Thought others might find this interesting.

The ex USS Oriskany was sunk off the coast of florida to create an artificial reef.

Some pretty impressive pics.

This ship is one of the essex class carriers that served with the US Pacific Fleet in the second world war and continued to serve through Vietnam and beyond.
More Essex Class Carriers were built than any other single class of carrier, and none were ever sunk ---- until now.

Thanks JRKH, the pictures were interesting. I think it was a good idea to use it as a artificial coral reef. Now if only we can make sure that once it has established the Coral Reef it wil be left alone to help the ecology of the ocean.

A fitting end for a warrior.

May you have fair winds and following seas. (An old sailor's parting benediction)

Another Essex-class carrier, the Hornet, has been preserved in Alameda, CA and serves as a museum: http://www.uss-hornet.org/

There are at least 2 others that I know of, USS Yorktown at Charlestown SC and and USS Intrepid in NYNY.

I gotta make to one one of these days.

One other is the USS Lexington now in Corpus Christi, Tex.

I've been aboard her when she was still active as a training carrier at Pensacola. The last active diesel carrier at the time.
