Hi,
I've been tasked with implementing a competency-based training process for a manufacturing site with 400 employees. Each department is currently managing it's own training and that isn't working. I want to bring them all under one system, with clear modules, matrices, refreshers etc. Trouble is, I don't know where to start! How do I go about getting existing employees onto the tnew system. For example there is no point in asking an engineer with 25 years experience to complete a training module, as he'll be the one training everyone else. Has anyone else managed a project like this, or are you aware of a good resource for tools?
Thanks:confused:

There is an extremely good example of what you're looking for in Table 3 of ISO 19011:2002. The table is specifically about internal auditor competency, but it can be applied to any job in an organization with some work.

Have you got a listing of the 'modules' you want to train? There are a lot of differnt areas which can be trained from fork truck driving to aspects such as training on specific internal systems (e.g. your nonconformance and corrective action system).
Or are you just looking at combining all the existing training into one with a single <job title here> responsible?
What about OJT (on the job) training?

How so? Not that I don't applaud a training system applicable to everyone. Does everyone agree that it's not working?

Each Department should list all positions and all of the knowledge requirements within the Department. Then they can say which position needs to know what.
When you get all of the Department matrices, you may notice some modules that overlap and would be better served at a company core level as opposed to a department level (e.g., general company information, general safety information, etc.)

Why can't the person with years of experience do a quiz or provide some other means of demonstrating his competency? After all, I've had my driver's license for 16 years, but that's no guarantee that I'm a good driver.
If you do the quiz, determine what the passing grade is and if he scores lower, than the he has to do the module. If he passes, put the date in along with a comment about being grandfathered in due to the good score.
