How do I put my picture next to my name?

Marc

That picture is your 'Avatar'.

You go to your User CP (http://elsmar.com/Forums/usercp.php) (User Control Panel). There, on the left you will see a list of links, one of which will be Edit Your Avatar (http://elsmar.com/Forums/profile.php?do=editavatar).

There are about 140 avatar's pre-made to choose from. If you want to put a picture of yourself in, rather that one of the forum 'standard' avatar's, you have to have posted at least 10 posts. Since you have over 63 at this time this will not affect you.

Other limitations: The maximum size of your custom image (avatar is 75 by 75 pixels or 64.0 KB (whichever is smaller). Now and again, some people have trouble getting their picture to fit 75 by 75 pixels. If you do, just ask one of us and we can help.

Also see: Avatar Content Policy (http://elsmar.com/Forums/showthread.php?t=26428)

************************

You can also put a picture in your 'User Profile' (look at the list on the left for Edit Profile Picture (http://elsmar.com/Forums/profile.php?do=editprofilepic)). It can be a bigger picture than your avatar picture - 150 by 150 pixels or 64.0 KB (whichever is smaller).

Also see: Signatures, Avatars and Profile Pictures (http://elsmar.com/Forums/faq.php?faq=vb3_user_profile#faq_vb3_signatures_avatars).

Ok:

Click your User CP (top left corner). Then you will see Edit your Avatar under Settings & options to the left. Once there, you have to scroll down, tick the Use custom avatar option and upload your picture.

Aha... Marc beat me to it...:D

Microsoft Office 2003's Picture Manager software is very good for resizing images. If you do not have that, Microsoft Paint under the Image pulldown has 'Stretch / Skew' and that will let you gradually resize an image to get it to avatar size.

Hi,
Thanks so much for the info on the avatar uploads.:agree1:
I must have spent approx. 10-15 min. last night and about the same this morning trying to get my pic. to upload, resizing it moving to different places in the computer etc.
the light bulb went on and i thought to search to see if anyone else had had this problem and sure enough they did and i see my problem was i need to have at least 10 posts under my belt before i can get my avatar. since i just joined yesterday i don't have that many yet but i will. i thoroughly enjoy the information available and knowledge of the people who post here. :bigwave:
I couldn't find the information i needed anywhere and i came here and found it right off. So thanks to everyone too!!:thanks:
Stacy:yes:

I used to have 'open' settings here for most things like signatures for people as soon as they registered (and activated their registration). After some thought a while back I changed the settings so that for signatures, avatars and such require 10 posts to use. I can't remember what my reasoning was at the time.

I'm open to comments on whether the settings should be changed back to the old zero posts requirement for avatars, profile pictures and signatures.

I can't remember what my reasoning was at the time.

I think it has to do with our effort to curb new users from incorporating company names, sales pitch, links etc into both the avatar and signature.

Agreed. I think the 10 posts guideline should probably stay. The deal is... there are so many people trying to come here and advertise. If you enjoy yourself here and contribute to the threads, you'll be at 10 posts in no time.

The policy does create some inconvenience for our well-intentioned guests, but helps control those looking to advertise or be malicious.

Lilac Kitty... welcome to the Cove!:bigwave: We are sure sorry about the problems you had. Feel free at any time to contact Marc or any moderator for help. For that matter, great Covers like Ted and others will be more than happy to help, if you will post your question. That's what we're here for: helping!

thanks for everything!!:applause:

I lost my favorite Avatar. It was one of an gummy old man. Does anyone know if it'd be cached somewhere? In fact someone commented on it in one of my posts...

I'm not sure what you mean by having 'lost' your avatar. Can you explain further? It's not cached if you deleted it.

I don't know what he means by "lost" either, but there is a possibility that it's in his browser cache somewhere. You can look here (http://kb.mozillazine.org/Browser.cache.disk.parent_directory) for information on locating the cache in Firefox, and in Internet Explorer it's in C:\Documents and Settings\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files.

Marc

That may be possible, but the Elsmar server doesn't have it cached. Once someone here deletes their avatar, the software deletes the file from the server.

Yes--it wasn't clear what cache the OP was referring to.

thanks all.

I just noticed it was missing. I had upped it to my server, so I suspect I deleted it inadvertently(spl?)

I was hoping it may have been cached somewhere, guess not.

Thanks though.
