View Full Version : ISO 9001 at a Union - Union of workers of the Insurance Industry

I was asked to coach the implementation of a Quality Management System according to ISO 9001:2000 at a Union.
It’s a Union of workers of the insurance business.

As it’s somehow a new challenge, I wonder if somebody knows about a similar thing done anywhere – an ISO 9001 registered Union.

Interesting. I've done ISO in union shops, but not for a union.
But why not?

Union operations are processes with inputs and outputs just like any other business.

Yes, but will you get a "greivence" for writing a nonconformance? If it gets to the 3rd step, then it has to go to arbitration. :tg: Then what does that do to the ISO requirements.:notme:

This is a soft union. This is more like an “association”. It represents only office workers that work in several insurance companies.
Their workers are their customers, this the way this has to be seen.
As they are not able to perform any kind of strike (they have not enough power to do so), this Union just organizes some extra services for their workers. Such as Holliday camps, Training courses and so on.
Of course they also provide legal advices and help to their members if necessary.

I just remember some years ago during a registration audit at a large metallurgic plant, the audit was stopped by the Union. They said that I only could ask questions to the workers, after the union reads them first...
Them the factory administration had to deal with the union in order to continue the audit.

I think this is going to be easier than the ISO 9001 implementation I’m going to start at a soccer team...

That is an interesting comment/statement Ralphuser. I don't think there is any provision for grievances in ISO9001. Maybe before they "Officially" release ISO9001:2008 maybe they need to consider how this would be addressed.
