View Full Version : Playstation 3 - $$ Cost - Thoughts - Opinions - Evaluations?

Just curious what everyone here thinks of the rising costs for video gaming? This Friday, the new PS3 debuts in America. Who's rushing out to get one?

I'll probably get one but not for a few months - when the stores have them in abundance. (I waited 7 months before I bought the Xbox 360.) Actually, I'm not real happy with the costs but what can we do about it?

I don't need new gaming consols, my atari 1600 still works just fine. It's just a little hard to get games for it anymore. And belive it or not, my daughter love playing on it almost as much as I did. :tg:

I'm a Mario, Zelda, Metroid kind of guy. Have all the older Nintendo systems hooked up and ready to go. Best one is the Super Nintendo followed by the Gamecube as far as games and controls go.

Games and systems are still plentiful and reasonable on Ebay.

Why pay the high prices now when you'll be able to get them for pennies on the dollar a year down the road? Since the new Wii will be backwards compatable with the Gamecube, doesn't make much sense to upgrade right away. At least until the new Zelda is released:cool:

I really love my PSP. At this point in my life the handheld is perfect. I play it while lying on my bed waiting for son to go to sleep in his room. Plus I take to to the gym to listen to music or watch movies while on the cardio machines.

so, to answer your question... no.
I think the next console game I'll buy is whatever generation is out in 3 or 4 years when my son is ready for video game system more complex than V-Tech's kid stuff.

I am a Sony fan, though. So if I was single or had no kids I'd probalby get the PS3, but only after the holidays when they become easily available.

A few weeks ago many stores were allotted a relative few of the first units to be delivered. Some people who took advantage, who will ostensibly take delivery on 11-17, already have the units for sale on eBay, and bids are running in excess of $2000 in some cases. My son and a friend have decided that they're going to camp out at Best Buy (or somewhere) and try to buy one on the 17th and then sell it on eBay.

We have a store in town that sells used systems and used games.

I'm hoping to score a cheap PS2 once the PS3 hits stores and surprise my husband with one for Christmas. He'd love a gaming system, and this way I could still use the PC while he's playing his games.

I heard from someone (this could be totally untrue) that eBay was not going to let each eBay member sell more than 1 each. I have not verified this to be true, yet.

This could be interesting! I already purchased an HD DVD player because it's half the price of the Blu-ray player! The picture is absolutely amazing :applause: . I have heard that a new player will be coming out that WILL play both formats. I cannot recall who advertised it.

Edit 11/15/06: Oops. Got my info wrong. Actually, someone has created a the "reader" for dvd players that has the capability to read either format. So, in this case, I would imagine that sometime next year or after...maybe a player that can read/play both formats will be available.

I take another position against this kind of devices . Play station didn't keep my attention so much. A computer is a computer and we use it like a tool .
I think that if we want to play but realy to play, it is also to share with others persons. What i say is that a computer make you stay alone in front of a machine. Instead of having contact with people arround you . I probably not understand what is interesting in play station could said many people, but i don't found it very attractive. Playing with these cumputer or play station keep us in an artificial life . I think that the real life is more natural .
It is a point of view .
And i didn't anwer about the price !!! You know what , i have never bought one .

It is especially true if you build the PC yourself. I can spend less than $1200 and put together a really nice PC which would shame the high end Dells. Of course, there is Alienware which is way overpriced, but somehow they manage to sell their systems.

If you want to play the original games, just do a search on google for into emulators and mames and rom.

I have Titan.
Recently cataloged all the pieces and thought about selling it on eBay, but just couldn't do it.
Older Avalon Hill games are pretty collectable.
I still have in my possesion:
Dune
Civilization
Machiavelli
Titan
Elric
Starship Troopers
and about 6 more that I'm spacing right now. There is a hockey game similar to Blood Bowl that was a lot of fun.

My 17 and 14 'fight' over the next gaming system they want. The first we owned was a Sega Genisis (I think) - the little plumber jumping and hitting bricks - kind of like 'breakout' so I got it!

OK - just thinking back on game systems. The boys play numerous games through the internet AND have the graphics on our TV. They do not - at this time- think the new game station is 'worth it.'

Is Sony eating hundreds of dollars on each PS3?
By Michael Kanellos, CNET News.com
Published on ZDNet News: November 16, 2006, 11:18 AM PT

Consumers are getting a lot more than they bargained for with the PlayStation 3, according to analyst firm iSuppli.

The cost of manufacturing and materials for the low-end, 20GB version of the console comes to $805.85, iSuppli said in a report Thursday. That means that for every PS3 Sony sells for $499, it will lose $306.85 on components alone. Marketing and advertising costs would then boost the actual cost to Sony even higher.

The PS3 with the 60GB hard drive comes with a manufacturing and component bill of $840.35. Since it sells that version of $599, the component bill exceeds the retail price by $241.35, iSuppli said.

A Sony representative would not comment on the PS3's manfacturing costs.

The research firm's final estimates are in line with others from earlier in the year. In February, a scan of analysts' estimates put the manufacturing and material costs for the PS3 between $725 and $905.

Sounds like a good deal but then....

How to make money by giving stuff away Posted by Ed Burnette @ 7:39
(Blog in ZD)

Two news stories caught my eye today. First, it looks like RedHat is planning to split JBoss into free and enterprise offerings as it did with Fedora and RedHat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). The second item is that Sony may be losing over $300 on each PS3 that it sells. Sony hopes to make the money back on game and accessory sales, while economies of scale drive down the cost of the hardware over time.
These are just two examples of companies that are trying to make money by giving stuff away

Looks like the market out there is real competitive.

Well . . . I'm completely mystified by this whole electronic games phenomenon. I note one poster was mystified by folks playing games alone in front of a flickering screen - me too!

Of course, I never got hooked by the games that came preloaded free with the Windows software (Solitaire, etc.)

I still love to play poker LIVE with adults; Marathon Monopoly with grandkids; gin (the game AND/OR the drink) with my wife; War, Fish, crazy eights, Uno, etc. with kids to help them learn counting and other number skills.

One of the grandkids came to visit with some sort of hand held electronic game. I taught him Blackjack with some stacks of poker chips as markers. Greed for chips hooked him. He never went back to the electronic game during his visit and, in fact, forgot to pack it when he returned home. I had to mail it to him.

I am intrigued by the idea of HDTV. If only the shows on TV were worth watching using ANY technology, I would spring for the new set immediately instead of waiting for the deadline when ALL programming and transmission switches over (now apparently pushed back to Jan 2009.)

Re: resale of games for huge profit on ebay - THAT completely mystifies me, as does the previous idiot fads about Tickle Me Elmo (I did like the joke about the "two test tickles," though!), Bean bag and Cabbage patch dolls, etc.

Anybody know folks paying premiums today for games from three years ago? Ten years? Kind of shoots the whole "collectible theory" in the butt, doesn't it?

Scarcity? (Anybody hear of "supply and demand?) Want some fun? Read the tale of the "Holland Tulip bulb bubble." (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tulip_mania) Here's a brief synopsis
http://captaincapitalism.blogspot.com/2006/09/when-you-abandon-fundamental-value.html
For example, the famous Holland Tulip Bulb Bubble shows you what happens when you no longer value a tulip bulb for the fundamental value that it will bloom and look pretty, but rather value it based on the idea that you can sell it for more than what you paid for it because the person buying it from you doesn't care what they pay for it, because they know they can turn around and sell it to another person because they don't care what they pay for it because they know they can...etc, etc..

Or Beanie Babies. Paying $600 for something that is nothing more than cloth and beads. Doesn’t clean the house. Doesn’t pay a dividend. Just sits there. Once again, you have abandoned its fundamental value and paid $600 for (as far as I’ve been able to figure it) something to feed a middle-aged woman's midlife crisis.

With The PS 3.

There will be many line downs (Critical Stops) due to shortage of electrical components used in allocation.
Automobile, TVs, PS, Computers...

When these kind of devices appear it is important to increase the buffer of Capacitors, Chips,.. (Leat time =20 Weeks).

In these scenario Distribuitors starts stoking electrical devices to sell later 10 times more expensive than our P.O. when we are almost stoping to our OEM Customers.

Electrical builders, fear...

I have suffered these things.

I have an XBOX (Not 360) but rarely use it as I prefer the controls (Mouse and KB) on my PC. I only play the XBOX if the kids are over and we can play something together. I can build a PC system that will play some awesome new games and my 20" monitor is a great screen to play them on...although I must admit I hooked my 36" LCD TV up to the PC and it is FANTASTIC!!!!!

When will the time come when we will just hire/lease ALL of our tech equipment? The IT gear changes so quickly now that is it worth me having my Mobile Phone, PDA, Laptop, Games console, PC etc as fully owned items? Should I not be able to upgrade them regularly by just paying someone else to take the upgrade heat?

Should I not be able to upgrade them regularly by just paying someone else to take the upgrade heat?I hear ya! We've never paid up front for a mobile phone. Free with first contract, upgraded by the service provider every 3-4 years because we are "loyal customers". Basically, I'm paying as I go with the service contract. My PC is a different story. Buy a good base, complete. Add/upgrade memory, microprocessor, HD, CD/DVD, etc. until whole unit becomes unwieldy. Repeat. As for the game consoles, I've had the Atari 2600, Nintendo (NES), Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, PS1, and PS2. We actually purchased only the Nintendo64. The rest were hand-me-downs. We can wait until the price goes to 0.

Wow! I'd probably be 500 pounds but the idea of free lifetime tacos IS appealing. More so than the PS3. I'm thinking tacos are approximately $0.70 each...I eat two at time...I'm 32 years old now...

This would be an excellent "word problem" in math !!! I could get my money back in less than one year if I ate there every day. As much as I love Taco Bell, I'm not sure I could eat there every single day. Once a week would be great, though...

Good Morning all.

Just thought I'd put in my :2cents: ... I agree with Wes and Icy in the old fashioned, non-electronic method of gaming - I guess I'm rather old fashioned too. However, having said that...

:truce: I finally succumbed to peer pressure and decided to purchase a gaming system for our daughters this Xmas. We decided to go with a Gamecube. Seemed to be more in line with the 11 yr old age group. I don't remember seeing anyone mention this one as the discussion was going. I'll let you know after the new year how it stacks up.

BTW - just to let you know how old fashioned I REALLY am, one of these days in the next few years, I may even buy a cell phone!

Gamecube is a great little machine but is one of the "previous generation" of consoles. The Wii is the Nintendo "Next gen" console.

Super Monkey Ball on the game cube was superb though. You should also be able to pick up plenty of cheap second hand games on ebay for it.

Nintendo is IMO the console of choice for the age group you said, but it is also a great choice for older gamers as well.

Thanks for the vote of confidence Chergh! ...and thanks for the lead on the Super Monkey Ball. I needed to buy a couple games and, not being a "gamer" myself was rather overwhelmed at the number of choices. I'll have to look for that one.:agree1: (That's probably another reason I shyed away from PS2, too many choices - I'm easily confused! )

BTW - I was going to give you an "official" thank you, but I see the "thanks" button disappeared. If Marc stops by - Where'd it go?? Consider this a "non-official" thanks Chergh!:thanx:

An interesting story appears this morning in my local paper. Apparently the bottom is falling out of the PS3 market:
On November 20, shortly after the new PLayStation landed on--and quickly flew off of--store shelves in the United States, [a local man] advertised a 60-gigabyte "premium edition" with wireless controller and resistance game for "$3500, firm."

Five days later, [the asking price] dropped to $2500. It was "$1200 or best offer" by Dec. 5, and $1000 four days after that. This week [the man] said he'd happily take $800 apiece for the two units he still hopes to sell.
The article goes on to note that the "precipitous" drop coincided with the release of Nintendo's Wii system.

Steve,

I'm not Marc, but...

Thanks is not enabled in the "Coffee Break" forum, but is reserved for the "serious" areas pertaining to quality, business, etc.

Thanking someone in a thread like you did here is perfectly OK, of course.

Oh, I certainly agree it would be, but there are some things that Dr. Deming, six sigma, and the like just can't help.

Oh, and GOOD LUCK!!!

As you are buying for daughters rather than sons the following games may appeal more to them:

Animal Crossing (http://uk.gamespot.com/gamecube/rpg/animalcrossing/review.html)

Paper Mario 2: The Thousand-Year Door (http://uk.cube.gamespy.com/gamecube/paper-mario-gcn/555181p1.html)

A bit sexist of me assuming this but these are great games for an eleven year old IMO.Super monkey ball (http://uk.gamespot.com/gamecube/action/supermonkeyball/review.html) is still a great choice as well

I bought a used PS2 yesterday from a lady at work for $50 and two games were included. I wrapped it, under cover of darkness, with the official Santa wrapping paper and stashed it with the hidden gifts.

I can't wait to see the puzzled look on my husband's face when he is giving out gifts Christmas morning and finds the one without a tag...priceless. I can't surprise him too often but I have a shot at it this time.

I'm giving a PS2 this year to my son, who I am gratified to say is happy enough to get that (he's been borrowing his older sister's PS2) though he of course would prefer the greatest and grandest. Our buying power for such things is limited and the deal is, those who are on the Honor Roll get to play PS2. :whip:

However tight money is, though, I'll buy a game for one of my young someones who get High Honors.

How to enforce the Honor Role rule? It's not all that hard. There are tools available like this one (http://www.safetycompany.com/esafe%C2%AE-electrical-plug-lockout/p_1355.html).

I bought a Playstation 2 a few years back. Good investment. The kids have loved it! Too, I can purchase Playstation 1 games on it (way less expensive). I love Simpson's Road Rage. It's one of the few games I can push the buttons right in a short enough time-frame.

We bought a Gameboy, but it's hard to see the screen.

'Different Strokes for Different Folks'. I just cannot bring myself to pay substantial extra money just to be the first to get something.

Seems like the perfect way to tell your kids you think they can't be trusted. I have learned through intelligence measures that my son is sometimes inclined to do one thing and say another. I have no problem at all in describing just how the rule will be enforced beforehand. Thus, his mind can turn away from ways to get around the thing and toward ways to make sure he gets his school work turned in.

Well, I don't know. I am an expert at raising other people's children, you know. :biglaugh: That's not always a bad thing. When working in the school I learned how little some people know their own kids. The little darlings have that face they keep in the jar by the door, and put it on when they get home. When away from their parents they can be very different people. My kids are no exception :notangel:

Actually, my kids are usually better when away from home, but that's sure better than the other way!:lmao: I often have to ask people, "Are you sure you are talking about my children?"

There are several things I refuse to trust just on blind faith, someone else's dog, a strange or unbroken horse, and teenagers. All three have way too hot blooded to turn your back on without checking up on them periodically.:notme:

Sorry, Crusader. I was not able to select your link; it was blocked.

I guess it's like going to a car lot. I don't go to a car lot, because then I see new shiny ones. I get in my old one, and suddenly it's older, dirtier, more run-down than I had remembered. Well, better trade it in!! :agree1:

I guess I am afraid to find out too much about the PS3. I might like it!!

Several friends that the graphics and all is better on the X-box, and the game selection is better on PS2. Do you think the same is true on PS3?

I've seen some kids at Walmart/Target throwing bloody tantrums that I promise you I could be an expert with. I could nip that in the bud.

:agree1: I get so many compliments on my kids. Don't know about horses, and my dogs are harmless but 'scary' to anyone new to them.

Yep - check up on those teens. I've called lots of other parents saying 'OK - just making sure you are there as sworn by my son'...'no problem' ...'if they ever say they are at my house, feel free to check'...'OK....I'm glad you called...' Us parents have to stick together.

About playstation - they ARE usually at my house playing PS2. The friends bring games including this one with bongo drums?. Listening to teen boys hanging out in the basement laughing - any day! Rather have them here than wondering where mine are!:topic:

I know I yanked this thread off track before, but just thought I'd jump back in and quickly thank Chergh for the "Super Monkey Ball" suggestion! I bought the Game Cube for our girls for Xmas, and they haven't stopped playing it since (with appropriate parental intervention of course - and I had to watch the college football games yesterday! ... Boy Oh Boise!!!!).

Thanks Chergh!!:agree1: Great Game:thanx: (if the truth be told, we all enjoy it!)...

Hey, no problem. I think the direction this thread has gone and goes is just fine. Feedback is great. Sorry that some people could not get to the link I recommended for PS3 vs. Xbob360 comparison. It's not protected - it is a public viewable link on www.gamespot.com - who has excellent reviews for all gaming platforms.

I think the prices of the systems and games are too high for my budget. Hence I have 2 modded xboxes for the price of one 360 where I can copy and delete the games to the hard drive at my leisure. When a hacked version comes out in about 2 years I will probably buy that one.:magic:

I'm still debating replacing my original (dead) Xbox. Tried two GameStops over the holidays, one had nothing, the other had 1 for $109! I only paid $150 brand new a few years ago!

And then he tried like **** to get me to go w/ a new 360.........

I have just treated myself to a PS3. I got a great deal from Virgin Megastores:

Base unit is usually £424.99 (60Gb with all the extras and one controller)

I got that but with x3 free games and an additional controller. All for £424.99.

What do I think of it? It is freaking amazing! I love it!!!!!!!

It is a real multimedia mega machine. Where do I start?:

Blu Ray Capability
Powerful, amazing gaming (the graphics are out of this world)
Free to join online Network and most games are free to play online, the only charges being applied to additional extras, like new maps etc....
Wireless Internet connection that is easy to setup and is a reliable as your grannies birthday cards!
Wireless, six axis controllers that are an absolute god send! No more sitting on the floor playing your games (plus coiling up the wires for storage which eventually turn into a tangled mess!!)
Great launch games including the unforgivably additive Motorstorm and Resistance.
Backward compatibility with PS2 games and PS2 memory cards (reader required). Meaning I can complete all the PS2 titles still not finished on my shelf!
Multiple memory card readers.
60Gb hard drive for movie, photo and music storage.
Downloadable games straight to the hard drive.
Sexxxxxy black shiny case with horizontal or vertical orientation. (it looks nice! None of this silver or pink slimline rubbish) This is pure black, shiny muscle.
No ring of death to worry about!
Loads more I probably haven't even touched on yet.

As you can see I love my new PS3, and I think it was worth every penny. Can't wait for more releases to come out for it.

Thanks, that was one of the games that I could have gotten with it when I bought it but I passed on it. I don't normally go for fighting games, but I might check out the demo now. I am one for strategy, shoot em ups, racing adventure and football (soccer) games.

That's another great thing about the PS3, getting to download the demos off of the PS Network. No more having to buy magazines with cover discs!

Oh forgot to mention I got the following games:

Resistance - Fall of Man
F1
Motorstorm

All pretty good games and the online gaming is pretty good too! just not enough time in the day to sit down and have a good gaming session!
