ISO 9001 is the requirements standard
ISO 9004 is a guidance document how to implement ISO 9001 in a company.

This topic has been discussed here for several times.
Please do a search in this forum ( maybe you better start at the bottom of this page here ) and if you have more specific questions, I am sure you are welcome here.

Hope this helps,

Best regards,

Antoine

ok but 9004 does state "is not intended ... as a guide to the implmentation of iso 9001."

Here it is... in the Endorsement notice:
....ISO 9001 and ISO 9004 now form a consistent pair of standards on quality management. ISO 9001 aims to give quality assurance of product and to enhance customer satisfaction, while ISO 9004 uses a broader perspective of quality management to give guidance for performance improvement. Still, I agree with Antoine that ISO 9004 is a great help when implementing a system, because it sheds some light on the reasons for the clauses in ISO 9001. Personally, I use it all the time.

can anyone highlight the main differnces betwen iso 9001:2000 and iso 9004:2000?From ISO 9000:2000 Selection and use (http://www.iso.org/iso/en/iso9000-14000/understand/selection_use/selection_use.html):

ISO 9001:2000 specifies requirements for a quality management system for any organization that needs to demonstrate its ability to consistently provide product that meets customer and applicable regulatory requirements and aims to enhance customer satisfaction. ISO 9001:2000 has been organized in a user-friendly format with terms that are easily recognized by all business sectors. The standard is used for certification/registration and contractual purposes by organizations seeking recognition of their quality management system.
The greatest value is obtained when you use the entire family of standards in an integrated manner. It is suggested that, beginning with ISO 9000:2000, you adopt ISO 9001:2000 to achieve a first level of performance. The practices described in ISO 9004:2000 may then be implemented to make your quality management system increasingly effective in achieving your own business goals. ISO 9001:2000 and ISO 9004:2000 have been formatted as a consistent pair of standards to facilitate their use. Using the standards in this way will also enable you to relate them to other management systems (e.g. environmental), many sector specific requirements (such as ISO/TS/16949 in the automotive industry) and will assist in gaining recognition through national award programmes.

The 2009 version of ISO 9004 will be a big departure from the 2000 document and it will no longer be a "companion", "consistent pair" with ISO 9001.

This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition, ISO 9004:2000, which has been technically, and substantially, revised. It now addresses the sustainability of an organization, rather than its previous focus on
performance improvements.

Yes, I just read the Committee Draft. Huge departure from previous - but a very positive one IMO.
