View Full Version : European Community Compliance and CE Marking - What do I need for Approval?

Hello again,
I'm getting to be quite a regular poster. And preferrably someday I will be able to provide some response to posts :)
Anyway Quick question.
I've done some searching on the net for consultants that would certify compliancy to the European Community. From what I've found, there doesn't seem to be an abundant supply of such firms? Perhaps I'm not looking in the right place, I've done the basic, Yahoo, google etc searches, and have also searched here in the Cove.
What I'm ultimately looking for is a consultant who will take my widget and tell me exactly what I need to do with it to get it approved for CE marking and distributable in the European Community.
I was assuming that there are consultants for this, just as there are consultants for everything else?
Perhaps somebody could offer links or references to places I have yet to find via search engines.

Thank you

CE certification is basically related to safety of your product for human use. You meet certain EN standards / directives where the standards dont exist and declare compliance. With this you are accepting liability for any harm a human being may come to while using your product.

Most of the products can be self certified exept a few listed catagories, use of which may result in permanent disability / death. For these, self certifications are attested by 'notified bodies'. All registrars of QMS like DNV, TUV, BVQI, Lloyds.. based in europe are notified bodies for this purpose.

The consultant's role in this case is very limited. He cannot 'certify' your product. He can find out and guide you regarding what requirements to meet, what documentation to generate in what format, back it up with what data,...

In case of self certification, you generate the dossier, keep it with you and declare compliance. Only, you assume the liability. If necessary, get it attested by a notified body.

You will get many consultants in the market. Choose one who specialises in your product range. Or, call in a notified body even if not necessary. They will come costly but tell you once what to do. Next time, you can do it on your own.

Two years ago, I was new to this issue (CE marking) and my first idea was asking an especialist to help me. In fact, what I could see is that I should learn as much as possible from the related standards (directive for pressure vassels, in my case) and apply them in the products we produce.
I couldnīt find anyone better than us (people in the company) to understand what is really necessary to do and to plan it properly.
At that time, a site that had a lot of information and where I could learn a lot about what was really need was http://ped.eurodyn.com, but I have just noticed that it is not working anymore. Maybe anyone who is working in a similar subject can help you?
Regards!

Thanks Potdar for your very informative response. Btw, how to determine which products can be self certified ? If you have the weblink, will you pl post it here; would be very much appreciated.

See the link posted above. To determine which products are self certified or not, it depends on its applied pressure x volume. There are some graphics (in the case of the directive of pressure vessels) where you locate your products and related modules.

You will find a bunch of dirctives listed here. Just pick one that applies to your product. You will find details of what needs notified body involvement and what doesn't.
