I've been a Print Production Guru and Print Buyer for most of my 30+ years in the business.

I've joined to get valuable insight into systems and procedures as I will be writing new ones for this company as we move into a new era.

Thanks in advance, and i'm looking forward to all of your valuable info.

Do we have to pay for the constitution of our country to know what laws to abide by? so why pay for standards? We (quality comunity) end up helping to write them anyway !

I'm sick of changing things every year because we get some new guy that gets his panties in a wad over some archaic fact in the latest standard that makes no difference in our procedures whatsoever.

I'm looking forward to a having a good place to exchange ideas and perhaps get a few new ones!
