I am currently completing my Thesis for my masters degree and would like to get a good global response. The questionnaire is concentrating on determing the significance of Lean and Six Sigma outside manufacturing. In return I am willing to share the results for your future use. I would really appreciate anyone filling out the survey or passing to colleagues. I also need responses from organisations who do not use Six Sigma/Lean or alternative program. Thanks in advance.

I've provided you a response from this side of the pond...

Sure. From an American small manufacturer that neither uses 6s nor Lean.

Thanks both. This is great. Thank you so much for your help. The more responses I get, the more accurate my analysis.

I really appreciate it.

We don't use 6S or Lean officially...yet the approaches are unofficially there. Officially, though, they'll be incorporated in the near future so my answers are based from a site that doesn't use them.

This was a hot topic at a recent meeting of my counter-parts from our North American sites. If we had implemented the methodologies for our Business System properly, we wouldn't need to "implement" Lean. It would have been part of what we inherently do. If we had taken the approach to embrace these tools and methods and processes in a more effective manner instead of a "makes work" attitude, the concepts of waste elimination and efficiently would have been naturally encompassed by us.

The main reason for us now phasing the idea of "Lean' into our culture is because we didn't adhere to the old adage of "do it right the first time". Or rather, at my location, we did it right...but took the more scenic (and less effective) means to accomplish it.

Darn....Paul, can you include what I just said as part of my additional comments to the last question?

Will do. It is a valuable comment.

Thanks again RCBeyette.

RC,
I love it. "The Scenic means" (or route). I bet many can identify with that one. :lmao:

Paul,

I have just completed the survey. The questions are very interesting. Do share the results of your survey.

Hi Paul :bigwave:

Just added another response to your survey. I'll be interested in your "final product".

...and to RC - Yes, I've been down the Scenic Route; however I don't believe it's "the road less traveled". I think I see a traffic jam ahead...

Yeap. Btw, what is your target date for completing this survey ?

I will close the Survey down Monday am and then I have just one week to get the analysis done, so it will be available from the 18th.

Guys, I have been getting some great responses in my survey and I believe it is from the members on these boards.

I really appreciate the support. Keep them coming!

Yes, I do believe I see a flood of brake lights ahead of me. The worst part is that as a "change agent" and "champion of the management system", when these tools and methodologies were implemented we advocated how wonderful they would make our professional lives. They would help to improve the efficiencies of our manufacturing (and support) processes, while providing a means to look at the financial bottom line.

It wasn't always easy to teach and convince people to apply these tools.

Finally...we're doing it and more or less consistently to boot!

Now alongs the corporate initiative that we didn't implement effectively.

Geez, don't I feel silly! I did my job...like a good little solidier, did what was required of me, earned quite a few "locker room nicknames" I'm sure (not that I mind the last one...rather proud of that, to be truthful ;) ), and now we have to say we're going to use the tools and methodologies the way they were meant to be used.:mybad:

It reminds me of a philosophy professor I had in university. I was the only engineering student in the group of several hundred and sat near the front of the lecture room.

After spending 1/2 of the term teaching us what the 3 proofs were to demonstrate that something was "real", she announced "Everything that I have taught you up to now has been wrong. Now we're going to learn the real ways to prove that something exists."

:mg:  :frust: :nope: :truce: :bonk:

I spent several weeks learning these proofs, applying them to my assignments and mid-terms and now she tells me to forget all that I have learned?!?!

Needless to say, I failed the course.

I am concerned that the same outcome will result where I work when lean is "officially" implemented at my site.

Sorry, boys, but everything we've implemented over the past 10 years has been wrong...despite the fact that we're the golden child in the North American group.

I also need responses from organisations who do not use Six Sigma/Lean or alternative program.Hullo Paul. A bit late, but I just did the survey, so now you have one from a company that is just about to start up an alternative program.
