View Full Version : Toyota (Critical?) Characteristic Symbols

If there is anyone familiar with Toyota's Characteristic symbols they use on thier prints I have a question.

After looking through alot of our prints for parts that we are going to start making for them soon, I noticed alot of dimensions have a Inverted Delta with the Capital Letter A inside them.

Ive scoured the Copy of the SQAM from Toyota, and I was unable to find this symbol mentiond anywhere on there. I did find the Inverted Delta, but only with the following Letters inside.

R = Regulation
S = Safety
E = Emissions

Is anyone Familiar with what this "A" symbol may be?

Is anyone Familiar with what this "A" symbol may be?I've always found it easiest to just pick up the phone and ask the buyer/purchasing agent who sent the drawings. There is little delay and you are certain to get exactly the correct answer. It is NOT your fault the symbol is obscure. Good drawing practice iis usually to include a list of symbols in the notes on the drawing itself or to give a reference sheet for company-specific drawing symbols.

Well, yes - but it would be nice is someone here knows and could tell us here what the "A" symbol is. That way a lot of us would know. I'm interested if anyone knows.

:topic: This is no aspersion against RMEDRANO - I have seen literallythousands of enginering drawings - it is poor practice to use ANY symbol not covered in a standard GD&T text without making the notation on the drawing itself or on a separate spec sheet attached to the drawing. My experience is the good drawing practice has fallen into disuse as more and more companies use CAD systems with the company-specific drawing symbols included. This is as sloppy as the lazy guys who leave every dimension in the default CAD three decimal mode, introducing unnecessary tolerance requirements that are not caught in the "check & approve" system to release the drawing for use. The supplier is then at the mercy of a CAD draftsman who has no clue as to what the real, necessary tolerance is for the product to function well.

Yes - I've explained this to clients for years. Automotive Examples of Company Specific Engineering Drawing Symbols (http://elsmar.com/Imp/sld046.htm)

Did they switch over from D ( Documentation required ) to A ( Archiving required ) just like the VDA did some time ago (See VDA 1 requirements) ?

Best regards,
Antoine

The trip got delayed a bit, so no answers yet. Although I did ask a former collegue who works as a Tier 1 Toyota supplier (we are a tier 2) and he said that its a "Critical Apperance" symbol. I asked for some clarification as I cannot find this called out in the copy of the Toyota SQAM that we have here.

Ill keep you updated.
