Process flow chart also should be used to identify where characteristics, principally special characteristics, are created, as well as identify potential sources of variation.

Actually in the company i serve, SC is not specified in flow chart, let alone potential sources of variation. Who have a sample to show what the flow look like (including SC and potential sources of variation)?
Thanks!

I suggest the following:-
You have to maintain (1) Process Flow Chart,(2)FMEA and (3) Control Plan.
Keep the process steps the same,in all the three documents, preferably coded/numbered.
SC will appear in Control Plan(also in FMEA) and sources of variation will appear in FMEA. Thus the linkages can be established with Process Flow.
When you first establish Process flow,it is not essential to include SC or sources of variation. You can include a kind or risk analysis(low or medium or high) for each step in in process flow.

The process flow,FMEA,and control plan are interlinked documents , we derive the FMEA and control plan from the PF which give the better result.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
PF No. Process Description Incoming source of Product Process
Variation Characteristics Charactic
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Incoming source of variation get into the failure mode in FMEA.
Product and process characterics get into Control Plan.
(I give the basic details , if necessary i give the elaborate details)

If you are looking for a sample flowchart of how to understand variation, please take a look at http://www.hanford.gov/safety/vpp/piflow.htm
