Since you say you understand the idea of a bimodal distribution, I'm assuming that the "bimodal" you're referring to isn't in reference to the "mode" as a measure of central tendency but rather a process in which two distinct operating modes are present. The latter is, I think, just sloppy usage by people unaware of the statistical definition. I know that there are chemical processes, such as in the manufacture of polymers and thermoplastic resins that are sometimes referred to as bimodal because use of two reactors in the slurrying process. (I know this only because I was just reading a trade magazine article about it).

If you could give us the context in which the term is being used, we might be able to be more precise in our responses.
