You must specify what you mean by business organization.
Of course in some type of organizations you haven’t so many environment risks to manage, than what you have at a heavy industrial plant.
But in general ISO 14001 can be applied to any kind of organization.

Any organization may, but it is more likely used by organizations that:

- have customers who require it
- are in a type of business where environmental compliance is a key issue for the local community
- top management believes in the use of (international) standards for business management
- there are economic advantages
etc.

It would actually depend on the Environmental Regulatory Agency governing the particular area the business resides in. Secondly, if the business corporate practices require 14001 certification as well even if it's not needed.

THe best course of action after determining the Environmental regulations, corporate requirement and of course the best determining factor:

Is the company a large producer/user of hazardous materials? If so, then 14001 may be a good option to pursue.

very much tks to António Vieira,Duke Okes and gard2372 for your answers.

and to Sidney Vianna...

do u know what is brainstorming?
in fact i have some answers..
The standards apply to all types and sizes of organisations and are designed to encompass diverse geographical, cultural and socail conditions. The 5 diff business organizations can be a govnermental agency, including all operations within that agency, a specific manufacturing operation within a facilty, such as a plating line, a business unit within a corporation, which could consist of business components, a medium-sized business an entire company including headquarters etc.
i juz want to raise out that in this kind of questions there is no perfect answer. so i'm using it as a reference. so anyway, tks for the insulting.

Sidney is very well aware of what brainstorming is. In fact as an auditor for a major Registrar, I believe he would have answered your question if you had been a tad more forthcoming in the basis for the question.

When a Cove member has been here for a while, we do tend to read questions - such as what you posted - to be more of an exam question and we really do wish that people would be more forthcoming as to why they are asking it.

I mean, seriously...which 5?!?! Why limit yourself to 5? Why limit yourself at all? Why isn't the question simply "Who can apply ISO 14001?" Of course, at that point, those of us familiar with ISO 14001 would have quoted:

It is intended to apply to all types and sizes of organization and to accommodate diverse geographical, cultural and social conditions...The level of detail and complexity of the environmental management system, the extent of documentation and the resources devoted to it depend on a number of factors, such as the scope of the system, the size of an organization and the nature of its activities, products and services. This may be the case in particular for small and medium-sized enterprises.

The answer to your question is "any company"...the number 5 is meaningless.

Now now Jiaqi, don't be too sensitive. I think his suspicions were raised because of the way you asked the question. I must admit, I was wondering why you specifically asked for 5 types of organisation.

In my experience any type of organisation can implement an EMS and seek certification. For example I have just started a project to help a training company to get ISO 14001.

On the other hand, they would not be at the top of my list if I were prioritising types of organisation to use an EMS. I would start with the 'dirty' industries first - those with the greatest impact on the environment - but then, that would be more difficult for them so they often don't bother until legislation or customers force them into it.

i've to admit that i'm new to this forum.

the thing is i want a more in depth answer. If i were to post my question "who can apply for ISO14001?", most answers i will probably get is "any company can apply for it". i know there are many organisations, company, corporations can apply for it and by limiting down to five is juz a value. any way, my value 5 is redundant too, cos the answers i get does not state which 5 organisations. but tks to those who take the initiative to at least state a few and explain it.

Please don't take anything that is posted here personally. What most people prefer is a specific question, so that the appropriate response can be provided.

I agree with what RC stated, the number has no value. What the question could have been:

"What are the most likely companies/organizations that would seek ISO14001 compliance and/or Registration?"

That would be a little more specific than applying a specific number, in my opinion.

Since, the standards are written to apply to all business types, placing a number really doesn't matter.

We can appreciate the newness factor, so, before I completely forget...welcome. :bigwave:

If you know that anyone can apply for ISO 14001, again, why limit it to five? Again, the question holds no value. Why were you interested in limiting it to 5? Besides, if any organization can technically implement an environmental management system, you would never reach a concensus on just 5. Cove members don't understand the purpose behind the question and combined with the fact that you know anyone can apply it, we become...frustrated...with a thread of this nature.

any way, my value 5 is redundant too, cos the answers i get does not state which 5 organisations. but tks to those who take the initiative to at least state a few and explain it.

Cove members, truly wish to help, jiaqi. Do not let our gruffness upset you. Often we will hide our frustration behind tongue-in-cheek humour. I admit that I did giggle at Sidney's response and, quite honestly, I agree with his post. Sometimes I really do wish we had a forum with such a focus. ;)

Re-reading your question, I find myself focusing on your use of the word "should". Who should apply for ISO 14001? How is this...any organization that wants to:

seek registration due to Stakeholder interest/requirements
assure conformance with its environmental policy
demonstrate conformance to requirements
implement, maintain and improve an EMS with third-party assessment

Of course, ISO 14001:2004 allows you to self-declare, I believe. So if all your organization wishes to do is say "We conform to the requirements", you don't need to be registered to ISO 14001.
