I have really gotten a lot out of this forum and all of you who participate. I was curious, though, who all of you are and what you do. How about letting us know a little bit about you and your background?
1. Name
2. Job Title or explanation of what you do
3. Industry you're in or have been in
4. Company you work for and location
5. Length of time in quality function
6. Something personal that sets you apart
7. Your pet peeve in quality (pet peeve is a minor annoyance that can instill a great level of frustration)
8. If you could change the world of quality, what would you do?

I'll go first!

1. My name is Eric Frischmuth
2. Quality Engineer focused on quality system development.
3. Medical Device Industry
4. ETHICON Endo-Surgery, a Johnson and Johnson Company. Located in Cincinnati, OH
5. 13 years in quality and 8 in Operations. 7 years in the military before that.
6. Play guitar and raise water lilies! Got the "Greenraisin" tag in college when a friend started calling me that. I asked him why and he said, "Just how normal is a green raisin?" The rest is history!
7. My pet peeve is the lip service given to quality
8. If I could change the world of quality, I would REQUIRE rotation from operations and other functions through the quality organization or function. The best ops folks are the ones who've been through QS, QA, or QC, and the best QA folks have the scar tissue from ops!

My degree is in Business Administration.

I’ll take a shot. Some questions will be left unanswered. Some information is in the “profile” part of the forum when there is a post. That is for those who wish to provide a profile. I don’t imagine there will be a large response due to “privacy” issues. I could be wrong. Here goes:
1. Profile
2. Quality Assurance & Environmental Compliance Manager
3. Aircraft (Most Systems), Submarine Life Support Equipment, Water Treatment-Purification Systems
4. Profile
5. 35 years, yea..a long time
6. Started as an inspector in the Jurassic Period and received ever increasing responsibilities in the quality arena. Probably not so strange.
7. No support from Management in Quality initiatives unless an external audit was on the horizon
8. “Everyone” would be made accountable for their functions and their effect on the Quality System

Kevin Mader
18th April 2001, 06:31 PM
1. Yes, that is my real name. Although it is Irish, I am a mix of Russian, German, and Polish but no Irish blood in my system (unless Irish beer qualifies for blood?)

2. Quality Manager for Thule in CT and I oversee the QMS in both our US manufacturing facilities (Ill). I have done some consulting work, but mostly just for friends and their referrals.

3. Roof Racks and Accessories for Automobiles. I worked in the Medical Device world too, once upon a time at US Surgical Corporation.

4. Noted above.

5. 12 years as: Senior Technician, Quality Engineer, Quality Manager.

6. Not really sure that I am much different than anyone else. Nothing distinctive that I know of.

7. Senior Management’s separation of the Quality & Business Systems and lack of Quality Concepts.

8. I would help folks to discover and learn Dr. Deming’s SoPK.

8. If you could change the world of quality, what would you do?

Attack Over. Get rid of the term quality system and replace it with a term like management system, or manufacturing system, or business system.

Influence schools to teach courses in cause and effect, prevention vs detection, root cause analysis etc.... They all affect how we live our everyday lives and are not limited to the umbrella of quality systems.

OK, I'll give out some info that set me really apart from you wimpy types.

1. Randy Daily

2. I am an ESH Professional working in a safety office on a US Army installation as a contractor.

3. The industry I started in would now be called nation building...I served as an infantryman in the Marines. I then went into the Army Reserve as a member of Special Forces (yep I wore a green beenie)and retired from the National Guard with about 28.5 years service. I am a former police officer from Arkansas spent 11.5 years with Lockheed as an aircraft mechanic (licensed A&P). I worked for ITT Industries in Environmental Safety where I got introduced with ISO 9000 and jumped on the 14000 bandwagon and got myself RAB certified as a Lead Auditor (not easy).

4. I now work for Charis Corporation as a Safety Specialist in the Ft.Irwin safety office (I hate it..the job not the company).

5. I started in Quality in 1990 with Lockheed as an Inspector.

6. My bullet and knife wounds which mean I don't scare real easy or get intimidated either.

7. How people tend to fake it and claim a good job.

8. Hold folks more accountable with a 34" Louisville Slugger

CarolX
19th April 2001, 11:38 AM
OK - I'll nibble a little -

1. Name - Carol X. (yes, my last name starts with an x)
2. Job Title - Quality Assurance Manager
3. Industry - Currently: Sheet Metal Fabrication
4. Job Shop north of Chicago
5. Length of time in quality function - OUCH - 23 years
6. Something personal that sets you apart - hardest working mom - I have 5 kids - ages 6 months to 18 years
7. Your pet peeve in quality - lip service and fads
8. If you could change the world of quality, what would you do? - eliminate it - companies are going to make good or bad product iregardless of what we do - I say let them sink or swim on their own (I know, that would put me out of a job)

freeda
19th April 2001, 12:01 PM
I'll give this a shot.

Name:
Freeda Hoeweler (very German)

Job Title or explanation of what you do:
My job title is Quality Engineering Technician, which is not representive of what I do. I pretty much maintain our QS registration. I am pretty much your average pee-on.

Industry your in or have been in:

We make metal and plastic components for a variety of different companies. Both automotive and non-automotive.

Company you work for & location:
I work for a machine shop in Southern Indiana (across the river from Louisville, KY). We occupy the old Louisville Slugger factory. Yes, until 5 years ago Louisville Slugger bats were made in Indiana.

Length of time in quality function: Unlike most you, I have pretty much started in the quality game. I have been in it for only 6 years.

Something personal that sets you apart: Not too much except, I am very tall and have a lot of red hair.

Your pet peeve in quality: My pet peeve is that upper management thinks that quality is the responsibility of the quality department. When they don't hold the mfg. department accountable for the quality of the parts they run.

If you could change the world of quality, what would you do: I'll have to get back with you on that one.

Dan De Yarman
19th April 2001, 12:05 PM
Don't believe I'll be able to top Randy, but here it goes.

1. Name: Daniel Edward De Yarman (French, well De Yarman is anyway)

2. Job title: Quality Assurance Coordinator - All the responsibility and none of the authority of the Management Representative.

3. Industry: Custom Automated Industrial Machinery

4. Company and location: Acro Automation Systems, Inc. (QS-9000 TE registered) - Glendale (suburb of Milwaukee), WI

5. Time in quality: grueling, almost two years

6. What sets me apart (condensed version): I am a Christian, which helps me to realize there are more important things in life than "quality assurance". I am quite young, only 25(as of last week), and have no college degree. I was offered this position after a registrar and consultant had been picked and it was my job to make sure we got registered. We did so in a little over a year. I pretty much learned as I went along. Took a few good courses along the way, though.

7. Pet peeve: Lack of management support or management turning a deaf ear to what is really going on (penny wise, dollar stupid).

8. What I would change: Put everybody in someone else's shoes for one week so they can see how there actions or lack there of make a difference, not just in terms of quality, but of the bottom line.

I also appreciate this website, I've learned a lot from all of you here. And I will continue to contribute my knowledge and adivce for as long as I am in the quality arena.

Above....Rochester, NY

5. Length of time in quality function

Most of above career; with stints in manufacturing

6. Something personal that sets you apart

Well, CarolX has me beat on the kids(I have 3 8-14); so I'll have to go with the fact that I still actively play softball and soccer - which, if you do the math, my mother thinks I'm too old for. I've also recently been amazed that altho there are alot of women in quality at the larger companies - in the smaller companies I'm dealing with, I'm still "unique."

7. Your pet peeve in quality

Fancy names for the same thing- and manager that "latch" on and think its a matter of more training.

8. If you could change the world of quality, what would you do?

I gotta go with having understand variation and Deming System of Profound knowledge. Quality shouldn't be a "field" of study, it should be integrated or at least more respected by the other fields.

I think that we may have a very good subject thread to pursue regarding the integration of quality function (Management, auditing)and the theories of statistics relating to Demings work and SPC, sigma. I'm not qualified to start the thread but, I think it would be a great education for all quality practitioners at the cove.

Steven Truchon
25th April 2001, 12:37 PM
I found all of the posts so interesting I have to throw my 7 cents in here too.

1. Name:
Steve Truchon

2. Job Title or explanation of what you do:
Quality Engineer which is kind of inaccurate but thats the title they gave me. I am responsible for the ISO/QS system here, also I am the Safety Director and recently was awarded the "privelidge" of being the official environmental coordinator, so I guess I'll coordinate the environment now too?

3. Industry you're in or have been in:
Currently in the fineblanking industry. For those who do not know, its basically precision metal stamping (yes, its possible, and its not an oxymoron). Previous to that I have been in precision machining, culinary arts, marine biologist, and Naval SpecWar Operator (Hooyah Randy)

4. Company you work for and location:
Precision Resource - Florida Division Fort Lauderdale near the beach

5. Length of time in quality function:
hmmmm 2001 minus 1980 equals WAY TOO LONG!

6. Something personal that sets you apart:
Im a musician trapped in an engineers body.

7. Your pet peeve in quality:
"We've been doin it this way for 20 years and now you say..." - Not many things will cause my gut to "grrrrrr" more that this.

8. If you could change the world of quality, what would you do?
Teach "quality" as a life concept in the public school system. Duct Tape the mind of the stereotype Production Manager. Go back in time and re-route myself to the Keys as a shrimp fisherman.

5. Length of time in Quality: 4.5 years
6. Something personal that sets me apart: Breeding & showing Oriental Shorthair cats
7. Pet Peeve(s): I've got 2... "That's the way we've always done it" from anyone on the shop floor or in management, and upper management wanting all the bennies of a "quality program" but not wanting to put forth serious effort to make the program really work.
8. If I could change the world.... Hmmmmmm... make Quality Management (theories, philosophies and tools) a requirement for everyone at the level of front line supervisor and above.

5. 23 years in quality function, 6 of which are at my present location
6. I am on a Board of Directors for a drum and bugle corps (youth development group)here in Michigan.
7. I am cheating (I have a couple): 1) The next big thing (flavor of the month) and 2) Lip service versus reality.
8. Get rid of all the next big things already in place and fill the void with common sense and a true understanding of the quality function to the bottom line.

Rick Goodson
26th April 2001, 12:52 PM
Great idea! It makes it a little more interesting when you are conversing with people and know a little bit about who they are.

1) Rick Goodson

2) Dual job titles: Quality Services Director & Master Trainer. I'm the resident quality 'gear head' at the organization and also responsible for developing, designing, and teaching training programs in quality, operations, manufacturing. I also consult (we call it direct help) for our members (explanation in 4) below).

3)Worked in manufacturing (electronics, electro-mechanical, mechanical) in goverment, industrial, and automotive industries. A couple of Fortune 100's and a bunch of smaller companies. Now in training and consulting.

4) Work for MRA - The Management Asociation, located in the Milwaukee area of Wisconsin. We are a management association with approximately 2,200 member companies. MRA provides advise, training, and direct help in most organizational areas (emphasis on Human Resources) except accounting and IT.

5) 22 years in quality and a few (9 years) in purchasing, engineering, and operations management.

6) Vegetarian, organic gardener, grow most of what I eat. (Yea, I have heard them all...Do vegetarians eat animal crackers?, etc.)

7) Pet Peeve: ISO implementations to get the registration only and then complain nothing got better and it costs alot.

8) Chaning the world of Quality: Got to agree with AL and CarolX, integrate Q into everything and eliminate the Q function.

We have 6 american paint/pinto horses all but 2 raised here "on the ranch"(if you can call 8 acres a ranch).
(Why 6? we need them for the 5 grandkids and they keep the weeds down)

7. Your pet peeve in quality
Inability of many managers to understand the results of focused effort, and their role in the QMS.

8. If you could change the world of quality, what would you do?
Gather all the "flavor of the day" programs together & give each a clear identification.
All too often a "New idea" is developed that just is an extension of Demming & Juran theories.

Add another one into the mix!

1. Name -- Graeme C. Payne (the origin and spelling is totally English.)

2. Job Title or explanation of what you do -- Metrology Engineer, or Quality Engineer if the first draws a blank stare. I am back to writing calibration procedures and implementing "better" measurement methods for an electronic calibration lab. (We have had the ISO 9001 audit and are recommended for registration, so some of the pressure is off.)

3. Industry you're in or have been in -- I am currently working with the electronic calibration lab of a major airline. Previous work was doing the same for the Navy (civil service) and a brief year as a technical writer and ISO guru for a software company. My specialization is the care and feeding (aka calibration) of electronic test and measuring instruments. Although one position with the Navy was in Environmental Effects Testing, where I got to bash things to bits, freeze and boil them, shake them to powder, fog them with salt mist and take them to very high simulated altitudes. Great fun!

4. Company you work for and location -- I am a contractor working at a major airline in Atlanta, GA (as they say on a popular game show ...)

5. Length of time in quality function -- 20 years plus ...

6. Something personal that sets you apart -- how many other "left-handed red-haired eyeglass-wearing cat-loving English immigrant former Marines" do you know?

7. Your pet peeve in quality -- Total Quality Lip Service.

8. If you could change the world of quality, what would you do? -- Restructure business education (undergraduate and graduate) so that most textbooks are by (or based on the work of) Deming, Juran, Shewhart, Feigenbaum, Covey, Crosby, Peters and a few others - and make them required study for supervisors promoted from within.

(My secondary goal is to win the lottery and retire. http://16949.com/ubb/biggrin.gif But alas! I know too much about statistics and probability to make that work!)

Networks work - so the concept of having a trust community to turn to is encouraging.

1) Name: Christina Forakis, BS in Organization Behavior; MS in Organization Development; OJT in Business Mgmt (20+ years)
2) Job Title/What you do: Organization Development Practitioner; Leadership & Team Development; Strategic Planning; Relationship and Role Mgmt; Conflict Resolution; Facilitation;
3) Industry: Private Consultant; State government civil servant
4) Company/Where: Sacramento, California
5) Length of time in quality function: 30+ years; there is no job that is not involved in some aspect of a "quality function, although my years in sales, working with customers, and working for the state have certainly honed my acumen in 'quality'.
6) What Sets you apart: Approach. I approach everything from the perspective that everyone is in the same boat; right, that doesn't always turn out to be true, but it's where I always start. What has created sustaining long-term relationships of trust has been my approach to everyone I work with or encounter. Soft, genuine, clear, and open.
7) Your pet peeve: Lip service
8) If you could change one thing: Lip service

Sure have enjoyed reading the posts so far. So here are my answers.

1. Name:
James Huening (pronounced Heening)(verrry german)

2. Job Title or explanation of what you do: Quality Manager, QS-9000 ccordinator (guru in training) Lead inspector, Calibration, etc...etc...etc.. (I am 50 percent of the Quality department)

3. Industry you're in or have been in:
Oh Lordy lets see...30 years in manufacturing, of which about 15 have been in the quality field.

4. Company you work for and location: Small (about 90 souls), general machining company in Cincinnati Ohio.

5. Length of time in quality function:
See above. Started out as a line inspector for a hydraulic cylinder mfg. Moved to final testing (try to blow them up. Fun but messy when you succeed), then to management before moving to my current position.

6. Something personal that sets you apart: Mmmmm... Well how many 46 year olds can say they have flown a B-17 Flying Fortress. (did it twice.) Also was the first child born in Cinci area 1/1/55.

7. Your pet peeve in quality:
Same as others. Non-accountability. Idea that quality is for the quality department. Lip service from upper management.

8. If you could change the world of quality, what would you do?:
Can't really add too much to what others are saying. Seems that the only functions that "Quality" should be performing are training, calibration, and auditing. Everything else should be handled by other functions. Were talking about business practices here.

Sure have been pleased with the quality of the people populating this board, and am happy to be a part of it. Thanks to everyone.

Heeeeeeeeeyyyy!!!!!!!

My info has changed somewhat.

I am now the Owner, Operator, CEO, Head Consultant and all around Chief Bottle Washer for "Daily Safety & Environmental Services". The wife is the Chief Financial Officer (she gets the money) and Office Manager (she straightens up my mess).

I landed the ISO 14000 implementation project for a major (Billion $+) space and electronics company here in So Cal. Talk about high tech...I've trained rocket scientists (some of these guys worked on the Gemini/Appolo programs as well as the shuttle and everything else that's happening).

Judi (my CFO and wife) and I now have 8 grandkids.

I've got contracts with a couple of Registrars as a Lead Auditor for 14000.

That's it.

Name:
Proprietary Information (just like Tier 1 DFMEA’s)

Job Title or explanation of what you do:
Title- Quality Systems Manager.
What do I do ?- Create an aura of happiness for those willing few wishing to improve. Or, horror for old school schmucks that enjoy beating themselves into submission everyday, because they’ve always done it that way (it’s a love or hate kinda thing).

Industry you're in or have been in:
Still metals- Most gigs have been Tier 1 & 2 automotive stampings and assemblies, and some nasty foundry stuff. I have metal in my blood, and it's not all just from years of beer drinking.

Company you work for and location:
No comment--just ridin' a low-tech gig til end of summer.
Location: Beautiful Finger Lakes, NY. Glass of Red, anyone ? :ko:

Length of time in quality function:
84-dog years- was wearin’ Milk Bone underwear for the first 3.

Something personal that sets you apart: (sorry, I have a few)
1. I use a lot of logic, common sense and data for decision-making.
2. I expect zero defects, all the time, every time, period. Absolutely, no excuses. If you don’t strive for and implement mechanisms for zero defects, you’d better pray it’s not your 7-year-old daughter in front of the lone air bag that fails to deploy.
3. I always have a good day. Next time you think you're having a bad day, spend the lunch hour strolling through your local hospitals burn unit. Pathetic Management Commitment isn’t so bad after all, is it ?

Your pet peeve in quality:
Acronyms & Certifications. 99.67 % of the geeks (and you know who you are) :bigwave: with multiple acronyms are incapable of creating an effective QMS, or anything of value for that matter. Number of acronyms is indirectly proportional to ones ability.

If you could change the world of quality, what would you do?:
1. Abolish registration completely.
2. Tie Quality performance to everyone’s paycheck.
3. Cut the Bull and get back to fundamental Quality. :thedeal:

7. Your pet peeve in quality
Everyone not in quality :vfunny: Actually I would say lack of support and understanding, and having to explain what I do to everyone

8. If you could change the world of quality, what would you do?
Make it easier for everyone else to understand and accept :p

1. Name
Cari Jo Spears

2. Job Title or explanation of what you do
Quality Assurance Manager, Mgt. Rep., Purchasing Agent (yes, all 3 at my current job)

3. Industry you're in or have been in
Currently - Sept 5 is three year anniversary - Machine Tools / Details.
We make and repair ballscrews, acme screws, spindles, worms, quick change tooling, etc. We also provide miscellaneous turning, milling, ID/OD/Surface grinding and thread grinding.
Prior to this place, my background is metal stamping, with the exception of a 2 year stint at a screw machine shop as an inspector/chucker operator/bench hand.
I started out on the floor running presses and spot welders, became a floor inspector, then chief inspector. I have been a CMM Operator/Programmer, though it has been so long ago I used to use PCDMS in DOS.
The six years prior to my current employment were automotive sheetmetal prototype.

4. Company you work for and location
Thread-Craft, Inc. in Sterling Heights, MI.

5. Length of time in quality function
13 years.

6. Something personal that sets you apart
In true Gemini form I have been a licensed cosmetologist, the Vesco Girl at various car dealerships, I ran the blueprint machine at Stellar Engineering (yes, the old ammonia room), a soldier and carpenter/mason in the Army Reserves, and a shop rat that worked my a$$ off to make a better living. In various shops I have trained floor personnel in basic blueprint reading and GD&T, and basic SPC techniques back in my production environment days. I am a 4.0 student at MCC - still no degree yet - I can only get one or two nights out of the house, so that means only one or two classes a semester. I have been married for 10 years and we have two children. Our daughter, Jeri Lynn (age 11) is our sassy, fearless daredevil - renowned to all who know her as the only girl that will grind down the big slide; and our son, Tyler (age 6) is our future motorhead (Dad is a mechanic and Tyler "helps").

7. Your pet peeve in quality
I cringe everytime a coworker introduces me to a customer or outside party as the one who "does the ISO".

8. If you could change the world of quality, what would you do?
Change every occurance of the word "Quality" in ISO9000 to "Business"

Haven't had a chance to read the entire thread yet but here goes anyways...

1. Name
Robert Modrow

2. Job Title or explanation of what you do
Quality Assurance Manager: Only "quality department" person, manage all quality "programs" and issues, Incoming Material Inspections, In-House Calibrations, Management Rep, basically I'm responsible for overall "quality" since I'm the only one in the department.
Product Engineer: Old title but I'm still responsible for the work - Database maintainance for part info, routings, BOM creation, etc.; Create AutoCAD drawings as needed, "assist" customers with new or modified designs (rarely), review and manage "engineering" part of quoting process, etc...
Computer Person: Not quite a title or a full time job, but I'm the most computer literate person here, so I get to do the basic to the complex tasks (when I can). Basically its "Bob can you fix this?" - Do you remember the "computer guy" skit from Saturday Night Live? I'm that guy without the attitude and not quite as much knowlege...

3. Industry you're in or have been in
Currently Small metal stamping and spot welding company (~25 people at the moment), that supplies the trucking industry (mainly parts for semi trailer brake systems) and HVAC and water heater vent systems for the Mobile home industry. [We're looking for more product lines - send your business our way! :bigwave:]
I've been a bag boy and stocker at a grocery store (5years), a college student (B.S. Mechanical Engineering), a temp worker, and an employee where I'm currently at. (I guess I'm a young kid around here)

4. Company you work for and location
Van Dyke Industries - University Park, IL

5. Length of time in quality function
1 year and 1 month
I started as a temp, then got hired as an assembler/press operator, then I became the preventative maintanance technician (machines, electrical work, and general building maintanence), then I was became the company's Product Engineer and CAD person, then we down sized and I stayed on as an assembler/press operator (same pay), then I was asked to become the Quality Manager when ours decided to move on... So I know a good amount about many part of the company and how to run many of the jobs... I've been here 7 years + 3months as a temp in September...

6. Something personal that sets you apart
What is this a job interview? I'm dedicated to my company regardless which one it is... Other than that I don't know. I'm boring. I need some hobbies besides watching DVDs...

7. Your pet peeve in quality
Since I'm still new to "quality", my pet peeve is CARs for poor delivery performance, especially when the customers typically don't provide us with the lead times we need, and/or constantly change their MRPs and/or due dates... Other than that, its rather lonely being the only "quality person" especially when you are expected to do all the "quality" tasks and projects typically ALONE.

8. If you could change the world of quality, what would you do?
Make the registration process easier and make the standards and misc. publications free or VERY cheap. *shrug* I'm still new here...

4. Company you work for and location
Troy Design and Manufacturing (Subsidiary of Ford)

5. Length of time in quality function
About 17 years

6. Something personal that sets you apart
I can blow up almost anything (not like Tim Taylor), I have a degree in Clinical Psychology, a Degree in Quality Engineering, and am working on my MBA

7. Your pet peeve in quality
Near sightedness - people who can't or won't look past their noses to get a vision of the "big" picture. Lack of systems thinking.

Crow, Smow, Craig. Get over yourself & don't take it so personal. You must be in the .33% that truly is an effective agent. I've seen your posts and I am on your side. In my travels, however, especially in automotive, this has not been the case. I am a huge proponent of expanding knowledge. However, effective systems are built outside of a 4 hour exam on Saturday morning. When "colleagues" adorn themselves with acronyms, yet are incapable of determining the root cause of a basic sympton, whats the point ? When they spout off Cpk and Sigma yet couldn't instruct another on what it is, how to calculate it or how to use it, tis a waste. Acronyms in a lot of cases carry the same weight as the holy registration banner flying out front. I prefer results, and if results are gained whilst one totes certification along, great. But, in my 12 years that is the exception. (and, so I can remain somewhat effective, I'll no longer pursue the dreaded MBA....... and you, please stop at 2 ! :vfunny: ) Have a day ! :bigwave:

Ok, nobox, we can at least agree that letters after a name in themselves don't mean much, except that an effort was made, right? And I, too, agree that results speak much louder than letters. As far as stopping at 2, well, there's this six sigma thing I am getting interested in, and being away from major cities its likely that the only way I'll learn it effectively is to use the Body of Knowledge for the ASQ Black Belt cert as a study guide, at least for starters.

Maybe I did take it too personally. Hey, I had yesterday off, so for me, effectively, this is Monday morning. Yech!!

When they spout off Cpk and Sigma yet couldn't instruct another on what it is,

The best example I've seen of this was a Quality Director that didn't understand the purpose of a gage R&R. He had been in QA/QC for 10 years and didn't know what the % meant!

When "colleagues" adorn themselves with acronyms, yet are incapable of determining the root cause of a basic sympton, whats the point ?

I agree Nobox, I believe I've been able to apply my education as a benefit to my work. I'll let others be the final judge on the success, but it was only by my time on the shop floor that made my education practical.

On a personal note, the challenge of expanding my knowledge is something I embrace. I enjoy it. IMO if I can't use it for a benefit then it is a big pile of wasted money.

#6 - Thought of something good.
I met my wife online using my college's BBS (Shadow BBS at I.I.T.) which pre-dates instant messaging but had a similar feature. She actually attended another college within 1/2 hour of my parents' house. Proposed about 1 year after 1st date and married about a year later.

ddhartma,
I lived in Marion for about 7 years. Was Quality Manager at the general Tire plastics plant. We made the compression molded Corvette body panel. Lived at 4311 S, Meridian Street.

Nobox, I have not really decided how to take it, either. There surely are some folks that are sold on it, though.

ASQSSGB? Want some soup to go with that alphabet?!??

My turn I guess...

1. Claes Gefvenberg... obviously :vfunny:

2. Quality Systems Mgr... Though some people seem to think I'm part of the IT dep. That could be caused by my extensive use of any computer related aids I can get my hands on...

3. Used to work with conveyor systems and construction equipment, currently in the stainless steel business.

4. AvestaPolarit.

5. Roughly 20 years... Done just about everything from inspector to the current job.

6. In spite of being stubborn as... determined, I mean, I'm very willing to try new tools and methods.

7. Constantly having to remind people about what they should need no reminders about: Meetings, deadlines, audits... I mean, they are grown-ups and they have calendars and things. I know, I've seen them... :frust:

8. Perform miracles... Because that's what it would take...

My update:

2) QA Engineer for a Medical Device manufacturer and still do some consulting on QMSs on a referal basis. I am also part owner in a basement finishing business that keeps me plenty busy.

3) Back in medical device and enjoying it. It is sad to say, but regulatory bound industries have a higher emphasis on Quality in my experience.

5) I'm still at it! I'll let you know when I have had my fill.

ISO Coordinator - Hired 14 months ago to assist in the certification process - have since been offered Quality Manager but declined for a number of reasons - GM makes all calls and not enough money to compensate for the grief.

3. Industry you're in or have been in
Powder metal for the last 20 years doing training, document control and inspection of parts both dimensionally and metallurgically. Before the birth of my 2 sons, I taught secondary English.

4. Company you work for and location
Small PM Company in Elk County PA (PM capital of the world), but sent resumes out yesterday so I'm hoping to update this in the near future. :o

5. Length of time in quality function
A long, frustrating 20 years!

6. Something personal that sets you apart
This is a difficult one: I too have a passion for talking, but used to be exceptionally shy - divorce changes a person significantly! I wish I could find a job (or rich husband) and more to sunny CA where both of my sons live. ;)

7. Your pet peeve in quality
As Hank said - Quality being the first to go in cutbacks - I liked by previous job of 19 years, but cuts had to me made - why not the QS9000 document controller and trainer - they aren't essential!
And I also agree with ACRONYMS - I actually have a "Favorites" for deciphering them.

8. If you could change the world of quality, what would you do?
Barb beat me to it here - Leave (it will never change) - at least in my lifetime and I don't do well with frustration!

7. Same as some others here-some in the company just don't get it. Like quality has nothing to do with business, it's only there to look good for customers and make up some letters when they complain, otherwise stay out of the way. Fortunately, the top guy preaches that quality=business.
8. Same as others have said, quit using the "quality" designation; it's all about good business practices.

Hello all,

I am back from my wilderness!!!! I was a member of the cove forum some 2 years back (Marc, ISOGUY and other knew me before). Due to excessive work load I was away from forums for a while and now back in action!!

Trust all the oldies in the forum are doing fine and a big hello to all the newbies (who joined after I left Cove forums) :bigwave:

Will try and read as many posts as possible and try to give my inputs regularly.

Take care all.

3. Automotive Supplier - Have worked with Gray Iron, machining, fiberglass, heat treat, molded rubber for vibration control, HVAC tubing fabrication, metal stamping, welding, assembly, molded rubber precision sealing, aluminum foundry and die cast.

6. I had no intention of going to college until 10 years after HS, which I barely survived, I enrolled in 1984. I completed my BS in Business Administration in 2000 - 16 years later - & graduated Summe Cum Laude.

7. I have many, but will list two. 1- Those that only do enough to get by. 2- Failure to contain when something goes wrong.

Lunch or dinner with a Cove friend can be fun. Lucinda and I have a continuing "date" of sorts whenever I'm in Houston (next scheduled visit is in Jan). Sometimes we can get together and sometimes not. I'm always looking for the opportunity to meet one of my online buds...I may even make it to the Cincinnatti area one of these days and meet up with liberal old Marc hisself.

Have to modify this: Fired last year just before X-mas at the tender age of 59 and the Quality Department abolished for failure to get ISO certified. I should have been able do it. See 6. and 7. above for the real reason. :bonk: The company is now part of a State and Local investigation connected with our Governor taking illegal "gifts" in exchange for no-bid contracts. Do a Google search under Governor Rowland and look for the name "Tomasso". They are connected. You gotta love it.
Now I haunt the Cove and make my living as a Office Manager in a Residential Roofing Company run by a very close relative. My son! ;) :smokin:

Small indeed Dave. :D . To make it smaller we are looking into the area around Wabash, probably south to re-locate to. Currently the commute is 135 miles daily. We have looked around a bit south of the Salamonie (sp) and also near the Mississinewa river toward Marion. Do you ever get up to the Honeywell Center for the entertainment they have there? Or to have dinner at Eugenia's?

(My wife looked around the Peru area as well, but did not care for it. :( Sorry Paula.)

OK Marc, I can take a hint.

Bigfoot and Paula,

Maybe we can make some plans to meet for coffee (or your beverage of choice). Since I'm working in Ft. Wayne it's sort of hard to get away that long for lunch; but after the Holidays I could make it for breakfast on a Saturday, or we are shut down from the 24th to Jan 5th and I would be available at anytime during the shutdown (except Christmas day, of course :D ).

Paula,

OK, there are times when my 51 years of brain cell deterioration causes examples of idiocy. Such as inviting someone that currently lives in Arkansas to breakfast in Indiana. If you're ever within range, let me know and maybe we CAN get together for lunch (the offer still holds, but I now recognize that it may not be anytime soon). :bonk:

Never knew it would pave up the way for 'Quality in a systematic processing environment',

Little did I realise then it endowed a '(Quality) policy for lean-manufacturing- enterprise, calling for continual innovation'.

So lets kindle a 'flame of quality' in the next fellow!
If like this we all be quality wise,
I sure will distribute all the 'Deming Prize'!
Till then, I endeavour to explore,

5. Length of Time in Quality: Overall quality has been part of my aircraft work in the defence force and we went thru TQM and then 3000 series and 9000 series (Mk 1) I then became a civilian and went thru the 9K2K trauma. so I suppose all up it would be 25 plus years.
6. I'm Australian and that usually sets me apart plus I have four daughters with the oldest two being 21 and 19 and the youngest two being 7 and 5. Now that keeps me on my toes.
7. Pet Peeve is Everyone thinking that if it is Quality it must be my problem instead of taking responibility for their own areas.
8. I would change the standard to get rid of the need to have other people tell me how to interpret what is required.

Greg,

Sorry to hear that the pay is different because of the title vs. what you are doing to earn it. If it were the same job expectations, then I would expect the same pay.

As for the title itself, if it's any consolation, I like Coordinator better than Manager anyway.

Hi Greg!

Great! you Greyed in quality in defence. Picking up the basics conciously or subconciously?
That's what I think. My first official encounter ( into the public quality council)was my lecture as as a substitute speaker for a professor from The Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, the top notch management Institute.
i reportedly did well there in the workshop. Was paid double the honorarium w/o asking, in addition to a great pat ( we have no regrets!, had exclaimed the organisers, ( for he not neing able to make it).

and my software. based on my army training. ( i held the rank of a captain then) I gave stress on competence, depth of training giving example of responsibilities and functions in RCL, and talking the relevance of man behid the machine. ( light machine gun).

What have been your basics?

For those who don't know me.....

I'm Hershal, full name Hershal C. Brewer.

I am an Accreditation Officer (read Auditor) with the International Accreditation Service (IAS)......answered two questions there....by trade a Metrologist, so I have a unique role at IAS....as the Staff Metrologist, Measurement Uncertainty advisor, and also auditing testing labs and inspection agencies.

I have tried a bit of everything....manufacturing, military, Pro Audio (worlds strangest industry!), Metrology (the most exacting, and the most fun).

As for what sets me apart.....not sure. My hobbies however include Star Trek (all 6 series and all 10 movies), travel, swimming, and a lot of other things I rarely have time to do it seems.

My pet peeve? It's not exactly Quality, but folks who get in the number one lane on the freeway and want to do 50! AAAAAARRRRRRRGGGGGG!!!!! Where are those Photon Torpedos when I need them?

I tend to be pretty informal, sofeel free to come up and say hi!

My background as a mechanic, machinist, inspector, and development engineer, (while truly believing in the philosophy of a QMS since my introduction to ISO in 1995), has blessed me with insights into the fundmentals of developing a useable and ultimately profitable Quality Management System.

7. Your pet peeve in quality

Those who will not allow the system to reach and educate all employees in the benefits to a functional QMS

8. If you could change the world of quality, what would you do?

I would let the employees know that it is their system, not management's, not ISO's, not AS's, not RAB's, not ASQ's. Those organizations and structures are only are there to help and guide. The real QMS will only work if the emplyees embrace it as beneficial to themselves first. :bighug:

6. Something personal that sets you apart - Can't say CASA volunteer - someone already took that. This questions is a bit vague and hard to answer - sets me apart from what? my coworkers, my colleagues, my community, society in general? I'll just throw a few things out there and hope that at least one of them is unique: I'm very liberal (unusual for my location and industry), three of my four animals are black, I work part time as a bartender, I don't own a SUV (also unusual for my location), I'm not a husker fan, I hate shopping and I love horror films.
7. Your pet peeve in quality
Top management not taking our QMS seriously
8. If you could change the world of quality, what would you do?
I don't feel qualified to answer this question. Sorry. Can I just second Govind's answer?

Yep, Nicole. Most of us here would rather concentrate on the nuts and bolts of Quality instead of fighting all the folks who think Quality is a drag on profits.

We're always looking for someone with the "magic bullet" to help us achieve that.

Maybe you'll be the one to have that insight to help us all accomplish the task of imbuing our entire organization with the culture.

Welcome to the Cove!:bigwave:

8. If you could change the world of Quality, what would you do?
Try and change peoples atittude and perception of what it all really means and where quality practitioners are coming from.

and some duties within process control/product developement.

Industries: Exposure to QA within the petroleum business
minor exposure to analytical labs, metalwork

Length of time: 5 years

Something special; Well I look at quality Assurance as a career change. most people here regard it as a pain in the but, an clerical job, or something you 'get' stuck with or fall into. So I am here really to learn how to be a quality professional and not so much just a chemist.

Quality pet peeve: excessive documentation/ forms. Some consider this to be the epitomy of what quality is.
Deming never said we should be drafting forms on how often the bathroom is checked! So how do you convey to others that quality isn't just about a million procedures and 900,000 forms???

Changeing the way that quality world works. Quality would be making your process work efficiently. flat. recent experiences with the new buzzwords of business; six sigma, JIT, validation are negative.

why do so many of these things turn out to be games or superficial??

I'm a performer. (Has anyone else figured out their personality using Enneagrams?) That's good for the job I'm in. The tasks I need to accomplish are inspected by external auditors. And they have to be correct to satisfy the auditor. I have to get the job done right so when the audit happens, we can put on the show.

7. Your pet peeve in quality
Lack of resources to get all the tasks completed in sublevels of companies. I've noticed this is the companies that I worked for in the past. Quality is usually put on the "it can wait list". Then, it's put as a demand to complete in a short period of time in order to pass an inspection. I haven't had that issue at the company I'm with now--they are wonderful and recognize the need for quality and regulatory compliance.

8. If you could change the world of quality, what would you do?
It can't change--I think people are just getting the hang of what it means--if it was changed, they'd be all confused.

Hi all,

I'm a Technical Program Manager at a major computer company.

I stumbled upon this forum whilst looking for info for a Sigma project which I am leading. The project has to do with understanding sources of, and controls over, variation of critical-to-quality / critical-to-function electrical parameters.

From my own experience, combined with some of the projects I've been driving, it appears to me that there is a tremendous body of knowledge and experience regarding sources of variation in mechanical parts / products, and, in bulk processes for making things such as chem and bio products. But to me, it seems that with a few notable exceptions (e.g. Motorola), the electrical side of things is a bit less settled, with a great deal of low hanging fruit, especially when it comes to design, implementation and production of large, complex systems. I've been around long enough to remember the days when electronics, especially analog, were considered the realm of "black arts." Time to market has typically been paramount, leading to, shall we say, a lack of patience for proper statistical rigor, or doing gage R&R studies on digital oscilloscopes (and the engineers who run them)! Well, bit by bit (pardon the pun) this is changing, with a long and hopefully fruitful road ahead.

I am looking forward to learning from the body of knowledge and experience here!

Best Regards,

Mark

:bigwave:golly - I hope you are wrong. I have a lot of respect for all the electrical engineers who design avionics. Electrical engineers are one of the primary bastions of Configuration Management in assuring forward and backward compatibility between versions of products. The guys in my shop who design electrical and electronic equipment, including embedded controllers, etc., are extremely conscientious about how each tiny thing fits and interacts within a "large complex system" called an aircraft.

I have to agree with Wes. My background is avionics and I can assure you that they have the most stringent controls. It is where I became aware of QC then TQM and finally QA long before many Public companies did (I was in the Navy then Airforce for 20 years). There is noone safer or morre stringent than the avionics industry. (IMO)

Welcome, quasi_black_belt! Obviously there are other 'electronics' folks here so you won't be alone.

I got into quality as a 'serious profession' at what was at that time named Cincinnati Electronics (at that time owned by Marconi Canada, originally AVCO if I remember correctly, as in the early days of TV - radio {broadcasting and manufacture of equipment} and 'other' electronics - and maker of a very small car at one time....). I was involved with military electronics, mainly aerospace 'black boxes', communication equipment, and related electronics. Reliability was my focus. I got into automotive while there as my boss and I were into ESS (environmental stress screening) of electronic hardware and Ford was introducing surface mount devices on their car radio circuit cards and were having a heck of a time. They had a guy at a seminar Jerry gave and the next thing you know we were spending a lot of time at the Rotunda design area. Maybe that's why I see commercial 'quality' as very soft and am so often frustrated by commercial companies... Closest thing I see is the FDA and medical device folks who visit here and there are a number of them.

I was reminiscing and pulled out some really old stuff - attached is some old 'art' circa 1987 when I was heavy into failure analysis. It's stuff I did and still have on my Mac using a program from that 'era' - SuperPaint! Converted to .gif by copying into a Fireworks canvas. Just odds and ends from about 15 years ago.

It's been about 20 years since I've been PIC, but I'm technically still a licensed pilot. I have first hand experience being in a box, nothing but white in the windows, and believing the instruments. Yes - You want reliable instruments.

Pretty pictures, Marc. Especially from way back in the dark ages! :lmao:
:topic: Yes - it was back in the days that people wrote their letters in Lotus 123 because that's the only software their computer had in many companies! Computers have come a long way! I feel so-o-o-o OLD! Before CE got my boss and me each a Mac and a shared laser printer, we did environmental design criteria test plans in WordStar. Where ever you wanted a graphic you had to put in guessed at space by putting in CRs for blank lines, do the printout, make a graphic to fit the space size, paste the graphic on the correct printout page and run to the copier. Darn - lamenting past times again...

Anyway, same from me - Welcome! Glad you stopped by to introduce yourselves and I'm sure you'll find or get the information you need!

BTW - I'm not into Chatting much myself, but there are a few folks that meet in the Chat Rooms most mornings about 8 to 9 am (GMT -4 hrs).

Hi Marc, thanks for the welcome. Those thumbnails brought back memories of when I was creating source control drawings, item specifications and test procedures at a Bellcore compliant shop I was at for a few years back in the 80s; I also used a Mac at the time.

All - clarifying comment - my statement regarding mechanical Vs. electrical was mostly based on, as picked up on by Marc, the commercial electronics world not military, avionics or Bellcore / Telcordia compliant telco. I have also worked in the past in those niches and agree there are better controls and better intergration of quality principles in them.

One thing which I find to be overall true, however, is that when I ready Quality Engineering or other journals, there are far fewer electirical examples which I can directly apply to my current work than there are mechanical, chemical and other bulk process ones. For what it's worth....

That's one of the reasons I am here - hoping to directly exchange knowledge vis a vis computer systems.

Thanks!

Mark

I presume by "fall into" you mean your job as a Quality Engineer brings all these duties and "drops them into your lap" to resolve for the company.

Many of us deal with customer complaints on a daily basis. Some are valid, some are not. Many customers complicate matters by the attitude they bring to the process of resolving a complaint. Our task as Quality practitioners is to resolve the complaints as smoothly as possible.

The first step is to assure the customer you acknowledge the complaint and will do everything you can in a logical, orderly manner to resolve the complaint. The key to a smooth resolution is to keep up a constant flow of communication with a customer so the customer NEVER feels you are ignoring the complaint.

With a smooth flow of communication, customers may find it easier to accept if you ultimately determine the customer, not your organization, was in error.

1. Name: Russell Goodwin
2. Job Title or explanation of what you do: Software Quality Engineer though currently doing software testing.
3. Industry you're in or have been in: High technology. I have done software and firmware testing as well as hardware and software support, and sales support. In a previous career I worked with youth, in outdoor recreation / education.
4. Company you work for and location: A transnational software development company, Vancouver, B.C., Canada.
5. Length of time in quality function: 8 years though not all at this company.
6. Something personal that sets you apart: Not your average geek, I bring a wide range of interpersonal, physical and mental skills to the table from my many diverse previous jobs.
7. Your pet peeve in quality: Lack of recognition of importance of quality in Software, companies “bandaiding” problems instead of fixing the root causes.
8. If you could change the world of quality, what would you do? Make it standard that QA Managers, QA Directors, or VP’s of QA actually know something about Quality. Can you imagine hiring a CFO that did not know about accounting? Why on earth would you hire a QA manager that did not have at least some basic training in Quality!?

do you find more emphasis on quality assurance in your country
OR
do you find less emphasis on quality assurance in your country?

Welcome to the cove. :D

I would say definitely more emphasis in our country - USA. So much that its a hinderance - especially because of the fact that there is little training of all the proper people but high expectations of everyone to know and implement quality. We make it very difficult on ourselves, mainly to justify salaried and unsalaried positions in very large and medium sized companies.
