I don't think that a supplier audit is much dfferent from an internal audit. The scope of the audit may be narrowed down to specific area's of interest that directly affect the quality delivered to your company.

You could use any schedule that you currently use for internal audits, or take relevant parts from a registrar audit.

Items that can be considered are:
-management;
-document and records control;
-CAPA
-any relevant process for the products they deliver

Good luck!

Your question and statement do not provide enough information. Is this a new organization you are working for is just a new task for you? Check your companies records and see what has been done in the past.

Either way, what you will want to do is ensure your supplier has systems in place in order to provide uninterupted service of good product to you. What are the communication methods in place? Have they correctly identified your requirements? What is the result of previous years deliveries? (ppm good vs. bad; deliverability: ontime vs. late; etc...) How do they handle change management? Is there room for growth if your volume increases? How much reaction time is needed for change?

Do your research, there are many guidlines and tools out there. Check this site's search tool and if you want more check the web (www.dogpile.com.)

Best of luck,
E

Welcome-

Have you actually performed any audits in the past or participated in any audits?

I have been out of the Quality profession for quite some time (about 8 years as Manufacturing, Process and Design Engineer) and just recently returned (February, 06). Shortly thereafter, I was asked to perform a strategic supplier audit on a new Critical supplier. My advantage was that this supplier was already registered to ISO 9001 so I knew they had a system in place.

...my advice - If the Supplier is registered to a quality system (i.e. ISO 9001) then simplify your audit. Find one of the thorough and comprehensive audit checklists here on the Cove and taylor it to your company's needs based on what is important for your company in regards to the standard and the business relationship you have or desire with this supplier. Remember, you are not there as a registrar to verify their entire quality system - you just want to have first hand knowledge that certain critical systems that are in place will fit with your company's needs.

...this was my approach. IMHO (in my humble opinion) it worked just fine. I'm sure there are other folks in the Cove that may disagree with me, but that's why I label this as MY opinion. Good luck. You've taken a good first step in preparing for this audit - asking the folks in the Cove will provide you with some excellent advise. There are a lot of folks around here with many more years of experience than I.

Well, I hate to burst the bubble here, but you are the Rookie (First Audit). The first impression has already been established and might be relevant during the first Audit.

All you can do at this point is try and read a lot of books so that you might pass on the theoretical side, but fail on the practical experience.

For each there is a first. You could prepare for years, and still not feel you did well. Do your best, be polite and considerate and professional.

You will do fine.

But what Carol stated is true. We must all start somewhere, and this is your first baby step in the Audit world. Take is slow, prepare (by reading) or what ever makes you feel comfortable. The first is the hardest, but they do become easier as you progress.

You have taken the starting steps by your GB and 6 sigma.

Don't worry, be happy, and do it with a smile.:cool: Then most people won't know any different.:D

I would assume you have a supplier quality evaluation process in place that other auditors or SQE (supplier quality engineers) have trained ya up. I am hoping someone in your org (and I have seen this happen) just didn't pop up and say you need to visit supplier ABC because we are having issues with them, with no supplier quality audit system in place to support you...Have been there and seen that and have refused to do it!

As long as you feel you will be able to objectively assess your suppliers systems you should be ok. Follow the procedure your company has in place and see what happens. Good Luck.
