View Full Version : RC14001 in Transportation (the trucking industry)

I am working to implement RC 14001 in the trucking industry. I guess the good news here is that we are one of the most regulated industries around. Between DOT, OSHA, TSA Security requirements etc - most of it is covered. I am struggling a little on the environments aspects/impacts section.

I am assuming I should look at the maintenance shops to start...
Used oil
emisssions
amount of fuel
as far as office, the obvious paper, energy usage etc.

Also, if the carrier is a "Smartway" Partner - which is all about reducing fuel - does that quality as an environmental program??

I supposed you had looked into accidents (both major and minor) while in transit or on the road. If you carry hazardous cargoes,
minor accident - leakage of tanks or valves or minor spillage of goods
major accident - major spillage of goods (bulk or liquid)

Regards.

OK, I'm lost so help me out here. Why are you doing RC in the trucking industry? Is it a customer thing?

Yes - the company is a partner company of the ACC - (American Chemical Council) - in order to remain a partner company they have to be registered to either RCMS or RC14001 - might as well do RC14001 and get the ISO 14001 certificate along with it - more marketable anyway.

Yes - Accidents - certainly covered in that area - spill reporting, accident reporting, reviews...

training - more training done in this company than I have ever seen in the trucking industry -

Subscription services like ATA, JJ Keller etc used to evaluate and stay current on regulations--

I am currently looking for a RC 14001 class to attend if anyone has any suggestions.....I am in Ohio.....

C, good for you guys!!! Talk to all your folks, and have them describe how what they do might impact air, water, or land resources. The big ones we see our transportation contractors involved in are spills, waste management (batteries, tires, and also recycling opportunities for paper, plastic and used oil and solvents), and air quality due to not observing speed limits (dust management).

Thanks for the suggestions - I have been reading and re-reading the standard - as far as the environmental programs that are required - these guys are "Smartway" Partners - this is a partnership with the EPA designed to fuel efficiency and reduce greenhouse gases and air pollution - it is something they were already doing before the RC Requirement - I am sure this would satisfy the environmental program requirement ...right?

We don't have a RC course, but if you hum a few bars we'll join in. Now if you need a Registrar that's a different ball game.

Seriously I think Sid's folks might have one as well as some of the other compitition. Go to www.rabqsa.com and look under the Training Provider link. You'll have to look for the 14K Lead providers and go to their website and check from there.
