View Full Version : New Word - Continualous: Improvement that keeps on coming

I have an idea to relieve all of the pedantic bickering over the meaninless distinctions between "continuous" and "continual" improvement. Such discussions only waste time because everyone knows, or should know, what the intent is.

I say we should coin a new word that eliminates the confusion: continualous, which would be defined referring to any recurring phenomenon, regardless of the rate of recurrence.

I think this lacks ambition.

Adding a bit of CAPA results in correpreventinualous improvement actions.

ISO/TC 176 has an FAQ on this.... :)

Why does ISO 9001 use 'continual' improvement vs 'continuous' improvement? (http://www.tc176.org/faq.asp?Question=6)

This issue was debated very strongly during the development of the 9000:2000 standards.

From a pure quality philosophy, we would encourage organizations to seek continuous improvement. However, it was recognized that not all organizations are able to demonstrate an incessant set of improvement actions, whereas they are able to demonstrate discrete improvement actions.

For this reason continual was used in preference to continuous improvment.

ISO/TC 176 should have a new FAQ on this....

This issue was deliberabated very strongiferously during the development of the 9000:2000 standards.

From a pure quality philosophy, we would perfuncterously encourage organizations to seek continualous improvement. However, it was recognized that not all organizations are able to demonstrate an incessant set of improvement actions, whereas they are able to demonstrate discrete improvement actions.

For this reason continual was used in preference to continuous improvment, though continualous is recognised as being a fantabulous alternative, although it does not carry the necessary gravitabulous currently required by phrases inclusiveliciously detailed within the Standard.

Reminds me of the episode of Blackadder where Robbie Coltrane played Dr Johnson. Comedy gold which I hope made it over the pond (I'm not sure if Blackadder was one of our successful exports or not)?
