View Full Version : ISO 9001 compliance for Purchase and resale?

Question?
We're going for our TS cert, with ISO 9001 for the non OEM products.

We buy many products, repackage and re-sell them. We inventory them and sell them as a complimentary product to our manufactured lines.

How do I address ISO compliance for these bought parts?

What will I need to do? Do I need vendor certs on all parts? Certs to what spec? Will I have to audit these suppliers?

I know there is alot of detail in the full answer. Can someone get me started in the direction I need to go. We have few systems in place for these products, and I think we prefer to keep it that way, or will be forced to raise prices for something our customers have not asked for.

Thanks in advance!

ISO 9001:2000 addresses purchased product in section 7.4, the controls are not all that cumbersome.

What you have to do is "establish and implement the inspection or other activities necessary for ensuring that purchased product meets specified purchase requirements." That, and clear and correct communication of said purchase requirements to the supplier.

That's about it. It's a really general standard, and basically marks minimums. The real requirements are based on real world considerations that the company must figure out for themselves. These requirements for process performance are based on section 4, 7.1, and throughout the body of the standard.

The individual requirements of the product must be based on suitability for use and considerations such as these. It is interesting, however, that the product is complimentary to your manufactured product. I think, however, that the same controls will be necessary for these re-packaged products as if the customer were directly purchasing them.

So are you currently involved in TS-16949 or ISO 9001:2000? Are you familiar with these standards? If not, I recommend the following (patented) starting points:

Purchase ISO 9001:2000 (or just TS-16949, which contains the entire contents of ISO 9001:2000) from techstreet.com, global.ihs.com, ANSI, AIAG, etc.

Obtain a quote for registration services for your organization's management system to become internationally certified to ISO 9001:2000 or TS-16949.

Become familiar with ISO 9001:2000 or TS-16949. Look for information about minimum documentation requirements, minimum records requirements; information on the plan-do-check-act process approach; and enough overview to get your mind around these crazy little 14 pages and what the standard means to your customers and to your company. This information can be pursued at www.iso.ch, www.iaob.org, and of course The Elsmar Cove (http://elsmar.com).

These standards basically require the organization to pursue customer satisfaction through continual improvement of business processes.

Sorry to poorly rehash the basics of ISO 9000 if you already know them.

For in depth discussion of purchased product, let us re-evaluate the 9 "shalls" in ISO 9001:2000 (7.4) and verify that complimentary product falls under the controls of this standard, which I think it does.

Thanks, we are being certified to TS now (in the next few months),but we have been treating these products as an exclusion. Now we realize that we cannot and I'm just trying to have a sanity check on how I need to handle these repackaged components. Yes I'm familiar with the standards, but, the minimum effort has been the history here for these components, so change will be fun!

We have the same "thing". Buy, repackage, and sell. We are ISO 9001:2000. These products are covered under Purchasing and Verification of product - inspection to specified drawing requirements. The product comes in, is received, inspected, re-packaged, and then transferred to inventory. The suppliers are selected, evaluated, monitored, etc as required by ISO. That's it. This process passed the audit.

The TS requirement in cl 7.4 is that suppliers of product be certified to ISO 9001, with TS complaince. They either need to be certified, or have an active plan with progress to become certified. Deviation would require a waiver form your customer, with alternative approaches.
