Hello Covers
I need advise! I'm looking for an acceptable way to satisfy the 7.5.4 Customer property clause for identifying our production dies.
We have lots of roll forming dies, various flat dies and die fixtures. We produce these dies in house. Most of our dies are customer owned. There can be as many as 20 sets of top and bottom roll dies along with side mount dies, punching and cut-off dies, plus additional flat dies for any job. The customer has paid for these dies (1st set) on most jobs. We have built extra sets of dies for many jobs.
We assign all jobs a unique job number that we use internally for everything. The only constant now is that our unique job number is on each die. Can we be compliant with just a master list for dies and owners? Could it be that simple? I’m looking for suggestions and advise.
Thanks

Sure, why not. I would recommend some type of annual review. My system is set-up with a master log and a "condition" column. Once a year, I run through the list and visually inspect the tooling.

As long as you can trace it back to the customer,
I think that is fine - IMHO

7.5.4 simply states that you must provide for identification, verification, protection, and safeguarding of customer property. How you accomplish that is totally up to you. And as stated in an earlier reply, as long as you maintain traceability you are compliant. Just develop a matrix spreadsheet and cross reference your unique job # with an asset # and customer name.
GOT 106,000?

sure, why not? if the number is unique and traceable to the customer it should meet the requirements.

Just by way of an example....
We etch a unique number to all customer owned holder blocks, dies, fixtures, gages, machining centers, etc. This unique number is preceded with an "X". All company owned holder blocks, dies, fixtures, gages, machining centers, etc., are preceded with a "G". I'm not sure why those letters were chosen, but it works for us because of the simplicity.

The Tool Standards/Contract from our customers state we have to have customer identification on the tool. We first color coded the tools and matched colors to customers on the master list, but they (customers - mainly Ford) weren't satisfied so we went with id tags.

This is a specific requirement of TS
7.5.4.1 Customer-owned production tooling
Customer-owned tools, manufacturing, test, inspection tooling and equipment shall be permanently marked so that the ownership of each item is visible, and can be determined.
The bigger problem as I see it is that of maintenance and wear.
You have to declare all damage, does this include wear and tear?:bonk:
