I don't know that there's a generally accepted definition. I think you'd have to define "standard" first. Is there a particular context where the phrase is used, such as the methods used to measure a particular product or feature?

This is what was in a procedure:
"Standard Measurement Methods (SMM):
Are the metrology capabilities and methods used by Milford Fabricating Company, Inc. to evaluate and control product and process characteristics. These evaluation and control activities are achieved using basic mechanical, monitoring and measuring devices, such as micrometers, calipers, scales, protractors, height stands, indicators, gage blocks, surface plates, templates and thread gages."
I was asked to clarify it and add a defination.:thanx:

OK. It looks like you already have a definition; "standard" devices are generic--they may be purchased as catalog items and are available to the general public, and are used for measurement in most manufacturing operations. As for clarification, you might want to contrast "standard" devices with "nonstandard" devices, which would be custom-made gages which are used to verify characteristics or attributes of specific parts or assemblies.

Does this help?

I agree with Jim; you have a definition already.:agree1: And so now you have to produce additional clarification? For which part? Jim made a good stab at one possibility, but there can be many others...what part and who's asking??? :2cents:
