In a conversation with a coworker who runs our cmm machine a question came up that I didn't have an answer to. Is the ablility to run a cmm machine part of a job title or is it a field in itself? Pretty much a full time job here.

Yes. It depends on the company and the job.

Yes. It depends on the company and the job.
I have worked in companies that have functioned both ways.
Small companies the QM, or QE also runs the CMM such as approx 10 to 100 people.
Large companies was a separate function with trained people run the CMM full time. I worked at one place where there were a total of 6, 2 on each shift.
Typically part of the Quality department

The question came up during a *what would you do if you left the company* type of conversation. This person is part of the QA team with most of her job being layout on the cmm.
