A useful reference manual in the automotive arena is THE-7 released by AIAG last year.
It is project based (around APQP) and conveys the inputs , deliverables AND examples of the various tools that can be used.

I'll have to check that out, but I've always liked the SAE R&M Guidelines (for Manufacturing Machinery and Equipment) (M110.2) 2nd ed. How is it different from that?

It is Product and Process directed under the APQP umbrella.
